Isn't It Organic?, Jerry Zezima

Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Blog

Whenever I go food shopping, which is once in a blue moon, at which time I head directly to the beer aisle so I can buy a six-pack of Blue Moon, I accompany my wife, Sue, who clips coupons, knows what's on sale and always carries a circular. This baffles me because circulars are rectangular, which is the admittedly feeble excuse I use for rarely going to the supermarket.

BACKGROUND: While age and the APOE ε4 allele are major risk factors for Alzheimer's disease (AD), a small percentage of individuals with these risk factors exhibit AD resilience by living well beyond 75 years of age without any clinical symptoms of cognitive decline.

METHODS: We used over 200 "AD resilient" individuals and an innovative, pedigree-based approach to identify genetic variants that segregate with AD resilience. First, we performed linkage analyses in pedigrees with resilient individuals and a statistical excess of AD deaths. Second, we used whole genome sequences to identify candidate SNPs in significant linkage regions. Third, we replicated SNPs …

Authorizing Illicit Intimacies: Filipina–Gi Interracial Relations In The Postwar Philippines, Stephanie Fajardo Nov 2017

Authorizing Illicit Intimacies: Filipina–Gi Interracial Relations In The Postwar Philippines, Stephanie Fajardo

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Intimate relations between American servicemen (GIs) and Filipina women increased visibly following the Second World War in the Philippines. As interactions became routine, women who developed close interpersonal relationships with GIs became associated with vice and loose morals. Thisarticle analyzes the multiple forces that maintained such associations, including the US military and local government’s interconnected forms of intimate management and Philippine cultural productions’ contradictory depictions of Filipino–American intimacies. It argues that the “bar system,” which arose from businesses exploiting sexual labor, the legal system combating prostitution, and health initiatives seeking to eradicate venereal disease, effectively authorized illicit intimacies. Keywords: US military …

The Feasibility Of Adopting An Evidence-Informed Tailored Exercise Program Within Adult Day Services: The Enhance Mobility Program., Diane King, S.A. Faulkner, Bridget Hanson

Reports

This article uses the RE-AIM framework to evaluate the feasibility of implementing Enhance Mobility (EM), a tailored, evidence-informed group exercise and walking program for older adults with dementia, into an adult day services center. Participant physical performance outcomes were measured at baseline and 8 months. Program staff were interviewed to understand implementation challenges. Participant outcomes did not change significantly, though gait speed improved from limited to community ambulation levels. Implementation challenges included space reallocation and adequate staffing. Adopting EM in adult day services is feasible, and has potential to reach older adults who could benefit from tailored exercise.

Moving Toward A Collective Impact Effort: The Volunteer Program Assessment, Sheridan Trent, Kelly Prange, Joseph A. Allen

Psychology Faculty Publications

Volunteers are essential to the operation of many nonprofits, but some experience challenges in retaining their volunteer workforce. The Volunteer Program Assessment (VPA) seeks to address this issue by helping organizations to identify strengths, growth areas, and recommendations for improving volunteer experiences. To maximize the effectiveness of VPA’s mission, the organization is moving toward a collective impact (CI) approach. Although not developed as a CI effort, the program currently exemplifies many of its characteristics, which have been instrumental in expanding reach to more organizations. We examine VPA’s alignment with collective impact and outline how VPA will continue to improve efforts.

Sex Trafficking: A Toolbox For Apn's, Nissa Berbawy

Graduate Research Projects

Abstract

Objective: As the fastest growing crime in the world (Walker-Rodriguez, & Hill, 2011) and with sex slaves found in all 50 states (Grace et al, 2014), finding a solution to the problem of sex slavery is critical. One study showed 63.3% of sex slave survivors were treated in the emergency department while enslaved, revealing an opportunity for healthcare providers to intervene (The Emergency Nurses Association, 2015). The purpose of this review of literature is to provide evidence based resources to better equip APN’s to identify, intervene, and refer sex slaves for successful rehabilitative services. Methods: Databases searched were …

Honors College Theses

This research provides some insight to multiple social issues in the American women society and using elements of those issues to develop a collection of evening wear garments. The collection will consist of a 4-look evening wear group, which attempts to represent each code of dress in this design market: cocktail, prom, bridesmaid and bridal, that will be constructed using context that correlates with that specific garment’s relative social issue. The following issues will be discussed: the millennials lack of knowledge when it comes to appropriate dress code for events, prom attire through the social media context, the real cost …

Critical And Higher Order Thinking Skills Required For Admission To Physical Therapist Education Programs: A Modified E-Delphi Study, Emily Shannon Hughes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Physical therapy has changed from its humble beginnings as informal classes for reconstruction aides (RAs) educated in gymnasiums to the professional education programs for students graduating with an entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy. The occupation, now a profession, complete with autonomy, direct access, and great responsibility for decision-making for those we care for has changed; however, the need for physical therapists to care for those with physical disabilities has not changed. In order for physical therapists to manage care, responsibility, and autonomy in the ever-changing economic and healthcare environment, physical therapist education programs need, as part of the admission process, …

The Effects Of Overfeeding On Body Composition: The Role Of Macronutrient Composition - A Narrative Review, Alex Leaf, Jose Antonio Nov 2017

The Effects Of Overfeeding On Body Composition: The Role Of Macronutrient Composition - A Narrative Review, Alex Leaf, Jose Antonio

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 10(8): 1275-1296, 2017. Compared to investigations on hypocaloric diets, the effects of chronic overfeeding have been less studied. It has been posited that consuming calories in excess of daily caloric requirements will result in a gain in body weight and in particular fat mass regardless of which macronutrient(s) are consumed. However, recent evidence suggests that there is a quantitative difference in protein versus carbohydrate and/or fat overfeeding as it relates to body composition. Protein overfeeding or the consumption of a high protein diet may not result in a gain in body weight or fat mass …

Cybergenics Ii: Precedent And Policy Vs. Plain Meaning, Nancy A. Haller

Maine Law Review

On September 20, 2002, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit issued a panel opinion concluding that a court may not authorize a creditors' committee to commence an avoidance action in the trustee's name, on behalf of a bankruptcy estate. The decision shocked the bankruptcy bar and raised such a stir that many commentators raised it to the status of one of the “top cases of the year.” Furthermore, within two months, the Second Circuit came down with a squarely contrary decision, reaffirming the validity of the practice within the Second Circuit and failing to even acknowledge recent …
