The Effects Of Gamification On Corporate Compliance Training: A Field Experiment Of True Office Anti-Corruption Training Programs, Ryan J. Baxter, D. Kip Holderness, David A. Wood
The Effects Of Gamification On Corporate Compliance Training: A Field Experiment Of True Office Anti-Corruption Training Programs, Ryan J. Baxter, D. Kip Holderness, David A. Wood
Faculty Publications
Companies rely on internal controls to comply with the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the U.K. Bribery Act. One such control is anti-corruption employee training. Although corporate training is a key component of anti-fraud policies and procedures, it is often perceived as dull by employees. To motivate greater engagement, firms are experimenting with training that involves elements of digital games, known as gamification. We perform a field experiment with 158 employees of a large, multinational bank to examine the effectiveness of gamified anticorruption training. We find that employees strongly prefer gamified training to traditional, nongamified training and that gamified …

A Modular Architecture For Transparent Computation In Recurrent Neural Networks, Gs Carmantini, P Beim Graben, M Desroches, S Rodrigues
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Computation is classically studied in terms of automata, formal languages and algorithms; yet, the relation between neural dynamics and symbolic representations and operations is still unclear in traditional eliminative connectionism. Therefore, we suggest a unique perspective on this central issue, to which we would like to refer as transparent connectionism, by proposing accounts of how symbolic computation can be implemented in neural substrates. In this study we first introduce a new model of dynamics on a symbolic space, the versatile shift, showing that it supports the real-time simulation of a range of automata. We then show that the Gödelization of …

The Effect Of Gaze Angle On Visual Acuity In Infantile Nystagmus, Mj Dunn, D Wiggins, Jm Woodhouse, Et Al
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
PURPOSE: Most individuals with infantile nystagmus (IN) have an idiosyncratic gaze angle at which their nystagmus intensity is minimized. Some adopt an abnormal head posture to use this "null zone," and it has therefore long been assumed that this provides people with nystagmus with improved visual acuity (VA). However, recent studies suggest that improving the nystagmus waveform could have little, if any, influence on VA; that is, VA is fundamentally limited in IN. Here, we examined the impact of the null zone on VA. METHODS: Visual acuity was measured in eight adults with IN using a psychophysical staircase procedure with …

Multiaxial Fatigue Assessment Of Friction Stir Welded Tubular Joints Of Al 6082-T6, L Susmel, Dg Hattingh, Mn James, R Tovo
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The present paper addresses the problem of designing aluminium friction stir (FS) welded joints against multiaxial fatigue. After developing a bespoke FS welding technology suitable for joining aluminium tubes, some one hundred welded tubular specimens of Al 6082-T6 were tested under pure axial, pure torsional and biaxial tension-torsion loading. The influence was explored of two independent variables, namely the proportional or non-proportional nature of the biaxial loading and the effect of axial and torsional non-zero mean stresses. The experimental results were re-analysed using the Modified Wöhler Curve Method (MWCM), with this bi-parametrical critical plane approach being applied in terms of …

Insider Misuse Identification Using Transparent Biometrics, N Clarke, F Li, A Alruban, S Furnell
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Insider misuse is a key threat to organizations. Recent research has focused upon the information itself – either through its protection or approaches to detect the leakage. This paper seeks a different approach through the application of transparent biometrics to provide a robust approach to the identification of the individuals who are misusing systems and information. Transparent biometrics are a suite of modalities, typically behavioral-based that can capture biometric signals covertly or non-intrusively – so the user is unaware of their capture. Transparent biometrics are utilized in two phases a) to imprint digital objects with biometric-signatures of the user who …

