Evaluation Of Coloured Traps With Kairomone Attractant For Monitoring Thrips Population Dynamics On Tomato Crop In East Africa, Alexander Mutua Muvea, Helen Lydia Kutima, Zipporah Osiemo Lagat, Monicah Waiganjo, Sevgan Subramanian
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Tomato is an important vegetable crop that is cultivated for the domestic market in Kenya and other East African countries. Thrips are one of the key pests hampering the production of tomato, both by direct damage to the crop and as vectors of tospoviruses. Field experiments were carried out over two planting times to evaluate the use of sticky traps for monitoring thrips infesting tomato in East Africa. Blue, yellow, and clear sticky traps with and without a thrips lure (Lurem-TR) were tested. Field observations for thrips catches on the sticky traps were made weekly until crop senescence. Sticky traps …

Aliner: An R Package For Optimizing Feature-Weighted Alignments And Linguistic Distances, Sean S. Downey, Guowei Sun, Peter Norquest

Linguistic distance measurements are commonly used in anthropology and biology when quantitative and statistical comparisons between words are needed. This is common, for example, when analyzing linguistic and genetic data. Such comparisons can provide insight into historical population patterns and evolutionary processes. However, the most commonly used linguistic distances are derived from edit distances, which do not weight phonetic features that may, for example, represent smaller-scale patterns in linguistic evolution. Thus, computational methods for calculating feature-weighted linguistic distances are needed for linguistic, biological, and evolutionary applications; additionally, the linguistic distances presented here are generic and may have broader applications in …
The Sound Source As An Indicator Of Sound Verbs' Semantic Behavior During The Synthesis Process, Irina V. Ivliyeva
The Sound Source As An Indicator Of Sound Verbs' Semantic Behavior During The Synthesis Process, Irina V. Ivliyeva
Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works
The article examines the predictability of Russian verbal modifications during the process of word formation synthesis. The main reasons for modifiers' combinatorial irregularity with respect to semantically connected sound verbs are identified. For the first time ever, the sound source, as the primary factor in determining the word formation synthesis' results, is described from three perspectives: semantic, lexicographic, and denotative. Using various parameters relevant for both sound source and semantic modifiers, the sound verbs are subjected to combinatorial testing. The nature of dynamic dependency between the results of word formation synthesis, the distinguishing characteristics of modifiers, and the semantic range …
Adaptation Of The Token Test In Standard Indonesian, Bernard A. J. Jap, Chysanti Arumsari
Adaptation Of The Token Test In Standard Indonesian, Bernard A. J. Jap, Chysanti Arumsari
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Aphasia is a language disorder caused by focal brain injury. The Token Test is a tool to detect aphasic symptoms and measure aphasic severity in individuals who suffer brain damage causing language impairment. While Indonesia has a diagnostic test battery for aphasia (TADIR), it has yet to be able to quantify aphasic severity. In this study, we tested 49 individuals: 26 healthy adults, 7 non-aphasic post-stroke individuals, and 16 aphasic individuals. A series of tests were administered: the TADIR, Token Test, and the Verb and Sentence Test. The Token Test was sensitive enough to distinguish between the three groups and …

© 2017 The Author(s). Words are recognized most efficiently by young adults when fixated at an optimal viewing position (OVP), which for English is between a word's beginning and middle letters. How this OVP effect changes with age is unknown but may differ for older adults due to visual declines in later life. Accordingly, a lexical decision experiment was conducted in which short (5-letter) and long (9-letter) words were fixated at various letter positions. The older adults produced slower responses. But, crucially, effects of fixation location for each word-length did not differ substantially across age groups, indicating that OVP effects …

The Al-Qaeda Accelerant In Boko Haram’S Rise, Jacob Zenn
CIWAG Case Studies
(IWS/01 - Irregular Warfare Studies, book 1)
Using primary source materials, Jacob Zenn’s case study, The Al-Qaeda Accelerant in Boko Haram’s Rise, maps the group’s many factions, loyalties, splinterings, and re-formations. Zenn supplies deep insight into the seams and gaps that exist, and how strategic and tactical motivations have propelled an armed group to regional importance. He also dissects how the group’s evolution has taken place under the watchful eye, and often directing hand, of both al-Qaeda and the Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham and highlights its starring role in a new international rivalry: the uncivil war between al-Qaeda …
The Pendulum Of Development: From "The End Of History" To "Make Poverty History", Abby El-Shafei
The Pendulum Of Development: From "The End Of History" To "Make Poverty History", Abby El-Shafei
Theses and Dissertations
Poverty has been a central focus of development since the 1960s. Despite a marked decrease in poverty worldwide, the incidence of poverty remains high; where one in ten people live under the international poverty line of $1.90 a day. In light of the persistence of poverty, international efforts to “make poverty history” have been pursued. Neoliberalism is an economic policy characterized by state retrenchment, free trade, market liberalization, deregulation, privatization, commercialized social programs, and foreign investment. Since its triumph over communism, neoliberalism marked “the end of history.” This thesis examines poverty reduction and neoliberalism in the context of international development …

