Response To Intervention: A Study Of Intervention Programs In Rural Secondary Schools, Richard William Wylie Jr. Oct 2017

Response To Intervention: A Study Of Intervention Programs In Rural Secondary Schools, Richard William Wylie Jr.

Dissertations

During the late 20th and early 21st centuries, a trend developed for schools to meet the needs of struggling and at-risk learners through the implementation of multi-tiered response to intervention models (Apple, 2014). Response to intervention (RtI) is one of those frameworks and has been extensively researched from the perspective of those working in urban elementary schools (Burns & Gibbons, 2013). This research project was designed to allow for better understanding of the rural secondary perspective of RtI through investigation of the perceptions of administrators, counselors, and educators who have implemented RtI frameworks. This qualitative examination resulted in a narrative …

Technological advances, globalization, network complexity, and social complexity complicate almost every aspect of our organizations and environments. Leadership educators are challenged with developing leaders who can sense environmental cues, adapt to rapidly changing contexts, and thrive in uncertainty while adhering to their values systems. In a complex leadership context, inadequate leader responses can result in devastating organizational impacts akin to the butterfly effect from chaos theory. This paper advances a simple model for leadership education based on a program we designed to develop leaders who understand the nature of complex systems, reliably use their ethical value systems, are emotionally intelligent …

Examination Of The Qm Process: Making A Case For Transformative Professional Development Model, Radwan Ali, James Wright Oct 2017

Examination Of The Qm Process: Making A Case For Transformative Professional Development Model, Radwan Ali, James Wright

Faculty Articles

Distance learning has altered the landscape of higher education, and the rapid proliferation of online courses and programs present new challenges for both faculty and administrators. The literature suggests that faculty must have a wide range of technical and pedagogical skills to be successful online teachers (Betts, 2009; Koehler, Mishra, & Yahya, 2007; Puzziferro & Shelton, 2009). To ensure quality and consistency of online courses, many universities have adopted an industry-standard, quality assurance review framework. In this case, faculty members are required to attend a basic professional development seminar outlining the parts of the rubric and the submission and review …

Communication and team-based care are at the heart of patient safety. As anesthesia professionals, we witness this at its very best and worst when transferring patients to and from the operating room (see article by Dr. Lorinc on types of transfers in this issue). In response, we have an opportunity to take a leading role in redesigning the most ubiquitous teaming event in hospitals in a manner that promotes team-based behaviors. The impact of unreliable handoffs on communication failures and medical errors is well known. To combat this issue, mandates by The Joint Commission (TJC) in 2006 and the American …

Implications In Implementing Self-Managed Teams In Organizations, Aayushi Gupta, Alex Tacco Melendez, Janet Rosenthal, Lipishree Vrushabhendra

Engineering and Technology Management Student Projects

Over the past few decades, organizations have developed workplace teams that are multi-faceted, diverse and classified or divided by objective. These teams are essentially turning out to be instrumental in innovation and change in organizations. One such work team that has evoked interest in the recent past is the self-managed team. The design, structure and performance of self-managed teams varies from the other teams significantly. Nevertheless, these teams like the other workplace teams share common benefits such as increased knowledge and skills, synergy and commitment. The main difference lies in the way these teams work. The objective of this research …

The article content includes a practical example of Kirkpatrick's evaluation model and a description of how a goal-based evaluation led to planned program modifications.

Population Health Research: Early Description Of The Organizational Shift Toward Population Health Management And Defining A Vision For Leadership., Kristi L. Caldararo, David B. Nash Oct 2017

Population Health Research: Early Description Of The Organizational Shift Toward Population Health Management And Defining A Vision For Leadership., Kristi L. Caldararo, David B. Nash

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

As health care delivery systems adapt to the changing marketplace, many struggle to define a clear strategy that will prove successful in managing the health of entire populations. The federal government continues to put increasing pressure on organizations to shift away from the traditional way of delivering episodic care and move toward managing populations as a whole-before, during, and after a patient presents in a health care facility. Private payers have begun to follow suit as risk-based payer contracts and bundled payment models become increasingly popular. For organizations to adequately influence the health outcomes of a population, they must be …

Meeting The Challenge Of Burnout, Christina Maslach Phd Sep 2017

Meeting The Challenge Of Burnout, Christina Maslach Phd

Symposium Presentations Archives

There is growing evidence of the challenge that burnout poses for everyone in health care. But what is the evidence about the causes of burnout, and how can that be translated into effective solutions? Innovative answers to this challenge need to focus more on how to change critical sources of burnout within the job context, rather than simply helping people cope with the negative effects. These proposed solutions must be implemented and evaluated systematically, in order to establish what are truly the best practices for beating burnout. Such an approach will lead to a better vision of healthy workplaces for …

Gendered Ambition: Career Advancement In Public Schools, Robert Maranto, Manuel P. Teodoro, Albert Cheng, Kristen Carroll Sep 2017

Gendered Ambition: Career Advancement In Public Schools, Robert Maranto, Manuel P. Teodoro, Albert Cheng, Kristen Carroll

Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications

We explore the relationships between gender, career ambition, and the emergence of executive leadership. In Bureaucratic Ambition, Teodoro (2011) shows that public administration career systems shape bureaucrats’ ambitions, political behavior, and management strategies. But career systems are not neutral conduits of talent: administrators are more likely to pursue advancement when career systems favor them. This research proposes that women and men respond to gendered public career systems. Using national and state-level data on public school managers, we find marked gender disparities in the career paths that lead educators from the classroom to the superintendent post. Specifically, we find that female …

Integrating A Trauma-Informed Care Perspective In Baccalaureate Social Work Education: Guiding Principles, Matthew L. Vasquez, Shamra Boel-Studt

