An Intellectual Space For Educational Leaders' Diversity And Social Justice Discourse, Yanira Oliveras-Ortiz, Jennifer Jones
An Intellectual Space For Educational Leaders' Diversity And Social Justice Discourse, Yanira Oliveras-Ortiz, Jennifer Jones
Diversity, Social Justice, and the Educational Leader
Educational leaders, particularly the campus leaders, have often defined their job and responsibilities as overwhelming. However, regardless of the endless tasks on school administrators’ to do lists, ensuring that every child receives an excellent education should be at the forefront of everything educational leaders do. An excellent education is one that not only transfers knowledge to children but also one that develops the critical thinking skills that students will need to make sense of the world and be successful citizens of the democracy in which we exist. Educational leaders have the moral responsibility to understand, and hopefully embrace critical pedagogy …

An Analysis Of Kermit The Frog Memes, Megan Elizabeth Palmer
An Analysis Of Kermit The Frog Memes, Megan Elizabeth Palmer
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Memes have become an increasingly popular form of digital communication since the rise of social media. However, academic study of memes is often limited to those that are connected to specific social, cultural, or political movements. In this paper, I discuss the popularity of the Evil Kermit and the But That's None of My Business Kermit the Frog memes, and argue in favor of widening the genre of memes that academic study tends to focus on. An Analysis of Kermit the Frog Memes was written for COMM 460, the Seminar in Digital Rhetoric, and the sponsoring professor was Jessy Ohl, …

Multilingualism And Ego Depletion In Interference Task Performance – Are Multilingual Brains More Intelligent Than Monolingual Brains?, Dorota B. Botwina
Multilingualism And Ego Depletion In Interference Task Performance – Are Multilingual Brains More Intelligent Than Monolingual Brains?, Dorota B. Botwina
Theses and Dissertations
Research linking multilingualism with better executive control has produced inconsistent findings. Since definitive empirical evidence is not available, this study seeks to explore whether these advantages really exist. The Flanker Task followed an ego depletion task that was introduced to participants who were monolingual, bilingual and trilingual.

What Does Silence = Now? An Analysis Of Past And Present Discourse Surrounding Hiv/Aids, Emily A. Moner
Theses and Dissertations
This essay examines how the HIV/AIDS epidemic was first addressed in the context of politics, media and the general public and subsequently how that compares to the ways in which it’s currently being discussed using popular forms of communication such as Facebook, Twitter and other forms of social media.
The Sounds Of Silence; Or, Isabella’S Counter Discourse In Measure For Measure, Gina Vivona
The Sounds Of Silence; Or, Isabella’S Counter Discourse In Measure For Measure, Gina Vivona
Theses and Dissertations
This argument reshapes the thinking about masculine dominance in Measure for Measure, and considers the patriarchy as a series of socially constructed, hence artificial, rules and regulations. It also explores how Isabella’s discourse and celibacy empower her to defy the constraints of early modern paradigms and achieve individual freedom.
The Feminization Of Violence, Caitlin Logan
The Feminization Of Violence, Caitlin Logan
Theses and Dissertations
Grounded in the necessity of upending the economic base as it is defined by Louis Althusser, this paper seeks to express a possibility for the creation of a feminine voice, that when expressed as itself, independent of the pervasive nature of patriarchal power and significance, could be the very event that engenders the first real “violent” attack on the base. Using Zora Neale Hurston’s, Their Eyes Were Watching God, as an example of a uniquely feminine voice, this paper also seeks to empower the experience of the Black female aesthetic as a perspective capable of tapping the multiplicity of human …

Knowledge Systems And The Colonial Legacies In African Science Education, Edward Lehner, John R. Ziegler
Knowledge Systems And The Colonial Legacies In African Science Education, Edward Lehner, John R. Ziegler
Publications and Research
This review surveys Femi Otulaja and Meshach Ogunniyi’s (2015) Handbook of Research in Science Education in Sub-Saharan Africa, noting the significance of the theoretically rich content and how this book contributes to the field of education as well as to the humanities more broadly. The volume usefully outlines the ways in which science education and scholarship in sub-Saharan Africa continue to be impacted by the region’s colonial history. Several of the chapters also enumerate proposals for teaching and learning science and strengthening academic exchange. Concerns that recur across many of the chapters include inadequate implementation of reforms; a lack …
The Use Of Creaky Voice In Mitigating Face Threatening Acts, Erin Butler
The Use Of Creaky Voice In Mitigating Face Threatening Acts, Erin Butler
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This study explores the use of creaky voice in mitigating face threatening acts. Through the perspective of conversational analysis, examples of salient creaky voice from two audio recordings are analyzed for their role in instances of face threatening acts. The examples of face threatening acts used in this study include commands, requests, disagreements, suggestions, and jokes. Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory of politeness is used as the basis of defining face threatening acts, positive and negative face, and strategies for completing face threatening acts. The analysis shows that salient creaky voice is used in all the examples presented of face …
Finding Palestine, Finding Ourselves: A Philosophy Of Occupation, Narrative, And Peace, Sarah Emma Decker
Finding Palestine, Finding Ourselves: A Philosophy Of Occupation, Narrative, And Peace, Sarah Emma Decker
Honors Theses
This thesis is a philosophical study of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict employing feminist, epistemological, and social and political philosophy to analyze linguistic processes such as narratives, naming, and stereotype formation. The framework of this thesis is the Wittgensteinian paradox of the self defined by the other, according to which individuals are always dependent upon others not merely for the satisfactions of their needs, but for their very conception of self. Following Wittgenstein, I argue that this essential co-dependency is due to the character of our necessarily shared language conventions. Moreover, I apply this framework in an attempt to better articulate …
The Creative Voice--Dialogue Between Writer And Editor: A Portfolio, Valerie M. Mathews
The Creative Voice--Dialogue Between Writer And Editor: A Portfolio, Valerie M. Mathews
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
An author's voice does not venture into the wild west alone; it rides with a full posse. On the surface of a published piece of work, the author appears to be the lone genius; yet, underneath in multilayers of revisions and conversations that carry an author's voice over the rooftops of the world, voice is an intimate communal affair. As an editor, I view co-creation as embodying the push-and-pull relationship that forms between writer and reader, including the editor. A good editor pulls out the best sound from the author even when the manuscript is a wild, caterwauling animal. An …
