Exploring Community-Based Nutrition Education Programs On Children’S Knowledge Of Effective Budgeting And Nutritional Analysis, Danielle Beard, Katie Harris, Charlotte Harrison, Amanda Hawley, Kerri Healy, Ashley Tuttle
Exploring Community-Based Nutrition Education Programs On Children’S Knowledge Of Effective Budgeting And Nutritional Analysis, Danielle Beard, Katie Harris, Charlotte Harrison, Amanda Hawley, Kerri Healy, Ashley Tuttle
OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal
Children from low-income areas, ages 5-18, are at high risk for obesity and other related nutritional issues, partially due to lack of knowledge about effective budgeting and nutritional content analysis. Little information is known about the education provided by current community programs in Hampton Roads for teaching children to 1) shop smart, 2) read nutrition labels, and 3) the importance of eating healthier. We propose a longitudinal (12-week) observational study to determine what community-based education is provided to children on how and why to shop smart and read nutritional content; and to determine whether or not the education is effective. …

OUR Journal: ODU Undergraduate Research Journal
Approximately 9.8 million seniors across America were at risk of going hungry in 2015. The percentage of seniors who faced the threat of hunger was equivalent to the percentage of seniors compared with the whole population of the United States. The prevalence rate of hypertension, which contributes to heart attacks and strokes, is over 50%, and the prevalence rate of diabetes is over 25% in seniors. Both heart disease and diabetes are among the top 10 leading causes of death in America with heart disease being number one. Appropriate dieting is recommended as a way to prevent and treat both …
The Role Of Snap And Habit Formation On Household Consumption Behavior, Shaheer Burney
The Role Of Snap And Habit Formation On Household Consumption Behavior, Shaheer Burney
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
This collection of essays examines the impact of two antecedents of household food consumption: SNAP and habit formation to nutrients. Household food choice invariably plays a substantial role in health outcomes such as obesity. Low-income households may be especially vulnerable to obesity as they face a more restricted set of food choices due to income constraints and may have less information on healthy eating relative to high-income households. This dissertation unravels this dynamic by providing causal estimates of the effect of two major determinants of food choice.
Chapter 2 and chapter 3 test the impact of SNAP participation on consumption …

Compromising The 20s Proteasome Activates A Quality Control Pathway To Mitigate Proteotoxic Stress, Irit Shachrai
Student Theses and Dissertations
The regulation of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) has been the subject of a vast body of work because of its implication in normal development and a wide range of diseases. The UPS controls the degradation of a large number of cellular proteins and thereby regulates essential cellular processes critical for cellular adaptation and more. Amongst the main processes are removal of mis-folded and potentially toxic proteins, cell's loss of protein quality control is often associated with muscle atrophy and neurodegenerative diseases. The proteasome is subject to tight regulation, as many different proteins govern its transcription, assembly, stability and activity. Consequently, …
Density-Dependent Foraging In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Joshua Greene
Density-Dependent Foraging In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Joshua Greene
Student Theses and Dissertations
Game theory has long predicted that the density of competitors and their behaviors should affect foraging, and moreover suggests that multiple strategies can evolve and co-exist within a single species. I show that both of these predictions are met by foraging Caenorhabditis elegans. In Chapter 2, I show that animals alter their foraging behavior in response to population density, that certain pheromones induce this behavioral change, and that different wild isolates vary in response to the potent ascaroside icas#9. I use QTL mapping to find a major locus responsible for this variation, and map it to an icas#9 receptor, srx-43. …

Procedural Due Process And Intramural Hospital Dispute Resolution Mechanisms: The Texas Advance Directives Act, Thaddeus Pope
Faculty Scholarship
Increasingly, clinicians and commentators have been calling for the establishment of special adjudicatory dispute resolution mechanisms to resolve intractable medical futility disputes. As a leading model to follow, policymakers both around the United States and around the world have been looking to the conflict resolution provisions in the 1999 Texas Advance Directives Act (TADA).
In this article, I provide a complete and thorough review of the purpose, history, and operation of TADA. I conclude that TADA is a commendable attempt to balance the competing goals of efficiency and fairness in the resolution of these time-sensitive, life-and-death conflicts. But TADA is …

Biosociocultural Factors And Motivation To Lose Weight Among Obese African American Women, Odette Marie Russell
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity is a pandemic that has a substantial impact among African American women. Biological, social, and cultural acceptance of obesity, collectively referred to as biosociocultural factors, represents an obstacle to efforts to address this health risk among this group. The purpose of this study was to develop a better understanding of the relationship between biosociocultural factors and motivation to lose weight. Self-determination theory, objectification theory, and social learning theory formed the study's theoretical framework. The key research question concerned the extent to which the investigated constructs (BMI, internalized body image, and social networks) helped to explain motivation for weight loss …

Spiritual Leadership: Achieving Positive Health Outcomes In African-American Christian Churches, Cynthia Bracey
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the United States, African-American residents are an underserved population with evidence of higher health disparities than those associated with any other race, contributing to escalating health care costs. Despite the absence of health promotion and wellness training, pastors in predominately Black churches accept the responsibility for addressing more than the spiritual needs of their church members. The purpose of this qualitative grounded theory research study was to explore the perspectives of African-American Christian pastors on giving health guidance and their lived experiences as health promotion advocates. A total of 10 African-American Christian pastors were voluntarily recruited from 3 southern …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity is currently viewed as one of the most important health concerns in the United States. Researchers have minimally investigated perspectives surrounding obesity within the African-American female population. This lack of research presented a gap in knowledge concerning the perceived social, environmental, and cultural influences of obesity within this population. The research questions asked African-American females about their views toward these influences. This research was guided by tenets of the social cognitive theory and the transtheoretical model for behavioral change. Thirteen African-American females participated in the interviews. The data collected were reviewed and coded using word frequencies and themes. Findings …
Association Between Age-Related Macular Degeneration And Sleep-Disordered Breathing, Jeffrey A. Nau
Association Between Age-Related Macular Degeneration And Sleep-Disordered Breathing, Jeffrey A. Nau
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic, irreversible disease that robs individuals of vision, quality of life, and independence. It is the leading cause of blindness in industrialized countries. Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is a condition characterized by repeated episodes of apnea and/or hypopnea, insomnia, short sleep duration, and/or sleep disturbances (snoring, gasping, etc.). Because SDB has been shown to cause chronic hypoxia resulting in oxidative stress on the retina, it has been proposed that SDB may be associated with AMD. Based on the life course theory of chronic disease, this quantitative, cross-sectional study used data from the 2005-2008 National Health …