Faculty Publications

Over the past decade, there has been substantial growth in empirical evidence supporting that proper assessment and treatment of trauma using evidence-based practices can effectively reduce a wide range of symptoms in both children and adults. Given the complex nature of trauma treatment, trauma-based educational programming in social work is most commonly found at the graduate level. Yet, to date, there has been little discussion calling for the inclusion of trauma content in BSW education. In this paper, we examine the current state of trauma-content inclusion in social work education, and offer a guiding framework for integrating core trauma content …

Electronic Health Record Template Customization And The Impact On Nursing Satisfaction And Documentation Compliance, Autumn Engstrom Sep 2017

Electronic Health Record Template Customization And The Impact On Nursing Satisfaction And Documentation Compliance, Autumn Engstrom

DNP and Student Works

Documentation is a crucial component of safe and effective patient care. A priority for health care organizations is to ensure their electronic health record (EHR) systems are used safely and effectively. They should be clinically operational, user-friendly, and suit the needs of the end user (HealthIT.gov, 2017). If EHR templates do not exist, are not customized to the needs of the user, or are not user-friendly, risks of failing to maintain proper documentation exist (Mosher, Lose, Leslie, Pennathur, & Kaboli, 2015). The purpose of this project was to develop and implement an EHR template for obstetrical and postpartum nurses to …

Leveraging Positive Psychological Capital (Psycap) In Crisis: A Multiphase Framework, Ivana Milosevic, A. Erin Bass, Djordje Milosevic

Marketing and Management Faculty Publications

Despite recent advancements in understanding of leadership in context, there is surprisingly little insight into leadership in crisis – a context that is both pervasive and particularly challenging. To provide insight into how leaders navigate crisis, we utilize historical sources of Sir Winston Churchill’s leadership during World War II (WWII) to analyze 1) which resources may leaders use in crisis and 2) how they leverage these resources to lead through and out of the crisis. We discover that positive psychological capital (PsyCap) is a core strategic resource that leaders leverage in crisis. Our findings suggest that leaders leverage PsyCap as …

Impact Of Daily Electrocardiographic Electrode Changes Upon Technical Related Cardiac Monitor Alarm Events, Deborah H. Smith Sep 2017

Impact Of Daily Electrocardiographic Electrode Changes Upon Technical Related Cardiac Monitor Alarm Events, Deborah H. Smith

DNP and Student Works

Alarm fatigue occurs when excessive alarms cause nurses to disregard alarms posing a significant patient safety threat. This quality improvement project utilized the plan-do-check-act approach to examine the impact of daily electrocardiographic electrode changes on the frequency of technical related cardiac monitor alarm events on two adult nursing units. All technical related cardiac monitor alarm events decreased during the intervention period; specifically, by 20.6% and 71.0% on the first and second nursing unit respectively.

In doing so, the study adopts an original approach, focusing on the evolution in the socio-economic context, imposed by globalisation first and by the Great Recession afterwards. Hence, the review covers a wide range of literature and subjects, including political science, sociology, economics, finance and strategic management. Departing from the contextual picture, the study identifies the main drivers of the innovation of the business models, from the adoption of voluntary standards to …

Justifying Debate As “Cerebral Gymnastics” And As “Glorification Of The Experience Of Play”: An Alternative To William Hawley Davis’S Rejection Of The “Debate As Gaming” Vision For Debate, Matthew P. Brigham Sep 2017

Justifying Debate As “Cerebral Gymnastics” And As “Glorification Of The Experience Of Play”: An Alternative To William Hawley Davis’S Rejection Of The “Debate As Gaming” Vision For Debate, Matthew P. Brigham

Speaker & Gavel

William Hawley Davis’s “Is Debate Primarily A Game?” (1916) represents an early, prominent effort to justify academic, intercollegiate debate and also, indirectly, societal debate. Davis sharply rebukes those who would conceptualize and/or practice academic debate as if it were a game, arguing instead for a version of debate that more closely approximates real democratic deliberation and thus cultivates the training necessary for meaningful public participation on serious issues. This essay explores other possible justifications for debate, including those that might re-claim play, game, and/or sport. Such alternatives suggest the importance of conceiving debate beyond tragic frames and Platonic Truth claims, …

Nine Potential Solutions To Abate Grade Inflation At Regionally Accredited Online U.S. Universities: An Intrinsic Case Study, David Blum

The Qualitative Report

Grade inflation must be abated. The effect of grade inflation weakens academic standards to the point where accurately assessing levels of competency and student knowledge is difficult to determine. Using intrinsic case study design, I contacted 411 online instructors in the United States exploring potential solutions to abate grade inflation. Of 411 faculty members contacted via personal e-mail, 27 instructors at three regionally accredited online universities in the United States agreed to be interviewed by the use of an interview protocol and recorded via Skype. The research question guiding the study was “What are potential solutions to abate grade inflation?” …

Reflections On The Implementation Of Improved Outcomes For Children And Its Impact On The Capacity Of Child Welfare Workers To Deliver Services, Rita Sanchez-Torres Sep 2017

Reflections On The Implementation Of Improved Outcomes For Children And Its Impact On The Capacity Of Child Welfare Workers To Deliver Services, Rita Sanchez-Torres

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The emergence of the New Public Management with its emphasis on performance measurements and managerial strategies such as accountability, efficiency, and cost effectiveness have encouraged nonprofit child welfare agencies in New York City to pursue the practice of the private sector. In the current environment, service delivery has become more entrepreneurial, strategic and outcome minded on the assumption that the market-oriented approach is more effective (Watson-Bishop, 2007). This study examines the relationship between policy and service delivery. Specifically, it investigates the impact of the initiative known as Improved Outcomes for Children on child welfare supervisors in a managerial environment.
