Distribution Of Common Raccoons And Coyotes During Quail Nesting Season, Susan M. Cooper, Dale Rollins, Shesh Jhala
Distribution Of Common Raccoons And Coyotes During Quail Nesting Season, Susan M. Cooper, Dale Rollins, Shesh Jhala
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Mammalian predation of quail and their eggs is a problem to many producers of quail particularly considering that abundance of common meso-predators, such as coyotes (Canis latrans) and common raccoons (Procyon lotor), is increasing. Predator removal programs are often not cost effective in increasing quail numbers but habitat management may be appropriate. There is a need for detailed knowledge of the habitat preferences and foraging patterns of these predators so producers of quail may limit predation of quail through management decisions and habitat manipulation. We placed GPS collars on 5 coyotes and 11 raccoons at Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch, …

Invertebrate Abundance At Northern Bobwhite Brood Locations In The Rolling Plains Of Texas, Thomas L. Warren, Sean R. Yancey, C. Brad Dabbert
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus), a bird of significant ecological and economic importance throughout the Rolling Plains region of Texas, has experienced significant population declines. Bobwhites have been the focus of extensive research for decades but little is known about foraging ecology of adults and chicks during post-hatch. Invertebrates are a key summer diet component for chicks, and supply the necessary proteins and minerals needed to fuel rapid body development. We examined brood-foraging sites to investigate invertebrate abundance. We radiomarked 121 bobwhite hens during winter-spring 2008 and 2009 and subsequently monitored 14 broods post-hatch. We collected invertebrate samples from 34 brood …

Arthropod Consumption By Northern Bobwhite Chicks In Managed Tall Fescue Monocultures, Douglas C. Osborne, Donald W. Sparling, Thomas V. Dailey
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
An extensive amount of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) habitat for northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) has been lost to planting of tall fescue (Schedonorus phoenix). We conducted foraging trials using human-imprinted bobwhite chicks (n 1⁄4 288) and collected terrestrial arthropods using a customized yard vacuum to assess the effects of 3 USDA mid-contract management (MCM) cost-share practices on chick foraging rates and arthropod prey selection in 36 tall fescue-dominated CRP fields in Illinois during 2008. We applied fall strip disking, fall glyphosate spraying, and fall glyphosate spraying followed by spring legume interseeding in alternating strips to 33% of each treatment field …

Effects Of Carbohydrate-Based And Protein-Carbohydrate Rations On Wild Bobwhite Nesting And Harvest Demographics, Andrew N. Tri, Fidel Hernandez, David G. Hewitt, William P. Kuvlesky Jr., Leonard A. Brennan
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) reproduction is a nutrient-intensive process. Arthropods are essential for breeding bobwhite hens and their offspring. Traditional supplemental feeding programs use corn and milo and typically neglect the protein needs of bobwhites. Commercial bobwhite rations are widely available but are seldom used in feeding programs due to high cost and lack of an appropriate supplement for field use. We compared the effect of a protein-carbohydrate ration (PC) to the effects of a carbohydrate only ration (CO) on: (1) bobwhite hen nesting demographics (clutch size, ordinal clutch initiation date, Mayfield nest survival), and (2) fall relative abundance (coveys …

Preference And Nutrition Of Quail Breeder 16, Common Agricultural Feeds, And A Mix Of Native Seeds As Northern Bobwhite Food, Jonathan A. Larson, Timothy E. Fulbright, Leonard A. Brennan, Fidel Hernandez, Fred C. Bryant
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Agricultural feeds are commonly dispersed along roads or in openings as an attractant or dietary supplement for northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus). Quail Breeder 16e is a pelletized ration specifically developed by Lyssy & Eckel Feeds for breeding bobwhites to maximize nutritive content of diets. Captive bobwhites were used to examine relative preference of the pellets, sorghum, corn, soybean, and a mix of seeds of 8 native plant species. Protein, fat, acid detergent fiber, gross energy, and mineral content of the feeds were measured and we examined changes in body mass of bobwhites fed exclusive diets of each of the five …

