Visual Sentiment Analysis For Review Images With Item-Oriented And User-Oriented Cnn, Quoc Tuan Truong, Hady W. Lauw Oct 2017

Visual Sentiment Analysis For Review Images With Item-Oriented And User-Oriented Cnn, Quoc Tuan Truong, Hady W. Lauw

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Online reviews are prevalent. When recounting their experience with a product, service, or venue, in addition to textual narration, a reviewer frequently includes images as photographic record. While textual sentiment analysis has been widely studied, in this paper we are interested in visual sentiment analysis to infer whether a given image included as part of a review expresses the overall positive or negative sentiment of that review. Visual sentiment analysis can be formulated as image classification using deep learning methods such as Convolutional Neural Networks or CNN. However, we observe that the sentiment captured within an image may be affected …

Pitch Control Of Wind Turbine Through Pid, Fuzzy And Adaptive Fuzzy-Pid Controllers, Silpa Baburajan Oct 2017

Pitch Control Of Wind Turbine Through Pid, Fuzzy And Adaptive Fuzzy-Pid Controllers, Silpa Baburajan

Theses

As the penetration of the wind energy into the electrical power grid is extensively increased, the influence of the wind turbine systems on the frequency and voltage stability becomes more and more significant. Wind turbine rotor bears different types of loads; aerodynamic loads, gravitational loads and centrifugal loads. These loads cause fatigue and vibration in blades, which cause degradation to the rotor blades. These loads can be overcome and the amount of collected power can be controlled using a good pitch controller (PC) which will tune the attack angle of a wind turbine rotor blade into or out of the …

How Interacting With Teacher Feedback Impacts Students’ Writing, Kristen Bankers Saxhaug

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The following research question is investigated in this paper: How does purposeful interaction with teacher feedback impact the writing outcomes of high school students? The literature review explored the topics of writing development, feedback, and motivation and self-efficacy in writing. A mixed methods approach was used to investigate whether purposeful, directed interaction with teacher feedback led to improved outcomes in students’ writing. Participants were a cohort of 36 racially diverse, at-risk students who were behind their grade-level peers in the development of age-appropriate literacy skills in a co-taught intervention English class. The data revealed that teaching students how to interpret …

American Indian Ethnic Studies: A Culturally And Linguistically Responsive Approach To Teaching An American Indian Ethnic Studies Unit, Bryan K. Deiman

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

Ethnic studies courses are designed to tell the stories of ethnic groups who have historically been marginalized in all or many aspects of society in the United States. The purpose of this study was to create a unit for an ethnic studies high school course centered on the American Indian experience. Adhering to the theory of culturally sustaining pedagogy, or culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy, the unit for this course was designed to decentralize whiteness and focus solely on the American Indian perspective. This unit was created with a strong emphasis on community outreach, seeking input on content for lessons …

The Impact Of The Closure Of Open Enrollment On Language Immersion Program, Katie Moss Oct 2017

The Impact Of The Closure Of Open Enrollment On Language Immersion Program, Katie Moss

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate to what lengths the parents of open enrolled students are willing to go, to gain entrance into the Spanish Immersion program, upon the closure of open enrollment to 1% (one percent). Qualitative study results demonstrate that parents are not willing to go to any lengths to obtain enrollment. This significantly rejects the hypothesis that they would be willing to do “whatever it takes” as they communicated upon the initial closure of open enrollment to 1%. The greatest findings were that personal and family ethics had the greatest impact upon how far a …

Critical Literacy: Engaging First Graders In An Exploration Of Race Through Children’S Literature, Kelly Deits Cutler Oct 2017

Critical Literacy: Engaging First Graders In An Exploration Of Race Through Children’S Literature, Kelly Deits Cutler