This work explores the humidity and temperature response of volume phase slanted gratings recorded in photopolymers with varied chemical composition. Acrylamide and diacetone acrylamide were used as monomers and triethanolamine and N-phenylglycine were used as photoinitiators. The study demonstrates that the response of photopolymer-based holographic gratings to relative humidity (RH) and temperature (T) can be tuned by alteration of the photopolymer composition.Humidity and temperature response of the holograms has been characterized by recording Bragg selectivity curves of transmission gratings and by monitoring the position of the maximum intensity in the spectral response of reflection gratings. Investigation of the humidity response …
Oscillatory Neural Models Of The Basal Ganglia For Action Selection In Healthy And Parkinsonian Cases, R Borisyuk
Oscillatory Neural Models Of The Basal Ganglia For Action Selection In Healthy And Parkinsonian Cases, R Borisyuk
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The neuronal circuits of the Basal Ganglia (BG) play an important role in movement control and it is known that without correctly functioning BG, the cortex’s ability to control movements is diminished. Parkinson’s disease (PD), for example, is primarily a disease of the basal ganglia. One aspect of pathological activity in the parkinsonian basal ganglia is an increase in synchronous oscillatory firing patterns

A Robust E-Invigilation System Employing Multimodal Biometric Authentication, Ss Ketab, Nl Clarke, Ps Dowland
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The significant growth in users of e-learning technologies and their use in courses has given rise to a major concern over protecting them from misuse; a significant concern is that of the potential for cheating or illicit assistance during online examinations. This paper presents the development of robust, flexible, transparent and continuous authentication mechanism for e-assessments. To monitor the exam taker and ensure that only the legitimate student is taking the exam, the system offers a continuous user identification employing multimodal biometrics; a security layer using an eye tracker to record the student’s eye movement; and, speech recognition to detect …
Let The Machines Out. Towards Hybrid Social Systems, M Straeubig
Let The Machines Out. Towards Hybrid Social Systems, M Straeubig
School of Art, Design and Architecture
INTRODUCTION When Alan Turing proposed the imitation game as a method to investigate the question if machines can think, he described a social system. However, the various disciplines that have pursued this seminal enquiry rarely touch base with sociological concepts. Cybernetics developed into various interdisciplinary fields, yet it was mainly rooted in physiological models. In the meantime, the mainstream of AI focused on cognitive problem solving, predominately from a topdown approach. Traditional cognitive science rests on the concept of organisms as information processing systems - so does Artificial Life, but from a biological simulation perspective. The recently revitalised branch of …

Internet Risks For Children: Parents' Perceptions And Attitudes: An Investigative Study Of The Saudi Context, Norah Alqahtani, Steven Furnell, Shirley Atkinson, Ingo Stengel
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Internet has become a part of our children's daily activities at home and at school. The benefits of the Internet for children are huge and include education and entertainment. However, the same technologies also pose some risks that parents need to identify and guard against. A lack of awareness can cause children to encounter serious danger and become victims of Internet criminals. To the best of the authors' knowledge, no previous research has been conducted in Saudi Arabia on parent's awareness of the risks of Internet use to their children and how Saudi's parents seek to mitigate those risks. This …

Security Education And Awareness: Just Let Them Burn?, S Furnell, I Vasileiou
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
© 2017 Elsevier Ltd It is now readily recognised that cyber-security is not just a technical issue, with many breaches highlighting insufficient attention towards human aspects. One of the fundamental reasons for this is that people are not naturally equipped with the skills, instincts and behaviours required to ensure appropriate protection and so need support in order to help them understand what they should be doing and learn how to do it. However, looking at the evidence from surveys over the years, it becomes clear that security awareness, training and education often hold the curious distinction of being overlooked as …

Muddy Waters: Unintentional Consequences Of Blue Carbon Research Obscure Our Understanding Of Organic Carbon Dynamics In Seagrass Ecosystems, E. Fay Belshe, Miguel-Angel Mateo, Lucy Gillis, Martin Zimmer, Mirta Teichberg
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The recent surge in research on organic carbon sequestration by seagrass ecosystems has begun to reveal the complexity of the carbon cycle within these ecosystems. In this prospective we discuss two areas of investigation that require further scrutiny: (1) why organic carbon is stabilized in seagrass sediments, and (2) how long organic carbon resides within these sediments. By delving into these topics, pointing out current pitfalls, and highlighting methodological advances, our motive is to focus future efforts and provide a frame work to manage the complexity found within the diverse seagrass bioregions. The high rate of seagrass degradation and loss, …
