No Evidence For Trace Metal Limitation On Anaerobic Carbon Mineralization In Three Peatland Soils, Jason K. Keller, Jillian Wade Nov 2017

No Evidence For Trace Metal Limitation On Anaerobic Carbon Mineralization In Three Peatland Soils, Jason K. Keller, Jillian Wade

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Peatlands store roughly one-third of the terrestrial soil carbon and release the potent greenhouse gas methane (CH4) to the atmosphere, making these wetlands among the most important ecosystems in the global carbon cycle. Despite their importance, the controls of anaerobic decomposition of organic matter to carbon dioxide (CO2) and CH4 within peatlands are not well understood. It is known, however, that the enzymes responsible for CH4 production require cobalt, iron and nickel, and there is a growing appreciation for the potential role of trace metal limitation in anaerobic decomposition. To explore the possibility of …

Comparing And Contrasting Special Education In The United States And Jamaica, Sarah Searle

Senior Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to define, compare and contrast special education services in the United States and Jamaica. Both the United States and Jamaica seeks to provide special education services and resources to students with disabilities. However, protective laws, training, and special services provided for citizens with disabilities range drastically between the countries. This thesis will define disabilities prevalent in the classroom and the services offered for the protection and provision of equal opportunity to all students. Recent laws and requirements for public schools have influenced the trajectory of special education in both countries. As this thesis progresses, …

Toward Improving Metalloenzyme Inhibitor Design: A Thermodynamic Study Of Small Molecule Interactions With Copper(Ii), Cobalt(Ii) And Manganese(Ii), Fatimah Aldakheel Nov 2017

Toward Improving Metalloenzyme Inhibitor Design: A Thermodynamic Study Of Small Molecule Interactions With Copper(Ii), Cobalt(Ii) And Manganese(Ii), Fatimah Aldakheel

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

This work aimed at understanding the interactions of 1) three physiologically relevant transition metal ions copper(II), cobalt(II) and manganese(II) with five tri- or tetra-dentate metal chelators (ligand or L) and 2) the resulting ML complexes with two known metalloenzyme inhibitors, 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) and acetohydroxamic acid (AHA). The ultimate goal of the work was to identify ligands that can form enzyme active site M2+ structural mimetics capable of interacting with metalloenzyme active site inhibitors. The ligands studied were N-(2-(1-methylimidazolyl)methyl)iminodiacetic acid (DA2Im), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TREN), tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPA), and bis(2-picolyl)amine (BPA) and they were chosen to mimic the coordination environment …

How Socioeconomic Disadvantages Get Under The Skin And Into The Brain To Influence Health Development Across The Lifespan, Pilyoung Kim, Gary W. Evans, Edith Chen, Gregory Miller, Teresa Seeman Nov 2017

How Socioeconomic Disadvantages Get Under The Skin And Into The Brain To Influence Health Development Across The Lifespan, Pilyoung Kim, Gary W. Evans, Edith Chen, Gregory Miller, Teresa Seeman

Psychology: Faculty Scholarship

Socioeconomic disadvantage (SED) has adverse impacts on physical (Adler and Rehkopf 2008; Blair and Raver 2012; Braverman and Egerter 2008; Cohen et al. 2010; Poulton et al. 2002) and psychological (Adler and Rehkopf 2008; Bradley and Corwyn 2002; Grant et al. 2003) health development. SED is similar to low socioeconomic status (SES) which is based on occupation, income, and education or a composite of more than one of these indicators (McLoyd 1998). However, we conceptualize SED more broadly than socioeconomic status to also include subjective perception of social position and contextual indicators of disadvantage, such as neighborhood deprivation. One of …

Host Plant Suitability And A Test Of The Feeding Specialization Hypothesis Using Papilio Cresphontes (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), J. Mark Scriber, Robert V. Dowell Nov 2017

Host Plant Suitability And A Test Of The Feeding Specialization Hypothesis Using Papilio Cresphontes (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), J. Mark Scriber, Robert V. Dowell

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The concept that host plant favorites would be used for more rapid and/or efficient growth of the "locally adapted" individuals was tested in a preliminary way using the giant swallowtail butterfly, Papilio cresphontes. Populations feeding only on northern prickly ash, Zanthoxylum americanum (from Wisconsin), primarily (or exclusively) on hoptree, Ptelea trifoliata (in Ohio) and on lime prickly ash, Z. fagara, or Citrus, (in Florida) were compared on alternate hosts and on their actual local hosts under controlled environmental conditions. While the results with final instar larvae generally support the feeding specialization hypothesis with regard to more rapid …

