Exploring Quest And Cultural Humility In Relation To The Spiritual Identities Of Doctoral Clinical Psychology Students At A Christian University, Andrew L. Summerer Sep 2017

Exploring Quest And Cultural Humility In Relation To The Spiritual Identities Of Doctoral Clinical Psychology Students At A Christian University, Andrew L. Summerer

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Graduate students receiving doctoral training in clinical psychology from Christian universities often undergo unique changes in their faith identity. Previous research has demonstrated a decline in faith commitment, religious attributions, religious coping, and religious activities during doctoral training (Edwards, 2006; Fisk et al., 2013). While periods of religious disengagement among clinical psychology graduate students seem to be consistent across research studies, some research suggests positive religious transformation as students progress through clinical training and into their professional careers (Hofer, 2004; Pearce, 1996). Cultural humility is an other-oriented stance that is characterized by lifelong learning, cultural self-awareness and reflection, and interpersonal …

Alaka'i Haumana: A Grounded Theory Study To Create A Student Leadership Development Model For A Hawaiian Secondary Private Christian School, Derrik Graham

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative grounded theory study was to create a student leadership development model specific to secondary students in a private Christian Hawaiian school system. The paradigm that guided this study was Kouzes and Posner’s (2012) transformational leadership theory as it provides a framework of leaders equipping, encouraging, assisting, and serving others in order to empower them to lead others in the same way. The primary research question was, what are the elements necessary for a student leadership development model in a private Christian Hawaiian school system? Participants for this study were purposefully selected to represent individuals who …

Gender Differences In The Leadership Styles Of Mpa Directors, Meghna Sabharwal, Helisse Levine, Maria J. D’Agostino Sep 2017

Gender Differences In The Leadership Styles Of Mpa Directors, Meghna Sabharwal, Helisse Levine, Maria J. D’Agostino

Publications and Research

A growing body of literature has documented leadership styles by gender. This study examines if directors of Master of Public Administration (MPA) programs accredited by the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration exhibit gender differences in leadership styles. Such differences may affect the implementation of public administration and how effective MPA directors are in achieving positive outcomes. Using a mixed methods approach—specifically, exploratory sequential design utilizing qualitative data and analysis, followed by a quantitative survey—we find that there are some gendered differences among public administration directors. In particular, we find that women directors are significantly more likely …

Health Literacy: Cancer Prevention Strategies For Early Adults., Robert Simmons, Susan C. Cosgrove, Martha C. Romney, James D. Plumb, Rickie O. Brawer, Evelyn T. Gonzalez, Linda G. Fleisher, Bradley S Moore

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Health literacy, the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand health information and services needed to make health decisions, is an essential element for early adults (aged 18-44 years) to make informed decisions about cancer. Low health literacy is one of the social determinants of health associated with cancer-related disparities. Over the past several years, a nonprofit organization, a university, and a cancer center in a major urban environment have developed and implemented health literacy programs within healthcare systems and in the community. Health system personnel received extensive health literacy training to reduce medical jargon …

Leading Empowered Evaluations To Develop Trust And Improve Learning: Insights From Qualitative Research, Peter Mcclenaghan, Kerrie Ikin Aug 2017

Leading Empowered Evaluations To Develop Trust And Improve Learning: Insights From Qualitative Research, Peter Mcclenaghan, Kerrie Ikin

2009 - 2019 ACER Research Conferences

What does ‘empowering teachers-as-evaluators’ mean in whole-school strategic planning and evaluation? Our work seeks to develop and empower teachers as whole-of-school evaluators to embrace ownership of the school’s plan and directions, build communities of practice, create transparency, openness and trust, and ultimately improve student learning outcomes. Our previous research in whole-school qualitative empowerment evaluation showed that principals who were fully engaged in their schools’ evaluations were more likely to be influenced by the evaluation process, use the evaluation results and build evaluation capacity than those who merely participated as a guest. They engaged in double-loop learning. We further found that …

Networking During Strategic Change In Small Organizations, Louis Grabowski, Lars Mathiassen Aug 2017

Networking During Strategic Change In Small Organizations, Louis Grabowski, Lars Mathiassen

