Conjoint Utilization Of Structured And Unstructured Information For Planning Interleaving Deliberation In Supply Chains, Naeem K. Janjua, O. K. Hussain, E. Chang, Syed M. S. Islam

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Effective business planning requires seamless access and intelligent analysis of information in its totality to allow the business planner to gain enhanced critical business insights for decision support. Current business planning tools provide insights from structured business data (i.e. sales forecasts, customers and products data, inventory details) only and fail to take into account unstructured complementary information residing in contracts, reports, user's comments, emails etc. In this article, a planning support system is designed and developed that empower business planners to develop and revise business plans utilizing both structured data and unstructured information conjointly. This planning system activity model comprises …

Considerations On The Assessment And Use Of Cycling Performance Metrics And Their Integration In The Athlete's Biological Passport, Paolo Mensaspa, Chris Abbiss

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Over the past few decades the possibility to capture real-time data from road cyclists has drastically improved. Given the increasing pressure for improved transparency and openness, there has been an increase in publication of cyclists' physiological and performance data. Recently, it has been suggested that the use of such performance biometrics may be used to strengthen the sensitivity and applicability of the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) and aid in the fight against doping. This is an interesting concept which has merit, although there are several important factors that need to be considered. These factors include accuracy of the data collected …

Are Rolling Averages A Good Way To Assess Training Load For Injury Prevention?, Paolo Mensaspa Jan 2017

Are Rolling Averages A Good Way To Assess Training Load For Injury Prevention?, Paolo Mensaspa

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

I read the letter ‘Time to bin the term ‘overuse’ injury: is ‘training load error’ a more accurate term?’ with great interest.1 I agree with the authors that changes in training load (TL) could increase injury risk and I share their concern relating to periods of low/no loads. However, the terminology suggested by Drew and Purdam ‘errors in training load prescription’ may not be ideal. In fact, despite the potentially flawless TL prescription, some spikes in load may be due to variables that are out of control, such as variability in the demands of competitions,2 and cannot be avoided. Moreover, …

Netnography: Range Of Practices, Misperceptions, And Missed Opportunities, Leesa N. Costello, Marie-Louise Mcdermott, Ruth M. Wallace Jan 2017

Netnography: Range Of Practices, Misperceptions, And Missed Opportunities, Leesa N. Costello, Marie-Louise Mcdermott, Ruth M. Wallace

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This is the first article to describe how broadening of the term netnography in qualitative research is leading to misperceptions and missed opportunities. The once accepted need for human presence in netnographic studies is giving way to nonparticipatory (passive) approaches, which claim to be naturalistic and bias-free. While this may be tenable in some environments, it also removes the opportunity for cocreation in online communities and social media spaces. By contrast, participatory (active) netnographers have an opportunity to conduct their research in a way that contributes value and a continuity of narrative to online spaces. This article examines the ways …

A Novel Induction Heating System Using Multilevel Neutral Point Clamped Inverter, Bashar Mohammed Flayyih Al Shammeri Jan 2017

A Novel Induction Heating System Using Multilevel Neutral Point Clamped Inverter, Bashar Mohammed Flayyih Al Shammeri

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

This thesis investigates a novel DC/AC resonant inverter of Induction Heating (IH) system presenting a Multilevel Neutral Point Clamped (MNPCI) topology, as a new part of power supply design. The main function of the prototype is to provide a maximum and steady state power transfer from converter to the resonant load tank, by achieving zero current switching (ZCS) with selecting the best design of load tank topology, and utilizing the advantage aspects of both the Voltage Fed Inverter (VFI) and Current Fed Inverter (CFI) kinds, therefore it can considered as a hybrid-inverter (HVCFI) category . The new design benefits from …

User-Centric Traffic Engineering In Software Defined Networks, Taimur Bakhshi Jan 2017

User-Centric Traffic Engineering In Software Defined Networks, Taimur Bakhshi

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Software defined networking (SDN) is a relatively new paradigm that decouples individual network elements from the control logic, offering real-time network programmability, translating high level policy abstractions into low level device configurations. The framework comprises of the data (forwarding) plane incorporating network devices, while the control logic and network services reside in the control and application planes respectively. Operators can optimize the network fabric to yield performance gains for individual applications and services utilizing flow metering and application-awareness, the default traffic management method in SDN. Existing approaches to traffic optimization, however, do not explicitly consider user application trends. Recent SDN …

Flow Through A Very Porous Obstacle In A Shallow Channel, M. J. Creed, S. Draper, T. Nishino, A. G.L. Borthwick Jan 2017

Flow Through A Very Porous Obstacle In A Shallow Channel, M. J. Creed, S. Draper, T. Nishino, A. G.L. Borthwick

