A Parasite's Modification Of Host Behavior Reduces Predation On Its Host, John Soghigian, Linda R. Valsdottir, Todd P. Livdahl
Biology
Parasite modification of host behavior is common, and the literature is dominated by demonstrations of enhanced predation on parasitized prey resulting in transmission of parasites to their next host. We present a case in which predation on parasitized prey is reduced. Despite theoretical modeling suggesting that this phenomenon should be common, it has been reported in only a few host–parasite–predator systems. Using a system of gregarine endosymbionts in host mosquitoes, we designed experiments to compare the vulnerability of parasitized and unparasitized mosquito larvae to predation by obligate predatory mosquito larvae and then compared behavioral features known to change in the …

The prevalence of peanut allergies (PAs) continues to rise through recent decades, despite the best attempts to reverse that trend. PAs are unpredictable and can be life-threatening. Therefore, it is imperative that nurse practitioners (NPs) are fully aware of the most recent guidelines and evidence regarding diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of PAs. This article presents information on current research in diagnosis and treatment of PA, as well as the latest guidelines established to prevent PA development. NPs should understand this information, allowing them to provide the best care possible for their patients.

Humans consider themselves discrete autonomous organisms, but recent research is rapidly strengthening the appreciation that associated microorganisms make essential contributions to human health and well being. Each person is inhabited and also surrounded by his/her own signature microbial cloud. A low diversity of microorganisms is associated with a plethora of diseases, including allergy, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, inflammatory bowel diseases, and even neuropsychiatric disorders. Thus, an interaction of microorganisms with the host immune system is required for a healthy body. Exposure to microorganisms from the moment we are born and appropriate microbiome assembly during childhood are essential for establishing an active …

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) patients have elevated plasma saturated free fatty acid levels. These toxic fatty acids can induce liver cell death and our recent results demonstrated that the biliary epithelium may be susceptible to lipotoxicity. Here, we explored the molecular mechanisms of cholangiocyte lipoapoptosis in cell culture and in an animal model of NASH. Treatment of cholangiocytes with palmitate (PA) showed increased caspase 3/7 activity and increased levels of cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase and cleaved caspase 3, demonstrating cholangiocyte lipoapoptosis. Interestingly, treatment with PA significantly increased the levels of microRNA miR-34a, a pro-apoptotic microRNA known to be elevated in NASH. …

INTRODUCTION: Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) plays a relevant role, mainly in the Northeast region of Brazil, where it is an alternative source of income and food source for the population, which consumes it in the form of mature or green grains, decreasing dependence on common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). The dry grains have nutritional value similar to common bean, containing approximately 63% of carbohydrates, 25% of protein and 6% of fibers (AZEVEDO et al, 2003). Grain consumption contributes synergistically to its medicinal properties as antioxidant, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, antitumor and antimicrobial, with a positive effect against some chronic diseases …

INTRODUCTION Over more than 100 years agricultural scientists all over the world have developed high yielding crop varieties to meet the energy demand of increasing population. However the nutritional qualities have not been given priorities as a result world is facing with serious malnutrition problem. Two of the most prominent deficiencies affecting the world are of iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn). Among others Fe is vital in building proteins of red blood cells, whereas Zn is essential in cellular growth and development. Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation, histone modification, and small interfering RNA (sRNA) regulate the transcription of DNA …

INTRODUCTION Dry edible beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) provide an economical, nutritious food source for millions of people around the world and are grown in a diverse variety of sizes, colors, shapes, and agronomic traits. In the United States, dry beans are commonly consumed as readyto- eat canned products, which makes canning quality important to industry standards and consumer preferences. When black beans are processed for canning, they dramatically lose their dark coloration, which results in an undesirable, faded-brown, canned product. Although phenotyping is time and labor-intensive, genotypes with superior color retention have been identified that can enable genetic improvement …

Federal prosecutors have several tools at their disposal to bring criminal charges against state and local officials for their engagement in corrupt activity. Section 666 federal funds bribery and § 1951 Hobbs Act extortion, two such statuary tools, have coexisted for the past thirty-six years, during which time § 666 has seen an increasing share of total prosecutions while the Hobbs Act’s share of prosecutions has fallen commensurately. In the summer of 2016, the U.S. Supreme Court decided McDonnell v. United States—a decision that threatens to quicken the demise of Hobbs Act extortion in favor of § 666. If …

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether measures of exercise adherence were related to clinical outcome measures and indices of vascular health subsequent to a 6-month AEXT intervention in a middle-to-older aged African American cohort. Following dietary stabilization, sedentary, apparently healthy, African American …
Information Literacy Competencies Of Registered Nurses At Magnet Hospitals, Kimberly Dawn Belcik
Information Literacy Competencies Of Registered Nurses At Magnet Hospitals, Kimberly Dawn Belcik
Dissertations
More patients are turning to the Internet as as source of health information. Nurses occupy the frontline of healthcare and must have information literacy (IL) competencies to guide themselves and their patients to the correct and appropriate health information on the Internet. Within magnet hospitals, which are exemplars for excellent nursing practice, there is an increased emphasis on evidence based practice and research, which requires IL. Exploring IL at magnet hospitals was reasonable considering such competence is promoted. Previous research indicates that nurses lack IL competencies which are necessary to inform their patients and impact healthcare but many studies rely …

BACKGROUND: Acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) is a leading cause of hospitalization in older persons in the United States. Reduced physical function and frailty are major determinants of adverse outcomes in older patients with hospitalized ADHF. However, these are not addressed by current heart failure (HF) management strategies and there has been little study of exercise training in older, frail HF patients with recent ADHF.
HYPOTHESIS: Targeting physical frailty with a multi-domain structured physical rehabilitation intervention will improve physical function and reduce adverse outcomes among older patients experiencing a HF hospitalization.
STUDY DESIGN: REHAB-HF is a multi-center clinical trial in …

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and salps are major macroplankton contributors to Southern Ocean food webs and krill are also fished commercially. Managing this fishery sustainably, against a backdrop of rapid regional climate change, requires information on distribution and time trends. Many data on the abundance of both taxa have been obtained from net sampling surveys since 1926, but much of this is stored in national archives, sometimes only in notebooks. In order to make these important data accessible we have collated available abundance data (numerical density, no. m−2 ) of postlarval E. superba and salp individual (multiple …