Interaction Of Introgression From Papilio Glaucus Canadensis And Diapause In Producing "Spring Form" Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterflies, P. Glaucus (Lepidoptera: Palilionidae), J. Mark Scriber Nov 2017

Interaction Of Introgression From Papilio Glaucus Canadensis And Diapause In Producing "Spring Form" Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterflies, P. Glaucus (Lepidoptera: Palilionidae), J. Mark Scriber

The Great Lakes Entomologist

The small early "spring form" of the eastern tiger swallowtail butterfly, Papilio glaucus has been described from Massachusetts and Illinois in the north, southward all the way into North Carolina. The wing size, shape, patterns, and color all resemble the northern subspecies, P.g. canadensis. The possibility was explored that the "spring form" could in fact be a reflection of genetic introgression from the northern subspecies into P.g. glaucus populations with laboratory hybrid and back cross studies between P.g. glaucus and P.g. canadensis under controlled environments on common foodplants. In addition, morphometric multivariate discriminant analyses of 18 wing characters showed …

Double Trouble: Commingled Effects Of Fast Food And Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption And The Intervening Role Of Physical Activity On Childhood Obesity, Christopher Berry, Scot Burton, Elizabeth Howlett Nov 2017

Double Trouble: Commingled Effects Of Fast Food And Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Consumption And The Intervening Role Of Physical Activity On Childhood Obesity, Christopher Berry, Scot Burton, Elizabeth Howlett

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Children are exposed to a great deal of food and beverage promotion. This is particularly concerning given that the prevalence of childhood obesity, a critical public health challenge, may be partially due to the increased consumption of fast food and sugar-sweetened beverages. However, there are lingering questions about the complex relationships between fast food and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, physical activity levels, and childhood obesity. To address these complex relationships, this research examines the interaction of fast food and sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, along with the frequency of physical activity, in leading to the likelihood of a child being overweight or obese. …

Alcohol And Cancer Stem Cells, Mei Xu, Jia Luo Nov 2017

Alcohol And Cancer Stem Cells, Mei Xu, Jia Luo

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Heavy alcohol consumption has been associated with increased risk of several cancers, including cancer of the colon, rectum, female breast, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, liver, and esophagus. It appears that alcohol exposure not only promotes carcinogenesis but also enhances the progression and aggressiveness of existing cancers. The molecular mechanisms underlying alcohol tumor promotion, however, remain unclear. Cancer stem cells (CSC), a subpopulation of cancer cells with self-renewal and differentiation capacity, play an important role in tumor initiation, progression, metastasis, recurrence, and therapy resistance. The recent research evidence suggests that alcohol increases the CSC population in cancers, which may underlie alcohol-induced …

Monitoring And Management Of Hypertension With Obesity In Adolescents., Bonita Falkner

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Largely due to the childhood obesity epidemic, there has been an increase in the prevalence of hypertension in children and adolescents. Obesity associated hypertension is the most common hypertension phenotype among adolescents. Approximately 30% of obese adolescents have elevated blood pressure (BP) or hypertension. Updated definitions of elevated BP and hypertension in adolescents are now similar to definitions of BP status in adults. For adolescents ≥13 years of age, elevated BP is 120 to 129/Hypertension, stage 1, is ≥130 to 139/80 to 89 mm Hg, and hypertension, stage 2, is ≥140/90 mm Hg. BP measurements over separate clinic visits are …

Natural Bioactive Compounds: Alternative Approach To The Treatment Of Glioblastoma Multiforme, Vilas Desai, Alok Bhushan Nov 2017

Natural Bioactive Compounds: Alternative Approach To The Treatment Of Glioblastoma Multiforme, Vilas Desai, Alok Bhushan

College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most frequent, primary malignant brain tumor prevalent in humans. GBM characteristically exhibits aggressive cell proliferation and rapid invasion of normal brain tissue resulting in poor patient prognosis. The current standard of care of surgical resection followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy with temozolomide is not very effective. The inefficacy of the chemotherapeutic agents may be attributed to the challenges in drug delivery to the tumor. Several epidemiological studies have demonstrated the chemopreventive role of natural, dietary compounds in the development and progression of cancer. Many of these studies have reported the potential of using natural compounds …

