Cultural Self-Identification Among Extension Educators' And Cultural Competence In Cooperative Extension, Ruddy Y. Benavides
Cultural Self-Identification Among Extension Educators' And Cultural Competence In Cooperative Extension, Ruddy Y. Benavides
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
As immigration and globalization are increasing, the number of people in our country who speak more than one language is also increasing (Center for Public Education, 2012). These trends are creating needs for culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students and families in schools, specifically, the need for culturally responsive pedagogy and culturally competent teachers. In addition to formal educational contexts, non-formal educational contexts such as Cooperative Extension need to adapt to cultural changes as well. The purpose of this study was to explore the personal beliefs and professional experiences of present Extension Educators (EEs), and the techniques they practice in …

Optimization Of Deproteinization Technology On Chondroitin Sulfate With Sevag Method, Xu Suwen, Tan An, Jin Chenzhong, Hu Yihong
Food and Machinery
In order to promote the quality of chondroitin sulfate, Sevag reagent was used to deprotein the extraction of chondroitin sulfate through the single factor and the orthogonal tests to optimize the process of deproteinization. The optimal conditions were ratio of chloroform to isoamyl alcohol 21 (V/V), Sevag reagent dosage 1/2 fold compared with the volume of chondroitin sulfate extraction, treated for 25 min and repeated treatment for 3 times. The factors influenced the extraction in the order of ratio of chloroform to isoamyl alchohol, treatment time , treatment times, and Sevag reagent dosage. Under the optimal conditions, the retention rate of …

Inhibitory Effects Of L-Theanine On Α-Amylase And Trypsin, Yuan Dongyin, Long Jun, Gong Zhihua, Lin Ling, Zhou Yang, Peng Yingqi, Xiao Wenjun
Food and Machinery
The inhibitory effects of L-theanine on the activities of α-amylase and trypsin were studied by establishing the best reaction system and adopting research method on graph in order to provide reference for the deep development of L-theanine. The results showed that the inhibitory effects of L-theanine on both enzyme activities were positively associated with its concentration. IC50 (26.078 mg/mL) of L-theanine on the activities of α-amylase was achieved by prewarming enzyme at a concentration of 0.018 mg/mL in the presence of L-theanine at 37 ℃ for 5 min before addition of 1% starch and allowing reaction to proceed for …
Evidence Of Language Prerequisites In Pan: Orofacial-Motor And Breath Control In Chimpanzees And Bonobos, Natalie Schwob
Evidence Of Language Prerequisites In Pan: Orofacial-Motor And Breath Control In Chimpanzees And Bonobos, Natalie Schwob
Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses
Human spoken language requires the concomitant utilization of numerous cognitive and motor skills. Two particularly relevant skills are orofacial-motor control (OFM), the ability to purposefully move one’s facial muscles, and breath control (BC), subglottal air pressure that fuels sound production, as both are necessary in the voluntary production of speech. Many have claimed these competencies are uniquely human qualities without great ape antecedents. However, here we describe both skills in genus Pan, which contains our closest extant relatives: chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and bonobos (Pan paniscus). We hypothesized that OFM and BC would be present in both species of Pan and …
Controlling Enterohemorrhagic E. Coli O157: H7 Using Selenium And Rutin, Meera Surendran Nair
Controlling Enterohemorrhagic E. Coli O157: H7 Using Selenium And Rutin, Meera Surendran Nair
Doctoral Dissertations
Enterohemorrhagic E.coli O157: H7 (EHEC) has emerged as one of the leading causes of food borne illness and pediatric diarrheal disease in the United States. The EHEC associated life-threatening hemolytic uremic syndrome in human patients is linked to the expression of several virulence factors of the pathogen, especially verotoxins. Verotoxins (VT) or shiga like toxins (Stx) are the major virulence factors elaborated by EHEC. Even after 30 years of research on EHEC epidemiology and pathogenesis, little advancement has been made in disease prevention and treatment against the bacterium. One of the main limitations in treating EHEC infection is the contraindicated …
Diet Specialization Does Not Explain Occupancy Or Abundance In A Test Of The Resource Breadth Hypothesis In A Small Mammal Community, Deborah R. Boro
Diet Specialization Does Not Explain Occupancy Or Abundance In A Test Of The Resource Breadth Hypothesis In A Small Mammal Community, Deborah R. Boro
Biology ETDs
The abundance-occupancy relationship (AOR) is a recurrent pattern in ecology and biogeography, in which species with expansive distributions are locally common while those with restricted distributions are locally rare. Despite occurring across a wide variety of taxa and spatial scales, the mechanisms underlying AORs are not well understood. I tested two such mechanisms regarding dietary generalism in a guild of 8 small, herbivorous African mammals: (1) the degree to which diet was explained by food availability, and (2) population-level diet breadth. I expected that food availability would better predict diet for abundant, widespread species than rare, restricted species. Additionally, I …
What You Know Makes A Difference: Physical Activity Maintenance And Adherence Of Collegiate Students, Vista Beasley, Brooke Thompson, Patrick R. Young, Itay Basevitch
What You Know Makes A Difference: Physical Activity Maintenance And Adherence Of Collegiate Students, Vista Beasley, Brooke Thompson, Patrick R. Young, Itay Basevitch
Journal of Counseling and Psychology
For decades, exercise psychology researchers dismissed health/exercise knowledge as a determinant of physical activity (PA). We sought to overturn this misconception, showing that psychological theory may serve as a basis for informing physical education curriculum. Based on social cognitive and self-determined motivation theories, we examined health/exercise knowledge as a determinant of collegiate students’ PA maintenance (i.e., ≥ 6 months of regular PA involvement); adherence to United States Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS) 2008 PA guidelines; and PA types (i.e., aerobic, weight training). Collegiate students (n = 231) provided data via online survey. ANOVA analyses revealed that knowledge …

