Altered Sensitivity To Social Gaze In The Fmr1 Premutation And Pragmatic Language Competence, Jessica Klusek, Joseph Schmidt, Amanda J. Fairchild, Ann Porter, Jane E. Roberts Aug 2017

Altered Sensitivity To Social Gaze In The Fmr1 Premutation And Pragmatic Language Competence, Jessica Klusek, Joseph Schmidt, Amanda J. Fairchild, Ann Porter, Jane E. Roberts

Faculty Publications

Background: The FMR1 premutation affects 1:291 women and is associated with a range of cognitive, affective, and physical health complications, including deficits in pragmatic language (i.e., social language). This study investigated attention to eye gaze as a fundamental social-cognitive skill that may be impaired in the FMR1 premutation and could underlie pragmatic deficits. Given the high prevalence of the FMR1 premutation, efforts to define its phenotype and mechanistic underpinnings have significant public health implications. Methods: Thirty-five women with the FMR1 premutation and 20 control women completed an eye-tracking paradigm that recorded time spent dwelling within the eye region in response …

A Protocol For The Administration Of Real-Time Fmri Neurofeedback Training, Matthew Sherwood, Emily E. Diller, Elizabeth Ey, Subhashini Ganapathy, Jeremy T. Nelson, Jason G. Parker Aug 2017

A Protocol For The Administration Of Real-Time Fmri Neurofeedback Training, Matthew Sherwood, Emily E. Diller, Elizabeth Ey, Subhashini Ganapathy, Jeremy T. Nelson, Jason G. Parker

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Neurologic disorders are characterized by abnormal cellular-, molecular-, and circuit-level functions in the brain. New methods to induce and control neuroplastic processes and correct abnormal function, or even shift functions from damaged tissue to physiologically healthy brain regions, hold the potential to dramatically improve overall health. Of the current neuroplastic interventions in development, neurofeedback training (NFT) from functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) has the advantages of being completely non-invasive, non-pharmacologic, and spatially localized to target brain regions, as well as having no known side effects. Furthermore, NFT techniques, initially developed using fMRI, can often be translated to exercises that can …

Conventionalization And Reduction In Natural Language Emergence: An Experimental And Computational Model Investigation, Russell Richie Aug 2017

Conventionalization And Reduction In Natural Language Emergence: An Experimental And Computational Model Investigation, Russell Richie

Doctoral Dissertations

In the emergence of natural languages, two processes typically co-occur: new form-meaning mappings are being conventionalized, and these forms reduce, i.e., shorten, in various ways. Despite this oft-noted co-occurrence, and the existence of theories of conventionalization and reduction separately, there are no explicit, mechanistic, and empirically-motivated theories of the connection between the two processes. To fill this gap, the present dissertation aims to better understand this relationship both empirically and theoretically, with experimental semiotics and agent-based modeling.

In the experiment, eight groups of four hearing, non-signing English-speaking participants were brought into the lab. Quads split into rotating dyads which …

Variability In Pragmatic Abilities In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Iris Chin Aug 2017

Variability In Pragmatic Abilities In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Iris Chin

Doctoral Dissertations

Communication involves information beyond what is coded in the linguistic stimuli produced by a speaker. How individuals are able to extract additional, pragmatic meaning from a speaker’s utterance (i.e., what kind of skills/knowledge might be involved) is relatively understudied. To address this question, the current study examined 7- to 10-year-old typically developing (TD) children and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)’s ability to interpret four different pragmatic devices: conventional implicatures, scalar implicatures, relevance implicatures, and metaphors. We were interested in determining whether variability in children with ASD’s ability to process such devices would be found and if so, whether their …

Some Observations On The Nature Of Insect Names, B. Elwood Montgomery Aug 2017

Some Observations On The Nature Of Insect Names, B. Elwood Montgomery

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A recent study of dragonfly names (Montgomery, 1973) has led to a consideration of insect names, especially ancient and early English names. This interest was aroused, chiefly by the statement in Sarot's study of the folklore of the dragonfly from "A Linguistic Approach" that no recognizable name for dragonflies has been found in Anglo-Saxon, classical Latin or ancient Greek. Any language is capable of supplying names for all objects, including insects, which are recognized by its community of speakers. As so many names for dragonflies have been found in modern languages, (95 in English, over 60 in German, about 40 …

