Psychopathy, Empathic Concern, And Emotional-Sentence Processing: An N400 Erp Study, Farren Larson Jun 2017

Psychopathy, Empathic Concern, And Emotional-Sentence Processing: An N400 Erp Study, Farren Larson

Student Theses

Using an undergraduate sample, the present study examined how psychopathic traits (assessed by the Psychopathic Personality Inventory-Revised) and empathic concern (assessed by the Interpersonal Reactivity Index) affect emotional-information processing using event-related potentials (ERPs) and a sentential priming paradigm. Participants had their electroencephalogram (EEG) recorded while they silently read sentences with three types of endings: congruent, incongruent, and emotionally negative. We hypothesized that participants with high levels of psychopathic traits and participants with low levels of empathic concern would find the emotionally negative sentence endings less unexpected and disturbing (yielding a smaller N400), compared to participants with low levels of psychopathic …

Information Literacy And Informed Learning: Conceptual Innovations For Il Research And Practice Futures, Christine S. Bruce, Andrew Demasson, Hilary Hughes, Mandy Lupton, Clarence Maybee, Anita Mirijamdotter, Elham Sayyad Abdi, Mary M. Somerville

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers

Our paper draws together conceptual innovations emerging from the work of a group of researchers focussed on the relational approach to information literacy, more recently labelled ‘informed learning’. Team members have been working together in various configurations for periods ranging from seven to seventeen years. Our collaborative approach continues to yield new concepts and constructs which we believe to be of value to ongoing research and practice. Some of the ideas discussed have been previouly published, while others are being put forward for the first time. All are significant in that they together form new constructs that have emerged from …

Gamma-Delta (Gammadelta) (Γδ) T-Cell Lymphoma - Another Case Unclassifiable By World Health Organization Classification: A Case Report, H Sindhu, R Chen, H Chen, Jonathan Wong, R Chaudhry, Y Xu, Jen Chin Wang

NYMC Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: We present a case of gamma-delta T-cell lymphoma that does not fit the current World Health Organization classifications. CASE PRESENTATION: A 74-year-old Caribbean-American woman presented with lymphocytosis, pruritus, and non-drenching night sweats. Bone marrow and peripheral blood analyses both confirmed the diagnosis of gamma-delta T-cell lymphoma. An axillary lymph node biopsy was negative for lymphoma. Clinically absent hepatosplenomegaly and skin lesions with biopsy-proven gamma-delta T-cell lymphoma suggest that she is unclassifiable within the current classification system. CONCLUSIONS: We believe this is a case of not otherwise specified gamma-delta T-cell lymphoma. Accumulation of these rare not otherwise specified cases will …

Correlating Ethnographic Data With Spatial Analysis Of Archaeological Sites: A Case Study From Ca-Ora-507 And The Aliso Creek Region, Matthew V. Stever

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Ethnographers in the early 20th century compiled notes and published reports and books concerning the cultures and life-ways of the California Indians. Among these are the Juaneño (Acjachemen) and Gabrielino (Tongva) peoples.

This study aimed to correlate ethnographic data with methods of spatial archaeology and GIS analysis to test if the privately owned resource collecting areas and tribal boundaries described in the ethnographies could be seen archaeologically. Centered on CA-ORA-507 (an ancient chert quarry), the study shows that the boundaries between these resource areas are culturally derived as well as a part of the greater pattern …

Literacy Tutoring Strategies Of America Reads University-Level Tutors, Mauricio Cadavid

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore, study, outline and describe tutoring strategies applied by American Reads (AR) tutors and non-America Reads (nAR) tutors helping young tutees develop early literacy skills. There is limited research on the implementation of effective tutoring strategies during one-on-one tutoring with elementary school children in terms of early literacy development. Most of the literature is split between peer tutoring and program tutoring. This lack of research presents a particular challenge when it comes to identifying an effective tutor and effective tutoring methodologies. Using a qualitative approach, this study utilizes survey data, session recordings, and …