From The Young Turks To Kemalists: Links And Discontinuities, Erica Dunham
Theses and Dissertations
While current scholarship often points to a direct link between the ideology of Young Turks and the Kemalists, a closer analysis indicates there are many breaks in this link. This thesis analyzes the main influences on the Young Turk movement and the emergence and rise to power of the Kemalist movement, highlighting points of difference in the two movements' ideologies and practices. Although the Young Turk movement influenced the Kemalist movement in the early years of the Turkish Republic, this thesis seeks to highlight the differences and discontinuities that existed between them. While many ideas from the Young Turk movement …

The study is intended to identify a method to answer to uncertainties solving in order to support politician's staff, NLP specialists, artificial intelligence researchers and generally the electors.
A Cognitive Linguistic Study Of Cultural Models Of Age In American English And Egyptian Arabic: A Corpus-Based Approach, Hebatallah Said
A Cognitive Linguistic Study Of Cultural Models Of Age In American English And Egyptian Arabic: A Corpus-Based Approach, Hebatallah Said
Theses and Dissertations
The role of cultural models in sharing social knowledge, shaping social practices and organizing the perceptions, motivations and actions of community members is widely discussed in the literature (Holland & Quinn, 1987; Watson-Gegeo & Gegeo, 1999; Fryberg & Markus, 2007; Curwood, 2014). In each culture, there are perceptions that indicate what is appropriate or inappropriate according to a person's age (Jensen, 2014). This descriptive and exploratory study examines the Egyptian and American force dynamic cultural models of age from a cognitive linguistics approach. As cognitive linguistics applies a usage-based approach to language, this study relies on naturally occurring data derived …

This paper presents an enhanced password authentication scheme by systematically exploiting the motion sensors in a smartwatch. We extract unique features from the sensor data when a smartwatch bearer types his/her password (or PIN), and train certain machine learning classifiers using these features. We then implement smartwatch-aided password authentication using the classifiers. Our scheme is user-friendly since it does not require users to perform any additional actions when typing passwords or PINs other than wearing smartwatches. We conduct a user study involving 51 participants on the developed prototype so as to evaluate its feasibility and performance. Experimental results show that …
The Indian Empire And Its Colonial Practices In South Asia, Yubraj Aryal
The Indian Empire And Its Colonial Practices In South Asia, Yubraj Aryal
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "The India, Empire and its Colonial Practices in South Asia" Yubraj Aryal claims that Bharatiya discourse supports colonization in South Asia. This discourse justifies oppression of institutions, practices, of the non-Bharatiya colonized. The article examines Indian Empire's colonialism toward the weaker, smaller nations along its border and the Bharatiya ideology at the heart of the repressive empire, which is taken to represent the South Asian subcontinent. The article looks at the way in which Bharatiya is perhaps a more oppressive ideology than Orientalism and gives a glimpse into how society, culture, history, and textuality work around power …

Farmer's Regulation By Muhammad Ali 1830 From Legal And Social Perspectives, Enas Moustafa
Theses and Dissertations
The FR played an important role in the Egyptian rural life. It shaped the relation between the farmers and the state. It mainly helped the state to impose tax, collect it and make use of it. The social and anthropological changes the FR caused helped in the formation of modern Egypt. However the FR penalties were characterised with severity, as the punishment was not compatible with the offence being committed. This cruelness made the Egyptian peasant tries to escape the land and always have a hostile relation with the system. The thesis is to examine the various FR articles, its …