Text In The Natural World: Topics Of Evolutionary Theory Of Literature, Laurence A. Gregorio Aug 2017

Text In The Natural World: Topics Of Evolutionary Theory Of Literature, Laurence A. Gregorio

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

The study of literature has expanded to include an evolutionary perspective. Its premise is that the literary text and literature as an overarching institution came into existence as a product of the same evolutionary process that gave rise to the human species. In this view, literature is an evolutionary adaptation that functions as any other adaptation does, as a means of enhancing survivability and also promoting benefits for the individual and society. Text in the Natural World is an introduction to the theory and a survey of topics pertinent to the evolutionary view of literature. After a polemical, prefatory chapter …

Reflection On Retention: An Evaluation Study On Minority Students’ Success In An Online Nursing Program, Amanda Hawkins, Elizabeth Frander, Melissa Young, Kaylen Deal

Perspectives In Learning

The United States nursing workforce faces a health care challenge for providing culturally competent care to the growing number of racial and ethnic minority groups. According to Gertner et al (2010), cultural competency in health care is defined as providing care to patients with diverse backgrounds to meet the social, cultural and linguistic needs. Research has shown that patients receive a higher level of culturally competent care from nurses who are from their own cultural background. Administrators and faculty working in Schools of Nursing must recognize this important fact and take action to ensure the admissions, progression, and graduation of …

Wild, Tame, And In-Between: Traditional Agricultural Knowledge Of Taiwan Indigenous People, Pei-Lin Yu Aug 2017

Wild, Tame, And In-Between: Traditional Agricultural Knowledge Of Taiwan Indigenous People, Pei-Lin Yu

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many of us would agree that Senator J. William Fulbright’s vision of “a world with a little more knowledge and a little less conflict” will feature healthy ecosystems, appreciation of cultural diversity, and of course, delicious food. However, the world has been moving in the wrong direction over the past century. Today, 75% of the world’s plant food is made up of only 12 species. As of 2010, three (rice, maize, and wheat) provided nearly 60 percent of the calories and proteins that humans derive from plants (F.A.O 2010, 1999) and this trend continues (Khoury et al. 2014). This dramatic …

Passing Illusions: Jewish Visibility In Weimar Germany, Kerry Wallach Aug 2017

Passing Illusions: Jewish Visibility In Weimar Germany, Kerry Wallach

Gettysburg College Faculty Books

Weimar Germany (1919–33) was an era of equal rights for women and minorities, but also of growing antisemitism and hostility toward the Jewish population. This led some Jews to want to pass or be perceived as non-Jews; yet there were still occasions when it was beneficial to be openly Jewish. Being visible as a Jew often involved appearing simultaneously non-Jewish and Jewish. Passing Illusions examines the constructs of German-Jewish visibility during the Weimar Republic and explores the controversial aspects of this identity—and the complex reasons many decided to conceal or reveal themselves as Jewish. Focusing on racial stereotypes, Kerry Wallach …

The Past In The Present: Federal Implementation Of The Native American Graves Protection And Repatriation Act, Erin J. Hudson

Anthropology ETDs

This dissertation examines the implementation of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act by federal agencies. Specifically, it examines the processes that archaeologists, working in different geographic regions and for different federal agencies, use to complete NAGPRA actions and determine cultural affiliation. A total of nine case studies from two regions (US Southwest and Pacific Northwest) and three federal agencies (USDA Forest Service, National Park Service, and US Army Corps of Engineer) were used to document the complete NAGPRA process as it occurs in real situations, to identify the processes and lines of evidence used to complete those actions, …

A Case Study Examining How Experienced Teachers Adopt Culturally Responsive Instruction Through Participating In A Collaborative Inquiry Team, Lara White

