Healthcare Reform In Latino Rhode Island: Perspectives Of Spanish Speakers And Insurance Navigators, Haiyan Ramírez Batlle, Roberta E. Goldman, Amed Logroño, Joseph A. Diaz Jan 2017

Healthcare Reform In Latino Rhode Island: Perspectives Of Spanish Speakers And Insurance Navigators, Haiyan Ramírez Batlle, Roberta E. Goldman, Amed Logroño, Joseph A. Diaz

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Latinos have the highest uninsurance rates of any ethnic or racial group in the US despite recent health insurance expansion reform. In addition to immigration and language barriers, health literacy and attitudes may impact coverage disparities. Focus groups with Spanish-speaking community members and semi-structured interviews with health insurance navigators were conducted to explore knowledge, awareness, and attitudes towards healthcare reform among Latinos in Rhode Island. Sessions were audio recorded, transcribed, and analyzed employing standard qualitative methods. Thirty-two focus group participants and six navigators were enrolled in the study. Spanish-speaking participants demonstrated limited knowledge of the cost implications of the Medicaid …

Rethinking Mono-Sensory, Implicational Approaches To Ideophones In Pastaza Quichua, Janis B. Nuckolls, Sydney Jensen, Emily Peterson, Matthew Millar

Faculty Publications

This paper will evaluate a claim about a possible areal bias for the semantic typolgies of ideohone systems. According to this claim, ideophone systems of the Americas are mainly dedicatied to encoding sound and motion, while for Africa and Asia, they cover a broader range of sensory imagery , including visual patterns, textures, and cognitive states. Additionally, and implicational hieracry for ideophone systems' se,amtics has been posted. We demonstrate with data from Pasta Quichua, that ideophones' semantics span the full range of senory and cognitive possibilities. Further, the mono-sensory schematization of ideophones' semantics make the implicational hierarchy problematic as presently …

Robot Perception Errors And Human Resolution Strategies In Situated Human-Robot Dialogue, Niels Schütte, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher Jan 2017

Robot Perception Errors And Human Resolution Strategies In Situated Human-Robot Dialogue, Niels Schütte, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher

Articles

Errors in visual perception may cause problems in situated dialogues. We investigated this problem through an experiment in which human participants interacted through a natural language dialogue interface with a simulated robot. We introduced errors into the robot’s perception, and observed the resulting problems in the dialogues and their resolutions. We then introduced different methods for the user to request information about the robot’s understanding of the environment. We quantify the impact of perception errors on the dialogues, and investigate resolution attempts by users at a structural level and at the level of referring expressions.

Out In "The Numbers": Youth And Gang Violence Initiatives And Uneven Development In Portland's Periphery, Dirk Kinsey Jan 2017

Out In "The Numbers": Youth And Gang Violence Initiatives And Uneven Development In Portland's Periphery, Dirk Kinsey

Dissertations and Theses

Incidence of youth and gang violence in the Portland, Oregon metro area has increased dramatically over the past five years. This violence has recently become more spatially diffuse, shifting outwards from gentrified, inner city neighborhoods, towards the city's periphery. These incidents exist within the context of a shifting regional political economy, characterized by a process of gentrification associated displacement and growing, and distinctly racialized and spatialized, inequalities. While gang researchers have long argued a corollary between the emergence of gangs and economically and culturally polarized urban landscapes, the ongoing suburbanization of poverty in American cities suggests a new landscape of …

Aloysius Pieris’S Asian Liberation Theology And Its Challenges To The Church’S Mission In Asia, Norlan H. Julia Jan 2017

Aloysius Pieris’S Asian Liberation Theology And Its Challenges To The Church’S Mission In Asia, Norlan H. Julia

Landas

This article examines the theological contributions of Sri Lankan Jesuit Aloysius Pieris and their profound implications for the Church's identity and mission in Asia. Julia highlights how Pieris critiques deep-seated dualisms within traditional Christian practice—such as the dichotomies between liturgy, spirituality, and secular action. By advocating for a synthesis centered on the "liturgy of life" and an Asian Christology, Pieris challenges local churches to undergo a "double baptism" in the Jordan of Asian religiosity and the Calvary of systemic poverty. Ultimately, the paper calls for a transformative pastoral shift toward authentic dialogue and total solidarity with the marginalized.

