A Review Of Animal-Assisted Interventions In Long-Term Care Facilities, Jenna Ebener, Hunhui Oh
A Review Of Animal-Assisted Interventions In Long-Term Care Facilities, Jenna Ebener, Hunhui Oh
Faculty Publications - College of Social Work
Past research fails to make connections comparing appropriate settings for the benefits of different species of therapy and resident animals in long-term care facilities specifically for the elderly. Two types of animal-assisted interactions (therapy and resident) and four animal species (birds, cats, dogs, and fish) were compared. The findings were sorted into five categories of benefits (behavioral, mental, physical, physiological, and social) and three additional structural variables (affordability, accessibility, and cons). Appropriate activities for each species were also suggested. The review revealed it is important for the facility to consider its budget, number and ailments of residents, type of preferred …
Reconceiving Resilience: A New Guiding Principle For Financial Regulation?, Mary Dowell-Jones & Ross Buckley
Reconceiving Resilience: A New Guiding Principle For Financial Regulation?, Mary Dowell-Jones & Ross Buckley
Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business
Most postcrisis financial regulation is expressed to be in the pursuit of increasing the resilience of the global financial system. “Resilience” features in the formal title of the Basel III reforms to bank capital adequacy rules. This article explores the meaning of resilience from social-ecological systems science and applies it to international finance. We conclude that postcrisis financial regulation has in fact sought to build a stronger, more robust system, not a more resilient one. The regulation imposed on global systemically important financial institutions is designed to make these institutions too strong to fail, not give them the capacity to …
The Continuum Of State Sovereignty: A Commentary On African Elections, K.C. O’Rourke
The Continuum Of State Sovereignty: A Commentary On African Elections, K.C. O’Rourke
University of Baltimore Journal of International Law
Twenty-six African States hold elections between 2016 and 2017. More basic than campaign rhetoric and ethnocentric political jockeying, the state in Africa is ripe for a deeper engagement with notions of state sovereignty that are more relevant for this century as the African state seeks to exercise its core functions, protect its interests within its own geographic boundaries, and care for all of the people it seeks to govern. The intentional structuring of such a dialogue must be guided to secure the cornerstones of individual liberty and participatory democracy – two basic protective functions that uniquely belong to the nation-state. …
Evaluation Of Childhood Exposure To Lead In Community Water Systems In Maine, Nicholas Flavin
Evaluation Of Childhood Exposure To Lead In Community Water Systems In Maine, Nicholas Flavin
Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
The concentration of lead in Maine’s public drinking water was evaluated from 4,700 first-draw water samples collected from 358 Maine Community Water systems. Samples collected from 2012-2015 were obtained by request from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (MeCDC)’s Drinking Water Program.
Exposure and physiological uptake of lead can be mathematically modelled or predicted based on the amount of lead in “background” sources of contaminated media such as soil, dust, water, air or dietary items; the better the characterization of lead in these media, the better the exposure predictions. To assess childhood lead exposure, EPA recommends using the …

Talking With The Dead From Southern Mexico: Tracing Bioarchaeological Foundations And New Perspectives In Oaxaca, Ricardo Higelin Ponce De León, Guy David Hepp
Anthropology Faculty Publications
In recent years, bioarchaeological research has emerged as one of the principal tools for studying diverse aspects of ancient society through the analysis of human remains. Oaxaca, Mexico is a culturally diverse region of Mesoamerica that today boasts at least sixteen discrete ethnolinguistic groups. Bioarchaeology in Oaxaca has traditionally focused on the Late Formative and Classic period (500 BCE–800 CE) Zapotec city of Monte Albán, and on its hinterland. Largely descriptive, these studies provided basic discussions of health, nutrition, and funerary offerings. Beyond the Valley of Oaxaca, much less comprehensive bioarchaeological research has been undertaken to date. Never before have …

Background: Fundamental movements (FM) of children influence the willingness to engage in physical activity (PA). Thus, proper FM skills are the foundation for a lifespan of PA. Objective: This study examined what factors may affect children’s PA in relation to FM pattern capabilities. Methods: The study examined the influence of SES when three low-income schools were provided additional PA opportunities on days PE was not taught. FM patterns in relation to object control (OC) and locomotor skill (LC) development were evaluated on K (n = 871), 1st (n = 893), and 2nd graders (n = 829) using the Test of …

Apparent Sixth Sense In Theropod Evolution: The Making Of A Cretaceous Weathervane, Bruce M. Rothschild, Virginia Naples
Apparent Sixth Sense In Theropod Evolution: The Making Of A Cretaceous Weathervane, Bruce M. Rothschild, Virginia Naples
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Objective
Two separate and distinctive skills are necessary to find prey: Detection of its presence and determination of its location. Surface microscopy of the dentary of albertosaurines revealed a previously undescribed sensory modification, as will be described here. While dentary “foramina” were previously thought to contain tactile sensory organs, the potential function of this theropod modification as a unique localizing system is explored in this study.
Method
Dentary surface perforations were examined by surface epi-illumination microscopy in tyrannosaurine and albertosaurine dinosaurs to characterize their anatomy. Fish lateral lines were examined as potentially comparable structures.
Result
In contrast to the subsurface …
Using A Social Ecological Model To Explore Upstream And Downstream Solutions To Rural Food Access For The Elderly, Lauri Andress
Using A Social Ecological Model To Explore Upstream And Downstream Solutions To Rural Food Access For The Elderly, Lauri Andress
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
A social ecological model is applied to the secondary analysis of qualitative data to study the impact of place on rural food access for older adults in West Virginia. The use of a social-ecological model to review the senior’s coded narratives provided a clearer picture of higher impact, upstream levers to address food security for older adults in a rural region. The elderly have restricted access to food in rural West Virginia because of an indirect relationship with place that acts through the social ecological domains of the built environment, macrosocial factors, stressors, the natural environment, and social support. The …

Assessing The Relative Influence And Efficacy Of Public And Private Food Safety Regulation Regimes: Comparing Codex And Global Gap Standards, Sam F. Halabi, Ching-Fu Lin
Faculty Publications
An extensive global system of private food regulation is under construction, one that exceeds conventional regulation, thought of as being driven by public authorities like FDA and USDA in the U.S. or the Food Standards Agency in the UK. Agrifood and grocer organizations, in concert with some farming groups, have been the primary designers of this new food regulatory regime. These groups have established alliances that compete with national regulators in complex ways. This article analyzes the relationship between public and private sources of food safety regulation by examining standards adopted by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, a food safety organization …

Impact Of Garden Participation On Fruit And Vegetable Consumption : A Survey Of Northern Illinois Adults, Jessica Brunner
Impact Of Garden Participation On Fruit And Vegetable Consumption : A Survey Of Northern Illinois Adults, Jessica Brunner
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Adults in the United States are currently consuming too few fruits and vegetables, exercising too infrequently, and have higher body weights than is recommended for health promotion and disease prevention. These behaviors increase the risk for developing and dying from chronic diseases which are the leading killers of Americans today. There is a need for more public health strategies focused on improving health behaviors among U.S. adults. Garden programs have gained attention in recent years for their potential to improve health behaviors among participants. However, few studies have examined the impact of garden participation on health behaviors among adults. In …

Due to lower female incidence, estimates of exogenous and endogenous hormonal factors in head and neck cancers (HNCs, comprising cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx) among women have been inconsistent and unable to account for key HNC risk factors. We pooled data from 11 studies from Europe, North America, and Japan. Analysis included 1572 HNC female cases and 4343 controls. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) estimates and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using multivariate logistic regression models adjusting for tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking. Lower risk was observed in women who used hormone replacement therapy (HRT) …