Effects Of Two Commercial Game Bird Feeds On Captive Northern Bobwhite Chick Growth Rates, Andrew N. Tri, Fidel Hernandez, David G. Hewitt, William P. Kuvlesky Jr.
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Supplemental feeding of northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) is a widespread management practice. Bobwhite chicks in the wild consume only arthropods for their first 30–60 days of life. Arthropods may become less abundant and managers have supplied bobwhites with supplemental feed during times of drought to mitigate the lack of arthropods. We compared growth rates of captive bobwhite chicks consuming a new, commercial 24% crude protein supplement to growth rates of bobwhites consuming a commercial 30% crude protein complete ration. There was no male/female bias related to chick growth. Chicks consuming the 24% protein diet grew slower and reached adult mass …

Fecundity Of Wild Northern Bobwhite Hens Under Hatchery Conditions, John T. Baccus, Kevin W. Dees, Michael F. Small, Thomas R. Simpson
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
We describe egg production by 88 pairs of randomly selected, mature, wild-caught northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) hens housed under optimal conditions of food, water, climate, and a 17-hr photoperiod in a hatchery. We collected eggs daily using an 18-day period to differentiate between clutches. Hens continuously laid eggs until ceasing production. We evaluated number of eggs laid by each hen individually and hens collectively including total number, number/clutch, number/day, hatching success, and egg mass. Eighty-six hens produced 5,888 eggs. Number of eggs produced by individual hens ranged from 0 to 172 over ~ 200 days. Mean number of eggs laid/hen/day …
Total Body Electrical Conductivity For Determining Carcass Fat In Ruffed Grouse, Aaron B. Proctor, John W. Edwards
Total Body Electrical Conductivity For Determining Carcass Fat In Ruffed Grouse, Aaron B. Proctor, John W. Edwards
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Percent carcass fat is often considered a primary condition indice in game bird species. Although regarded as the standard for determining fat reserves, traditional sampling methods require sacrificing animals for chemical analysis via fat extraction. Lethal methods negate the ability to track condition of individuals through time. Avian physiology studies often require the assessment of conditional changes through time and among various treatments, which necessitate the use of a non-lethal method for estimating fat levels. We were able to accurately estimate fat condition in captive ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) utilizing total body electrical conductivity (TOBEC). We developed predictive models to …

Effect Of Supplemental Feeding On Winter Diet And Body Mass Of Northern Bobwhites, Ryan E. Whitelaw, William E. Palmer, Shane D. Wellendorf, John P. Carroll
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Supplemental feeding by spreading grain is a common management practice on private lands managed for northern bobwhites (Colinus viginianus), but its effect on diet of bobwhites is not well documented. We examined crop contents from 160 northern bobwhites collected in January and February of 2002 and 2003 from Tall Timbers Research Station, Tallahassee, FL, and Pebble Hill Plantation, Thomasville, GA. Sorghum seed (Sorghum vulgare) was spread bi-weekly on approximately half of each study area along a dedicated feed trail through the cover. Dry mass of crop contents from harvested bobwhites averaged 2.51g (SE = 0.171) and was composed primarily of …

Winter Food Habits And Preferences Of Northern Bobwhites In East Texas, Donald R. Dietz Jr., R. Montague Whiting Jr., Nancy E. Koerth
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
During late winter, 1994 and 1995, we investigated food habits and preferences of northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus; hereafter, bobwhites) collected on forested lands in east Texas. Crops for bobwhites were collected from areas under 3 management regimes, namely intensively managed for bobwhites (QMA) (i.e., tree basal area reduced, annually burned, numerous multi-stage food plots, etc.), extensively managed for timber and wildlife (NBS) (i.e., burned every 3-5 years, scattered 2-stage food plots with corn feeders), and unmanaged for wildlife (i.e., burned every 5-7 years). With years pooled, partridge pea (Cassia fasciculata), Hercules club (Zanthoxylum clava-herculis), and pine (Pinus spp.) seeds, and …

The Effect Of Quail Feeders On Northern Bobwhite Density In Western Oklahoma, Stephen J. Demaso, Darrell Townsend Ii, Scott A. Cox, Edward S. Parry, Robert L. Lochmiller
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
We investigated the effect of quail feeders on northern bobwhite (Colinu s virginianus) covey size and density from I October 1991 to 1 October 1996 on the Packsaddle Wildlife Management Area (WMA ) in western Oklahoma. Thirty-two quail feeders tilled with milo were located near the center of every 8. 1 ha on a 283.3-ha treatment area. An adjacent 283.3-ha control area contained no quail feeders. Line-transect methodology was used to seasonally determine covey size and density on each area. Transects were traversed on horseback during October and March of each year. Mean fall covey size was similar (t = …
Effects Of Supplemental Feeding On Northern Bobwhite Populations In South Texas, Ted B. Doerr, Nova J. Silvy
Effects Of Supplemental Feeding On Northern Bobwhite Populations In South Texas, Ted B. Doerr, Nova J. Silvy
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
During 1985–87, the effects of supplemental feeding on northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations were studied on 4 paired sites, representing a cross-section of soils, vegetation, and hunting pressure in south Texas. Whole milo was provided from late fall–March. Feeding increased winter survival of birds on deep sand sites (225–245%), but not on red sandy loam or clay sites. Feeding did not improve reproductive success on any of the study sites. Most birds collected had milo in their crops and there was a tendency to find birds close to feeders more often than at random points. The study demonstrated that supplemental …

