USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

I thought that was really interesting the way people are hashtaging disability like the “d-i-s” is lowercase and the “ability” is uppercase. (Oh okay) Um so it’s like “look what I can do with my disability” or like “look at all my abilities”.

A Study Of Marine Terrace Formation Along The California Central Coast, Mary C. Devlin Nov 2017

A Study Of Marine Terrace Formation Along The California Central Coast, Mary C. Devlin

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Marine terrace formation is in many instances attributed to wave action, and shore platforms are often called “wave-cut”. However, alternative models for marine terrace formation suggest that other types of physical and chemical weathering have a more central role in the formation of marine terraces than is widely acknowledged. Roering and Retallack (2012) concluded that the roles of subaerial physical and chemical weathering are significant, and played a major role in the formation of the terraces. In this study, weathering of beach cliffs and shore platforms associated with marine terraces at eight sites in two different locations along the central …

Electron Parallel Transport For Arbitrary Collisionality, Jeong-Young Ji, Gunsu S. Yun, Yong-Su Na, Eric D. Held Nov 2017

Electron Parallel Transport For Arbitrary Collisionality, Jeong-Young Ji, Gunsu S. Yun, Yong-Su Na, Eric D. Held

All Physics Faculty Publications

Integral (nonlocal) closures [J.-Y. Ji and E. D. Held, Phys. Plasmas 21, 122116 (2014)] are combined with the momentum balance equation to derive electron parallel transport relations. For a single harmonic fluctuation, the relations take the same form as the classical Spitzer theory (with possible additional terms): the electric current and heat flux densities are connected to the modified electric field and temperature gradient by transport coefficients. In contrast to the classical theory, the dimensionless coefficients depend on the collisionality quantified by a Knudsen number, the ratio of the collision length to the angular wavelength. The key difference comes from …

"Not Yet The End Of The World": Political Cultures Of Opposition And Creation In The Global Youth Climate Justice Movement, John Foran, Summer Gray, Corrie Grosse

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Based on participant observation and in-depth interviews with two dozen young climate justice activists at the U.N. climate summit COP19 in Warsaw, Poland, in November 2013, this research uses the concepts of “political cultures of opposition and of creation” to analyze the political orientations, discourse, and actions of global climate justice activists attempting to impact the negotiation of a universal climate treaty. Capturing relationships among experience, emotions, ideology, idioms, and organization, the concepts of political cultures of opposition and of creation shed light on the ability of these actors to fashion social movements of their own making. Through an analysis …

Platonism Of The Future, Patrick L. Miller Nov 2017

Platonism Of The Future, Patrick L. Miller

Sophia and Philosophia

Buying textbooks, writing syllabi, and putting on armor. This is how many students and teachers prepared to return to campus this past fall. The last few years have witnessed an intensifying war for the soul of the university, with many minor skirmishes, and several pitched battles. The most dramatic was last spring at Evergreen State, shortly before the end of the spring semester.[1] Perhaps the most dramatic since then has been at Reed College.[2] There is no shortage of examples, filling periodicals left and right. Wherever it next explodes, this war promises more ferocity, causing more casualties—careers, programs, ideals.

Dennis Mahan’S Leadership And Tactics: How A West Point Professor Shaped The Course Of The Civil War, Nick Tarchis

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

This summer, while doing research at Stratford Hall, I happened across the name of one West Point professor who quite literally taught every cadet who fought in the Civil War. It is fairly common knowledge than many of the war’s great commanders were classmates together at West Point. For example, the class of 1842 contained George McClellan, James Longstreet, and John Pope. Such commanders influenced the course of the war by drawing upon their West Point education, and while they may have held different military outlooks, they all drew upon the teachings of one man: Dennis Mahan, professor of mathematics …

Evaluation Of Wrf Scm Simulations Of Stratocumulus-Topped Marine And Coastal Boundary Layers And Improvements To Turbulence And Entrainment Parameterizations, Mohamed S. Ghonima, Handa Yang, Chang Ki Kim, Thijs Heus, Jan Kleissl Nov 2017

Evaluation Of Wrf Scm Simulations Of Stratocumulus-Topped Marine And Coastal Boundary Layers And Improvements To Turbulence And Entrainment Parameterizations, Mohamed S. Ghonima, Handa Yang, Chang Ki Kim, Thijs Heus, Jan Kleissl

