Evaluative Reactions To Nonnative Spanish, Nyssa Knarvik, Cecily Corbett Jan 2017

Evaluative Reactions To Nonnative Spanish, Nyssa Knarvik, Cecily Corbett

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Other Graduate Student Scholarship

This study investigates whether there is a relationship between the native Spanish “Rater” evaluative reactions of Spanish spoken by second-language learners, called “Talkers,” based on the distance of their first language from Spanish. The Talkers’ first languages are grouped by distance from Spanish: close (Brazilian Portuguese and French), mid (Serbian and Polish), and far (Korean and Chinese). The Raters (n=50) are played recordings of the six Talkers reading the same story in Spanish and they are asked to rate each Talker on a 7-point Likert scale in 15 different categories (e.g. unintelligent/intelligent, easy/difficult to understand, and outgoing/shy). Results show statistically …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This literature review with application thesis explores the prevalence of anxiety in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and dives into differentiating anxiety symptoms from ASD symptoms and provides tools for teachers to help reduce anxiety in the classroom. There is a high percentage of individuals with ASD that have co-occurring anxiety disorders, significantly impacting their everyday lives. Many characteristics of ASD present similarly to anxiety symptoms therefore, making it more difficult to differentiate between the two disorders. This paper highlights different symptoms, factors contributing to diagnosis, and treatment options for children and adolescents with ASD and anxiety. A review …

Malts: Mucho Acquisition Of Language By Teaching With Songs, Matthew J. Hanson

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fluency in a foreign language (FL) increases when curriculum concentrates on the most common and frequent vocabulary. The following research hypothesizes that songs in the FL can replace curriculum textbooks when combined with storytelling since they contain the most common vocabulary and grammatical structures required for FL communication. This research outlines studies documenting the use of songs in the FL classroom, and includes a 10-week curriculum demonstrating that songs have the potential to change FL curriculum when they are employed consistently and in partnership with storytelling.

An Analysis On The Research In Relation To The Methodology Of Comprehensible Input, Brenna K. Hoeg

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was threefold. First, it examined what research concludes concerning the best ways to use the Comprehensive Input (CI) methodology to teach grammar, vocabulary, literacy, and culture. Second, it explored and evaluated the five benefits to teaching with CI (increases vocabulary retention, increases cultural understanding, increases motivation, personalizes learning and uses multiple modalities). Finally, this thesis assesses what research has concluded to be the drawbacks of CI (lack of substantial sample size in research, lack of resources, misconceptions associated towards CI, and inconsistent data within CI research). In alignment with research, this thesis concludes that providing …

Countertransference As Koinonia, Karin A. Craven Jan 2017

Countertransference As Koinonia, Karin A. Craven

Doctor of Philosophy Theses

This thesis inquires after the lived-through experience of community in the congregation by the pastoral leader. It is predicated upon the multiple self whose plurality is understood through psychoanalytical and postcolonial theories as well as by developmental processes illumined by interpersonal neurobiology. The phenomenological inquiry into one pastor’s experience of community in the congregation yielded in vivo themes – movement, joy, and open; connect, conflict, and centering; table, hospitality, love, and diversity -- that were understood broadly from the wondering perspective of desire. Closer theoretical analysis of these in vivo themes from theological, psychological, and interpersonal neurobiological conceptual categories was …

Educators’ Beliefs About Appropriate Pedagogical Models For Spanish-Speaking Ells Who Differ In Home-Language And English-Language Literacy Abilities, Audrey Figueroa Murphy, Bruce Torff, David Sessions

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

Survey research (n = 366) examined educators’ beliefs about the efficacy of five pedagogical models (English as a second language (ESL) self-contained, ESL push-in, ESL pullout, bilingual, and dual language) for English language learners who differ in English literacy proficiency and home-language abilities (delimited to Spanish in this research). Dual language was preferred when students have high English proficiency; this effect was extremely strong for students who are also proficient in Spanish, and moderate when students’ Spanish skills are low. Bilingual education was moderately favored when English is low and Spanish is high. ESL self-contained was moderately favored when students …

By listening carefully to her voice in her process …

Seeing Academically Marginalized Students’ Multimodal Designs From A Position Of Strength, Kate T. Anderson, Olivia G. Stewart, Dani Kachorsky Jan 2017

Seeing Academically Marginalized Students’ Multimodal Designs From A Position Of Strength, Kate T. Anderson, Olivia G. Stewart, Dani Kachorsky

Education Specialties Faculty Publications

This article examines multimodal texts created by a cohort of academically marginalized secondary school students in Singapore as part of a language arts unit on persuasive composition. Using an interpretivist qualitative approach, we examine students’ multimodal designs to highlight opportunities presented for expanding literacy practices traditionally not often available to lower-tracked students. Findings highlight the authorial stances and rhetorical force that this cohort of students employed in their multimodal designs, despite lack of regular opportunities to author texts and a schooling history of low expectations. We echo arguments for the importance of providing all students with opportunities to take positions …

Epidemiological Placism In Public Health Emergencies: Ebola In Two Dallas Neighborhoods, Carolyn Smith-Morris Jan 2017

Epidemiological Placism In Public Health Emergencies: Ebola In Two Dallas Neighborhoods, Carolyn Smith-Morris

