The Ancient Waldenses: Did The Reformation Predate Luther?, P. Gerard Damsteegt Oct 2017

The Ancient Waldenses: Did The Reformation Predate Luther?, P. Gerard Damsteegt

Faculty Publications

While significant attempts to reform the Roman Catholic Church had taken place before Martin Luther, Luther with his 1517 work, the Ninety-Five Theses, is widely acknowledged to have started the Reformation. But there were others, before Luther, who preached similar reforms but did not succeed in changing the Roman Church of their time. To the names of Jan Hus, Peter Waldo, and John Wycliffe we may also add a nearly forgotten group of reformers—the ancient Waldenses.

Biculturalism, Bilingualism, & Executive Function Among U.S. Latinos: Implications For Cognitive Reserve, Leticia G. Vallejo Oct 2017

Biculturalism, Bilingualism, & Executive Function Among U.S. Latinos: Implications For Cognitive Reserve, Leticia G. Vallejo

Dissertations (1934 -)

The current study was an exploratory investigation of the cultural constructs of biculturalism and bilingualism as predictors of executive function among a community-based sample of 25 older adult Latinos living in the U.S. The potential moderating effects of education and bicultural identity integration were also examined. Using regression analyses, biculturalism and bilingualism were examined independently as predictors of performance on three separate tasks of executive function: trail making tests, a phonemic fluency task, and a clock drawing task. Bilingualism was not found to predict performance on any of the executive functioning tasks. In the overall sample, biculturalism also was not …

Christus Exemplar: The Politics Of Virtue In Lactantius, Jason Matthew Gehrke Oct 2017

Christus Exemplar: The Politics Of Virtue In Lactantius, Jason Matthew Gehrke

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation offers an historical and doctrinal account of Lactantius’s principal work, The Divine Institutes. Lactantius’s opening remarks shape the central question: Why does he respond to violent political suppression with an elite discourse on virtue (virtus); and how does that discourse address Lactantius’s persecutors from the perspective of his Christian predecessors? To answer the question, this dissertation tells the story of how “power theology,” received through the classical tradition, came to ground Latin moral, political, and religious discourses, first among traditional Roman “pagans,” and then in the pre-Nicene Latin Christianity Lactantius represented in the era of Diocletian and Constantine. …

Word Sense Determination From Wikipedia Data Using Neural Networks, Qiao Liu Oct 2017

Word Sense Determination From Wikipedia Data Using Neural Networks, Qiao Liu

Master's Projects

Many words have multiple meanings. For example, “plant” can mean a type of living organism or a factory. Being able to determine the sense of such words is very useful in natural language processing tasks, such as speech synthesis, question answering, and machine translation. For the project described in this report, we used a modular model to classify the sense of words to be disambiguated. This model consisted of two parts: The first part was a neural-network-based language model to compute continuous vector representations of words from data sets created from Wikipedia pages. The second part classified the meaning of …

Improve And Implement An Open Source Question Answering System, Salil Shenoy

Master's Projects

A question answer system takes queries from the user in natural language and returns a short concise answer which best fits the response to the question. This report discusses the integration and implementation of question answer systems for English and Hindi as part of the open source search engine Yioop. We have implemented a question answer system for English and Hindi, keeping in mind users who use these languages as their primary language. The user should be able to query a set of documents and should get the answers in the same language. English and Hindi are very different when …

Assessing The Factor Structure Of The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, And Cumulative Effect Of Abuse And Neglect On Mental Health Among Adolescents In Conflict-Affected Burundi, Ruby Charak, Jtvm De Jong, Lidewyde H. Berckmoes, Herman Ndayisaba, Ria Reis

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

The present study aimed to examine the factor structure of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ; Bernstein & Fink, 1998), highlight rates of abuse and neglect among Burundian adolescents, compare these rates with those found in high-income nations, and examine the cumulative effect of multiple types of abuse and neglect on depression and PTSD symptoms. Participants were 231 adolescents and youth (M = 14.9, SD = 1.99, 58.4% female) from five provinces of Burundi, a country in Central Africa affected by war and political violence. Translation and back-translation of the CTQ was carried out to obtain an adaptation of CTQ …

Why We Should Have Seen That Coming: Comments On Microsoft’S Tay “Experiment,” And Wider Implications, K. W. Miller, Marty J. Wolf, Frances S. Grodzinsky Oct 2017

