Clinical And Genome-Wide Analysis Of Cisplatin-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy In Survivors Of Adult-Onset Cancer, Heather E. Wheeler
Bioinformatics Faculty Publications
Purpose: Our purpose was to characterize the clinical influences, genetic risk factors, and gene mechanisms contributing to persistent cisplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy (CisIPN) in testicular cancer survivors (TCSs).
Experimental Design: TCS given cisplatin-based therapy completed the validated EORTC QLQ-CIPN20 questionnaire. An ordinal CisIPN phenotype was derived, and associations with age, smoking, excess drinking, hypertension, body mass index, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, cumulative cisplatin dose, and self-reported health were examined for 680 TCS. Genotyping was performed on the Illumina HumanOmniExpressExome chip. Following quality control and imputation, 5.1 million SNPs in 680 genetically European TCS formed the input set. GWAS and PrediXcan were used to …

The Effects Of Physical Activity, Sedentary Time, And Atherosclerosison Fluid Flow In The Lumbar Intervertebral Disc, Jennifer Ann Bowden
Theses and Dissertations
Physical activity impacts health and disease in multiple body tissues including the intervertebral discs. Fluid flow within the disc is an indicator of disc health that can be observed using diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging. We monitored activity levels of 26 participants, age 35 to 55 yrs, using Actigraph accelerometers for four days to evaluate vigorous-intensity activity, moderate to vigorous-intensity activity, and sedentary time. Participants underwent structural and diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate intervertebral disc health and fluid flow. They also underwent bone density scans, carotid artery ultrasounds, a treadmill test, and a physical exam for pain, range …

Modeling The Influence Of Early Skin-To-Skin Contact On Exclusive Breastfeeding In A Sample Of Hispanic Immigrant Women, Ana Maria Linares, Karen Wambach, Mary Kay Rayens, Amanda Wiggins, Elizabeth Coleman, Mark B. Dignan
Nursing Faculty Publications
Using data from a longitudinal study of breastfeeding in Hispanics, this study evaluated the influence of early skin-to-skin contact (SSC) on initiation and sustained exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) at 1 month postpartum. Two-thirds of the women in the sample participated in early SSC. At discharge, over half of the women were EBF; this proportion decreased to one-third at 1 month postpartum. Controlling for demographic and clinical variables in the model, participation in early SSC was associated with a greater than sevenfold increase in the odds of EBF at discharge (p = .005) but was not predictive of EBF at 1 …
No Parents Allowed: The Problem With Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, Javeria Ahmed
No Parents Allowed: The Problem With Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, Javeria Ahmed
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note critically examines the Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) provision, highlighting its unintended consequences that undermine family unity and harm children's well-being. While SIJS aims to protect children from abusive, neglectful, or abandoning parents, its current interpretation penalizes all natural parents, raising Equal Protection concerns and causing emotional and financial strain on families. The ntoe advocates for a more nuanced approach to SIJS, aligning it with humanitarian goals and child welfare principles.

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
A cross-sectional survey was done at the Section of Chemical Pathology, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, AKUH, Karachi, to determine frequency of Zn deficiency, the second major micronutrient deficiency in developing countries, in subjects coming for investigations. Data of plasma Zn, from Jan 2013 to Dec 2014 was analyzed and deficiency was labeled at <65ug/dl. Total 469 subjects were tested for plasma Zn levels over the period of 24 months and complete information was available for 422 subjects, included in final analysis. Median age of subjects was 13 yrs (IQR 7-35) and 57% were male. Mean plasma Zn levels of the total subjects were 105±42.6ug/dl. Out of the total subjects 13.5% (n=57) had Zn deficiency (mean plasma Zn 52±11 ug/dl), and most of them were of age group 6-16yrs. These findings advocate that diet of Pakistani children should be revised in order to provide sufficient amounts of Zn.

A Family Approach To Emergent Reading And Writing, Amanda Jones
A Family Approach To Emergent Reading And Writing, Amanda Jones
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
The research question addressed in this project was, how can adult education programming be developed to support parents of emergent readers and writers? It discusses the importance of emergent literacy, brain development, and the role of parents in their child’s development. The stages of emergent literacy, including milestones of child’s development are included. The research of Malcolm Knowles is the framework used in order to create a presentation that supports literacy in the home. Specifically, the six assumptions of andragogy (adult learning) from Knowles’s theory are identified and described.

The Long-Term Health Effects Of Fetal Malnutrition: Evidence From The 1959-1961 China Great Leap Forward Famine, Seonghoon Kim, Belton Fleisher, Jessica Ya Sun
Research Collection School Of Economics
We report evidence of long-term adverse health impacts of fetal malnutrition exposure of middle-aged survivors of the 1959-1961 China Famine using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. We find that fetal exposure to malnutrition has large and long-lasting impacts on both physical health and cognitive abilities, including the risks of suffering a stroke, physical disabilities in speech, walking and vision, and measures of mental acuity even half a century after the tragic event. Our findings imply that policies and programs that improve the nutritional status of pregnant women yield benefits on the health of a fetus that …