Anthropology Research

Super-diverse cities face distinctive challenges during infectious disease outbreaks. For refugee and immigrant groups from epidemic source locations, identities of place blend with epidemiological logics in convoluted ways during these crises. This research investigated the relationships of place and stigma during the Dallas Ebola crisis. Ethnographic results illustrate how Africanness, more than neighborhood stigma, informed Dallas residents’ experience of stigma. The problems of place-based stigma, the imprecision of epidemiological placism, and the cohesion of stigma to semiotically powerful levels of place – rather than to realistic risk categories – are discussed. Taking its authority from epidemiology, placism is an …

Do You Delve Below The Tip Of The Iceberg? Language For Thinking And Learning, Sandra Lennox Jan 2017

Do You Delve Below The Tip Of The Iceberg? Language For Thinking And Learning, Sandra Lennox

Education Papers and Journal Articles

What are the similarities between an iceberg and language and literacy? Usually only about 10% of an iceberg is above the surface; the shape of the underwater portion is difficult to judge and can cause problems for the unwary. Identifying and providing the most effective support to foster early language and literacy skills can be equally hidden.

But language is complex. It is a tool for thinking and learning. Key skills developed during the early years are critical for success at school. Yet for many young children, gaps in vocabulary acquisition and development are well established before they enter school. …

A Comparison Of Catechesis Of The Good Shepherd And Godly Play, Gerard O'Shea Jan 2017

A Comparison Of Catechesis Of The Good Shepherd And Godly Play, Gerard O'Shea

Education Papers and Journal Articles

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and Godly Play are the two best known variants of Montessori style Religious Education programmes. While they have much in common, there are also obvious differences. This article offers a brief outline of the distinctive features of each programme, including some analysis of their effectiveness in terms of contemporary educational research. The article identifies four areas of significant difference, namely, the understanding of the Imago Dei, the stance taken towards sacraments and sacramentality, pedagogy and the conduct of the sessions themselves. The author argues that these differences create a natural constituency for each programme. …

A Novel Intellectual Decision Support Model Of Careers Based On Semantic Spaces, Ashraf Darwish, Olga Poleshchuk Jan 2017

A Novel Intellectual Decision Support Model Of Careers Based On Semantic Spaces, Ashraf Darwish, Olga Poleshchuk

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper presents a new intellectual support model to evaluate the conditions of career choice for university graduates. This model is based on academic progress, intelligence and personal characteristics of university graduates. The proposed model is based on expert (employers) opinions about the importance of each characteristic for successful career. The Scientific novelty of this model is that the authors do not handle numeric values of the characteristics, but formalize them with the help of semantic spaces COSS because according to the properties of COSS each term has at least one typical representative and each point of universal set has …

Culturally Induced Range Infilling Of Eastern Redcedar: A Problem In Ecology, An Ecological Problem, Or Both?, Aubrey Streit Krug, Daniel R. Uden, Craig R. Allen, Dirac L. Twidwell Jr Jan 2017

Culturally Induced Range Infilling Of Eastern Redcedar: A Problem In Ecology, An Ecological Problem, Or Both?, Aubrey Streit Krug, Daniel R. Uden, Craig R. Allen, Dirac L. Twidwell Jr

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

The philosopher John Passmore distinguished between (1) “problems in ecology,” or what we might call problems in scientific understanding of ecological change, and (2) “ecological problems,” or what we might call problems faced by societies due to ecological change. The spread of eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) and conversion of the central and southern Great Plains of North America to juniper woodland might be categorized as a problem in ecology, an ecological problem, or both. Here, we integrate and apply two interdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving—social-ecological systems thinking and ecocriticism—to understand the role of human culture in recognizing, driving, and …

  • People who struggle and don’t give up, those are the people I most admire. Whether they’re 52 year old social activists or whether they’re 16 year old college freshmen. That’s what really counts. Not just what you’re given or what you have easily, but what you struggle with. You know, and nobody struggles 100% of the time and nobody achieves what they wanted 100% of the time, but that’s a quality in people that I …

Going Beyond The Text: The Inferencing Processes Of Skilled Readers In L1 And L2 Across Reading Tasks, Angela Meyer Sterzik

Faculty & Staff Publications - ELI

This small exploratory study investigated the inferencing processes of skilled first language (L1) and second language (L2) readers for two academic tasks. The goal was to examine possible effects of language and task, or reading purpose, on the frequency and distribution of inferences. Participants (n = 10) were native speakers of German enrolled at a large university in Hessen, Germany in a B.Ed. program. Participants read two expository texts (one written in German and the other written in English) in two task conditions: summary and position-paper. Think-aloud protocols while reading and stimulated recall immediately after reading were recorded, transcribed, coded, …

Exploring Reasons Why Australian Senior Secondary Students Do Not Enrol In Higher-Level Mathematics Courses, G Hine Jan 2017

Exploring Reasons Why Australian Senior Secondary Students Do Not Enrol In Higher-Level Mathematics Courses, G Hine

Education Conference Papers

In this research paper, I present the reasons why senior secondary students elect not to enrol in a higher mathematics course. All Year 11 and Year 12 mathematics students within Western Australian secondary schools were invited to participate in an online survey comprised chiefly of qualitative items. The key reasons espoused by students include an expressed dissatisfaction with mathematics, the opinion that there are other more viable courses of study to pursue, and that the Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking (ATAR) can be maximised by taking a lower mathematics course. In addition, student testimony suggests that there are few incentives offered …
