Plasmonic Nanoparticle Integration On Fiber Optic: Role Of Organic Linker And Functionalization Length In Refractive Index Sensing, Shela Ilmiyah, Mohamad Syahadi, Muflikhah Muflikhah, Yuwana Pradana, Zainul Arifin Iman Supardi, Iwan Darmadi, Lia Aprilia

Makara Journal of Science

Nanoplasmonic fiber optic sensors leverage the optical fiber’s inherent compactness and surface sensitivity via evanescent-field interactions with the localized surface plasmon resonance of the metallic nanoparticles. One of the popular approaches is self-assembly owing to its relatively low cost. Despite its low cost, the self-assembly technique has low reproducibility and exhibits low sensitivity because of low nanoplasmonic coverage on the fiber optic surface. In this study, several fabrication techniques were explored to assess the refractive index sensitivity by comparing three common organosilanes, i.e., (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), (3-Aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane, and (3-Mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane. Comparative analyses assessed the anchoring efficiency of the three silanes, sensor reproducibility, …

Makara Journal of Science

Water contamination from heavy metals, such as Cu(II) ions, poses severe threats to human health and the environment. This necessitates the development of efficient and eco-friendly treatment methods. In this study, a magnetite–biochar composite (MBC) was developed as an effective adsorbent for reducing Cu(II) ions from liquid waste. Biochar was produced through the pyrolysis of water hyacinth at 500 °C, while magnetite was synthesized using FeSO₄·7H₂O and FeCl₃·6H₂O with molar ratio of 1:2. The MBC was formed using a co-precipitation method and characterized by Fourier transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, and vibration sample magnetometer instruments. FTIR analysis …

Einstein Health Papers

Identifying noninvasive measures to assess intravascular volume status and risk stratify patients with pulmonary hypertension (PH) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) is needed. We assessed the predictive value of estimated plasma volume status (ePVS) using the Strauss-derived Duarte formula in PH-CKD patients. This single-center retrospective cohort analysis included patients with PH and CKD Stage 3b (CKD3b), Stage 4 (CKD4), or Stage 5 (CKD5) who underwent right heart catheterization from 2018 to 2023. Patients were categorized into low ePVS (< 6.2) and high ePVS (≥ 6.2) using Youden's J statistics. We used the Cox-proportional hazards model, adjusting for age, sex, and body mass index, to investigate the association between …

Journal of Electrochemistry

The unavailability of high-performance and cost-effective electrocatalysts has impeded the large-scale deployment of alkaline water electrolyzers. Professor Zidong Wei’s group has focused on resolving critical challenges in industrial alkaline electrolysis, particularly elucidating hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) mechanisms while addressing the persistent activity-stability trade-off. This review summarizes their decade-long progress in developing advanced electrodes, analyzing the origins of sluggish alkaline HER kinetics and OER stability limitations. Professor Wei proposes a unifying “12345 Principle” as an optimization framework. For HER electrocatalysts, they have identified that metal/metal oxide interfaces create synergistic “chimney effect” and “local electric field enhancement effect”, enhancing selective …

Journal of Electrochemistry

Development of robust electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in a seawater electrolyte is the key to realize seawater electrolyte-based zinc-air batteries (SZABs). Herein, constructing a local electric field coupled with chloride ions (Cl−) fixation strategy in dual single-atom catalysts (DSACs) was proposed, and the resultant catalyst delivered considerable ORR performance in a seawater electrolyte, with a high half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.868 V and a good maximum power density (Pmax) of 182 mW·cm−2 in the assembled SZABs, much higher than those of the Pt/C catalyst (E1/2: 0.846 V; Pmax: 150 mW·cm−2 …