Assessing Actions And Feelings Related To Multidimensional Well-Being: Validation Of The I Coppe Actions And Feelings Scales, Carolyn L. Rubenstein
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to validate two new scales on actions and feelings for well-being in key areas of life. The I COPPE Actions Scale and the I COPPE Feelings Scale measure Interpersonal, Community, Occupational, Physical, Psychological, and Economic (I COPPE) well-being. A total of 478 University of Miami employees provided online responses to the I COPPE Actions and Feelings Scales. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine the a priori hypothesized correlated six-factor structure for responses to the I COPPE Actions and Feelings Scales. Multiple group confirmatory factor analysis was used to evaluate measurement invariance across gender …
Group A Strep (Gas), Kimberly Hyatt
Group A Strep (Gas), Kimberly Hyatt
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Abstract
Group A Streptococcal (GAS) bacteria is a common but potent pathogen. GAS is the most common cause of pharyngitis in the world and can be easily treated with the right antibiotic. Left untreated or undertreated, however, GAS is the ninth leading cause of infectious disease mortality, worldwide. Lethality from a GAS infection is 10-30%. The virulence factors of GAS are responsible for the short and long term havoc it wreaks on an individual, and the incredible disease burden of 18.1 million severe cases of GAS, annually, around the globe. In the U.S., each year, GAS pharyngitis, alone, costs $500 …
Differential Use Of Two Warm-Water Effluents By The Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) And Temporal Distributions Throughout Broward County, Florida, Laura F. Eldredge
Differential Use Of Two Warm-Water Effluents By The Florida Manatee (Trichechus Manatus Latirostris) And Temporal Distributions Throughout Broward County, Florida, Laura F. Eldredge
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
The threatened Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) migrates seasonally to warm-water refugia throughout the state of Florida due to metabolic requirements from low thermal conductance. Broward County’s two power plant refugia, Port Everglades (PEP) and Lauderdale (LPP), are known heavily-utilized aggregation sites for the Atlantic sub-population. Broward County collected relative abundance counts via aerial surveys from 2004–2013 siting 31,418 manatees during 169 surveys within 18 defined waterway zones. Counts during manatee wintering seasons were significantly different from January 2005-March 2008 and November 2008-March 2013, likely related to flight path and frequency standardization. Mean percentage of adults (90.12%) to …
