Office of the Provost

High-throughput sequencing (HTS) of immunoglobulin (B-cell receptor, antibody) and T-cell receptor repertoires has increased dramatically since the technique was introduced in 2009 (1-3). This experimental approach explores the maturation of the adaptive immune system and its response to antigens, pathogens, and disease conditions in exquisite detail. It holds significant promise for diagnostic and therapy-guiding applications. New technology often spreads rapidly, sometimes more rapidly than the understanding of how to make the products of that technology reliable, reproducible, or usable by others. As complex technologies have developed, scientific communities have come together to adopt common standards, protocols, and policies for generating …

Design Of Telescopic Beams Based On Parametric Studies Using Fea And Statistical Optimization, Neha Arieckal Jacob

Philosophy Dissertations

This dissertation describes an investigation on the behavior of the overlap area in telescopic cantilevers under tip loads. The main aim of this research is to address the question of ‘how the overlap region of a telescopic beam behaves under a tip load’ and to develop a new generic approach to the design of telescopic beams based on parametric studies using FEA and statistical optimization. Experimental investigations and exploratory analyses were carried out to study the behavior of RHS (Rectangular Hollow Section) rings and RHS pieces. Based on these observations, theoretical explanations were developed and a methodology for the design …

A High Quality, Eulerian 3d Fluid Solver In C++, Lejon Anthony Mcgowan Nov 2017

A High Quality, Eulerian 3d Fluid Solver In C++, Lejon Anthony Mcgowan

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Fluids are a part of everyday life, yet are one of the hardest elements to properly render in computer graphics. Water is the most obvious entity when thinking of what a fluid simulation can achieve (and it is indeed the focus of this project), but many other aspects of nature, like fog, clouds, and particle effects. Real-time graphics like video games employ many heuristics to approximate these effects, but large-scale renderers aim to simulate these effects as closely as possible.

In this project, I wish to achieve effects of the latter nature. Using the Eulerian technique of discrete grids, I …

We present a case of a 79-year-old male who presented with retroperitoneal hematoma a week after motor vehicle accident. Prior history and family history of bleeding were nonsignificant. His activated partial thromboplastin time was found to be prolonged in the emergency department. Further workup with coagulation studies showed decreased factor VIII, vWF antigen, and vWF:ristocetin cofactor assay, and negative Bethesda assay, indicating acquired von Willebrand disease. Immunofluorescence to find an underlying etiology was suggestive of MGUS. Management of AvWD depends on controlling active bleeding and treating the underlying cause. He was treated with factor VIII, haemate-p, rituximab, two cycles of …

Tracing Sediment Erosion In The Yangtze River Subaqueous Delta Using Magnetic Methods, Can Ge, Weiguo Zhang, Chenyin Dong, Feng Wang, Huan Feng, Jianguo Qu, Lizhong Yu

Department of Earth and Environmental Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We assessed the usefulness of magnetic properties for tracing sediment erosion in a deltaic environment. Surface and core sediments from the Yangtze River subaqueous delta were subjected to magnetic, granulometric, geochemical, and radionuclide analyses. Based on magnetic properties and particle size, the surface sediments can be divided into three groups. Groups I and II have a similar particle size distribution and geochemical composition, but the former has higher values of magnetic susceptibility (χ) and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM). We interpret Group I as consisting of modern sediments, while Group II represents previously buried sediments that have undergone significant reductive …

The primary purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate one of the applications of P300 event-related potential (ERP), i.e., brain-computer interface (BCI). Researchers and students will find the chapter appealing with a preliminary description of P300 ERP. This chapter also appreciates the importance and advantages of noninvasive ERP technique. In noninvasive BCI, the P300 ERPs are extracted from brain electrical activities [electroencephalogram (EEG)] as a signature of the underlying electrophysiological mechanism of brain responses to the external or internal changes and events. As the chapter proceeds, topics are covered on more relevant scholarly works about challenges and new directions in …

Cardinal Characteristics And Countable Borel Equivalence Relations, Samuel Coskey, Scott Schneider Nov 2017

Cardinal Characteristics And Countable Borel Equivalence Relations, Samuel Coskey, Scott Schneider

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Boykin and Jackson recently introduced a property of countable Borel equivalence relations called Borel boundedness, which they showed is closely related to the union problem for hyperfinite equivalence relations. In this paper, we introduce a family of properties of countable Borel equivalence relations which correspond to combinatorial cardinal characteristics of the continuum in the same way that Borel boundedness corresponds to the bounding number . We analyze some of the basic behavior of these properties, showing, e.g., that the property corresponding to the splitting number coincides with smoothness. We then settle many of the implication relationships between the properties; …

The Perceived Needs Of Teachers Of At-Risk Students, Daniel J. Rushton

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation was to determine the perceived needs of teachers of at-risk students in regard to strategy-based professional development and supports for teachers to perform better within the classroom. Of secondary interest within this dissertation was whether differences exist between the perceived needs of teachers of at-risk students and the perceived needs of teachers of non-at-risk students. This was accomplished through a quantitative survey and data analysis that examined the perceived needs of teachers. Participants completed a survey in which they ranked their interest in specific strategy-based professional development and additional supports. The data was …

Elementary Teachers' Perceptions On How Positive Behavioral Interventions And Supports (Pbis) Relate To Academic Achievement, Tamalita S. Funches

CUP Ed.D. Dissertations

This phenomenological research study reviews elementary teachers’ perceptions on how Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) relate to academic achievement. Researchers have identified the need for effective behavioral management plans to assist teachers with student discipline concerns and academic achievement. PBIS provides an effective framework for accomplishing these outcomes. Purposeful sampling identified 10 participants for individual interviews and completing a Qualtrics survey. During the 1:1 interviews, participants expressed their perceived ideas and experiences with PBIS as a behavioral management framework that was used to manage behavior and improve student academic achievement. The surveys provided an additional analysis of the participants’ …