Bridging Materials And Energy Storage Mechanisms In Zn-I2 Batteries, Rong-Qi Liu, Wen-Shuo Shang, Jin-Tao Zhang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Zinc-iodine (Zn-I2) batteries have emerged as a compelling candidate for large-scale energy storage, driven by the growing demand for safe, cost-effective, and sustainable alternatives to conventional systems. Benefiting from the inherent advantages of aqueous electrolytes and zinc metal anodes, including high ionic conductivity, low flammability, natural abundance, and high volumetric capacity, Zn-I2 batteries offer significant potential for grid-level deployment. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent progress in three critical domains: positive-electrode engineering, zinc anode stabilization, and in situ characterization methods. On the cathode side, anchoring iodine to conductive matrices effectively mitigates polyiodide shuttling and enhances …

Significantly Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction Activity In Co-N-C Catalysts Through Synergistic Boron Doping, Chang Lan, Jing-Sen Bai, Xin Guan, Shuo Wang, Nan-Shu Zhang, Yu-Qing Cheng, Jin-Jing Tao, Yu-Yi Chu, Mei-Ling Xiao, Chang-Peng Liu, Wei Xing

Journal of Electrochemistry

The weak adsorption energy of oxygen-containing intermediates on Co center leads to a considerable performance disparity between Co-N-C and costly Pt benchmark in catalyzing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, we strategically engineer the active site structure of Co-N-C via B substitution, which is accomplished by the pyrolysis of ammonium borate. During this process, the in-situ generated NH3 gas plays a critical role in creating surface defects and boron atoms substituting nitrogen atoms in the carbon structure. The well-designed CoB1N3 active site endows Co with higher charge density and stronger adsorption energy toward oxygen species, …

Scaling Symmetry Of The Hodgkin-Huxley Mathematical Model, Vladimir Valerievich Galanin

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

A computational method based on the application of a scaling transformation to the Hodgkin-Huxley mathematical model of the biological neuron and its generalizations to the case of various neural systems is proposed. The method makes it possible: 1) to obtain invariants of the scaling transformation of the Hodgkin-Huxley model; 2) to find self-similarity regions corresponding to the modes of neural activity; 3) to determine the conditions for the similarity of models of various types of biological neurons; 4) to reduce the order of the system of differential equations of the Hodgkin-Huxley model for neural systems with synchronous activity. The capabilities …

Multiscale Theory Of Dislocation Plasticity, Alexander Umantsev Sep 2025

Multiscale Theory Of Dislocation Plasticity, Alexander Umantsev

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Motion of dislocations is a common mechanism of plasticity in many materials. Dislocationmediated deformation is essentially an inhomogeneous process, which is manifest in the formation of slip lines and complicated cell wall structures. An adequate description of these processes is an important goal of Materials Theory, which aims to describe the mechanical properties of materials and their reliability in service. This publication advances the thermodynamically consistent theory of dislocation-mediated plasticity to include the spatial gradients of the independent variables. We conducted the renormalization group scaling analysis of deformation and obtained the low-energy dislocation structures as ordinary solutions of the equilibrium …

Collective Dominance Under Scrutiny: Closing The Enforcement Gap Or Complicating Eu Competition Policy?, Miroslava Marinova Sep 2025

Collective Dominance Under Scrutiny: Closing The Enforcement Gap Or Complicating Eu Competition Policy?, Miroslava Marinova

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

This paper examines the European Commission’s Draft Guidelines on Article 102 TFEU, focusing on their treatment of collective dominance in oligopolistic markets. While the Guidelines adopt a structured framework derived from merger control, they fail to address a key challenge specific to Article 102: the need for clear evidentiary standards in retrospective enforcement. The paper argues that parallel conduct by independent firms can, in certain cases, serve as evidence of collective dominance where such behaviour is not rational absent joint market power. However, the Draft Guidelines offer little guidance on how to integrate such conduct into the dominance analysis. This …

Optimal Estimation In A Multicointegrated System, Igor Kheifets, Peter C.B. Phillips Sep 2025

Optimal Estimation In A Multicointegrated System, Igor Kheifets, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Optimal estimation is explored in long run relations that are modeled within a semiparametric triangular multicointegrated system. In nonsingular cointegrated systems, where there is no multicointegration, optimal estimation is well understood (Phillips, 1991a). This paper establishes corresponding optimal results for singular systems, thereby accommodating a wide class of multicointegrated nonstationary time series with nonparametric transient dynamics. The optimality and sub-optimality of existing estimators are considered and new optimal estimators of both the cointegrating and multicointegrating coefficients are introduced that are based on spectral regression.