Engaged Management ReView

Managers recognize change as their number one challenge with the vast majority of their initiatives ending in failure. Managers of small organizations are particularly challenged because these organizations have limited resources and they are particularly vulnerable to environmental dynamics. Against this backdrop, we conducted a qualitative, longitudinal study into a small organization that struggled with strategic change over a seven-year period. We draw on concepts from Actor Network Theory to reveal the importance of effective, conscious, and proactive networking with internal stakeholders and with the powerful, external players upon which small organizations depend. This perspective also emphasizes that managers must …

Mergers: What Ethical Leaders Can Do To Help Ensure Success, Barbie Pike

The Siegel Institute Journal of Applied Ethics

Abstract

This paper looks at several research articles which include discussions on the success and failures of mergers. Mergers continue to rise in number even though there is a lack of evidence showing positive results. Though failure rates for mergers are high, there is a large amount of research showing what organizations and more specifically leaders can do to ensure the success of mergers. This paper examines things that ethical leaders can do to positively impact the introduction, transition, and outcome of mergers when considering culture, the size of the organization, diversity, conflict, change, role modeling, team building, communication, planning …

Perspectives In Learning

Historically there have been many models of change introduced to attempt to improve student achievement. The purpose of this paper was to explore some of the elements of the change process. The researcher conducted a literature review of several of the leading theorists whose research suggests different factors contribute to the success or failure of adopting change. The research suggests the success or failure of adopting change starts with the leader. The research could assist other scholars to understand the many elements of the change process and the possibility of using a combination of those elements for successful implementation of …

Toward Arctic Transitions And Sustainability: Modeling Risks And Resilience Across Scales Of Governance, Berill Blair

Natural Resources

The Arctic region has been the subject of international attention in recent years. The magnitude of impacts from global climate change, land-use change, and speculations about economic development and accessible polar shipping lanes have intensified this focus. As a result, the potential to manage complex ecological, social and political relationships in the context of changes, risks and opportunities is the focus of a large and growing body of research. This dissertation contributes to the expanding scholarship on managing Arctic social-ecological systems for resilience by answering the question: What conditions improve cross-scale learning and resilience in nested social-ecological systems experiencing rapid …

A Roundtable On Cross-Sector Collaboration And Resource Alignment For Health Equity: Meeting Summary, Onyemaechi Nweke Aug 2017

A Roundtable On Cross-Sector Collaboration And Resource Alignment For Health Equity: Meeting Summary, Onyemaechi Nweke

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Cross-sector collaboration is a highly recommended strategy to eliminate health inequities nationally and globally. In the federal sector, it is evolving into an important approach for solving complex social problems, as evidenced by its steady proliferation the past few decades. Despite the increased adoption of cross-sector collaboration, it is still not a default strategy or preeminent option for managing complex social problems. In September 2015, the Federal Interagency Health Equity Team (FIHET) hosted a Roundtable event to discuss opportunities and strategies to foster widespread adoption of cross-sector collaboration and resource alignment. The Roundtable featured several expert panelists and participants from …

Mapping The Alignment Of Programmatic Mission, Functions And Outcomes With The Attainment Of Health Equity: An Overview Of The Approach And Initial Outcomes Through The Lens Of The Usda’S Cyfar Scp Program, Onyemaechi Nweke, Kara Ryan, Mpp, Bonita Williams, Phd

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Eliminating health disparities is a priority across national agenda and initiatives such as the National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparities (NPA), the National Prevention Strategy, and Healthy People 2020. To advance this priority under the NPA, the Federal Interagency Health Equity Team (FIHET), which is an NPA federal cross-sector and collaborative platform, initiated a voluntary pilot “health equity mapping” exercise in 2014. This exercise served as a strategy to clarify the strategic alignment between participant federal partner program missions, goals, and activities, and the goal to end health disparities and promote health equity. The mapping process included an …

Combating Workplace Violence: An Evidence-Based Initiative, Diana L. Giordano Aug 2017

Combating Workplace Violence: An Evidence-Based Initiative, Diana L. Giordano

Creating Healthy Work Environments (CHWE)

Multiple factors (e.g., a misperception of what constitutes violence and lack of administrative response following violent events) may precipitate a lack of compliance in hospital employees' reporting patient-to-staff violent incidents, as well as lead to poor staff perception of personal safety and support from hospital administration. Lack of recognition of the true incidence and underreporting of verbal violence, which often precedes physical violence, may contribute to a false sense of security within a healthcare facility.

