Critical Shear Stress Estimates For Sunken Alberta Bitumen In An Annular Flume, Ian P. Gaudreau Jan 2017

Critical Shear Stress Estimates For Sunken Alberta Bitumen In An Annular Flume, Ian P. Gaudreau

Master's Theses and Capstones

Under certain environmental conditions and depending on its specific gravity, spilled oil has the ability to sink to the bottom of a water body (e.g., lake, river, ocean) (i.e., sunken oil). Once there, it can be difficult to predict the sunken oil’s fate and transport, making response efforts challenging. The Office of Response and Restoration (ORR) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) currently uses mathematical models in an attempt to better predict the movement of spilled oil. However, mathematical models cannot be simulative of the predicted trajectory if the physical or chemical properties of the oil are unknown, …

Model Fit Diagnostics For Hidden Markov Models, Safaa K. Kadhem Jan 2017

Model Fit Diagnostics For Hidden Markov Models, Safaa K. Kadhem

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics Theses

Hidden Markov models (HMMs) are an efficient tool to describe and model the underlying behaviour of many phenomena. HMMs assume that the observed data are generated independently from a parametric distribution, conditional on an unobserved process that satisfies the Markov property. The model selection or determining the number of hidden states for these models is an important issue which represents the main interest of this thesis. Applying likelihood-based criteria for HMMs is a challenging task as the likelihood function of these models is not available in a closed form. Using the data augmentation approach, we derive two forms of the …

This research devised a development framework and learning tool in order to enhance overall …

Instability In Nonequilibrium And Nonthermal Plasma Discharges, Rajib Mahamud Jan 2017

Instability In Nonequilibrium And Nonthermal Plasma Discharges, Rajib Mahamud

Theses and Dissertations

Microplasma, or plasma in micron scale interelectrode separation, is an effective way to attain nonthermal plasma operation at atmospheric and higher pressure. However, the small size causes the effect of other operating parameters to be crucial in stable operation and make the microplasma discharge system to be susceptible to instabilities. The two major instabilities that are commonly observed are the instability in the negative differential resistance (NDR) region and the Striations or the ionization waves. The physics and reaction kinetics of NDR instability for high pressure system is not well understood. This study pursues both experimental characterization and development of …

Modeling Of Tow Wrinkling In Automated Fiber Placement Based On Geometrical Considerations, Roudy Wehbe Jan 2017

Modeling Of Tow Wrinkling In Automated Fiber Placement Based On Geometrical Considerations, Roudy Wehbe

Theses and Dissertations

Automated manufacturing of fiber reinforced composite structures via numerically controlled hardware yields parts with increased accuracy and repeatability as compared to hand-layup parts. Automated fiber placement (AFP) is one such process in which structures or parts are built by adding bands of prescribed number of tows or slit-tape with prescribed width using robotic machine heads over 3D surfaces following prescribed paths. Despite the improved accuracy, different types of defects or manufacturing features arise during fabrication. These defects can be due to geometrical features, materials, and process planning parameters and are detected in the form of wrinkling, tow twist, tow folding, …

Chemical Sensing In Harsh Environments By Multivariate Optical Computing, Christopher Michael Jones Jan 2017

Chemical Sensing In Harsh Environments By Multivariate Optical Computing, Christopher Michael Jones

Theses and Dissertations

Multivariate optical computing (MOC) is a compressive sensing technique for which an analyte concentration is detected in an interfering mixture by direct detector output. The detector measures the dot product of a linear regression vector with a sample spectrum, as an analog optical computation. The computation is accomplished with the multivariate optical element (MOE), to which the optical regression vector is encoded as a transmission pattern. As a spectrum of light emanates from a sample and passes through the MOE, the dot product naturally occurs when light strikes the detector. The MOC platform allows a simple, robust, and direct measurement …