Early-Life Exposure To Organic Chemical Pollutants As Assessed In Primary Teeth And Cardiometabolic Risk In Mexican American Children: A Pilot Study, Vidya S. Farook, Feroz Akhtar, Rector Arya, Alice Yau, Srinivas Mummidi, Juan Lopez Alvarenga, Alvaro Diaz-Badillo, Roy G. Resendez, John Blangero

Human Genetics Publications

Early-life exposure to organic chemicals (OCs) may influence childhood obesity and associated cardiometabolic risk. These conditions have been shown to disproportionately affect minority populations such as Mexican Americans (MAs). However, information on the impact of organic chemicals on cardiometabolic risk in MA children is limited. Therefore, we conducted a pilot study to assess the extent to which exposure to organic chemicals influences cardiometabolic traits (CMTs) in MA children. We recalled 25 children from a previous study and collected 25 primary teeth from them. Chemical analyses of the teeth were performed using established protocols. Target analytes included acetaminophen (APAP); 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy), …

Llm-Gaode: Large-Language-Model Augmented Neural Ordinary Differential Equation Network For Video Nystagmography Classification, Shuo Li

Faculty Scholarship

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a common type of vertigo with complex etiologies, is traditionally diagnosed using video nystagmography (VNG). Current automated methods lack diagnostic precision owing to subjective interpretation of eye movement characteristics. To address these challenges, we introduce a large language model-augmented Gram-based attentive neural ordinary differential equation (LLM-GAODE), an innovative and data-driven framework integrating eye-tracking technology with a Gram-based attention mechanism and a neural ordinary differential equation network to improve BPPV classification. Furthermore, when the neural network exhibits low confidence in its predictions, an LLM can supplement the process with advanced reasoning in natural language. LLM-GAODE was …

Converse Of Ptolemy’S Theorem, Hidefumi Katsuura Sep 2025

Converse Of Ptolemy’S Theorem, Hidefumi Katsuura

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

In The Almagest, we found the original Ptolemy’s theorem and its proof, and we compared it to “Ptolemy’s theorem” written in two modern geometry textbooks. They are different in that the new ones include the “converse” of the original one. We noticed the hypothesis of the “converse” can be interpreted in two ways. Using this as our motivation, we establish a new theorem related to Ptolemy’s theorem in this note as follows: If four distinct points A, B, C, D are given in the three-dimensional space so that ABC is a triangle, and if |AB||CD|+|AD||BC|=|AC||BD|, then the points A, B, …

Predicting The Chloride Penetration Of Sustainable Marine Concrete Using Data-Driven And Multiphysics Frameworks, Joya Rani Das, Taihao Han, Jie Huang, Kamal H. Khayat, Aditya Kumar

C3 Symposium 2025

Chloride penetration in sustainable reinforced concrete (RC) is a critical parameter for predicting and preventing infrastructure failure, particularly for marine applications. However, replicating natural environments and testing in actual infrastructure is challenging, making it difficult to accurately measure chloride concentration in RC. Additionally, the complexity of concrete mixture designs and environmental parameters hinders the development of a universal model to predict chloride concentration at various concrete depths. This study develops a data-driven approach to predict chloride concentrations at different depths and chloride diffusion coefficients in marine RC made with common supplementary cementitious materials (e.g. fly ash, slag, etc.) under varied …