Relationship Among Plasma Tiglycerides, Body Mass, Reproduction Of Northern Bobwhites, J. M. Mueller, C. B. Dabbert
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
The earliest potential initiation of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) reproduction is limited by photoperiod. Secondary factors such as lipid reserves, diet, and stress often limit the beginning of northern bobwhite reproduction, potentially reducing reproductive success and causing a shorter reproductive season. We measured late winter body masses and plasma triglycerides of wild northern bobwhites and subsequent reproductive timing and effort in 1997 and 1998 on the coastal prairie of Texas. Using body mass and plasma triglyceride levels as indices of body fat, we tested the hypothesis that the onset of reproduction and first clutch size was influenced by late winter …
Characteristics Of Four Agricultural Crops Established As Northern Bobwhite Brood Habitat, Denise A. Maidens, John P. Carroll
Characteristics Of Four Agricultural Crops Established As Northern Bobwhite Brood Habitat, Denise A. Maidens, John P. Carroll
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Small plots of agricultural crops are often planted in the Southeast for northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) management. Often these are viewed as primarily winter habitat, and assumed to provide summer habitat. We evaluated the macroinvertebrate and vegetative structure of millet, sorghum, wheat, and soybean plots on a cotton farm to assess their value as bobwhite brood habitat. During June and July 1999 and June, July, and August 2000, we studied 5 blocks, each planted with all 4 agricultural crops. We measured invertebrate abundance along a 15-meter transect in each plot using vacuum sampling and height/density of vegetation. Visual obstruction readings …

The Impact Of Invasive Exotic Grasses On Quail In The Southwestern United States, William P. Kuvlesky Jr., Timothy E. Fulbright, Ron Engel-Wilson
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Five native quail species inhabit arid and semi-arid ecosystems in the southwestern United States. One species is endangered, one species is declining throughout it’s historic range, another species is declining in portions of its historic range, and the other two species may be beginning to decline in selected portions of their respective ranges. A number of factors have been implicated for these declines, though habitat loss is frequently cited as the most common factor associated with southwestern quail declines. Exotic species invasions in the United States represent a significant economic and biological threat to the United States. Many exotic organisms …

Fine Scale Influence Of Weather On Northern Bobwhite Abundance, Breeding Success, And Harvest In South Texas, Robert M. Perez, James F. Gallagher, Michael C. Frisbie
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Weather plays a substantial role in annual changes in populations of northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) within and among ecological regions. Few studies have tested this relationship within the confines of specific sites. We examined the fine scale influence of annual (12-month), seasonal (6-month), and monthly Modified Palmer Drought Severity Indices (PMDI) and raw precipitation on abundance, breeding success, and harvest of northern bobwhites on 2 sites in south Texas. We used 18 years (1984–01) of roadside census, juvenile : adult ratios, and harvest records from the Chaparral Wildlife Management Area (CWMA) in La Salle County and 15 years (1984–99) of …

Sustaining The 'Quail Wave' In The Southern Great Plains, Dale Rollins
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
The southern Great Plains (i.e., Texas and Oklahoma) historically affords some of the best, and currently most stable, northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations anywhere. However, bobwhite populations have declined in recent years over much of this area, especially east of the 98th meridian. Two subsets of the southern plains, the Rolling Plains (parts of northwestern Texas, western Oklahoma, and western Kansas) and the Rio Grande Plains (south Texas) offer the most expansive, contemporary northern bobwhite habitat throughout its range. Bobwhite habitat in the southern plains is affected primarily by rainfall and rangeland management for livestock. Range management practices (brush control, …

