Poverty In The Land Of Plenty? Deconstructing Role Of Community-Based Organizations In A Small Community, John Kevin Trainor
Poverty In The Land Of Plenty? Deconstructing Role Of Community-Based Organizations In A Small Community, John Kevin Trainor
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Using the lens of a community-based childhood obesity intervention, it is possible to examine the role of non-profit organizations in community development and to deconstruct the “community” in community-based research and identify the many competing interests within a community. This contextual understanding includes how the community is formed, how a community’s agenda is set, and who will complete the tasks outlined in that agenda. In applied anthropological settings and public health interventions that are community-based, it is essential to understand the context of community and which community (or communities) the researcher is working with to ensure that the data you …

Analysis Of The Anti-Cancer Effects Of Cincau Extract (Premna Oblongifolia Merr) And Other Types Of Non- Digestible Fibre Using Faecal Fermentation Supernatants And Caco-2 Cells As A Model Of The Human Colon, Samsu U. Nurdin, Richard K. Le Leu, Graeme P. Young, James Constantine R. Stangoulis, Claus T. Christophersen, Catherine A. Abbott
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Green cincau (Premna oblongifolia Merr) is an Indonesian food plant with a high dietary fibre content. Research has shown that dietary fibre mixtures may be more beneficial for colorectal cancer prevention than a single dietary fibre type. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of green cincau extract on short chain fatty acid (SCFA) production in anaerobic batch cultures inoculated with human faecal slurries and to compare these to results obtained using different dietary fibre types (pectin, inulin, and cellulose), singly and in combination. Furthermore, fermentation supernatants (FSs) were evaluated in Caco-2 cells for their effect on …
Corporations And Human Life, Frank Partnoy
Corporations And Human Life, Frank Partnoy
Seattle University Law Review
In Part I, I address decision-making. How should risk to human life be included in the jurisprudence of corporate decision-making? In terms of finance, how should corporations make net present value decisions when risk to human life is a factor? In terms of law, is there a case for exceptions to the business judgment rule based on risk to human life? Second, in Part II, I address oversight. How should risk to human life be included in the jurisprudence of oversight? In terms of finance, how should corporations approach risk management when human life is a factor? In terms of …
The Recent Enactment Of National Mandatory Gmo Labeling Law: Superior To A Voluntary Labeling Scheme But Unlikely To End The Labeling Controversy, Nan Feng
Seattle University Law Review
Part I of this Note provides background information about the major controversies related to GM foods, including the debate about whether such foods should be labeled, and the history of GMO labeling laws in the United States. Part II compares S. 764 with H.R. 1599 and explains why a national mandatory labeling approach is superior to the voluntary labeling approach advocated by the House. Part III discusses the potential drawbacks and effect of S. 764 and finally concludes that the rulemaking process that will follow may create controversies and litigation.
Birth Weight As Destiny? How Parental Investment Reinforces The Birth Weight Educational Gap, Leah Gillion
Birth Weight As Destiny? How Parental Investment Reinforces The Birth Weight Educational Gap, Leah Gillion
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Through numerous studies, scholars have come to view birth weight as having a lasting impact on educational outcomes. Normal birth weight is associated with greater educational attainment; however, much of the literature ignores the role of parental investment. Using data from the Fragile Families Child Well-Being Study, it was found that birth endowments alone do not produce varying levels of cognitive development, but these birth endowments do lead parents to make different choices for their children, choices that potentially exacerbate the educational divide. Children with normal birth weight receive more parental investment from birth to age 3 than children with …
The Development Of Step Up To Quality: What It Means For Families, Patricia A. Drewes-Hynek
The Development Of Step Up To Quality: What It Means For Families, Patricia A. Drewes-Hynek
Student Work
In June 2013 the Nebraska legislature signed into being LB507, also known as the Step Up to Quality Act. Designed to answer the need for quality early childhood care and experiences across the state of Nebraska, Step Up to Quality is Nebraska’s Quality Rating and Improvement System. Years in the making, Step Up to Quality aims to provide accountability for child care programs receiving state child care subsidy returns, increase family access to early childhood experiences through lowering of the income requirement levels to receive child care subsidy, and to provide an objective rating system for child care providers that …