Doctoral Dissertations

This participatory action research case study examines how experienced teachers build their understanding and practice of culturally responsive instruction through participating in a collaborative inquiry team (CIT). The nation’s public schools enroll an increasing diverse student population. Culturally responsive instruction (CRI) has shown promise as a mean to raise student achievement, especially student populations from marginalized groups and cultures. This study examines whether and how participating in a CIT can support in-service teachers in developing their understanding and practice of CRI. Research questions were designed to identify the tools, resources, and processes of a collaborative community of educators that can …

The Shifting Ecumenical Landscape At The 2017 Reformation Centenary, Susan K. Wood Aug 2017

The Shifting Ecumenical Landscape At The 2017 Reformation Centenary, Susan K. Wood

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

The 2017 Reformation Centenary is the first commemoration to take place during the ecumenical age and marks fifty years of Lutheran–Roman Catholic dialogue. The current ecumenical landscape is a tale of two cities, one of ecclesial fragmentation that exists simultaneously with new relationships of communion and ecumenical progress. The way forward requires the discernment of deeper commonalities among ecclesial tradition, a correlation of doctrines, a “pastoral ecumenism,” and a hierarchy of virtues in addition to a hierarchy of truths.

The Lived Experience Of Recovery Home Residents: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Dina Chavira Aug 2017

The Lived Experience Of Recovery Home Residents: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, Dina Chavira

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Substance use disorders have had an enormous impact on individuals, families, and communities in the United States. The societal cost of substance abuse in terms of health care, crime, and lost wages is over $700 billion annually. Despite advances in evidence-based treatments, the chronicity of substance use disorders underscores the need to explore and expand long-term aftercare options to prevent relapse after acute residential treatment. Oxford Houses offer an affordable alternative to more costly and limited forms of transitional housing. These self-sustaining, democratically-run recovery homes provide a safe and sober living environment with peer support and no professional staff. Provided …

The Role Of Therapeutic Engagement, Oral Language Proficiency, And Core Learning Indicators On The Effects Of Therapy For Youth With Depression, Amanda E. Wagstaff Aug 2017

The Role Of Therapeutic Engagement, Oral Language Proficiency, And Core Learning Indicators On The Effects Of Therapy For Youth With Depression, Amanda E. Wagstaff

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Youth with depression, particularly ethnic minority youth, have low rates of engagement in mental health services, indicating a large need to better understand the role of engagement in effective treatments for depression (Merikangas et al., 2011). Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the leading psychotherapeutic treatments available for youth with depression (Weisz, McCarty, & Valeri, 2006), but several questions still remain regarding why and in what circumstances this therapy is most appropriate. CBT posits that part of the positive treatment effects is accounted by learning certain cognitive and behavioral skills during and outside of session (i.e., through active homework …

Inferring Character Emotions During Text Comprehension: A Divided Visual Field Study, Blaine Tomkins Aug 2017

Inferring Character Emotions During Text Comprehension: A Divided Visual Field Study, Blaine Tomkins

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

During reading, individuals often need to activate mental representations of a character’s emotional state. Currently, little is known about how readers infer positive and negative character emotional states. Furthermore, the selective involvement of the two cerebral hemispheres in generating emotional inferences is unclear. In the current study, participants read texts that primed either a positive (Experiment 1) or negative (Experiment 2) emotion of a character in a text. Using a divided visual-field paradigm, participants performed a lexical decision task for target words congruent with the character’s emotional state, which were presented to either the left visual field-right hemisphere or right …

Patient-Centered Medical Home Adoption In School-Based Health Centers, Abbey Gregg Aug 2017

Patient-Centered Medical Home Adoption In School-Based Health Centers, Abbey Gregg

Theses & Dissertations

The patient-centered medical home (PCMH) is promoted as a primary care delivery design that can improve health care quality and patient outcomes while controlling health care costs. To achieve PCMH recognition, primary care providers must implement practice-level changes in order to deliver care that is comprehensive, coordinated, accessible, high quality, and whole-person oriented. This practice transformation requires advanced use of health information technology, staff investment in quality improvement and care coordination, and significant investments of both financial and human resources to support these activities. As a safety-net provider, school-based health centers (SBHCs) serve vulnerable children that typically experience barriers to …
