Linguistic Gains During Short-Term Study Abroad: Examining The Role Of Initial Proficiency, Luna Fermin May 2017

Linguistic Gains During Short-Term Study Abroad: Examining The Role Of Initial Proficiency, Luna Fermin

Honors Capstones

The focus of this project is to determine whether or not second-language learners make significant linguistic gains during short-term study abroad programs. Today we see a ton of study-abroad programs, specifically short-term programs, that are popping up all over the nation but we do not really know if these experiences make a difference when it comes to learner proficiency. When people ask, What is the best way to acquire another language? most people typically say that studying in a different country is the most effective way; however, the results of empirical research are mixed. This particular project hones in on …

Stance Taking As A Marker Of Identity In Bilingual Hispanic Millennials, Marc Gehlsen May 2017

Stance Taking As A Marker Of Identity In Bilingual Hispanic Millennials, Marc Gehlsen

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The analysis of stance taking in discourse has several implications about the expression of the identity of the speaker by means of sentence formation consistent with patterns among members of a speech community. This study focuses on the ways in which speakers that are considered a part of the millennial generation (birth dates between 1982 and 2004) express their identity as US-born Latino heritage speakers. Through an analysis of previous case studies, pre-recorded individual interviews of the target group, and research in the field of stance taking, I outline the ways in which a speaker can use stance to express …

Formal Modeling And Mining Of Big Data, Aljoharah A. Algwaiz

Doctoral Dissertations

As data collection technologies are advancing and memory storage costs are declining, volumes of data collected have soared. Scientists and investigators are collecting all possible data in fear of missing out on important information. With the merge of the data collection trend, researchers were studying data mining and analysis to find the most efficient way to data mine. There are various valuable data mining techniques that can be found in literature such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), Neural Networks (ANN), and Formal Methods (Grammars). Grammars are a very valuable in analyzing structured data and describing them in a condense matter. …

Conrad's Pronoun Usage As A Stylistic Marker And Its Relation To His Density Of Text And Themes, Jennifer K. Onishi May 2017

Conrad's Pronoun Usage As A Stylistic Marker And Its Relation To His Density Of Text And Themes, Jennifer K. Onishi

English Department Theses

In this thesis I perform a close examination of Conrad’s use of pronouns. Before this data is related, a brief overview of Conrad’s linguistic history and the history of his criticism is presented. This overview allows for the data to be placed in the context of his linguistic interference. It also lays out what aspects of Conrad’s language have already been explored. Pronouns are analyzed by word, type, and distance from the referent. The results of this study are then combined with statistical data from previous studies of Conrad’s grammar and linguistics. This combined data is used to explain one …

Barriers To Healthcare In The Hispanic Population Of Dekalb County: A Healthcare Provider Perspective, Brittany L. Rios May 2017

Barriers To Healthcare In The Hispanic Population Of Dekalb County: A Healthcare Provider Perspective, Brittany L. Rios

Honors Capstones

Numerous qualitative studies have identified a variety of barriers faced by Hispanic patients when accessing healthcare, but there has been minimal research completed on healthcare providers’ perspectives of these barriers. The present study was created to investigate current healthcare providers’ perspectives to gain new insight into the factors influencing accessibility of care. In this qualitative study, five healthcare providers were selected as participants through snowball sampling techniques. Data collection occurred through face-to-face interviews, and, with utilization of the Glaser and Strauss constant comparison method of data analysis, four major categories emerged. Findings showed that the barriers identified by healthcare providers …

Memes And Politics: An Analysis Of The Digital Memetic Rhetoric Employed During The 2016 Presidential Election, Haley Nystrom May 2017

Memes And Politics: An Analysis Of The Digital Memetic Rhetoric Employed During The 2016 Presidential Election, Haley Nystrom

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

This paper examines the rhetorical strategies employed in the most popular political memes posted during the 2016 election year. It seeks to analyze thematic trends in rhetorical content reflective of cultural perceptions about American politics, anthropological realities, and information sharing and acquisition in The Digital Age. It measures how these different factors contributed to the “success” or lack thereof of the memes analyzed through various forms of reinforcement.
Pulling from a pool of the 500 most-shared political memes within the given time frame, I analyze recurring trends that appeared in fifty liberal and fifty conservative memes. My findings demonstrate how …