Off To The Breast Start: Barriers To Exclusive Breastfeeding, Yasmin Mcbryde Nov 2017

Off To The Breast Start: Barriers To Exclusive Breastfeeding, Yasmin Mcbryde

Master's Projects and Capstones

Breastfeeding is a beneficial way to provide food for the healthy growth and development of infants. Breastfeeding also provides many health benefits for mothers. Review of evidence based data indicates that breastfeeding exclusively for 6 months is one of the healthiest and most natural sustenance for a baby. Unfortunately, there are many barriers that prevent mothers from breastfeeding for the recommended duration. The aim of this project is to assess the level of influence that cultural upbringing has on breastfeeding in public. I administered surveys to women and men for data collection. The findings indicate that participants have strong and …

“If I Don’T Take Care Of Myself, I Can’T Take Care Of Them:” Exploring Caregiving Grandmothers’ Experiences Of A 9-Session Self-Care Curriculum, Jacquelyn J. Lee Phd, Lcsw, Stacey R. Kolomer Phd

GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy

Abstract

The predominance of research on custodial grandparent caregiving focuses on prevalence, risk factors, and challenges; less attention has been paid to the development of interventions to support this population. In response to a decrease in length of service provision at a local agency, a 9-session self-care curriculum was designed to focus on caregiver health through the empowering, multi-dimensional practice of self-care. The curriculum uses a mind-body approach and was integrated into a pre-existing 9-month support program for grandparents raising grandchildren. Using a basic, interpretive qualitative design, the purpose of this study was to explore how grandparent caregivers: 1) understand …

Novel Calcium-Related Targets Of Insulin In Hippocampal Neurons, Shaniya Maimaiti, Hilaree N. Frazier, Katie L. Anderson, Adam O. Ghoweri, Lawrence D. Brewer, Nada M. Porter, Olivier Thibault Nov 2017

Novel Calcium-Related Targets Of Insulin In Hippocampal Neurons, Shaniya Maimaiti, Hilaree N. Frazier, Katie L. Anderson, Adam O. Ghoweri, Lawrence D. Brewer, Nada M. Porter, Olivier Thibault

Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

Both insulin signaling disruption and Ca2+ dysregulation are closely related to memory loss during aging and increase the vulnerability to Alzheimer's disease (AD). In hippocampal neurons, aging-related changes in calcium regulatory pathways have been shown to lead to higher intracellular calcium levels and an increase in the Ca2+-dependent afterhyperpolarization (AHP), which is associated with cognitive decline. Recent studies suggest that insulin reduces the Ca2+-dependent AHP. Given the sensitivity of neurons to insulin and evidence that brain insulin signaling is reduced with age, insulin-mediated alterations in calcium homeostasis may underlie the beneficial actions of insulin in …

Wallington, Mary Greaney, Marcia M. Tavares Machado, Gabriela P. De Andrade

Public Health Faculty Publications

Latina women in the United States (U.S.) are disproportionately affected by obesity and are more likely to begin pregnancy overweight and gain excessive weight during pregnancy. The prenatal care period represents a window of opportunity for women to access the healthcare system and receive preventive services, education, nutritional support, and other social services to improve pregnancy outcomes. Excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) has numerous negative short- and long-term consequences for both the mother and newborn. We explored nulliparous Latina women’s perceptions about their experiences communicating with their primary healthcare provider about GWG and physical activity (PA) to identify possible intervention …

Teaching For Epidemiological Literacy: Description, Prescription, And Critical Thinking, Peter J. Taylor Nov 2017

Teaching For Epidemiological Literacy: Description, Prescription, And Critical Thinking, Peter J. Taylor

Working Papers on Science in a Changing World

This working paper describes contrasting ideas for a sequence of topics as presented to students in a graduate course on epidemiological literacy. The premise of the pedagogical approach is that researchers develop their epidemiological thinking and practice over time through interactions with other researchers who have a variety of in-practice commitments, such as to kinds of cases and methods of analysis, and not simply to a philosophical framework for explanation. In descriptively teasing out what epidemiologists do in practice through a topic-by-topic presentation, I am prescriptively encouraging discussants to draw purposefully from across the range of topics and contrasting …