Slavic Psycholinguistics In The 21st Century, Irina A. Sekerina Jun 2017

Slavic Psycholinguistics In The 21st Century, Irina A. Sekerina

Publications and Research

This article provides an update on research in Slavic psycholinguistics since 2000 following my first review (Sekerina 2006), published as a position paper for the workshop The Future of Slavic Linguistics in America (SLING2K). The focus remains on formal experimental psycholinguistics understood in the narrow sense, i.e., experimental studies conducted with monolingual healthy adults. I review five dimensions characteristic of Slavic psycholinguistics—populations, methods, domains, theoretical approaches, and specific languages—and summarize the experimental data from Slavic languages published in general non-Slavic psycholinguistic journals and proceedings from the leading two conferences on Slavic linguistics, FASL and FDSL, since 2000. I argue that …

Activity Monitor Accuracy For Lower-Limb Amputees Living In Colombia And Texas, Gary Guerra Briseno

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Maintaining physical activity for lower limb prosthesis wearers is important in order to reduce comorbidities and decrease physical function. Activity monitors can provide motivation for the wearer and outcome measurements for the health care professional. Two cohorts of lower extremity amputees participated in two separate studies examining the accuracy of activity monitors. Each participant completed a 200m walking trial while activity monitors were fitted to them and step counts were compared with actual counts. For participants walking on even ground in a developing setting no significant differences between pedometer and actual counts were found, nor were there significant differences with …

Second-Language Learners' Writing Anxiety: Types, Causes, And Teachers' Perceptions, Ehab El Shimi

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the causes and most common types of second-language writing anxiety among students taking an intensive English course in the English Language Institute (ELI) at the American University in Cairo (AUC). Towards this end, the study examined the problem from both the learners' and teachers' perspective in order to provide the teachers with the issues they could consider to help their learners feel less anxious about their writing. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used in this exploratory study. A convenience sample of 51 Egyptian ESL learners enrolled in the Intensive …

"Why Wouldn't You Like It?": Exploring Masculine Identities In Discussions Of Male Rape, Bridget Woods Jun 2017

"Why Wouldn't You Like It?": Exploring Masculine Identities In Discussions Of Male Rape, Bridget Woods

Student Theses

Empirical research on the topic of male rape is scarce within the discipline of psychology. Current research focuses on negative perceptions of male rape victims, but does not take into account the role hegemonic masculinity plays in constructing beliefs about male rape. The present study aims to gather narratives of young men’s beliefs of male rape and male rape myths and analyze how masculinity and masculine identities shape these beliefs. Narratives were gained through collection of journal writings and focus groups, and an integrated narrative analysis was conducted to identify themes and discursive strategies that men employed to balance their …

Details In Testimony: How Hedge Words Influence People’S Perceptions Of Victim Testimony Credibility, Justine B. Rayborn

Student Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine whether hedge words and the age of a memory can influence the way participants (mock jurors) perceive an alleged sexual assault victim’s credibility. Prior research has demonstrated many issues that can affect the accuracy of memory for childhood events such as childhood amnesia, fragmented and distorted memories, false memories and source monitoring errors and the way in which jurors’ decisions can be swayed based on verbal cues to confidence. Here, we further investigated whether jurors' decisions are sensitive to the age of the memory—an event that happened in the recent or distant …

Exploring Concerns Of K-12 Online Educators, Tadd Spencer Farmer

Theses and Dissertations

Although a relatively small number of K-12 students are currently enrolled in online classes, the dramatic growth in online enrollments in recent years suggests that online education will play a significant role in the future landscape of public education. While our understanding of online teaching and learning continues to grow, relatively little is known about the experiences of teachers as they engage in online teaching. In particular, very little is known about the concerns of teachers as they navigate their teaching roles and responsibilities in an online teaching environment. Using an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach, this qualitative study explored the …

Freedom Of Religion In India: Current Issues And Supreme Court Acting As Clergy, Faizan Mustafa, Jagteshwar Singh Sohi Jun 2017

Freedom Of Religion In India: Current Issues And Supreme Court Acting As Clergy, Faizan Mustafa, Jagteshwar Singh Sohi