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

As an educator, I often hear teachers suggest that young children are not “ready” to tackle controversial topics such as race, racism, and racial identity. Reasons are oftentimes stated, such as “that’s not developmentally appropriate” or “they’re too young to understand that concept.” In direct contrast, the last sixty years of educational research indicates that children do understand the concept of race at a very early age (Clark, 1988; Derman-Sparks & Ramsey, 2011; Goodman 1952; Katz, 2013; Proshansky, 1966). Yet often adults, including parents and educators, do not recognize children’s ability to understand race. Most teachers--particularly White teachers--have difficulty talking …

Teaching "In Their Best Interest": Preservice Teachers' Narratives Regarding English Learners, Amanda T. Sugimoto, Kathy Carter, Kathleen J. Stoehr Oct 2017

Teaching "In Their Best Interest": Preservice Teachers' Narratives Regarding English Learners, Amanda T. Sugimoto, Kathy Carter, Kathleen J. Stoehr

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the United States, teachers are increasingly working with English Learners (ELs) in mainstream classrooms. Several areas of focus have been proposed to guide the preparation of teachers for working with ELs, including: language related knowledge, skills, and dispositions. This narrative study examined how field-based experiences shaped 49 preservice teachers' dispositions toward ELs. An iterative and thematic analysis of collected narratives found that preservice teachers often completed their practicum in classrooms that did not model positive dispositions or pedagogical practices toward ELs. These findings have implications for the tasks and experiences given to preservice teachers during their preparation sequence.

The Historical And Social-Cultural Context Of Acculturation Of Moroccan-Dutch, Youssef Azghari, Erna Hooghiemstra, Fons J.R. Van De Vijver Oct 2017

The Historical And Social-Cultural Context Of Acculturation Of Moroccan-Dutch, Youssef Azghari, Erna Hooghiemstra, Fons J.R. Van De Vijver

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Moroccan laborers and their families started migrating to the Netherlands from the 1960s. We used research findings on migration and acculturation to examine the historical and social-cultural context of Moroccan-Dutch. Dutch administration at national, regional, and local level had no integration policy upon their arrival. Later, when many Moroccan-Dutch stayed longer in the Netherlands than anticipated, the Dutch administration favored a multicultural policy based on integration and maintenance of ethnic culture. This contrasted with the Moroccan policy: Moroccans abroad were told not to integrate in Dutch society but to invest in Morocco. Due to the weak outcomes and a negative …

Teaching English To Indian Vernacular Medium Students Through Technology: A Qualitative Study Of Kolkata Jesuit Juniorate Program, Maria Joseph Savariappan Oct 2017

Teaching English To Indian Vernacular Medium Students Through Technology: A Qualitative Study Of Kolkata Jesuit Juniorate Program, Maria Joseph Savariappan

Doctoral Dissertations

The educational system in India is inadequate to meet the modern needs of the Indian students (Lall & House, 2005). Primarily two kinds of education coexist: Vernacular medium and English medium. These styles have pushed many students to a disadvantageous position. The vernacular medium students, due to lack of English proficiency, are not able to do their university studies for the medium of instruction in Indian Universities is English only (Dravid, 2013). It is, therefore, an injustice done to the Indian vernacular medium students.

The last two centuries have seen technology rapidly advancing in all spheres of life (Jerald, 2009). …

Language, Race, And Integration: A Comparative Exploration Of The Sub-Saharan Migrant Experience In Morocco, Madeline Davison Oct 2017

Language, Race, And Integration: A Comparative Exploration Of The Sub-Saharan Migrant Experience In Morocco, Madeline Davison

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper uses a qualitative approach to explain the divide between local and migrant populations in the Moroccan context. This divide is primarily influenced by “feelings of otherness” and is triggered first and foremost by differences in physical appearance—easily identifiable differences upon first impression. Though inspired by a nearly instantaneous arrangement, this divide is fueled further by an inconsistency of language usage between groups. Because there is a wide variety of migrant experiences in this context, it is important to identify some of the differences between these lived experiences. Upon observation, the question, “What are the fundamental differences between migrants’ …

Linguistic Imperialism In Jordan: The Impact Of English Education Curriculum On Cultural Behaviors Of Secondary Students In Amman, Haley Chatwin Oct 2017

