Characteristics Of Streptococcus Salivarius Bd3900 As An Oral Probiotics, Yu Yanan, Wu Zhengjun, Han Jin
Food and Machinery
Interactions between Streptococcus salivarius and Streptococcus mutans play important roles in the development of dental biolms in oral cavity. S. salivarius BD3900, isolated from the oral cavity of a healthy voluteer, displayed the potential to be an oral probiotics in vitro. Strong hydrophobicity (95.8%) and high surface charges(≥88.6%) endure the strain to be easily adhered in oral cavity. The strain BD3900 was tolerant to 100 μg/mL lysozyme(2.0×104 U/mg), indicating the high ability for the strain to survive in oral cavity. Besides, the strain was determined to be with high auto-aggregating ability(15%~20%) as well as co-aggregating abiltity with Streptococcus mutans.in the …

Methane- And Dissolved Organic Carbon-Fueled Microbial Loop Supports A Tropical Subterranean Estuary Ecosystem, D. Brankovits, J. W. Pohlman, H. Niemann
KIP Articles
Subterranean estuaries extend inland into density-stratified coastal carbonate aquifers containing a surprising diversity of endemic animals (mostly crustaceans) within a highly oligotrophic habitat. How complex ecosystems (termed anchialine) thrive in this globally distributed, cryptic environment is poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that a microbial loop shuttles methane and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to higher trophic levels of the anchialine food web in the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico). Methane and DOC production and consumption within the coastal groundwater correspond with a microbial community capable of methanotrophy, heterotrophy, and chemoautotrophy, based on characterization by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and respiratory quinone composition. …

Indoor Garden, Yuge Wang
Theses
A garden has a similar meaning in different cultures which is an expression of an individual’s or culture’s philosophy. It also has a long history in China. In the past, each Chinese scholar had an intimate garden which was a reflection of their inner world. But this garden culture was tightly connected with the lifestyle at that time. Many people living in modern society feel that they have lost their attachment to a traditional garden, which is too far away from daily life and only can be appreciated in a picture album. As a person who has a great interest …

DNP and Student Works
This process improvement initiative implemented a policy for medical assistants (MAs) to perform and record point of care (POC) glucose test results in the electronic medical record (EMR), for all patients with diabetes during clinic check-in. Actions and behaviors of practice staff were evaluated to determine how POC results affected clinician treatment decisions. A retrospective review of staff recorded (EMR) data was assessed at baseline, after a 2-week run-in, and 4-weeks prospectively. This initiative was implemented in a small group internal medicine practice, treating predominantly low-income, Hispanic immigrant patients in Texas.
Differential Suitability Of 12 Great Lakes Tree Species For Papilio Canadensis (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) Larval Survival And Growth, J. Mark Scriber
Differential Suitability Of 12 Great Lakes Tree Species For Papilio Canadensis (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) Larval Survival And Growth, J. Mark Scriber
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Differential nutritional suitabilities of the 12 potential host plants of Papilio canadensis in the Great Lakes region of North America were determined with gravimetric techniques for penultimate and final larval instars. While leaf water content and leaf nitrogen content explain some of the variation, allelochemicals in different plants are likely to be involved in differential larval growth performances as well as mortal- ity of neonate larvae on tuliptree and spicebush. Oviposition tests using 3-choice arenas with quaking aspen, paper birch, and balsam poplar showed no strong host preferences. Factors affecting patterns of Papilio host use in the Great Lakes region …

Toxic Phenolic Glycosides From Populus: Physiological Adaptations Of The Western North American Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly, Papilio Rutulus (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), J. Mark Scriber, Richard L. Lindroth, James K. Nitao
The Great Lakes Entomologist
The phenolic glycosides tremulacin and salicortin found in quaking aspen, Populus tremuloides, and other members of the Salicaceae, are known to be toxic to larvae of the Eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly, Papilio glaucus, but not to the Canadian tiger swallowtail, P. canadensis. Larvae of the western tiger swallowtail, P. rutulus, were not killed nor were their growth rates suppressed when fed a mixture of tremulacin and salicortin on black cherry leaves. When the Salicaceae adapted P. rutulus penultimate instar larvae were fed a combination of the two phenolic glycosides and the esterase inhibitor (DEF S,S,S-tributylphosphorotrithioate), growth …

Foodplant Processing Adaptations In Four Hyalophora Species (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae): Regional And Taxonomic Specialization, J. Mark Scriber, Eric Grabstein
The Great Lakes Entomologist
To determine whether local populations of four Hyalophora species (Lepidoptera: Satumiidae) had improved survival or were physiologically adapted for rapid and/or efficient growth on their local hosts, a series of larval feeding studies were conducted using gravimetric techniques on several host plant species. Significantly better survival and growth performances were observed for H. columbia (a tamarack specialist) on its host, Larix laricina. Similarly, H. gloveri had the best growth performance on Elaeagnus angustifolia (its favorite) as did certain sympatric populations of H. cecropia on black cherry, Prunus serotina. Hyalophora gloveri and H. columbia are largely sympatric with Betula papyrifera …

Spatial-Temporal Distribution Of Mosquito Larval Hot Spots In Papoli, Uganda: A Community-Based Approach To Mosquito Control, Ryan E. Tokarz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Mosquito species of the Anopheles gambaie complex are the predominant vectors of malaria transmission throughout sub-Saharan Africa. These mosquitoes tend to be endophilic, as well as anthropophilic, making them prime candidates for disease transmission. Within the same region, related mosquito vectors play a significant role in the transmission of additional human and zoonotic diseases. Furthermore, mosquito nuisance biting is an immense issue that cannot be ignored in terms of its impact on African communities. Depending on the respective factors involved, mosquito control programs throughout the continent have attempted to tackle these issues in a multitude of ways. This research approached …

For The Greater Good: The Subordination Of Reproductive Freedom To State Interests In The United States And China, Marisa S. Cianciarulo
Akron Law Review
This Article provides a comparative analysis of two very different restrictions on reproductive freedom that have startling parallels and similarities. Both China and the United States impose limits on reproductive freedom: China restricts the number of children that families can have, often in ways that violate international law, while some U.S. states have attempted to restrict access to abortion in ways that violate the precepts of Roe v. Wade as well as international law. Both China and U.S. states impose restrictions on reproductive freedom in order to achieve compelling state goals: protecting development and sustainability in China, and protecting prenatal …