A Mathematical Model For Co2 Capture Via Mineral Carbonation Using Hydrated Lime, Natalia Vidal De La Peña, Grégoire Léonard, Dominique Toye Sep 2025

A Mathematical Model For Co2 Capture Via Mineral Carbonation Using Hydrated Lime, Natalia Vidal De La Peña, Grégoire Léonard, Dominique Toye

C3 Symposium 2025

The construction sector contributes to approximately 37% of global GHG emissions. To mitigate this impact, this study develops a mathematical model to analyze CO2 capture via hydrated lime carbonation. The model integrates reaction kinetics, diffusion and heat balance, considering the effects of liquid water saturation, the influence of porosity on diffusion and the heat generated by both the reaction and water evaporation. For a specific case, the carbonation front and temperature gradient along the reactor are analyzed. Then, the model is validated, demonstrating promising results for optimizing future carbonation processes.

X-Ray Microcalorimeter Observations Of High-Mass X-Ray Binaries With The Resolve Instrument Onboard Xrism, Pragati Pradhan, Masahiro Tsujimoto

Publications

The X-ray Imaging and Spectrometer Mission (XRISM) was put into orbit successfully in September 2023. Resolve, one of the scientific instruments onboard XRISM, hosts an X-ray spectrometer based on X-ray microcalorimetery technology. It excels in high spectral resolution, a large throughput, a large bandpass, low background, and good timing accuracy. These properties are suited to bring new insights especially in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXB). We describe these unique features of Resolve and present initial highlights of two HMXB sources.

Publications

The Be X-ray binary EXO 2030+375 went through its third recorded giant outburst from June 2021 to early 2022. We present the results of both spectral and timing analysis based on NICER monitoring, covering the 2−10 keV flux range from 20 to 310 mCrab. Dense monitoring with observations carried out about every second day and a total exposure time of ∼160 ks allowed us to closely track the source evolution over the outburst. Changes in the spectral shape and pulse profiles showed a stable luminosity dependence during the rise and decline. The same type of dependence has been seen in …

Publications

When accreting X-ray pulsars (XRPs) undergo bright X-ray outbursts, their luminosity-dependent spectral and timing features can be analyzed in detail. The XRP GRO J1750-27 recently underwent one such episode, during which it was observed with NuSTAR and monitored with NICER. Such a data set is rarely available, as it samples the outburst over more than 1 month at a luminosity that is always exceeding ∼5 × 1037 erg s−1 . This value is larger than the typical critical luminosity value, where a radiative shock is formed above the surface of the neutron star. Our data analysis of the joint spectra …

Energy Statistic-Based Goodness-Of-Fit Test For The Lindley Distribution With Application To Lifetime Data, Joseph Njuki, Ryan Avallone

Mathematics and Statistics

In this article, we propose a goodness-of-fit test for a one-parameter Lindley distribution based on energy statistics. The Lindley distribution has been widely used in reliability studies and survival analysis, especially in applied sciences. The proposed test procedure is simple and more powerful against general alternatives. Under different settings, Monte Carlo simulations show that the proposed test is able to be well controlled for any given nominal levels. In terms of power, the proposed test outperforms other existing similar methods in different settings. We then apply the proposed test to real-life datasets to demonstrate its competitiveness and usefulness.

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

A diverse array of thalli, fruiting bodies, spores, and other fungal structures has been observed in palynological samples collected from the sedimentary sequence MJR-11, drilled in the Jangareddygudem area of the Chintalapudi subbasin, Andhra Pradesh, southern India. The sedimentary sequence is dated to the Kimmeridgian–early Albian, based on palynology. However, the focus of the present work is on the Early Cretaceous (Berriasian–early Albian). A well-developed and diverse fungal assemblage consistently occurred throughout most of the succession, together with predominant conifer pollen grains and highly diversified pteridophytic and bryophytic spores. Furthermore, the recorded palynomorphs suggest deposition under both continental and marine …