Linguistic Imperialism In Jordan: The Impact Of English Education Curriculum On Cultural Behaviors Of Secondary Students In Amman, Haley Chatwin

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study explores the questions of how culturally inclusive curriculum effects the cultural behaviors of secondary students in Amman, Jordan, and how culturally inclusive curriculum effects the attitudes that these students have towards the English language itself. The researcher hypothesized that culturally inclusive curriculum mitigated the dilution of students cultural identities, and effected the students attitudes towards the English language. This study is significant, as English is taught at every school in Jordan, and Jordan has a long history of occupation by an English-speaking country. The researcher conducted the study using the data collection tools of semi-structured interviews, participant observation, …

Water Injustice In Jendouba Governorate, Wilder Mccoy Oct 2017

Water Injustice In Jendouba Governorate, Wilder Mccoy

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Water is a precious resource even in a tropical rainforest, and in a dry country like Tunisia it is essential. Located in the south central region of the Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia, like nearly every other Mediterranean country, faces a stark challenge in providing clean drinking water to its growing population. Compared to its neighbors, Tunisia, with a few minor exceptions, does a good job in meeting this goal. In the rural northwestern governorate of Jendouba, where most of the country’s surface water comes from, there is ironically a dire need for clean drinking water in the rural areas outside the …

Aiding Neocolonialism? Moroccan Ngos, International Actors, And Questions Of Autonomy In Human Rights Advocacy, Neha Patel Oct 2017

Aiding Neocolonialism? Moroccan Ngos, International Actors, And Questions Of Autonomy In Human Rights Advocacy, Neha Patel

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

As development studies have challenged the traditional narrative of Western “humanitarian work” developing the Global South, concerns have been raised about the shifting roles of NGOs as they are incentivized to depoliticize and professionalize in a market dominated by foreign aid. Given the legacy of colonialism and the emergence of systems of domination such as the non-profit industrial complex, NGOs have been explored as a potential avenue of neocolonialism. Based on background research, general observations and interviews with representatives of local non-governmental organizations based in Rabat, this project examines how local organizations advocating for their communities view their relationships with …

Tourism And Representation: Digital Expressions And Implications Of Orientalism, Lily P. Ayau Oct 2017

Tourism And Representation: Digital Expressions And Implications Of Orientalism, Lily P. Ayau

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

As the tourism industry in Morocco expands, so does Morocco’s online presence. Digital representations of Morocco are often written by and geared toward Westerners; these are often projections of an imagined Morocco, one that is informed by Orientalist conceptions of the Arab/Islamic countries. This study aims to analyze a selection of online articles about touring Morocco in an effort to determine how the underlying Orientalist attitudes in these pieces fit into a larger narrative of exploitation and Western dominance.

A Comparative Study Of The Barriers To Hiv Self-Management Among Myanmar Migrant And Han Chinese Women In Yunnan, China, Anna Gaden Oct 2017

A Comparative Study Of The Barriers To Hiv Self-Management Among Myanmar Migrant And Han Chinese Women In Yunnan, China, Anna Gaden

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

HIV has transitioned from high-risk populations to the general population through sexual transmission – now the primary mode of transmission in China – and is currently the biggest public health crisis in China. Those who are not directly involved with commercial sex work (CSW) or intravenous drug use (IDU) are now vulnerable to contraction. Han Chinese women, especially young women, are generally more vulnerable to transmission than their male counterparts, both physically and socially, and the virus affects their lives more deeply. Myanmar migrant women are even more vulnerable, as their migrant status leaves them without support structures or protections …

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

The home environment provides the context for much of a child's early development. Examples of important aspects of the home environment include safety, cleanliness, and opportunities for cognitive stimulation. This study sought to examine the psychometric properties of an adapted form of the Home Observation for the Measurement of the Environment (HOME; Caldwell & Bradley, 1984, 2003) across the eight international sites of the MAL-ED project (Dhaka, Bangladesh; Vellore, India; Bhakatapur, Nepal; Naushahro Feroze, Pakistan; Fortaleza, Brazil; Loreto, Peru; Venda, South Africa; Haydom, Tanzania), to identify a factor structure that fit the data at all sites, and to derive a …

