Design And Assessment Of A Low-Cost, Autonomous, Methane-Ebullition Measurement Apparatus (Mema), Francesca Frattaroli Jan 2017

Design And Assessment Of A Low-Cost, Autonomous, Methane-Ebullition Measurement Apparatus (Mema), Francesca Frattaroli

University Honors Theses

Water reservoirs are increasingly recognized as a significant anthropogenic source of methane (CH4) production and emissions, CH4 being the second most prevalent greenhouse gas (GHG) after CO2. The dominant emission pathway for CH4 in lacustrine environments is ebullition (bubbling). A survey of current ebullition measurement methods reveals a technology gap; the ability to measure ebullition rates and CH4 content simultaneously and affordably with high temporal and spatial resolution is not currently available. Characterizing and modeling methane ebullition in water reservoirs is key to quantifying lacustrine methane emissions and providing a basis for potential …

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

We present 34 profiles of radon‐deficit from the ice‐ocean boundary layer of the Beaufort Sea. Including these 34, there are presently 58 published radon‐deficit estimates of air‐sea gas transfer velocity (k) in the Arctic Ocean; 52 of these estimates were derived from water covered by 10% sea ice or more. The average value of k collected since 2011 is 4.0 ± 1.2 m d−1. This exceeds the quadratic wind speed prediction of weighted kws = 2.85 m d−1 with mean‐weighted wind speed of 6.4 m s−1. We show how ice cover changes …

Recent increases in emergent infectious diseases have raised concerns about the sustainability of some marine species. The complexity and expense of studying diseases in marine systems often dictate that conservation and management decisions are made without quantitative data on population-level impacts of disease. Mark-recapture is a powerful, underutilized, tool for calculating impacts of disease on population size and structure, even in the absence of etiological information. We applied logistic regression models to mark-recapture data to obtain estimates of disease-associated mortality rates in three commercially important marine species: snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) in Newfoundland, Canada, that experience sporadic epizootics …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

[First Paragraph]

Coral reefs throughout the world are facing the consequences of large-scale changes in Earth’s climate. In particular, ocean warming is leading to frequent coral bleaching, which is threatening the long-term stability of coral reefs. Coral bleaching is a stress response that results in the disassociation of the mutualistic symbioses (i.e., dysbiosis) between corals and their endosymbiotic algae (Symbiodinium spp.). In the past two decades, there have been four substantial bleaching events, which have affected large geographic areas across the globe, including the worst recorded bleaching event on the Great Barrier Reef in 2016 (Berkelmans et al. 2004; Eakin …

Computationally Inexpensive Pv System Model As A Simulation Agent For Large Scale Integration Analysis, Colin Levis, Martin Hill Jan 2017

Computationally Inexpensive Pv System Model As A Simulation Agent For Large Scale Integration Analysis, Colin Levis, Martin Hill

Conference Papers

In recent years the proliferation of renewable energy systems, especially photovoltaic (PV), generating into the low voltage (LV) distribution network has been increasing and these systems are poised to contribute a significant portion of the energy supply. This poses a challenge for maintaining grid stability, which is traditionally reliant on large centralised synchronous machines. For large-scale integration of distributed PV generation, PV systems must be capable of providing grid support services (GSS) emulating the traditional system. This paper presents an accurate, reduced order, computationally inexpensive agent based model (ABM) of a three-phase PV inverter that will provide a platform for …

Robot Lives Matter?, Christopher Boolukos (Class Of 2017) Jan 2017

Robot Lives Matter?, Christopher Boolukos (Class Of 2017)

Writing Across the Curriculum

It’s 2016 and slavery is still a brutal reality around the world and a crime against humanity. The human race has never been shy when it comes to enslaving fellow human beings, so with progress in robotics and AI, we will soon be able to enslave robots to do our bidding. This poses a serious moral dilemma as to what rights such entities would possess and what responsibility we have, if any, on how we use them in society. Should it make any difference whether an entity is made of silicon or carbon, or whether its brain uses semi-conductors or …

Co2 Capture From Flue Gas By A Psa Process Using A Novel Structured Adsorbent, Nima Mohammadi

Theses and Dissertations

First adsorption equilibrium isotherms for N2, O2, Ar and CO2 on zeolite 13X were measured at three temperatures (25, 50, 75 °C) and pressures up to 110 kPa with a volumetric method and validated by also measuring the same isotherms with a gravimetric system.

Then a comprehensive 2-D mathematical model was developed to study the fundamentals of adsorption processes in parallel channel structured adsorbents. The results clearly indicated that under studied circumstances the plug flow condition can be assumed and therefore the system is not subject to premature breakthrough.

The pressure drop of corrugated structured adsorbents with narrow triangular channels …

Unconditionally Energy Stable Numerical Schemes For Hydrodynamics Coupled Fluids Systems, Alexander Yuryevich Brylev

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis consists of two parts. In the first part we propose several second order in time, fully discrete, linear and nonlinear numerical schemes to solve the phase-field model of two-phase incompressible flows in the framework of finite element method. The schemes are based on the second order Crank-Nicolson method for time disretizations, projection method for Navier-Stokes equations, as well as several implicit-explicit treatments for phase-field equations. The energy stability, solvability, and uniqueness for numerical solutions of proposed schemes are further proved. Ample numerical experiments are performed to validate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed schemes thereafter.

In the …

Cable Health Monitoring System Built Into Power Converter Using Time Domain Reflectometry, Hossein Baninajar

Theses and Dissertations

Aging cables are a critical reliability concern for many electrical systems. Cables run over long distances, are often exposed to harsh environments and are intended to work for several decades. Cable faults can be a serious problem because cables are usually hard to repair or replace. Condition based maintenance is a popular approach that provides high reliability and low maintenance cost at the same time. This is a non-destructive method that collects information about the health condition of the cable under test without causing any potential damage.

Nowadays, in several applications power cables are connected to power converters and it …

Numerical Analysis Of Phase Change, Heat Transfer And Fluid Flow Within Miniature Heat Pipes, Mehdi Famouri Jan 2017

Numerical Analysis Of Phase Change, Heat Transfer And Fluid Flow Within Miniature Heat Pipes, Mehdi Famouri

Theses and Dissertations

Heat pipes with broad applications in thermal systems have the ability to provide effective heat transport with minimal losses in over reasonable distances due to their passive nature. Their exceptional flexibility, simple fabrication, and easy control, not to mention, all without any external pumping power make them especially attractive in electronics cooling. Heat pipe development is motivated to overcome the need to presumably manage thermal dissipation in progressively compressed and higher-density microelectronic components, while preserving the components temperatures to specification.

Computation of flow and heat transfer in a heat pipe is complicated by the strong coupling among the velocity, pressure …
