Learning To Be A Lesbian : Identity And Sexuality Formation Among Young Hong Kong Lesbians, Yuk Ying, Sonia Wong
Learning To Be A Lesbian : Identity And Sexuality Formation Among Young Hong Kong Lesbians, Yuk Ying, Sonia Wong
Lingnan Theses
While the LGBT equal rights movements in Hong Kong have become increasingly visible and popular in recent years, and lesbians, when compared to homosexual male, seem to enjoy high visibility in the city’s public space and relevant safety from violent discrimination, their presence in the public sphere continue to be low. Writings by local queer activists and scholars such as Mary Kam Pui Wai (2001) and Denise Tang (2011) point out that instead of violent attacks, since the beginning of local LGBT activism, female have been facing systematic silencing and marginalizing within the community, their presence invisible, and their problems …

Lingnan Theses

Beyond Jurisprudence, Alan Calnan
Beyond Jurisprudence, Alan Calnan
Saint Louis University Law Journal
This article takes a new approach to legal theory. Because it views law as part of a complex natural system, it uses complex systems theory as its central investigative framework. Unlike traditional jurisprudence, which separates human artifacts from nature, complexity theory shows that human and natural systems are interdependent. Such systems cannot be studied in isolation, but require consilience. Consilience unites knowledge from the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities. By merging consilience with complexity theory, the article moves beyond jurisprudence toward “jurisilience.”
Jurisilience shows that law is a complex cultural system caused by complex social systems of …

A Sentiment-Change-Driven Event Discovery System, Lili Zhang, Ying Xie, Guoliang Liu
Published and Grey Literature from PhD Candidates
We present a system that automatically discovers important events that have significantly driven people’s sentiment changes towards a target using Twitter data (i.e. tweets). This system can also provide the time, importance, and description of events that are associated with people’s sentiment changes. In this system, a sentiment classifier is used as the sensor to detect the time points of those changes. It is also used as the filter to effectively eliminate a considerable amount of noisy information and select the most informative tweets to be further analyzed for event descriptions. Discovered events are described from the following aspects, 1) …

In one embodiment, communicating robot intentions to human beings involves determining movements that a robot will make to complete a task, visually communicating a long-term intention of the robot that provides an indication of the movements the robot will make in completing the task, and visually communicating a short-tem intention of the robot that provides an indication of a movement of the robot will make within the next few seconds in working toward completing the task.
Exploring Teacher Candidates’ Civic Efficacy Through Civic Engagement And Critical Literacy In A Literacy Methods Course, Dana M. Karraker
Exploring Teacher Candidates’ Civic Efficacy Through Civic Engagement And Critical Literacy In A Literacy Methods Course, Dana M. Karraker
Theses and Dissertations
Public school spaces play a large role in developing people’s understandings of civic knowledge and responsibility. Teachers, administrators, and policy-makers design school curriculum to reflect the types of citizens they believe a society needs, and thus, determines approaches to teaching and curriculum development (Labaree, 1997). This action research study examined the civic efficacy and critical literacy understandings of seven elementary education teacher candidates enrolled in a content area literacy course. The course and the study were designed using a critical literacy and civic efficacy framework as literacy practices are closely connected to the ways in which people are able to …

TESOL Theses
This study aimed to assess the impact of explicit morphology instruction on Saudi EFL students’ morphological awareness and vocabulary knowledge. The experimental group received for six weeks in their English class morphological lessons that focused on the basic analytical and synthetic word formation rules to increase students’ morphological awareness and help in improving their vocabulary knowledge. On the other hand, the control group received the regular instruction in their English class. At the end of the instruction period, the pre- and post-test scores of the experimental group were compared. Then, the experimental group scores were compared to the control group. …

The Morphosyntax Of Self-Ascription: A Cross-Linguistic Study, Troy Messick
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation investigates cross-linguistic variation in the domain of de se speech and attitude reports and argues for a number of novel generalizations. Chapter 2 introduces data from Telugu and Nuer to establish a new way to express de se attitudes. In both these languages, an embedded third person pronoun controls first person verbal agreement morphology. I propose a model where embedded pronouns can be simultaneously first and third person as advanced by Schlenker (2003) along with the view of syntax-morphology mapping where the morphology can express only a subset of the features present in the syntax. I generalize this …

