Implementing Semantic Document Search Using A Bounded Random Walk In A Probabilistic Graph, Lubomir Stanchev Jan 2017

Implementing Semantic Document Search Using A Bounded Random Walk In A Probabilistic Graph, Lubomir Stanchev

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Given a set of documents and an input query that is expressed using natural language, the problem of document search is retrieving all relevant documents ordered by the degree of relevance. Semantic document search fetches not only documents that contain words from the input query, but also documents that are semantically relevant. For example, the query "friendly pets" will consider documents that contain the words "dog" and "cat", among others. One way to implement semantic search is to use a probabilistic graph in which the input query is connected to the documents through paths that contain semantically similar words and …

What’S New? Deploying A Library New Titles Page With Minimal Programming, John Meyerhofer Jan 2017

What’S New? Deploying A Library New Titles Page With Minimal Programming, John Meyerhofer

Staff Publications

With a new titles web page, a library has a place to show faculty, students, and staff the items they are purchasing for their community. However, many times heavy programing knowledge and/or a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) or APIs separate a library’s data from making a new titles web page a reality. Without IT staff, a new titles page can become nearly impossible or not worth the effort. Here we will demonstrate how a small liberal arts college took its acquisition data and combined it with a Google Sheet, HTML, and a little JavaScript to create a new …

The Voices Of Silence In Online Charitable Fundraising: A Focus Group Study In China, Xun Lin, Hua Huang

The Qualitative Report

Charitable fundraising, which often goes viral, has been flourishing on Wechat, the most popular social media site in China. It has given rise to a variety of forms of resistance. Silence among them is particularly evident. This study was conducted on three focus groups to unveil the hidden voices in the silent college students in an online charitable fundraising. Findings show that these voices demonstrate participants’ reclaiming of authorship of private space on Moments, their endeavour to avoid creating stress in vulnerable others, and their questioning of the configuration of responsibility. These voices show negotiation with or resistance against the …

Difficulties Of Simplicity, Cody M. Bradley Jan 2017

Difficulties Of Simplicity, Cody M. Bradley

Quaerens Deum: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal for Philosophy of Religion

This paper attempts to show that the doctrine of divine simplicity suffers from difficulties which undermine its plausibility. The main difficulties explored are Plantinga’s problem of double identification, Pruss’ multiple attributes problem, and Schmitt’s co-specificity problem. In more recent years, defenders of the doctrine have offered a way out of these problems by interpreting it in light of a truthmaker account of predication. This paper analyzes this recent defense, among others, and attempts to show that this new interpretation of divine simplicity still has problems which undermine the plausibility of the doctrine.

Reading Comprehension Through Incidental Learning: Efficacy Of An After-School Literacy Program Utilizing The Barton Reading & Spelling System®, Sarah L. Gearhart

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated reading comprehension gains through incidental learning for students participating in an after-school program utilizing the Barton Reading & Spelling System®. Participants included 78 students enrolled in a public school system in Northeast Arkansas. These students were compared to peers with similar reading difficulties who did not participate in the program. Reading comprehension gains through incidental learning were determined for all participants based upon national and state standardized assessment measures (e.g., Iowa Test of Basic Skills® (ITBS®), Stanford Achievement Test, Tenth Edition (SAT-10), and the Arkansas Augmented Benchmark Examination (AABE)). No differences in performance were found between the …

An Intentional Tort Theory Of Patents, Saurabh Vishnubhakat Jan 2017

An Intentional Tort Theory Of Patents, Saurabh Vishnubhakat

Florida Law Review

This Article challenges the dogma of U.S. patent law that direct infringement is a strict liability tort. Impermissibly practicing a patented invention does create liability even if the infringer did not intend to infringe or know about the patent. The consensus is that this is a form of strict liability. The flaw in the consensus is that it proves too little, for the same is true of intentional torts: intent to commit the tort is unnecessary, and ignorance of the legal right is no excuse. What is relevant is intent to perform the action that the law deems tortious. So …

The Aesthetic Ideology Of Post-Marxism, Yongkang Fan, Fengjie Liu Jan 2017

The Aesthetic Ideology Of Post-Marxism, Yongkang Fan, Fengjie Liu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

This paper aims to analyze the philosophical basis, theoretical connotation and theoretical characteristics of the theory of post-Marxist aesthetic ideology. The influential theory about aesthetic ideology in China belongs to the "problematic" of traditional Marxism, but the contemporary Western aesthetic ideology belongs to the 'problematic' of post-Marxism. The former is based on historical materialism, and the latter on cultural materialism and language constructivism. From the perspective of post-Marxism, aesthetic ideology no longer stays at the ‘metaphysical’ linguistic, cultural and symbolic levels; it is integrated with "physical" material systems and social reality and becomes parasitic within the institutions, thus having material …

Implications Of Acceleration On Student Success Course Curriculum: A Comparison Of Accelerated And Traditional Course Modalities, Alice L. Picardo

Theses and Dissertations

Many individuals enter community colleges with high expectations of improving skills, yet are underprepared for the demands of college. Student success courses and acceleration are promising interventions created to improve success rates in developmental education, however, research on accelerated student success courses is virtually non-existent. This explanatory, sequential mixed methods study compared accelerated and traditional student success courses on the attainment of course learning outcomes, term grade point average and retention from fall to spring, while participants' motivation and use of learning strategies were analyzed in both strands. Students' experiences were also analyzed. Findings indicate 1) that the nature of …

Cortical Correlates Of The Auditory Frequency-Following And Onset Responses: Eeg And Fmri Evidence, Emily B.J. Coffey, Gabriella Musacchia, Robert J. Zatorre Jan 2017

Cortical Correlates Of The Auditory Frequency-Following And Onset Responses: Eeg And Fmri Evidence, Emily B.J. Coffey, Gabriella Musacchia, Robert J. Zatorre

All Faculty Scholarship

The frequency-following response (FFR) is a measure of the brain's periodic sound encoding. It is of increasing importance for studying the human auditory nervous system due to numerous associations with auditory cognition and dysfunction. Although the FFR is widely interpreted as originating from brainstem nuclei, a recent study using MEG suggested that there is also a right-lateralized contribution from the auditory cortex at the fundamental frequency (Coffey et al., 2016b). Our objectives in the present work were to validate and better localize this result using a completely different neuroimaging modality and to document the relationships between the FFR, the onset …

Phonetic And Phonological Research Sharing Methods, Cory C. Coogan

The Kabod

This paper reviews the materials linguists use to compile and share research in the linguistic sub-fields of phonetics and phonology. It summarizes the content and purpose of major books, journal publications, and databases within these two fields, especially those with broad selections of data that have been collected for cross-linguistic study and research reference. This paper discusses the various uses of these materials and then analyzes how well equipped the linguistic research community is for compiling and sharing comprehensive-oriented language data.

Can Law Be A Source Of Insight For Other Academic Disciplines?, Stephen Matthew Feldman

Faculty Articles

Law has been a borrower but not a supplier Law schools in effect have been located on oneway streets with ideas flowing in but nothing going out This essay is intended to begin a dialogue that could change the oneway streets between law schools and other university departments into twoway streets I want to demonstrate that legal and jurisprudential studies can be a source of ideas for scholars in other fields In particular this essay argues that the legal concept of the burden of proof can illuminate disputes between theorists of modernism and postmodernism