Physics Faculty Publications

© 2017. The Authors. Stratocumulus-topped boundary layers (STBLs) are notoriously difficult to parameterize in single-column models due to the strong inversion layer across which entrainment mixing plays an important role in modulating the boundary layer mass, energy, and moisture balances. We compare three different WRF planetary boundary layer (PBL) schemes (Yonsei University, YSU; Asymmetric Convective Model version 2, ACM2; Mellor-Yamada-Nakanishi-Niino, MYNN) against large eddy simulations (LES) to find out that they underestimate entrainment flux in stratocumulus over both ocean and coastal land. Hence, the PBL schemes produce a cooler, moister STBL with higher liquid water content. In order to improve …

Drone technology is beginning to permeate many aspects of life in the modern world, and for good reason. Delivery drones can efficiently deliver packages better than any existing methods. Medical drones can reach emergency patients faster than any ambulance. Security drones can surveil areas more quickly and more thoroughly than a team of human guards. The advent of commercial and industrial uses for drones, however, begets the vital question of how can drones be used outside the workplace. Intel's answer? Entertainment.

Thus, the Intel Shooting StarTM drone was born, a quadcopter explicitly built for producing breathtaking aerial light shows …

Automated Cluster Provisioning And Workflow Management For Parallel Scientific Applications In The Cloud, Brandon Posey, Christopher Gropp, Alexander Herzog, Amy Apon

Publications

Many commercial cloud providers and tools are available that researchers could utilize to advance computational science research. However, adoption by the research community has been slow. In this paper we describe the automated Pro-visioning And Workflow (PAW) management tool for parallel scientific applications in the cloud. PAW is a comprehensive resource provisioning and workflow tool that automates the steps of dynamically provisioning a large scale cluster environment in the cloud, executing a set of jobs or a custom workflow and, after the jobs have completed, de-provisioning the cluster environment in a single operation. A key characteristic of PAW is that …

My Sensory Issue, Kaylee Dudley

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

There’s totally a running joke like every OT has some sensory issue. Uh like, like “What’s yours?” Um so, that’s kind of like you know somebody will do something like “Ah, I just I have sensory issues.” And it’s not meant mean it’s just like…you know I hate touching shaving cream like that’s one of the things we do with therapy sometimes is we practice pre-writing in shaving cream. I hate it hate it hate it. (Laughing) I hate it!

Metallic nanostructures that exhibit tailored optical resonances spanning from the near to mid-infrared spectral range are of particular interest for spectroscopic and optical measurements in these spectral domains that can benefit from localized surface-enhancement effects. Plasmon resonances shifted in the near or mid-infrared range could be used to further enhance the excitation and/or the emission of an optical process. Surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) is one of such processes and can particularly benefit from plasmon-enhanced local fields yielding an increase in sensitivity towards the detection of an analyte. Herein, we have fabricated a series of gold dendritic nanostructures, prepared by electron-beam …

A Micro-Raman Study Of Exfoliated Few-Layered N-Type Bi2 Te2.7 Se0.3, Liu Fengjiao, Karakaya Mehmet, Pooja Puneet, Rahul Rao, Podila Ramakrishna, Sriparna Bhattacharya, Apparao M. Rao

Publications

Previously we showed that the thermoelectric (TE) performance of bulk n-type Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 can be enhanced by subjecting it to a combined process of chemical or mechanical exfoliation (C/ME) followed by a rapid densification and restacking of the exfoliated layers via the spark-plasma-sintering technique (SPS). Here, we present a systematic micro-Raman study of two-dimensional flakes of n-type Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 produced by the C/ME process, as a function of the flake thickness. We found Raman evidence for flakes with: (i) integer number of quintuples which exhibited a strong electron-phonon coupling, and …

Ski resorts are very popular among both avid skiers and families who are looking to have fun. In fact, winter resorts account for over 3 billion dollars in revenue, with an annual growth of 2.6% [IBI]. In addition to their use as recreational areas, ski resorts are also used for various winter competitions, most famously the Olympics. Our job was to design and create a suitable ski resort for both the Olympics and for recreational use in the Wasatch Peaks Range property. In addition, we were advised to create over 160km of trails and maintain a 20%- 40%-40% balance between …
