Vasopressin And Oxytocin Reduce Food Sharing Behavior In Male, But Not Female Marmosets In Family Groups, Jack H. Taylor, Allison A. Intorre, Jeffrey A. French
Psychology Faculty Publications
Oxytocin (OT) is critical for lactation and maternal care, but OT and the related nonapeptide vasopressin are important for caregiving behaviors in fathers and alloparents as well. This experiment tested the effects of vasopressin and OT on food sharing in marmoset families. We treated caregivers (parents, siblings) with intranasal vasopressin, OT, or saline, and then paired them with the youngest marmoset in the family. Caregivers were given preferred food, and then observed for food sharing and aggressive behavior with young marmosets. OT reduced food sharing from male alloparents to youngest siblings, and fathers that received vasopressin refused to share food …

Understanding The Role Of Patient And Public Involvement In Renal Dietetic Research, Andrew Morris Mr, Deborah Biggerstaff, Nithya Krishnan, Deborah Lycett
Patient Experience Journal
The objective was to consult patients on a proposed recruitment strategy to a patient and public involvement exercise. We wanted to explore the reasoning and willingness of patients to become co-researchers within a grant application. Eighteen people using the renal health service informed the consultation by action research so that their experiences could be used to guide the overall methodology. Twelve people took part in semi-structured interviews. NVIVO 10 and Framework Analysis were used to interpret emerging themes from the data. The recruitment strategy, informed by research expertise, became an experience-based expert design. The design took into account the limitations …

Introduction: Osteopontin (OPN) polymorphisms are associated with muscle size and modify disease progression in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). We hypothesized that OPN may share a molecular network with myostatin (MSTN).
Methods: Studies were conducted in the golden retriever (GRMD) and mdx mouse models of DMD. Follow-up in-vitro studies were employed in myogenic cells and the mdx mouse treated with recombinant mouse (rm) or human (Hu) OPN protein.
Results: OPN was increased and MSTN was decreased and levels correlated inversely in GRMD hypertrophied muscle. RM-OPN treatment led to induced AKT1 and FoxO1 phosphorylation, microRNA-486 modulation, and decreased MSTN. An AKT1 inhibitor …

Background: Although the scientific community has acknowledged modest improvements can be made to weight status and obesogenic behaviors (i.e., physical activity, sedentary/screen time, diet, and sleep) during the school year, studies suggests improvements are erased as elementary-age children are released to summer vacation. Emerging evidence shows children return to school after summer vacation displaying accelerated weight gain compared to the weight gained occurring during the school year. Understanding how summer days differ from when children are in school is, therefore, essential.
Discussion: There is limited evidence on the etiology of accelerated weight gain during summer, with few studies comparing obesogenic …

Disentangling Sources Of Variation In Ssu Rdna Sequences From Single Cell Analyses Of Ciliates: Impact Of Copy Number Variation And Experimental Error, Chundi Wang, Tengteng Zhang, Yurui Wang, Laura A. Katz, Feng Gao, Weibo Song
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) is widely used for phylogenetic inference, barcoding and other taxonomy-based analyses. Recent studies indicate that SSU rDNA of ciliates may have a high level of sequence variation within a single cell, which impacts the interpretation of rDNA-based surveys. However, sequence variation can come from a variety of sources including experimental errors, especially the mutations generated by DNA polymerase in PCR. In the present study, we explore the impact of four DNA polymerases on sequence variation and find that low-fidelity polymerases exaggerate the estimates of single-cell sequence variation. Therefore, using a polymerase with high fidelity …

This Thesis is a study into possible outcomes on products from recent trends in business culture, virtual and physical tools, and marketing and sales.
We will first look at our changing economic and political systems. The situations provide insight into the way goods are produced, by whom they are produced, and the general mood of consumers insights. From there we will consider how changing tools and strategies may lead to similar changes in how we design. And finally we will consider research in customer choice in a world of abundance.
My own explorations into different product sets will attempt to …

Improving The Pharmacologic Management Of Patients After Osteoporotic Hip Fractures, Joseph Klaus, Milad Modarresi, Rodrigo Aguilar, Nasreen Benhamed, Franklin D. Shuler
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Abstract
Background
Osteoporotic hip fractures have become an increasingly common healthcare burden with significant morbidity and mortality in the geriatric population. Pharmacological management of the underlying osteoporosis is critical. Our objective is to determine the percentage of patients older than 65 who receive pharmacologic treatment of osteoporosis within six months after a fragility fracture at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
Methods
Data was extracted from medical records for patients age 65 or older who sustained a hip fracture during June 2013 - March 2015. Patients who received any form of pharmacologic treatment within six months after their fractures were identified. All analyses …

Optimizing Heart Failure Outcomes Through Diet: A Review, Farley B. Neasman Iii
Marshall Journal of Medicine
Heart failure is a growing epidemic that will add significant monetary and human costs to an already overtaxed health-care system. Though promising new medications have recently been approved, this complex condition is largely preventable through aggressive risk factor modification, with diet being shown to have a greater effect than exercise. An underrated component of a healthy diet is the simple addition of nuts – the anti-inflammatory fatty acids, healthy proteins, and general availability have been shown to improve survival and reduce the primary risk factors contributing to heart failure, making the addition of nuts and legumes to the diet an …