Smart Contracts: Terminology, Technical Limitations And Real World Complexity, Eliza Mik Oct 2017

Smart Contracts: Terminology, Technical Limitations And Real World Complexity, Eliza Mik

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

If one is to believe the popular press and many “technical writings,” blockchains create not only a perfect transactional environment but also obviate the need for banks, lawyers and courts. The latter will soon be replaced by smart contracts: unbiased and infallible computer programs that form, perform and enforce agreements. Predictions of future revolutions must, however, be distinguished from the harsh reality of the commercial marketplace and the technical limitations of blockchains. The fact that a technological solution is innovative and elegant need not imply that it is commercially useful or legally viable. Apart from attempting a terminological “clean-up” surrounding …

Lack Of Consensus Among Sentiment Analysis Tools: A Suitability Study For Sme Firms, A Connelly, M Palomino, V Kuri Oct 2017

Lack Of Consensus Among Sentiment Analysis Tools: A Suitability Study For Sme Firms, A Connelly, M Palomino, V Kuri

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are a large and integral part of the UK’s economy, with over 99% of all Britain’s businesses classified as small or medium. Supporting the needs of SMEs across the UK has become crucial, while the demands for software tools placed by such businesses keep growing. We are particularly interested in the case of tools for sentiment analysis, because such tools have emerged lately as a good prospect for SMEs to turn data into opportunities. We have compared five of the most well-regarded sentiment analysis tools, and have concluded that none of them is sufficiently reliable …

Dispatches From Flyover Country: Four Appraisals Of Impacts Of Trump’S Immigration Policy On Families, Schools, And Communities, Edmund T. Hamann, Cara Morgenson Oct 2017

Dispatches From Flyover Country: Four Appraisals Of Impacts Of Trump’S Immigration Policy On Families, Schools, And Communities, Edmund T. Hamann, Cara Morgenson

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

A university professor and high school ESL teacher, both based in Lincoln Nebraska, each write two short essays that detail implications of the Trump administration immigration policies for students, teachers, schools, and communities. The first two dispatches come from the transition period (after Trump won but while Obama still presided) while the latter two come from the 50-day mark of the Trump presidency. Juxtaposing voices contrasts overarching impact with the local; juxtaposing chronologies allows comparison of political promises and threats to early actions and reactions.

Safeguarding Pabalat-Wrapped Pastillas In The Philippines: Problems And Possibilities Of Community Participation, Patricia Gonzalez Sep 2017

Safeguarding Pabalat-Wrapped Pastillas In The Philippines: Problems And Possibilities Of Community Participation, Patricia Gonzalez

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

This article describes the Philippine foodway and craft form of pabalat-wrapped pastillas by examining the different communities involved in its practice and preservation. It analyzes how the participatory framework reshapes the authorized heritage discourse and argues for a more pragmatic conceptualization of community participation that recognizes the different kinds of communities involved in heritage work, shows sensitivity to the politics at play, and aims at parity among actors—not exclusion. Tracing the history of borlas de pastillas and assessing its uses in tourism demonstrations, festivals, training programs and museum exhibits reveals the problematic issues of disinheritance, dissonance, memory, and ownership that …

Musicalization: Early Childhood Music Access, Discourse, And Praxis In Nyc Charter Schools, 2014-2015, Andrew Aprile Sep 2017

Musicalization: Early Childhood Music Access, Discourse, And Praxis In Nyc Charter Schools, 2014-2015, Andrew Aprile

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Over the past two decades, charter schools have become a hallmark of education reform in the United States. Concurrent with this movement is the increasing prominence of high stakes testing. While much research has sought to compare the effectiveness of charter schools and traditional public schools in terms of standardized assessments, scant attention has been paid to the role of arts and music in charter schools, and little has been done to distinguish the distinct strands of the charter school movement. Given what we know about the importance of music education and the growth of charter schools, it was the …

