English Proficiency Associated With The High School Grades Of Lep Students In Abilene Isd, Donald A. Dolton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, immigration into the U.S. has increased because of growing economic problems around the world. Economic globalization and technological developments (internet access and the ability to move massive amounts of information and people in a short amount of time) have influenced the number of those seeking asylum. Accordingly, the U.S. school system continues to see an increase in students who are culturally diverse with greater educational deficiencies and limited English proficiency (LEP). In Texas there has been a 90% increase in the number of immigrants from 1990 to 2010 (National CE). This means that currently immigrants make up …

Changing Dynamics Of Media Guidelines For Suicide Reporting In The Age Of Instant Messaging, William Patrick Brown Jan 2017

Changing Dynamics Of Media Guidelines For Suicide Reporting In The Age Of Instant Messaging, William Patrick Brown

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

Efforts to lower the teenage suicide rate in America have been a complete failure. The purpose of this Project is to provide a production guide and literature review for use in the production of a short-film documentary that discusses the steadily increasing teen suicide rate in America. Using an historical research methodology, evidence indicates that the historical media practice of not reporting teen suicide may be detrimental to society’s teen suicide prevention efforts. Recent statistics from the CDC (2016) indicate a dramatic increase in teen suicides, some believe that this increase may be due to a corresponding increase in text …

Teacher And Student Perceptions Of World Englishes (We) Pronunciations In Two Us Settings, Marie Arrieta Jan 2017

Teacher And Student Perceptions Of World Englishes (We) Pronunciations In Two Us Settings, Marie Arrieta

Dissertations and Theses

The present study investigated the perceptions and attitudes of two groups each of ESL teachers and students in the United States regarding World Englishes (WE) pronunciations before and after watching a video on WE accents. Data gathered via online surveys were analyzed using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. The results show that the perceptions of the teachers in the study ranged from somewhat negative to mildly positive, both pre- and post-video, which is consistent with Brown's (1993) findings that teachers' perceptions changed little if at all after being briefly exposed to WE stimuli. The education of the teachers …

The Influence Of Literacy Intervention On Mathematics Performance, Twana R. Watkins

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether participation in an after-school literacy program utilizing the Barton Reading & Spelling System® (BRSS; Barton, 2000; Barton, 2002) would significantly affect mathematics skills as measured by total mathematics scores on a state-mandated testing assessment. The study consisted of 38 age- and gender-balanced participants categorized into an experimental or control group based on participation in the after-school program. Independent samples t tests and a paired samples t test were used to analyze test score differences for the first (Year 1) and second (Year 2) testing opportunities after exposure to the BRSS program. …

Impact Of Mindset On Literacy: What Happens To Literacy Skills When A Growth Mindset Is Taught To First Graders, Katherine Saia

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine the type of mindsets held by first graders and to determine what happens when they are exposed to ways to have a growth mindset. The goal is to see what happens when children use a growth mindset when asked to engage in challenging literacy activities. First graders were first evaluated using a mindset survey and reading levels were determined. Logic puzzles were given and timed to determine if work effort matched that of the mindset survey. Students showed a change in mindset and growth in reading abilities. Implications for future research are …

Who Cares How Congress Really Works?, Ryan D. Doerfler Jan 2017

Who Cares How Congress Really Works?, Ryan D. Doerfler

Duke Law Journal

Legislative intent is a fiction. Courts and scholars accept this, by and large. As this Article shows, however, both are confused as to why legislative intent is a fiction and as to what this fiction entails.

This Article first argues that the standard explanation—that Congress is a “they,” not an “it”—rests on an unduly simple conception of shared agency. Drawing from contemporary scholarship in the philosophy of action, it contends that Congress has no collective intention, not because of difficulties in aggregating the intentions of individual members, but rather because Congress lacks the sort of delegatory structure that one finds …

When Stuff Becomes Art: The Protection Of Contemporary Art Through The Elimination Of Vara’S Public-Presentation Exception, Elizabeth Plaster Jan 2017

When Stuff Becomes Art: The Protection Of Contemporary Art Through The Elimination Of Vara’S Public-Presentation Exception, Elizabeth Plaster

Duke Law Journal

The Visual Artists Rights Act of 1990 (VARA) grants an artist the broad power to “prevent any intentional distortion, mutilation, or other modification of the work which would be prejudicial to [the artist’s] honor or reputation.” This right is significantly circumscribed, however, by VARA’s public-presentation exception, which states that a modification “which is the result . . . of the public presentation, including lighting and placement, of the work is not a destruction, distortion, mutilation, or other modification” that would otherwise violate VARA.

This Note argues that the public-presentation exception is injudicious in light of the rise of the contemporary …

Poverty, The Great Unequalizer: Improving The Delivery System For Civil Legal Aid, Latonia Haney Keith Jan 2017

Poverty, The Great Unequalizer: Improving The Delivery System For Civil Legal Aid, Latonia Haney Keith

Catholic University Law Review

When individuals in the United States face civil justice issues, they are not entitled to legal counsel and therefore must secure paid counsel, proceed pro se or qualify for free legal assistance. As a result of the economic downturn, the number of Americans who are unable to afford legal counsel is now at an all-time high. In response to this ever-widening justice gap, the public interest community has launched multiple initiatives to supplement the underfunded legal aid system. Though valiant, this article argues that this approach has unfortunately created a complex, fragmented and overlapping delivery system for legal aid. This …

Allen Teaches And Practices The Art Of Translation., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

An old Italian adage, “traduttore, traditore,” whose literal translation is “translator, traitor,” has been haunting the world of translation for decades. In fact, translation is a difficult art that not many people fully understand, and there are professors who teach it in college.

One of those professors is Dr. Esther Allen of the Department of Modern Languages and Comparative Literature in the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences at Baruch College of the City University of New York.

A Stochastic Shell Model Of Turbulence: Numerical And Analytical Results, Kristen Campilonga, Dennis Gucker, Joshua Keller Jan 2017

A Stochastic Shell Model Of Turbulence: Numerical And Analytical Results, Kristen Campilonga, Dennis Gucker, Joshua Keller

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

We consider an inviscid shell model of turbulence with the addition of Itô and Stratonovich multiplicative stochastic forcing. Numerical simulations are performed for both models that show dissipation of energy at an algebraic rate. A comparison between the Itô and Stratonovich effects is examined. Positivity of solutions is discussed and demonstrated numerically.

Sectioning Angles Using Hyperbolic Curves, Julie Fink, Nicholas Molbert Jan 2017

Sectioning Angles Using Hyperbolic Curves, Julie Fink, Nicholas Molbert

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

In this paper, we construct a single hyperbola G that, along with a straight edge and compass, allow for the trisection of any angle. Descartes constructed a parabola with this property in his original treatment of analytic geometry. Unlike Descartes's proof, the proof that all angles can be trisected with the hyperbola G is a geometric rather than an algebraic argument.
