Write Place At The Write Time: A Study Of How Writing Contexts Affect Rates Of Productivity And Perceptions Of Success In Creative Writing, Sydnie R. Long
Write Place At The Write Time: A Study Of How Writing Contexts Affect Rates Of Productivity And Perceptions Of Success In Creative Writing, Sydnie R. Long
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
This research explores the writing contexts of a few creative writers in an effort to learn more about the habits and conditions with which creative writers prefer to work. My goal is to observe how different contexts affect the success or productivity a writer experiences. I will build my project off the central question, is there a correlation between writing contexts and success in writing? From there, I will divide the project into three subsections guided by four subquestions aiming to explore where and how writers write, and gain an insight to their views on what success and productivity mean …
Be Careful What You Say: The Relationship Between Prosecutorial Language In Closing Statements And Sentencing Outcomes In Real Capital Cases, Megan J. Parker
Be Careful What You Say: The Relationship Between Prosecutorial Language In Closing Statements And Sentencing Outcomes In Real Capital Cases, Megan J. Parker
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Moral disengagement refers to how individuals rationalize the decisions they make, especially if they may be immoral or difficult. Individuals can be primed to engage in moral disengagement through the use of specific language. The current study analyzed language strategies used in closing statements of real capital murder cases to investigate which are correlated with a death penalty sentence. Because jurors are responsible for sentencing another individual to death, they may have some difficulty making such a decision. The current study found that future dangerousness and empathetic language were significantly correlated to jurors sentencing the death to the death penalty. …
The Relationship Between Fundamental Frequency Variation And Articulation In Healthy Speech Production, Casey Behre
The Relationship Between Fundamental Frequency Variation And Articulation In Healthy Speech Production, Casey Behre
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Fundamental Frequency (F0) and articulation are two factors of speech production that impact speech perception, and yet the potential interactions of these two factors are not well understood. Their relationship has potential theoretical as well as clinical implications. This Honors Project aims to better understand this relationship by examining changes in fundamental frequency (F0) and the acoustic vowel space as an index of articulatory behaviors with a within-speaker approach. Specifically, F0 variations were examined in relation to the acoustic vowel space for 10 male native speakers of American English. Two sets of acoustic measures were made to evaluate F0 and …
Toward Measuring Network Aesthetics Based On Symmetry, Zengqiang Chen, Matthias Dehmer, Frank Emmert-Streib, Abbe Mowshowitz, Yongtang Shi
Toward Measuring Network Aesthetics Based On Symmetry, Zengqiang Chen, Matthias Dehmer, Frank Emmert-Streib, Abbe Mowshowitz, Yongtang Shi
Publications and Research
In this exploratory paper, we discuss quantitative graph-theoretical measures of network aesthetics. Related work in this area has typically focused on geometrical features (e.g., line crossings or edge bendiness) of drawings or visual representations of graphs which purportedly affect an observer’s perception. Here we take a very different approach, abandoning reliance on geometrical properties, and apply information-theoretic measures to abstract graphs and networks directly (rather than to their visual representaions) as a means of capturing classical appreciation of structural symmetry. Examples are used solely to motivate the approach to measurement, and to elucidate our symmetry-based mathematical theory of network aesthetics.