BYU Law Review

Religion is an indispensable part of human existence. Freedom of religion is considered as the third most important civil liberty after the right to life and personal liberty and the freedom of speech and expression. The Indian Constitution guarantees freedom of religion and acknowledges the individual’s autonomy in his or her relationship with God. However, the Supreme Court of India, through the creation and continued use of the essentiality test, has tried to reform religion by restricting the scope of this freedom. The judiciary has taken over the role of clergy in determining what essential and non-essential religious practices are. …

Whose Traditions? Which Practices?, Sor-Hoon Tan Jun 2017

Whose Traditions? Which Practices?, Sor-Hoon Tan

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

My response to Tully’s article, “Deparochializing Political Theory and Beyond,” suggests that before introducing students in Asia to comparative political thought, including texts from Asian traditions in Political Theory or Philosophy courses, their education needs to first engage in the critical practice of questioning their own “background horizon of disclosure.” The background horizon of disclosure that needs questioning certainly is not simply constituted by Asian traditions; despite westernized education, it is also not entirely western, insofar as the society they live in continues to be Asian in various ways, and the adopted western institutions and modes of thought have been …

“The Abnihilization Of The Etym”: Finnegans Wake Ii.3 As Oral Poetry In The Age Of Mechanical Reproduction, Joshua Brown

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This thesis argues that Finnegans Wake II.3 reveals a role for a dynamic kind of art to contest the dominant narratives in an age of seemingly static new-media technological saturation. By redeploying resources from ancient oral poetic tradition, Finnegans Wake creates a form of resistance to the totalizing effects of textualized mass culture. Technologically saturated media culture often attempts to encode stable, binary identities into the fabric of sociopolitical reality; Finnegans Wake II.3 contrasts two alternatives to escape this oppressively rigid encoding. Beginning with an extended description of the radio-televisual device in the background of Earwicker’s pub—“their tolvtubular high fidelity …

Minding The Gaps: Deducing Meaning In Sherlock Holmes Fanfiction, Christina M. Miranda Jun 2017

Minding The Gaps: Deducing Meaning In Sherlock Holmes Fanfiction, Christina M. Miranda

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Online fanfiction communities are increasingly coming to light as an independent manifestation of an (often queer) interpretation of popular media. This paper investigates the different causes of this phenomenon, how the participants craft individual meaning that addresses perceived gaps in representation, and the ways in which fanfiction authors and readers work with the boundaries of the original work. Specifically, I reference the subset of the Sherlock Holmes fan community that romantically pairs Sherlock Holmes and John Watson. By analyzing the numbers of fanfiction and providing a reader response and intertextual analysis that delves into specific influential works, the conclusion is …

Semantic Types For Decomposing Evidence Assessment In Decisions On Veterans’ Disability Claims For Ptsd, Vern R. Walker, Nneka Okpara, Ashtyn Hemendinger, Tauseff Ahmed Jun 2017

Semantic Types For Decomposing Evidence Assessment In Decisions On Veterans’ Disability Claims For Ptsd, Vern R. Walker, Nneka Okpara, Ashtyn Hemendinger, Tauseff Ahmed

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This paper presents a semantic analysis for mining arguments or reasoning from the evidence assessment portions (fact-finding portions) of adjudicatory decisions in law. Specifically, we first decompose the reasoning into primary branches, using a rule tree of the substantive issues to be decided. Within each branch, we further decompose argumentation using two main categories: reasoning that deploys special legal rules and reasoning that does not. With respect to special legal rules, we discuss legal presumption rules, sufficiency-of-evidence rules, and the benefit- of-the-doubt rule. Semantic anchors for this decomposition are provided by identifying the inferential roles of sentences – principally evidence …

A Market For Sovereignty? The Roles Of Other States In Self-Determination, Karen Knop Jun 2017

A Market For Sovereignty? The Roles Of Other States In Self-Determination, Karen Knop

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

How can the popular sovereignty associated with international law’s regulation of self-determination (secession) be reconciled with the state’s traditional property-like prerogative to transfer (cede) territory regardless of the inhabitants’ wishes? Joseph Blocher and Mitu Gulati innovatively propose a “market” for sovereignty that would treat secession more like a sale of property, and cession, less.