Why We Should Have Seen That Coming: Comments On Microsoft’S Tay “Experiment,” And Wider Implications, K. W. Miller, Marty J. Wolf, Frances S. Grodzinsky

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper we examine the case of Tay, the Microsoft AI chatbot that was launched in March, 2016. After less than 24 hours, Microsoft shut down the experiment because the chatbot was generating tweets that were judged to be inappropriate since they included racist, sexist, and anti-Semitic language. We contend that the case of Tay illustrates a problem with the very nature of learning software (LS is a term that describes any software that changes its program in response to its interactions) that interacts directly with the public, and the developer’s role and responsibility associated with it. We make …

The Search For Third Options In A Two-Bathroom Society, Sharon R. Cruz Oct 2017

The Search For Third Options In A Two-Bathroom Society, Sharon R. Cruz

Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review

The note examines the systemic discrimination faced by transgender individuals, particularly in access to bathrooms and prison housing, arguing that such treatment reflects broader societal and legal failures to recognize and protect gender identity. It critiques binary policies that perpetuate harm and advocates for inclusive measures to ensure equal rights and safety. The analysis underscores the legal system's evolving understanding of gender identity and the urgent need for enforceable protections.

Developmental Lead And/Or Prenatal Stress Exposures Followed By Different Types Of Behavioral Experience Result In The Divergence Of Brain Epigenetic Profiles In A Sex, Brain Region, And Time-Dependent Manner: Implications For Neurotoxicology., Deborah A. Cory-Slechta, Marissa Sobolewski, Garima Varma, Jay S. Schneider

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Over a lifetime, early developmental exposures to neurocognitive risk factors, such as lead (Pb) exposures and prenatal stress (PS), will be followed by multiple varied behavioral experiences. Pb, PS and behavioral experience can each influence brain epigenetic profiles. Our recent studies show a greater level of complexity, however, as all three factors interact within each sex to generate differential adult variation in global post-translational histone modifications (PTHMs), which may result in fundamentally different consequences for life-long learning and behavioral function. We have reported that PTHM profiles differ by sex, brain region and time point of measurement following developmental exposures to …

“I Am Undocumented And A New Yorker”: Affirmative City Citizenship And New York City’S Idnyc Program, Amy C. Torres Oct 2017

“I Am Undocumented And A New Yorker”: Affirmative City Citizenship And New York City’S Idnyc Program, Amy C. Torres

Fordham Law Review

The power to confer legal citizenship status is possessed solely by the federal government. Yet the courts and legal theorists have demonstrated that citizenship encompasses factors beyond legal status, including rights, inclusion, and political participation. As a result, even legal citizens can face barriers to citizenship, broadly understood, due to factors including their race, class, gender, or disability. Given this multidimensionality, the city, as the place where residents carry out the tasks of their daily lives, is a critical space for promoting elements of citizenship. This Note argues that recent city municipal identification-card programs have created a new form of …

Testing The Double-Deficit Hypothesis In Arabic Language Among Emirati Students In Grade-3, Mahmoud Fahid Mohammad Gharaibeh Oct 2017

Testing The Double-Deficit Hypothesis In Arabic Language Among Emirati Students In Grade-3, Mahmoud Fahid Mohammad Gharaibeh

Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to test the validity of the double-deficit hypothesis as applied to a sample of third-grade Arabic-speaking students in the United Arab Emirates. The double-deficit hypothesis postulates that individuals with a combination of Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) and Phonological Awareness (PA) deficits will tend to have worse reading ability than individuals with either a RAN deficit, a PA deficit, or no deficit. Thus, the double-deficit hypothesis has been advanced as an explanation of dyslexia. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the essential feature of data in the study, and a correlational study design was applied …

The Case Against Oral Argument: The Effects Of Confirmation Bias On The Outcome Of Selected Cases In The Seventh Circuit Court Of Appeals, Christine M. Venter Oct 2017

The Case Against Oral Argument: The Effects Of Confirmation Bias On The Outcome Of Selected Cases In The Seventh Circuit Court Of Appeals, Christine M. Venter

Journal Articles

Scholars have long been divided over the role, function, and significance, if any, of oral argument in judicial decision-making.' Federal courts seem similarly divided, as some circuits routinely grant oral argument in almost every case, while others grant oral argument in only a small fraction of appeals. This divide should not be dismissed as merely an idiosyncratic debate or as a response to excessive workload, particularly when one considers that approximately 53,000 appeals were filed in federal courts of appeals in the year ending September 30, 2016.2 Since the Supreme Court grants certiorari in only approximately eighty cases each year, …