The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project is to evaluate the effectiveness of instituting an institutional practice policy, implemented on (a) reports of patient-to-staff …

Containerizing Containment: The Automation And Globalization Of The National Security Waterfront, 1945-1997, John Douglas Forrest

Theses and Dissertations

After the introduction of the cargo container and related automation systems in the late 1950s, the numbers of maritime laborers who worked along the piers and aboard ship along American waterways steadily declined. In the late 1950s, tens of thousands of longshoremen and merchant mariners plied their respective trades, but the process of “containerization” reduced their numbers by nearly 70 percent by the late 1980s and early 1990s. The Department of Defense (DoD) similarly containerized and automated its cargo handling during this era. The introduction of the container also had negative consequences for defense maritime policy. Containerization of the National …

Have We Overlooked The Benefits Of Nas, James C. Rich Aug 2017

Have We Overlooked The Benefits Of Nas, James C. Rich

Doctor of Business Administration Dissertations

Are nonaudit services (NAS) good or bad? Regulators, investors, and the professional accounting community have intensely debated this question for the last five decades. While seemingly a simple question, the abundance of conflicting literature surrounding this topic has indicated that the answer is anything but simple. The professional accounting community maintains that joint provision of the audit engagement and NAS results in a more in-depth knowledge base that positively impacts the auditor/client relationship. Regulators and investors have taken an opposing view by arguing that NAS lead auditors to compromise their independence. While an extensive body of literature has sought to …

The Role Of Cognitive And Affective Change Readiness In The Adoption Of Information Systems: A Multilevel Perspective, Martin J. Ndicu Aug 2017

The Role Of Cognitive And Affective Change Readiness In The Adoption Of Information Systems: A Multilevel Perspective, Martin J. Ndicu

Theses and Dissertations

Extant information systems literature has viewed systems acceptance and adoption from a technocentric viewpoint that emphasizes post-implementation intentions and attitudes - mainly usefulness and ease of use. Further, the effects of organizational hierarchy and work-environment factors have not been adequately factored largely because the single level user-level perspective has dominated. This dissertation addresses this gap by incorporating work environment factors while focusing on users’ preliminary, pre-implementation attitudes, perceptions, and intentions. It thus employs a multilevel perspective that allows for deeper insights into the interplay between workgroup- and individual-level phenomena. The objectives herein are, first, to illuminate change readiness as a …

The Relationship Of Conscience And Ethical Climate Among Registered Nurses In The Acute Care Environment, Theresa A. Kyzar

Dissertations

Although there has been extensive research on factors contributing to moral distress, burnout, and turnover intentions in the nursing profession, there has been limited research on the relationship of conscience and ethical climate. Both the ethical climate theory and moral distress theory were utilized to guide the implementation of this study. A predictive correlational design was utilized to determine the relationship between the variables defined as perceptions of conscience, hospital ethical climate and stress of conscience. A purposive, non-probability-based sampling of 193 registered nurses throughout the state of Louisiana was surveyed using a web-based survey instrument.

Evaluation Of A Pilot Multidisciplinary Debriefing Program: Promoting Pediatric Provider Emotional, Social, And Spiritual Wellbeing, Allison E. Reynolds

Doctoral Projects

Regular exposure to trauma, such as the act of bearing witness to intense suffering and pain of pediatric patients and families, has a significant effect on healthcare professionals. Despite the fact that traumatic situations in pediatrics are a reality, there is little education and few interventions focused on how to prepare and support healthcare providers to care for dying children and families or for other clinically challenging situations. Pediatric residency program directors within a large, freestanding children’s hospital identified a subjective need for support for their pediatric residents in dealing with clinically challenging situations faced during residency, motivating residency program …

Implementing For Success And Sustainability, Michele Paulo Aug 2017

Implementing For Success And Sustainability, Michele Paulo

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Nurses, including those with additional education and training as professional development specialists, face challenges to implementing evidenced-based practice changes effectively and efficiently. Nurse bedside performance can drift away from evidence-based practice (EBP) and revert to methods previously taught when the strategy, planning and implementation lacks resources to support sustainable change. While knowledge and skills attainment are important, they do not ensure the successful transition in practice change at the point of care. An intervention has been developed that integrates several evidence-based implementation concepts and frameworks into a single framework named the Identify and DRIVE framework. Additionally, the Identify and DRIVE …