Dna Barcoding Analysis Of Seafood Accuracy In Washington, D.C. Restaurants, David Stern, Eduardo Castro Nallar, Jason Rathod, Keith A. Crandall
Dna Barcoding Analysis Of Seafood Accuracy In Washington, D.C. Restaurants, David Stern, Eduardo Castro Nallar, Jason Rathod, Keith A. Crandall
Computational Biology Institute
In Washington D.C., recent legislation authorizes citizens to test if products are properly represented and, if they are not, to bring a lawsuit for the benefit of the general public. Recent studies revealing the widespread phenomenon of seafood substitution across the United States make it a fertile area for consumer protection testing. DNA barcoding provides an accurate and cost-effective way to perform these tests, especially when tissue alone is available making species identification based on morphology impossible. In this study, we sequenced the 5′ barcoding region of the Cytochrome Oxidase I gene for 12 samples of vertebrate and invertebrate food …

Maternal Autonomy And Child Health Care Utilization: Evidence From Bangladesh, Ashiqul Alam
Maternal Autonomy And Child Health Care Utilization: Evidence From Bangladesh, Ashiqul Alam
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2017
My research looked into the relationship between maternal autonomy and how child health care is utilized in third world countries. I worked with my professor, Dr. Bibhudutta Panda, to specifically look at Bangladesh as our country of interest. The country itself is smaller than Florida but is ranked number 8 for the most populated country. In Bangladesh the infant mortality rate is 6 times more than the US, at 30.7 per 1000 live births and government expenditure is also low. The main reason behind to pick Bangladesh is also that it is a third world country and also a patriarchal …

Mitochondria Initiate And Regulate Sarcopenia, Stephen E. Alway, Junaith S. Mohamed, Matthew J. Myers
Mitochondria Initiate And Regulate Sarcopenia, Stephen E. Alway, Junaith S. Mohamed, Matthew J. Myers
Clinical and Translational Science Institute
We present the hypothesis that an accumulation of dysfunctional mitochondria initiates a signaling cascade leading to motor neuron and muscle fiber death and culminating in sarcopenia. Interactions between neural and muscle cells that contain dysfunctional mitochondria exacerbate sarcopenia. Preventing sarcopenia will require identifying mitochondrial sources of dysfunction that are reversible.

Objectives—To characterize psychotropic medication use before and after traumatic brain injury (TBI) hospitalization among older adults. A secondary objective is to determine how receipt of indicated pharmacologic treatment for anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) differs following TBI. Design—Retrospective cohort Setting—United States Participants—Medicare beneficiaries age ≥65 hospitalized with TBI 2006-2010 with continuous drug coverage for 12 months before and after TBI (n=60,276). Measurements—We obtained monthly psychotropic medication use by drug class and specific drugs from Medicare Part D drug event files. International Classification of Disease, 9th Edition CM, codes were used to define anxiety (300.0x) and PTSD (309.81). Results—Average monthly …

Innate Food Preference In The Larval Tobacco Hornworm, Manduca Sexta, Michael Morrison
Innate Food Preference In The Larval Tobacco Hornworm, Manduca Sexta, Michael Morrison
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
Food preference can drive an organism to seek a specific food source even if another food, which can provide needed nutrition, is easier to obtain. Food preference can develop in different ways, including innate preference, i.e., organisms display food preference at birth, or learned preference, i.e., organisms develop food preference after previous experience with that food. The tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta, shows learned preference; however, we lack information about innate food preference in Manduca. Manduca sexta larvae eat many different foods until they feed on a solanaceous plant, when they become more specific in their diet. This study focused on …