Latina Women In The United States: Child Care Preferences And Arrangements, Laura Satkowski Ph.D., Rumeli Banik Ph.D., Sonia Roubeni M.A. Jan 2017

Latina Women In The United States: Child Care Preferences And Arrangements, Laura Satkowski Ph.D., Rumeli Banik Ph.D., Sonia Roubeni M.A.

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Formal child care has been associated with myriad benefits for children, such as improvements in cognitive development and language skills. Immigrant children may derive unique benefits from formal child care, as research has also confirmed that center-based child care is associated with gains in English language proficiency and school readiness. However, immigrant families are less likely than nonimmigrant families to enroll their children in formal child care. Considering the growing immigrant population in the US—a large proportion of which is Latino—more research is needed to understand the child care decision-making processes of immigrant Latino families. The current study examined the …

Behavioral Economics And Developmental Science: A New Framework To Support Early Childhood Interventions, Lisa Gennetian, Matthew Darling, J Lawrence Aber Jan 2017

Behavioral Economics And Developmental Science: A New Framework To Support Early Childhood Interventions, Lisa Gennetian, Matthew Darling, J Lawrence Aber

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Public policies have actively responded to an emergent social and neuroscientific evidence base documenting the benefits of targeting services to children during the earliest period of their development. But problems of low utilization, inconsistent participation, and low retention continue to present themselves as challenges. Although most interventions recognize and address structural and psycho-social barriers to parent’s engagement, few take seriously the decision making roles of parents. Using insights from the behavioral sciences, we revisit assumptions about the presumed behavior of parents in a developmental context. We then describe ways in which this framework informs features of interventions that can be …

Finding The Experts In The Crowd: Validity And Reliability Of Crowdsourced Measures Of Children’S Gradient Speech Contrasts, Daphna Harel, Elaine Hitchcock, Daniel Szeredi, José Ortiz, Tara Mcallister Byun Jan 2017

Finding The Experts In The Crowd: Validity And Reliability Of Crowdsourced Measures Of Children’S Gradient Speech Contrasts, Daphna Harel, Elaine Hitchcock, Daniel Szeredi, José Ortiz, Tara Mcallister Byun

Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Perceptual ratings aggregated across multiple nonexpert listeners can be used to measure covert contrast in child speech. Online crowdsourcing provides access to a large pool of raters, but for practical purposes, researchers may wish to use smaller samples. The ratings obtained from these smaller samples may not maintain the high levels of validity seen in larger samples. This study aims to measure the validity and reliability of crowdsourced continuous ratings of child speech, obtained through Visual Analog Scaling, and to identify ways to improve these measurements. We first assess overall validity and interrater reliability for measurements obtained from a large …

Pedagogies Across Borders: Perspectives From Teaching Staff And Students Engaged With Transnational Programmes In Hong Kong., Pj Magne, O Poverjuc, T Heffernan

Plymouth Institute of Education

While there is a continuing growth in the demand for transnational programmes, the pedagogy of transnational education (TNE) remains largely under-researched. In an attempt to understand the nature of the transnational classroom and the implications for the provider of TNE, this paper explores the experiences of staff and students on programmes provided by a UK university in Hong Kong. Findings suggest that the transnational classroom is a complex and demanding environment as it entails multiple contexts, cultures, participants, roles and modes of delivery. This study proposes a range of strategies that aim to develop a shared vision on partnership and …

Visualizing Incongruity: Visual Data Mining Strategies For Modeling Humor In Text, Andrew Smigaj Jan 2017

Visualizing Incongruity: Visual Data Mining Strategies For Modeling Humor In Text, Andrew Smigaj

All Graduate Projects

The goal of this project is to investigate the use of visual data mining to model verbal humor. We explored various means of text visualization to identify key featrues of garden path jokes as compared with non jokes. With garden path jokes one interpretation is established in the setup but new information indicating some alternative interpretation triggers some resolution process leading to a new interpretation. For this project we visualize text in three novel ways, assisted by some web mining to build an informal ontology, that allow us to see the differences between garden path jokes and non jokes of …