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

A theoretical model, informed by numerical simulations based on the shallow water equations, is developed to predict the flow passing through and around a uniform porous obstacle in a shallow channel, where background friction is important. This problem is relevant to a number of practical situations, including flow through aquatic vegetation, the performance of arrays of turbines in tidal channels and hydrodynamic forces on offshore structures. To demonstrate this relevance, the theoretical model is used to (i) reinterpret core flow velocities in existing laboratory-based data for an array of emergent cylinders in shallow water emulating aquatic vegetation and (ii) reassess …

Wave Directional Spreading From Point Field Measurements, M. L. Mcallister, V. Venugopal, A. G.L. Borthwick Jan 2017

Wave Directional Spreading From Point Field Measurements, M. L. Mcallister, V. Venugopal, A. G.L. Borthwick

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Ocean waves have multidirectional components. Most wave measurements are taken at a single point, and so fail to capture information about the relative directions of the wave components directly. Conventional means of directional estimation require a minimum of three concurrent time series of measurements at different spatial locations in order to derive information on local directional wave spreading. Here, the relationship between wave nonlinearity and directionality is utilized to estimate local spreading without the need for multiple concurrent measurements, following Adcock & Taylor (Adcock & Taylor 2009 Proc. R. Soc. A 465 , 3361–3381. ( doi:10.1098/rspa.2009.0031 )), with the assumption …

Offshore Monopile In The Southern North Sea: Part I, Calibrated Input Sea State, Ariel J. Edesess, Denis Kelliher, Alistair G.L. Borthwick, Gareth P. Thomas

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Safe, reliable access is an essential precondition for the successful maintenance of offshore wind farms. Access from vessels to wind turbines depends on the severity of the sea state in the vicinity of the turbine support structure. This paper presents a validation of a numerical boundary condition developed to reproduce the seasonal sea state at Teesside Offshore Wind Farm, off the coast of the UK. The boundary condition, called customSpectrum, was derived from wave energy spectra obtained by analysis of existing field measurements of wave free-surface displacement at the wind farm site and implemented in OpenFoam, the open-source computational fluid …

Numerical Modeling Of Tidal Notch Sequences On Rocky Coasts Of The Mediterranean Basin, S. Schneiderwind, S. J. Boulton, I. Papanikolaou, M. Kázmér, K. Reicherter Jan 2017

Numerical Modeling Of Tidal Notch Sequences On Rocky Coasts Of The Mediterranean Basin, S. Schneiderwind, S. J. Boulton, I. Papanikolaou, M. Kázmér, K. Reicherter

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

AbstractTidal notches have had the potential to form at sea level from ~6.5 kyr B.P. in the Mediterranean Basin and preserve a symmetrical shape comparable to a quadric polynomial. Continuous erosion, predominantly by biological agents, affects a limestone cliff face from low‐ to high‐tide level at <1 mm/yr. Statically determined, the roots of a quadric polynomial are defined by the tidal range representing the limits of effective erosion. However, gradual variations of eustatic sea level rise (slow) and coseismic uplift/subsidence (fast) in tectonically active regions contribute to vertical shifts in the erosional base at coastlines. As a consequence, the cliff morphology gets modified through time resulting in widening, deepening, and separation of notches and possible overprinting of older features. In order to investigate successive modifications of coastal cliff morphology, we developed a numerical model that considers the erosion rate, the erosion zone relative to sea level, the regional sea level curve, and tectonic motion. The results show how slow and rapid sea level changes bias the modern cliff face and highlight that the present‐day notch sequence from top descending to sea level is not inevitably of decreasing age. Furthermore, the initiation of notch formation is not necessarily linked to the date of a certain seismic event. Especially in extensional tectonic settings where coseismic uplift is low and coastal morphological marks are not as distinct, knowledge about coastal evolution is beneficial for paleoseismological research.

Reducing The Complexity Of Equalisation And Decoding Of Shingled Writing, Muhammad Bashir Abdulrazaq Jan 2017

Reducing The Complexity Of Equalisation And Decoding Of Shingled Writing, Muhammad Bashir Abdulrazaq

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) technology is important in the immediate need for expansion of magnetic hard disk beyond the limit of current disk technology. SMR provides a solution with the least change from current technology among contending technologies. Robust easy to implement Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques are needed to achieve the potentials of SMR. Current DSP techniques proposed border on the usage of Two Dimensional Magnetic Recording (TDMR) techniques in equalisation and detection, coupled with iterative error correction codes such as Low Density Parity Check (LDPC). Currently, Maximum Likelihood (ML) algorithms are normally used in TDMR detection. The shortcomings …

Simulation Tools For The Study Of The Interaction Between Communication And Action In Cognitive Robots, Tomassino Ferrauto

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

In this thesis I report the development of FARSA (Framework for Autonomous Robotics Simulation and Analysis), a simulation tool for the study of the interaction between language and action in cognitive robots and more in general for experiments in embodied cognitive science. Before presenting the tools, I will describe a series of experiments that involve simulated humanoid robots that acquire their behavioural and language skills autonomously through a trial-and-error adaptive process in which random variations of the free parameters of the robots’ controller are retained or discarded on the basis of their effect on the overall behaviour exhibited by the …
