Late Adulthood And Meaningful Occupation: The Relationship Between Quality Of Life, Meaningful Activity, And Health, Dwight P. Mangum
MOT Student Capstones
Engagement in meaningful activity is critical to quality of life throughout the lifespan. Participation in such activity can become more challenging at retirement age due to a variety of health concerns and other issues. When an individual's ability to engage in meaningful activity (life roles, leisure activities, activities of daily living, etc.) is diminished due to age related health concerns, injury, or other factors, the resulting barriers to participation in meaningful activity can cause greater damage to quality of life. An understanding of the role that meaningful activity plays in sustaining quality of life is crucial for motivating recovery of …

Background: Maternal exposure to environmental stressors poses a risk to fetal development. Oxidative stress (OS), microglia activation, and inflammation are three tightly linked mechanisms that emerge as a causal factor of neurodevelopmental anomalies associated with prenatal ethanol exposure. Antioxidants such as glutathione (GSH) and CuZnSOD are perturbed, and their manipulation provides evidence for neuroprotection. However, the cellular and molecular effects of GSH alteration in utero on fetal microglia activation and inflammation remain elusive.
Methods: Ethanol (EtOH) (2.5 g/kg) was administered to pregnant mice at gestational days 16–17. One hour prior to ethanol treatment, N-acetylcysteine (NAC) and L-buthionine sulfoximine (BSO) …

Health Workforce Research Center Publications
Community Health Workers (CHWs) have been gaining attention from policymakers because of their unique role in addressing health disparities and socioeconomic drivers of disease, and because of their potential integration into the health care delivery system. To date, there has been limited research specifically describing the variation in CHWs’ roles and relationships, and how that variation relates to management, to financing, to health system integration, and to the competencies CHWs should have in different contexts.
This report provides a snapshot of the varied landscape of CHW programs to better understand how CHWs are integrating with the health system both in …

The last two decades have witnessed many advances in the prevention, treatment, and control of diabetes mellitus and its complications. Increased screening has led to a greater recognition of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (Type 2 DM) and prediabetes; however, Hispanics/Latinos, the largest minority group in the U.S., have not fully benefited from these advances. The Hispanic/Latino population is highly diverse in ancestries, birth places, cultures, languages, and socioeconomic backgrounds, and it populates most of the Western Hemisphere. In the U.S., the prevalence of diabetes mellitus varies among Hispanic/Latino heritage groups, being higher among Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Dominicans, and lower …
Schizophrenia’S Relationship With Cardiovascular Morbidity And Mortality, Hannah Jorgensen
Schizophrenia’S Relationship With Cardiovascular Morbidity And Mortality, Hannah Jorgensen
Theses and Graduate Projects
Premature morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular disease (CVD) disproportionately affects individuals with schizophrenia. This research paper systematically reviews articles that examine the theories and causes of increased CVD risk in individuals with schizophrenia. The findings of the review indicate that there are biological, environmental and sociocultural components of the relationship between schizophrenia and cardiovascular disease. Inflammation from the progression of chronic schizophrenia appears to play a part. The side-effect profile of the medications used to treat schizophrenia cause CVD risk factors. The secondary and tertiary symptoms of the disease process result in problems in motivation, cognitive function and self- …

Section of Orthopaedic Surgery
Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the recommended treatment for end-stage knee osteoarthritis. Considering the various risks associated with intra and postoperative blood transfusions, better understanding is required with respect to the risk factors contributing to a greater possibility of blood transfusion during or after surgery. Although literature highlights several such factors, our study is among the first to identify these risk factors in the South Asian population which differs from other populations in several ways.
Methods: The study consists of a review of 658 patients undergoing TKA from 2005 to 2015. Data was obtained from patient medical records and …

The deposition of terrestrial-derived permafrost particulate organic carbon (POC) has been recorded in major Arctic river deltas. However, associated transport pathways of permafrost POC from the watershed to the coast have not been well constrained. Here we utilized a combination of ramped pyrolysis-oxidation radiocarbon analysis (RPO 14C) along with lignin biomarkers, to track the linkages between soils and river and delta sediments. Surface and deep soils showed distinct RPO thermographs which may be related to degradation and organo-mineral interaction. Soil material in the bed load of the river channel was mostly derived from deep old permafrost. Both surface and …

Large-scale ecosystem disturbances can alter the flow of energy through food webs, but such processes are not well defined for Gulf of Mexico saltmarsh ecosystems vulnerable to multiple interacting stressors. The 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill significantly affected the composition of terrestrial saltmarsh communities in Louisiana, and thus had the potential to alter energy pathways through terrestrial and aquatic food webs, with direct consequences for higher trophic-level species restricted to these habitats. The Seaside Sparrow (Ammodramus maritimus) is endemic to saltmarshes and relies completely on the habitat and resources they provide; thus, the sparrows can serve as indicators of …

Reduced insulin action develops naturally during the peripartum to ensure maternal nutrient delivery to the fetus and neonate. However, increased insulin resistance can facilitate excessive lipolysis which in turn promotes metabolic disease in overweight dairy cattle. Increased fatty acid availability favors the accumulation of the sphingolipid ceramide and is implicated in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance, however, the relationship between sphingolipid metabolism and insulin resistance during the peripartum remains largely unknown. Our objectives were to characterize temporal responses in plasma and tissue sphingolipids in lean and overweight peripartal cows and to establish the relationships between sphingolipid supply and lipolysis, hepatic …

Tawdry Tales: The Psychological Underpinnings Of Corruption And Gifts To Public Officials, Michael J. Paciorek
Tawdry Tales: The Psychological Underpinnings Of Corruption And Gifts To Public Officials, Michael J. Paciorek
Connecticut Law Review
Corruption today often involves the sale of access, positioning the buyer in a prime position to influence governmental decision making. The prosecution of Robert McDonnell, who admitted facilitating the sale of such access for gifts and loans from Jonnie Williams, depended on the definition of "official action." Emphasizing the "quo" of a quid pro quo exchange, the Supreme Court vacated McDonnell's conviction because he did not take an "official action" even though he arranged meetings, encouraged subordinates to act, and hosted a party for the launch of Williams's product at the Governor's mansion. This Note identifies the Court's dramatic shift …

Stronger Together: Embracing Google And Linked Data In Law Libraries, Elizabeth Manriquez
Borgeson Paper Archive
The Marc format ushered in the age of automation for libraries. However, the standard is dated. The Library of Congress began developing BIBFRAME, a linked data ontology, five years ago to supplant the aging standard. It isn’t merely a replacement for MARC but the beginning of a new age of automation. Coupled with improved search engines and the open access movement, linked date can revolutionize the way all libraries do business. This paper provides an overview of linked data technologies, surveys the early results of a linked data initiative, and argues for the adoption of this technology in law libraries.