Quail Management: Issues, Concerns, And Solutions For Public And Private Lands - A Southeastern Perspective, L. Wes Burger
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Biologists generally assume that habitat loss, fragmentation, and conversion resulting from changes in landuse are primarily responsible for the nearly rangewide declines in northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) abundance noted since at least 1990. Few data-based analyses have addressed this relationship at broad spatial scales. We used data on northern bobwhite abundance from the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS; 1966–1999) and county-level landuse from the U.S. Census of Agriculture (COA; 1978, 1987, 1997) to evaluate how 9 landuse variables related to northern bobwhite abundance at the rangewide spatial scale. We also explored the relationship between cropland cover and northern bobwhite …

Parenting Bedtime Behaviors And Sleep Among Toddlers Living With Socioeconomic Adversity, Monica Roosa Ordway, Nancy S. Redeker, Craig Canapari, Sangchoon Jeon, Lois Sadler
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Sleep problems are very prevalent during the first year of life with 20-30% of infants reported to have a sleep problem. Families most commonly seek support from pediatric health care clinicians regarding their infant and toddler"s bedtime resistance and frequent and prolonged night wakening. While much has been published describing sleep patterns and sleep interventions to assist parents in helping their children initiate and maintain sleep, the majority of this literature included children living with middle to high incomes. Consistent with other health disparities, sleep disparities occur in children living in socioeconomically disadvantaged homes and emerging literature suggests that …

A Pilot Interprofessional Education And Practice Project With Migrant Farm Workers, Lora R. Shelton, Cynthia G. Cortes, Andrea W. Collins
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Annually, hundreds of migrant farm workers and their families migrate to the United States to harvest crops on family-owned farms. This population is plagued with recurring health conditions and chronic diseases (Nicholas, Stein, & Wold, 2014). Since few receive regular care, treatable conditions can become acute; resulting in costly emergency room visits or hospital stays. The Migrant Farm Worker Project was developed by nurse practitioners at a College of Health Sciences in the Southeastern United States. The project provided opportunities for faculty and students from nursing, communication sciences and disorders, and nutrition to provide medical screenings and education for Hispanic …

This study investigated the influence of dietary inorganic nitrate (NO3(-)) supplementation on pulmonary O2 uptake (V˙O2) and muscle deoxyhemoglobin/myoglobin (i.e. deoxy [Hb + Mb]) kinetics during submaximal cycling exercise. In a randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over study, eight healthy and physically active male subjects completed two step cycle tests at a work rate equivalent to 50% of the difference between the gas exchange threshold and peak V˙O2 over separate 4-day supplementation periods with NO3(-)-rich (BR; providing 8.4 mmol NO3(-)∙day(-1)) and NO3(-)-depleted (placebo; PLA) beetroot juice. Pulmonary V˙O2 was measured breath-by-breath and time-resolved near-infrared spectroscopy was utilized to quantify absolute deoxy [Hb + …
The Development Of A Gamebird Research Strategy: Unraveling The Importance Of Arthropod Populations, Nicolas W. Sotherton
The Development Of A Gamebird Research Strategy: Unraveling The Importance Of Arthropod Populations, Nicolas W. Sotherton
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
This paper describes work conducted in the United Kingdom (UK) on upland gamebirds, primarily gray partridge, that identified the importance of arthropod abundance in determining chick survival and in the overall population dynamics of this declining quarry species. Several sequential steps that were taken to quantify the importance of arthropods in determining levels of chick survival, ranging from laboratory studies with captive chicks, through field-based surveys to computer simulation are described. Next, various field-scale experiments to manipulate vegetation to increase arthropod densities are described. These included the management of cereal crop edges with reduced levels of pesticides.

Releasing Captive-Reared Masked Bobwhites For Population Recovery: A Review, Sally A. Gall, William P. Kuvlesky Jr., George Gee
National Quail Symposium Proceedings
Efforts to reestablish the endangered masked bobwhite (Colinus virginianus ridgwayi) to its former historic range have been a primary focus on the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge (BANWR) since it was established in 1986. Prerelease conditioning techniques developed prior to refuge establishment continued to be utilized in an effort to improve postrelease survival of captive-reared masked bobwhite chicks. Foremost among these techniques was the use of wild Texas bobwhite ( C. v. texanus) males as foster parents. Texas foster parents were released with broods from 1985-1996. The efficacy of this technique was evaluated in 1994 using radio telemetry. Results suggested …