Sleeper Cells: The Stringent Response And Persistence In The Borreliella (Borrelia) Burgdorferi Enzootic Cycle, Felipe C. Cabello, Henry Godfrey, J Bugrysheva, Stuart A. Newman
NYMC Faculty Publications
Infections with tick-transmitted Borreliella (Borrelia) burgdorferi, the cause of Lyme disease, represent an increasingly large public health problem in North America and Europe. The ability of these spirochetes to maintain themselves for extended periods of time in their tick vectors and vertebrate reservoirs is crucial for continuance of the enzootic cycle as well as for the increasing exposure of humans to them. The stringent response mediated by the alarmone (p)ppGpp has been determined to be a master regulator in B. burgdorferi. It modulates the expression of identified and unidentified open reading frames needed to deal with and overcome the many …

The objective of this meta-analysis is to summarize the effect of exercise intervention on flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) in overweight and obese adults. We searched four electronic databases (PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and CINAHL) through June 2016 for relevant studies pertaining to the effectiveness of exercise intervention on FMD. Seventeen of the 91 studies identified met the inclusion criteria. Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software (version 3) was used to compute the standardized mean difference effect size (ES) and 95% CI using a random effects model. We calculated 34 ESs. We found that exercise intervention had medium and positive effects on FMD, with an overall ES …

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are a large and integral part of the UK’s economy, with over 99% of all Britain’s businesses classified as small or medium. Supporting the needs of SMEs across the UK has become crucial, while the demands for software tools placed by such businesses keep growing. We are particularly interested in the case of tools for sentiment analysis, because such tools have emerged lately as a good prospect for SMEs to turn data into opportunities. We have compared five of the most well-regarded sentiment analysis tools, and have concluded that none of them is sufficiently reliable …

Holistic Approach In Microalgae Conversion To Bioproducts And Biofuels Through Flash Hydrolysis, Ali Teymouri
Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In recent years, the demand for renewable energy, mainly biomass has increased. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that more than 13.3% of the total energy production in the first seven months of 2017 was produced from a biomass source. Among all biomass resources, microalgae has brought a lot of attention due to their numerous advantages such as higher growth rate and productivity compared with the conventional energy crops, higher energy conversion efficiency by photosynthesis, and less water requirement than terrestrial crops. However, its development is far behind industrial production. Several research efforts across the globe have been concerned with …

Leader-Parent Relationships In The Early Childhood Education Context: An Exploration Of Testimonial And Epistemic Justice, Shirley Eileen Adams
Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations
In this qualitative study, I examined epistemic justice and testimonial injustice experienced by parents of children enrolled in preschool programs. I used a triadic model arising from the synthesis of Fricker’s (2003) markers of epistemic justice, Hoy and Tschannen Moran’s (1999) Five Facets of Trust and Lea’s (2006) markers of collaboration, and employed modified grounded theory (Charmaz, 2008). Public preschool programs often promise that they can ameliorate cognitive and experiential gaps experienced by children who at risk and allow them to enter kindergarten on an equal footing with their more privileged peers (Hulme, Goetz, Gooch, Adams & Snowling, 2007; Camilli …

Usefulness Of Delivery Methods For Climate Change Programming: Perspectives Of Extension And Research Faculty, Kaila Thorn, Daniel Tobin, Rama Radhakrishna, Allison Chatchyan, Joana Chan, Shorna Allred
Journal of Extension
Extension is responding to climate change through programming intended to encourage adaptation and mitigation in agricultural production and natural resources management. However, effectively engaging target audiences requires identifying appropriate delivery methods. We conducted a study to identify delivery methods researchers and Extension professionals at land-grant universities in the northeastern United States perceive as useful for climate change outreach. Respondents viewed all delivery methods as only slightly useful, though traditional options, including face-to-face interactions and the use of videos and websites, were perceived as slightly more useful than other delivery methods. Therefore, we in Extension must experiment with various delivery methods …

Perceptions Of Crop Consultants And Crop Producers On Grazing Corn Residue In Nebraska, Jordan L. Cox-O'Neill, Kristen M. Ulmer, Manbir Rakkar, Lisa Franzen-Castle, Humberto Blanco-Canqui, Mary E. Drewnoski, James C. Macdonald, Richard J. Rasby
Journal of Extension
We conducted a survey to evaluate factors influencing consultant recommendations on grazing and producer grazing practices in Nebraska. Producers who did not graze cited soil compaction, inconvenience (lack of watering and fencing), and lack of access to livestock as major reasons for not grazing. Producers who allowed grazing and consultants who recommended grazing were more likely than those who did not favor grazing to perceive that grazing increased subsequent grain yields. Most consultants and producers reported making decisions on the basis of their personal observations. Findings from the survey can be used for enhanced Extension dissemination and research activities regarding …
The Prospects Of Zinc As A Structural Material For Biodegradable Implants—A Review Paper, Galit Katarivas Levy, Jeremy Goldman, Eli Aghion
The Prospects Of Zinc As A Structural Material For Biodegradable Implants—A Review Paper, Galit Katarivas Levy, Jeremy Goldman, Eli Aghion
Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1
In the last decade, iron and magnesium, both pure and alloyed, have been extensively studied as potential biodegradable metals for medical applications. However, broad experience with these material systems has uncovered critical limitations in terms of their suitability for clinical applications. Recently, zinc and zinc-based alloys have been proposed as new additions to the list of degradable metals and as promising alternatives to magnesium and iron. The main byproduct of zinc metal corrosion, Zn2+, is highly regulated within physiological systems and plays a critical role in numerous fundamental cellular processes. Zn2+ released from an implant may suppress …