Presenting The Extremely Difficult Past: Günther Domenig’S Documentation Center Of The National Socialist Party Rally Grounds, Nuremberg, Germany, Rumiko Handa

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Buildings have a way of bringing the past into the present. This is important because experiences of the past often constitute impactful moments in everyday lives and allow a contemplation of existential meaning. It is an aspect often neglected by architectural professionals and critics because it lies outside the Vitruvian triad of aesthetic, functional, and structural virtues. It goes without saying that a building’s presentation of the past is ontological. In other words, individual perceptions of a building are subjective, and the building’s objective traits or histories do not guarantee that it will turn into a place of memory for …

Border Insecurity: Reading Transnational Environments In Jim Lynch’S Border Songs, Jenny Kerber Jan 2017

Border Insecurity: Reading Transnational Environments In Jim Lynch’S Border Songs, Jenny Kerber

English and Film Studies Faculty Publications

This article applies an eco-critical approach to contemporary American fiction about the Canada-US border, examining Jim Lynch’s portrayal of the British Columbia-Washington borderlands in his 2009 novel Border Songs. It argues that studying transnational environmental actors in border texts—in this case, marijuana, human migrants, and migratory birds—helps illuminate the contingency of political boundaries, problems of scale, and discourses of risk and security in cross-border regions after 9/11. Further, it suggests that widening the analysis of trans-border activity to include environmental phenomena productively troubles concepts of nature and regional belonging in an era of climate change and economic globalization.

Using Relationship Management To Legitimate The Monarchy: An Analysis Of The Reign Of King Juan Carlos I Of Spain, César García Jan 2017

Using Relationship Management To Legitimate The Monarchy: An Analysis Of The Reign Of King Juan Carlos I Of Spain, César García

Global Media Journal México

Abstract This article explores the management of relationships by King Juan Carlos I of Spain to legitimate the monarchy as an institution and build a new democracy after Franco’s death in 1975. The high level of public support during most of his reign shows there is a correlation between good relationship management and the loyalty of the subjects. Only when some basic relationship management principles of mutual benefit, such as trust and openness with his subjects, were violated the level of support of Juan Carlos I, and the monarchy as an institution started to decline. Nonetheless, the value of relationship …

Black Activist Mothering: Teach Me About What Teaches You, Jacqueline Roebuck Sakho- Jan 2017

Black Activist Mothering: Teach Me About What Teaches You, Jacqueline Roebuck Sakho-

Faculty Publications

This work defines Black activist mothering as a position of strength, courage, and brilliance that requires being in conversation with elders in order to make meaning of the present. Told as a conversation between the elders, the author enacts important cultural traditions that demonstrate the significance of intergenerational conversations in the process of becoming a mother, an activist, and an educational leader. The theoretical framework bridges the gap between Black mothering, leadership, and narrative all the while addressing educational inequities without compromising identity, culture, and womanhood. In the end, the piece demonstrates the author’s ability to move in and out …

Bilingual Spanish Vowels: The Case Of Heritage Speakers, Megan E. Solon, Nyssa Knarvik, Joshua Declerck Jan 2017

Bilingual Spanish Vowels: The Case Of Heritage Speakers, Megan E. Solon, Nyssa Knarvik, Joshua Declerck

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Other Graduate Student Scholarship

Previous research on heritage Spanish vowel production has revealed consistent and systematic differences—including asymmetry in the vowel space, condensing and fronting of back vowels, and reduction and centralization of unstressed vowels—as compared to traditional descriptions of the monolingual Spanish vowel triangle. The present study takes another look at heritage Spanish vowels (both quality and quantity), using a group of “homeland” native Spanish-speaking late Spanish-English bilinguals for comparison purposes. Data for both groups were collected via a dyadic, meaning-focused task. Results revealed significant differences between heritage and homeland groups in front and mid-vowel quality, but no differences in vowel quantity. Additionally, …