A Family Approach To Emergent Reading And Writing, Amanda Jones Oct 2017

A Family Approach To Emergent Reading And Writing, Amanda Jones

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

The research question addressed in this project was, how can adult education programming be developed to support parents of emergent readers and writers? It discusses the importance of emergent literacy, brain development, and the role of parents in their child’s development. The stages of emergent literacy, including milestones of child’s development are included. The research of Malcolm Knowles is the framework used in order to create a presentation that supports literacy in the home. Specifically, the six assumptions of andragogy (adult learning) from Knowles’s theory are identified and described.

Framework For Building Community In 21st Century Intermediate Elementary Classrooms, Scott Norman Oct 2017

Framework For Building Community In 21st Century Intermediate Elementary Classrooms, Scott Norman

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

This capstone project focuses on the question: How can intermediate elementary teachers create student environments that foster socialemotional growth? Educators are increasingly cognizant of the impact of socialemotional learning on students, especially within the intermediate elementary grades. Chapter One provides a background and rationale that led to the focus of the research and project. Chapter Two contains a literature review that highlights the many facets of a thriving classroom community with a particular focus on the development of empathy and resilience, including the significant impact of the teacherstudent relationship. Popular socialemotional curricula are profiled, and the significantly positive impact …

Advancing Communication And Collaboration Between Multilingual And Special Education Departments: A Web-Based Model To Serve Dual Eligible Students, Stacy Severson Oct 2017

Advancing Communication And Collaboration Between Multilingual And Special Education Departments: A Web-Based Model To Serve Dual Eligible Students, Stacy Severson

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

There was at the time the project commenced, an unmistakable chasm not only between the two departments within the author’s school district, but also in literature in general, and the author’s goal was to create a living document where the two areas of expertise converged. The research question asked in this project was, how can communication between ESL (English as a second language) teachers and special education staff be improved to better serve dual eligible students? It documents one teacher’s creation of a website designed to assist ESL teachers who work with students who qualify for both ESL and special …

Tracking Privilege-Preserving Epistemic Pushback In Feminist And Critical Race Philosophy Classes, Alison Bailey Oct 2017

Tracking Privilege-Preserving Epistemic Pushback In Feminist And Critical Race Philosophy Classes, Alison Bailey

Faculty Publications - Philosophy

Classrooms are unlevel knowing fields, contested terrains where knowledge and ignorance are produced and circulate with equal vigor, and where members of dominant groups are accustomed to having an epistemic home-terrain advantage. My project focuses on one form of resistance that regularly surfaces in discussions with social-justice content. Privilege-preserving epistemic pushback is a variety of willful ignorance that many members of dominant groups engage in when asked to consider both the lived and structural injustices that members of marginalized groups experience daily. I argue that this dominant form of resistance is neither an expression of skepticism nor a critical-thinking practice. …

Predicting The Brexit Vote By Tracking And Classifying Public Opinion Using Twitter Data, Julio C. Amador Diaz Lopez, Sofia Collignon-Delmar, Kenneth Benoit, Akitaka Matsuo

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We use 23M Tweets related to the EU referendum in the UK to predict the Brexit vote. In particular, we use user-generated labels known as hashtags to build training sets related to the Leave/Remain campaign. Next, we train SVMs in order to classify Tweets. Finally, we compare our results to Internet and telephone polls. This approach not only allows to reduce the time of hand-coding data to create a training set, but also achieves high level of correlations with Internet polls. Our results suggest that Twitter data may be a suitable substitute for Internet polls and may be a useful …

A Conceptual Framework For Analyzing Students' Feedback, Venky Shankararaman, Swapna Gottipati, Sandy Gan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In academic institutions it is normal practice that at the end of each term, students are required to complete a questionnaire that is designed to gather students’perceptions of the instructor and their learning experience in the course. This questionnaire comprises of Likert-scale questions and qualitative questions. One of the important goals of this exercise is to enable the instructor and the senior management to examine the feedback and then enhance students’ learning experience. In most universities, including our own, a lot of attention is paid to the quantitative feedback, which is summarized and statistical comparisons are computed, analysed and presented. However, the …