Existing international law does not conceive of states as potential bidders, buyers, backers, underwriters or investors in a people’s exercise of self-determination. However, international lawyers should not overestimate the differences with Blocher and Gulati’s unconventional proposal. Compared to their idea of market-generated options for sovereignty, the …

Globalization Of Constitutional Identity, Bui Ngoc Son Jun 2017

Globalization Of Constitutional Identity, Bui Ngoc Son

Washington International Law Journal

This Article extends Gary J. Jacobsohn’s theory of constitutional identity to better understand the dynamics of constitutional identity in the era of globalization. The extended theoretical framework features the relation of constitutional globalization to the change of national constitutional identity. Within that framework, this Article offers an original, empirical examination of the case of Vietnam and compares it with other socialist regimes (China, Laos, North Korea, and Cuba). It argues that globalization induces adaption to the socialist constitutional identity. The socialist constitutional identity is adapted by the pragmatic incorporation of fundamental ideas and principles of global constitutionalism. Consequently, the essence …

Haitian Linguistic And Cultural Practices: Critical Meaning-Making Spaces For Haitian Learners, Marie L. Cerat

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is concerned with the effects of the exclusion of Haitian linguistic and cultural practices in the education of Haitian learners. Through qualitative data collection and analysis, a set of texts and narratives in the Haitian Creole language, Rara and Vèvè practices were inventoried, reviewed and described. Moreover, a series of focus groups and ethnographic interviews were conducted with Haitian adolescents and Haitian parents with school age children living in New York. These interviews revealed that Haitians deeply value their cultural knowledge, and view them as resources for knowledge preservation and knowledge production. Textual analysis also shows that Haitians …

Genetic Structure And Diversity Of Western Flower Thrips, Frankliniella Occidentalis In A French Bean Agroecosystem Of Kenya, P. Hondelmann, J. O. Nyasani, S. Subramanian, R. Meyhöfer

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Western flower thrips (WFT) (Frankliniella occidentalis) is an introduced pest that harms French bean production in Kenya and other countries. Since new WFT management approaches are being developed, a closer look at the genetic makeup of WFT populations can give new insights into source habitats, crop colonization patterns or host plant preferences, which are prerequisites for integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. For this purpose, we used six microsatellite loci to analyse the genetic structure, diversity and gene flow of WFT sampled on French beans, intercrops and weeds in Kenyan French bean production areas. The results of this preliminary study indicate …

Shifting Focus: The Role Of Visual Literacy In The Twenty-First Century English Classroom, Bryanna Tester Jun 2017

Shifting Focus: The Role Of Visual Literacy In The Twenty-First Century English Classroom, Bryanna Tester

Masters Theses

Ultimately, the English language arts classroom seeks to help make students “literate” members of society. Due to the dominance of images in twenty-first century communication, the term “literate” has also slowly shifted to include an individual’s ability to effectively and accurately communicate with verbal text as well as with visual images and symbols. Although students are native image-viewers, they are not able to be image-readers without instruction and training on how to critically “read” images. Therefore, an English teacher’s literary curriculum is not strictly bound to the written and spoken word. Instruction in reading and writing written texts are vital …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Onion thrips, Thrips tabaci (Lindeman), is a prominent species infesting onion and tomato in the northern highlands of Tanzania. It causes considerable leaf damage by direct feeding and also transmits the Iris yellow spot virus (IYSV). Hence, one of the objectives of this study was to identify the most resistant onion entries against T. tabaci. One highly resistant (VI038552) and two resistant onion entries (VI038512 and AVON 1067) were identified against T. tabaci. Besides thrips resistance, the bulb size of VI038512 was also equivalent to one of the commercial varieties, Texas. The highly resistant VI038552 recorded the highest yield, followed …