Three Spiritual Narratives: A Reading Of Hermann Hesse, Ibn Tufayl And Naguib Mahfouz, Muna Moataz Khattab
Theses and Dissertations
The current thesis examines how narrative form harmoniously coordinates the motif and the physical nature of the fabula to present three levels of the journey, the physical, the metaphorical and the narratological. This study offers a reading of three novels, Hermann Hesse’s Siddhartha, Ibn Tufayl’s Hayy Ibn Yaqzan and Naguib Mahfouz’s The Journey of Ibn Fattouma. These novels are spiritual journeys that suggest how literature can be read as narrative. My use of narratology throughout this thesis engages the role of the fabula and the function of metaphor in the overall development of each novel. My analysis relies on the …
Redeploying Semiology: Contrapuntalism In Coetzee, Friel, And Darwish, Sarah Mahmoud Esmael
Redeploying Semiology: Contrapuntalism In Coetzee, Friel, And Darwish, Sarah Mahmoud Esmael
Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this thesis is to approach the role of the self as it emerges in three texts that are differently impacted by the end of colonialism. This is done by redeploying Roland Barthes' theory of semiology as a way of looking at the spaces between signs as the clue to what the text suggests as a historical document. The spaces between signs will open up the contrapuntal readings of texts that are sometimes called postcolonial. This thesis examines how identity is unmade in Coetzee's Foe, Brian Friel's Translations, and Mahmoud Darwish's Tibaq (A Contrapuntal Reading: On Edward Said). …

Versions Of The Alter Ego: A Study Of Joyce, Kushner, And Ellis, Sherif Mahmoud El Newehy
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis aims to illustrate the value of reading modern literary fiction through the theme of the alter ego. In this thesis, I demonstrate how the writer explores the various meanings of the alter ego in composing intensely imaginative works of fiction that negotiate the creative process in conscious terms. The thesis is indebted to the psychocriticism of Charles Maurron, which enables the domain of the alter ego to be examined in formal and aesthetic terms. In connecting a given work's themes to the alter ego motif, this thesis evaluates the impact of the writer's psychology on his work and …

Owner Time And Cost Contingency Estimation For Building Construction Projects In Egypt, Seif El-Din Nawar
Theses and Dissertations
Time and cost overruns are an integral part of the construction projects. Both have several associated negative consequences to the project owners. Setting the right time and cost contingency is a major contributing factor to the success of the project as it should minimize/prevent budget and time overruns. Project managers usually tend to allocate project time and cost contingency subjectively based on their previous experience and may not capture all projects specific factors that impact the contingency estimation. The competency of the project manager plays an important role in this case in determining the contingency percentage. The contingency estimation for …

Legitimation Strategies In Egyptian Political Discourse: The Case Of Presidential Speeches, Hala Mohammed Said
Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this thesis was to explore the use of language in one of the ways in which it manifests symbolic power (Bourdieu, 2001) in discourse and society. This study investigated the semantic-functional (van Leeuwen, 1995, 2007, 2008; van Leeuwen & Wodak, 1999) strategies used by Egyptian political actors to legitimize controversial events within their public discourse. By adopting a critical discourse analysis (CDA) perspective and utilizing van Leeuwen's legitimation framework (van Leeuwen, 2007, 2008), the analysis was performed on two Egyptian political speeches delivered by President Al Sisi. The first speech addressed the Egyptian government's decision to sign …

Je Cuidoie Avoir Bien Fait: Saintré And The Rules Of The Game, Catherine Blunk
Je Cuidoie Avoir Bien Fait: Saintré And The Rules Of The Game, Catherine Blunk
Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality
In Antoine de La Sale’s fifteenth-century work Jehan de Saintré, a point of rupture in the amorous relationship between Madame des Belles Cousines and Saintré is initiated when this young knight decides to organize and participate in an emprise (a late medieval tournament) without notifying her or asking for permission from the king of France. In this article I will show that that by failing to secure royal authorization before organizing an emprise, Saintré commits a more serious error than often acknowledged in the scholarship about this text. This is important, because many scholars read this scene as …

Dark Stars Of The Evening: Performing African American Citizenship And Identity In Germany, 1890-1920, Kristin L. Moriah
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Dark Stars of the Evening: Performing African American Citizenship and Identity in Germany, 1890-1920 demonstrates that black performers in Germany developed wide networks in the performance world as they sought artistic opportunities beyond the racist circumscription of the American popular stage. Their performances became emblematic of modernity, globalization, and imperial might for German audiences at the turn of the century. African American-styled blackness contributed to the formation of the city of Berlin while allowing African American performers to assert themselves on the global stage. Groups like the Four Black Diamonds had a lengthy engagement with the popular stage in Berlin, …