Cultura, Lengua Y Diversidad Cultural De Naciones Minoritarias: Los Casos De Quebec Y Cataluña, Territorios… ¿Compartidos?, Diane Saint-Pierre, Alexandre Couture Gagnon

Political Science Faculty Publications

A Marriage And Its Music: The Work Of Elsa Olivieri Sangiacomo Respighi In Fascist Italy, Penny R. S. Brandt May 2017

A Marriage And Its Music: The Work Of Elsa Olivieri Sangiacomo Respighi In Fascist Italy, Penny R. S. Brandt

Doctoral Dissertations

Elsa Olivieri Sangiacomo (1894–1996) was an Italian pianist, singer, and composer. She composed several works for voice and piano early in life that were published by Casa Ricordi in Milan, but she ultimately put her creative aspirations aside for the opportunity to become the housewife and assistant of her composition teacher, the celebrated composer Ottorino Respighi (1879–1936). The marriage provided Olivieri with connections and performance opportunities that continued to benefit her during the sixty years she lived as a widow. After Respighi’s death, she returned briefly to composition as a means of catharsis, composing both small and large-scale works—including two …

Race, Gender, And Exile In Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises And Baldwin's Giovanni's Room, Abby E. Gould May 2017

Race, Gender, And Exile In Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises And Baldwin's Giovanni's Room, Abby E. Gould

Senior Theses

This senior thesis for the South Carolina Honors College conducts a literary analysis of Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises and James Baldwin’s Giovanni’s Room. Across these two texts, I focus on expatriates, examining the psychological trauma that ensues when they are forced to define their “self” not in terms of where they are, but in terms of who they really are. These challenges to one’s self, I argue, illuminate the complexity of gender and sexual identity as well as the social structures that assign values to certain forms or expressions of masculinity.

Rapping Back: Counter-Narratives From Auckland, New Zealand, Mariel Lopez Rogers May 2017

Rapping Back: Counter-Narratives From Auckland, New Zealand, Mariel Lopez Rogers

Master's Theses

Across the Pacific in Auckland, New Zealand two rap groups, Homebrew and @Peace, are contributing to a theoretically rich and socially conscious Hip Hop scene. Their music critically questions commercialism and conformity in a culture shaped by a history of colonialism. This makes their message starkly opposed to the normative values of New Zealand. The musicians of Homebrew and @Peace, a mix of Polynesian and Pakeha (people of European descent), employ methods of decolonization theory through the use of storytelling and focus on indigenous values. In a country that has adopted the neoliberal beliefs that competition drives human relations, and …

The Fifth Epoch: Socio-Economic Approach To Sustainable Capitalism, David M. Boje, Yue Cai Hillon May 2017

The Fifth Epoch: Socio-Economic Approach To Sustainable Capitalism, David M. Boje, Yue Cai Hillon

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

The purpose of this conceptual essay is to challenge the inevitability of living with the destructive beast of speculative market economics in the 4th epoch of global capitalism. We are facing an existential socio-ecological threat from the short-term excesses of financial capitalism, a socially irresponsible form that consumes without producing value and without bearing entrepreneurial risk, benefitting only the few. The fate of roughly 90% of humanity hangs in the balance. The primary contribution of this paper proposes a 5th epoch of capitalism, inspired by Savall and Zardet’s socio-economic and sustainable approach that restores human potential and value …

Contemporary Jesuit Epistemological Interests, James G. Murphy May 2017

Contemporary Jesuit Epistemological Interests, James G. Murphy

Philosophy: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Apart from an orientation to and interest in the discernment of spirits as laid out in St Ignatius’s Spiritual Exercises, there does not exist a Jesuit epistemology as such. Compared to the numbers of Jesuit systematic theologians, scripture scholars, metaphysicians, and ethicists, there have been few Jesuit epistemologists.2 In metaphysics, Jesuits have been Thomist or Suarezian, even Platonist. In ethics, they have ranged from proportionalist through deontologist to virtue ethicist. No similar distinctive Jesuit presence is to be found in epistemology....