Syntax And Semantics Of Perceptual Representation, James K. Quilty-Dunn Sep 2017

Syntax And Semantics Of Perceptual Representation, James K. Quilty-Dunn

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation is a defense of perceptual pluralism, the thesis that perceptual systems deliver multiple types of representations including those used in thought. In particular, it argues that perceptual systems output iconic (i.e., image-like, analog) representations as well as discursive (i.e., language-like, digital) states. A central thesis is that perceptual representations of objects are propositional and composed of concepts. It also develops a compositional syntax of iconic representation called the coordination model, according to which icons are sets of primitive parts, each of which determines values along multiple analog feature dimensions simultaneously. The dissertation supports the conclusion that perceptual …

A Stylistic Analysis Of The Psychological Conflict In Poe's 'The Tell-Tale Heart', Hello Abbas Mahmoud, Hibbe Moussadak Muslim Sep 2017

A Stylistic Analysis Of The Psychological Conflict In Poe's 'The Tell-Tale Heart', Hello Abbas Mahmoud, Hibbe Moussadak Muslim

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Portraying meaning is of more importance than using the right words only. This is what Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was very well aware of. Within the short story The Tell-Tale Heart that consists of about four pages, Poe used 489 punctuation marks, a very significant number. This paper attempts to stylistically analyze the meaning behind such punctuations, and how they represent the psychological conflict of the main character, thus using Freud’s, along with a thorough theoretical evaluation on both the linguistic and literary dimension.

The Humorous Addition Of The Discourse Of Faith In The Holy Quran, Ali Farhan Jawad Sep 2017

The Humorous Addition Of The Discourse Of Faith In The Holy Quran, Ali Farhan Jawad

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The researcher addressed a phenomenon that was raised in the rhetorical critical discourse of the Arabs, and tried to find it in the Qur’anic discourse that opened up to a miraculous expressive system. He is found in the sayings of scholars - such as Al-Jahiz (d. 255 AH), Al-Hatimi (d. 388 AH), Ibn Sinan Al-Khafaji (d. 466 AH), Al-Muzaffar bin Al-Fadl Al-Alawi (d. 656 AH), Ibn Rasheeq Al-Qayrawani (d. 463 AH) and others - a broad application on the discourse of faith and the attributes of believers in the Wise Remembrance, and the effect of substitution in choosing words. Descent And Ascent In Hayden's Symbolic Elegy “The Diver”, Saad Najim Al-Kafaji, Nour Abdul-Kadhim Abdul-Alli Auda Al-Rikabi Sep 2017

Descent And Ascent In Hayden's Symbolic Elegy “The Diver”, Saad Najim Al-Kafaji, Nour Abdul-Kadhim Abdul-Alli Auda Al-Rikabi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Mourning and suffering are central topics within Robert Hayden’s poem. He has introduced into the canon of elegy a special kind of mourning – intractable work of mourning. Hayden colors his poetics of loss with the special work and dilemmas of his black consciousness. Therefore, this paper gives an interpretive analysis of one of his most important elegies “The Diver,” which would serve as a methodological paradigm for the literary analysis of Hayden’s elegies and elegiac texts in general.

Creating An Unbroken Line Of Becoming In Live Music Performance, Bonnie B. Mcalvin Sep 2017

Creating An Unbroken Line Of Becoming In Live Music Performance, Bonnie B. Mcalvin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The dissertation provides an approach to the pedagogy of musical expression in applied music study. Exercises are provided which support a student’s mastery of the mechanics of grouping, and this mastery is put to work in an adaptation of the work of the great Russian acting teacher, Constantine Stanislavski. Mapping of embodiment schema in the manner of Lakoff and Johnson (1980) is asserted as a useful interface between grouped pitch objects and meaning; mappings are utilized by the instrumental music performer in the same manner as Stanislavski taught his acting students to utilize given circumstances. The discourse situates all of …