Rating By Ranking: An Improved Scale For Judgement-Based Labels, Jack O'Neill, Sarah Jane Delany, Brian Mac Namee
Conference papers
Labels representing value judgements are commonly elicited using an interval scale of absolute values. Data collected in such a manner is not always reliable. Psychologists have long recognized a number of biases to which many human raters are prone, and which result in disagreement among raters as to the true gold standard rating of any particular object. We hypothesize that the issues arising from rater bias may be mitigated by treating the data received as an ordered set of preferences rather than a collection of absolute values. We experiment on real-world and artificially generated data, finding that treating label ratings …

Pragmatic Comprehension Of English Refusals By Spanish-English Bilinguals, Clevia Josefina Perez
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study investigated the pragmatic comprehension and production of the speech act of refusals in English by a group of Spanish-English bilinguals (SEB) in comparison with native English speakers (NES), taking into account variables such as length of residency in the L2 environment, type of refusals and level of politeness. Other variables explored included speed of lexical access and working memory. SEB who learned English as adults were divided into two groups (short, long) according to their length of residency in an English language environment. All participants performed a Pragmatic Listening Task (PLT) and an oral production task both involving …

The Phenomenology Of Medico-Legal Causation, Nicholas Hooper
Research Papers, Working Papers, Conference Papers
The language of counterfactual causation employed from the bench obscures the analytical vacuity of the "but for" test This paper takes issue with the consistent recourse to "common sense" as a methodological tool for determining the deeply complex issue of causality Despite manifestly empty gestures to eg robust pragmatism the current approach imposes the dominant values of the judiciary in a manner that perpetuates the current distribution of power Whatever the merits of counterfactual inquiry its legal iteration requires judges to construct a hypothetical narrative about "how things generally happen" This in turn impels a uniquely comprehensive brand of judicial …

The Earth's Atmosphere As A Global Trust: Establishing Proportionate State Responsibility To Maintain, Restore And Sustain The Global Atmosphere, Thomas Boudreau Ph.D.
Environmental and Earth Law Journal (EELJ)
Expanding upon the important work already accomplished by the Paris Agreement (2015), the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) can help create the international legal framework needed by recognizing, in a nonbinding resolution as a first step, the Earth’s atmosphere as a global trust and thus helping to create the necessary legal capacity- building among nation-states to monitor, maintain as well as restore the Earth’s atmosphere for future generations.

The Impact Of Testing Context Of Computer-Adaptive High Stakes Testing On The Performance Of Elementary Students Of Poverty, Curtis R. Wilson Iii
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of testing context, on the academic performance of third-grade students, with a particular interest in schools of poverty. Testing context is the use of technology as a tool in computerized-adaptive standardized testing, students’ technology skills, and the adequacy of school computer lab facilities. Using a causal-comparative design, the researcher examined 54 northwestern elementary schools, ranging in classification from “not applicable under Free Meal by Direct Certification” (low poverty schools) to 95% applicable (high poverty schools). The study found a positive relationship between teachers’ rating of testing conditions and the performance …

Schooled: Hiphop Composition At The Predominantly White University, Tessa Rose Brown
Schooled: Hiphop Composition At The Predominantly White University, Tessa Rose Brown
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation asks what hiphop is doing in predominantly white higher-educational contexts, specifically in composition classrooms. Using ethnographic, autoethnographic, and historical methods, it finds that hiphop’s work in composition classrooms at PWIs is contradictory. This mixed-methods investigation suggests that the contradictory relation of white fans, students, and institutions to hiphop is shaped on the one hand by white listeners’ increasing identification with the historical struggles of African Americans under capitalism, and on the other hand, by disidentification or abjectification of African Americans in an effort to “win” the zero-sum game of capitalism. This contradiction results in a paradoxical situation where …

"Don't Try And Play Me Out!": The Performances And Possibilities Of Digital Black Womanhood, Latoya Lydia Sawyer
Dissertations - ALL
This dissertation explores the practices and possibilities of Black women’s identity performances on social media. Despite claims that the United States is now “post-racial,” in recent years there have been several examples of negative perceptions and hostile receptions to Black women’s discourse and literacy practices on- and offline. Simultaneously, we have seen hashtags (#BlackLivesMatter and #SayHerName) and user-generated videos created by Black women spark movements and create change. This dissertation extends the theoretical framework of online identity performance (Grabill and Pigg) by looking specifically at ways in which Black women perform their identities online and its outcomes. In chapter one, …