Enhancing The Learning Experience- Use Of Video Game Technology For Teaching Japanese Language, Craig A. Decampli
Enhancing The Learning Experience- Use Of Video Game Technology For Teaching Japanese Language, Craig A. Decampli
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
The Japanese language is challenging to learn, especially for native speakers of Indo- European languages. The three components of written Japanese -- Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji – include 2,136 Kanji characters, and 46 each for Katakana and Hiragana. Teaching Japanese – generally through repetition – can lead to student boredom and affect success. Research shows that video games can at least provide a more enjoyable learning experience. Despite this fact, there are a lack of video games for teaching Japanese characters. Using the Unity game engine and the C# programming language, a video game for enhancing the learning of students …
Literature Circles In A Fifth Grade Classroom: A Qualitative Study Examining How The Teacher And Students Used Literature Circles And The Impact They Have On Student Learning, Laura Claypool Pambianchi
Literature Circles In A Fifth Grade Classroom: A Qualitative Study Examining How The Teacher And Students Used Literature Circles And The Impact They Have On Student Learning, Laura Claypool Pambianchi
Theses and Dissertations
State and national standards, including the Common Core State Standards, state that students should be expected to learn to discuss and analyze texts, comprehend ideas in increasingly complex texts, and justify their thinking. Literature circles are an instructional practice suggested by many educational writers as an instructional practice that can help students meet these standards; however, research examining the impact literature circles have on students and their teacher in the classroom is needed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the implementation of literature circles in a classroom by examining how students engage in the literature circle process and …

Schuell’S Stimulation Approach Administered Intensively For An Individual With Chronic, Severe Non-Fluent Aphasia, Shannon K. Hughes
Schuell’S Stimulation Approach Administered Intensively For An Individual With Chronic, Severe Non-Fluent Aphasia, Shannon K. Hughes
Master's Theses
Background: Schuell’s Stimulation Approach is frequently implemented within conventional speech language therapy (SLT) for aphasia. Recent research supports the use of intensive treatment, as well as the potential for continued gains in the chronic stage of aphasia. Given the limited evidence-based treatment options for individuals with chronic, severe non-fluent aphasia, investigation was warranted.
Aims: The current study used a single subject design with multiple probes across behaviors to investigate how an individual with chronic, severe non-fluent aphasia, who had ceased to make gains in conventional SLT, would respond to administration of Schuell’s Stimulation Approach at the standard intensive dosage of …
Gold Teeth: Making Meaning Through Narrative, Quinn Riesenman
Gold Teeth: Making Meaning Through Narrative, Quinn Riesenman
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
How do we create meaning in life through the telling of narratives? What do we have to gain by comparing stories from different cultures and times? By looking at two seemingly disparate stories - The Story of Kotikarna and Thomas Pynchon's Inherent Vice - and asking ourselves how they impart similar meanings through varying narratological elements, we can better understand how humans order and establish value in the world, and how humans argue for these orders and values through narrative.
Maids: An Analysis Of Molière’S Female Ideal In Tartuffe And The Learned Ladies, Rosalie S. Olson
Maids: An Analysis Of Molière’S Female Ideal In Tartuffe And The Learned Ladies, Rosalie S. Olson
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
This poster examines apparent contradictions in Molière’s feminine ideal through two of his plays: Tartuffe and The Learned Ladies. Written at different points during his career but sharing many significant similarities, these plays reveal a struggle on Molière’s part to come to terms with the evolving role of women at the time. Molière’s perspective on women is analyzed through the two maids in these plays, Dorine and Martine, who present differing ideas in their dialogue and their role as servants. Using the themes, historical context, and arguments and counterarguments of each play, this poster addresses some of the ambiguity …
Bridging The Gap: A Pentadic Analysis Of Theresa May’S Conservative Conference Speech “Britain After Brexit: A Vision Of A Global Britain”, Maria Raquel J. Escalera Gonzalez
Bridging The Gap: A Pentadic Analysis Of Theresa May’S Conservative Conference Speech “Britain After Brexit: A Vision Of A Global Britain”, Maria Raquel J. Escalera Gonzalez
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
This qualitative study of British Prime Minister Theresa May’s Conservative conference speech “Britain after Brexit: A Vision of a Global Britain” delivered in the fall of 2016 uses pentadic criticism as the basis for its analysis. This contemporary study identifies women as an underrepresented minority in the realm of politics around the world and media as a powerful channel for their portrayal. As the role of women in political leadership is more prevalent in times of crisis around the world, it is exceedingly important to understand the role that the media can play in their portrayal for both foreign and …

Cállate No Me Haga Preguntas: A Metaphoric Analysis Of Reggaeton And Colombian Machista Culture, Hope A. Hudson
Cállate No Me Haga Preguntas: A Metaphoric Analysis Of Reggaeton And Colombian Machista Culture, Hope A. Hudson
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
This study uses metaphor criticism to analyze three reggaeton songs by Colombian artists. The focus was to explore how women were portrayed metaphorically in the genre, and in what ways this connected to machista, or male-centric elements of Colombian culture. Three central metaphors were identified through this analysis: la casa and la calle, woman as a drug, and women in reference to heat and temperature. Ultimately, it was found that a common thread between these metaphors was the objectification of women throughout the genre. Themes discovered in the genre were found to share similarities with elements of Colombian …
