Artificial Intelligence: Application Today And Implications Tomorrow, Sean Semmler, Zeeve Rose
Artificial Intelligence: Application Today And Implications Tomorrow, Sean Semmler, Zeeve Rose
Duke Law & Technology Review
This paper analyzes the applications of artificial intelligence to the legal industry, specifically in the fields of legal research and contract drafting. First, it will look at the implications of artificial intelligence (A.I.) for the current practice of law. Second, it will delve into the future implications of A.I. on law firms and the possible regulatory challenges that come with A.I. The proliferation of A.I. in the legal sphere will give laymen (clients) access to the information and services traditionally provided exclusively by attorneys. With an increase in access to these services will come a change in the role that …
Ethics, Law Firms, And Legal Education, Milton C. Regan Jr.
Ethics, Law Firms, And Legal Education, Milton C. Regan Jr.
Maine Law Review
A rash of recent corporate scandals has once again put professional ethics in the spotlight. It's hard to pick up the Wall Street Journal each day and not read that authorities have launched a new investigation or that additional indictments are imminent. Stories of financial fraud and outright looting have galvanized the public and shaken the economy. What ethical lessons can we draw from these events? Two explanations seem especially prominent. The first is a story of individuals without an adequate moral compass. Some people's greed and ambition were unchecked by any internal ethical constraints. For such deviants, no amount …

Court Reform With Chinese Characteristics, Margaret Y.K. Woo
Court Reform With Chinese Characteristics, Margaret Y.K. Woo
Washington International Law Journal
In Court Reform on Trial: Why Simple Solutions Fail, Malcolm Feeley identified a number of obstacles that undermine reforms of the United States court system. Feeley’s proposed solution was to adopt a problem-oriented “rights strategy”—letting the courts themselves solve their problems through litigation. This is because litigation is a forum in which courts are well placed to identify specific problems and devise pragmatic solutions. This Article takes a look at this proposition in the context of court reforms in China and concludes that courts (and law) are also a reflection of national goals and identity. Any reforms to a …

Advance Toward "People's Court" In South Korea, Yong Chul Park
Washington International Law Journal
Since 2008, criminal jury trials have been implemented in South Korea with the Citizen Participation in Criminal Trials Act. Under the Act, defendants have the option to choose a jury trial over a bench trial, although jury verdicts, as well as sentencing opinions rendered by a jury, are not binding on the court pursuant to Article 46(2) of the Act. While Korea’s adoption of a criminal jury trial was an ambitious move toward judicial reform, it has faced serious obstacles and has had limited influence over the Korean judicial system. In this Article, I use the five stages of planned …

Traditional literacy education in the U.S. relies exclusively on language-based models. This can be particularly challenging for English language learners, who often find themselves bound by the constraints of the English language and limited in their expressions of thought and emotion. Current research on English language teaching, largely targeted towards native English-speaking students, suggests that incorporating various alternate modes of communication and representation improves literacy learning. Studies that address English language learning for non-native speakers are sparse. The purpose of this arts-based, qualitative, descriptive study is to fill this gap in the literature. Using collage making as a communicative mode, …

The evaluation has been undertaken in collaboration with Cuyahoga County and the City of Cleveland. This report focuses on one of the more important questions posed in building a microgrid: what is the marginal value of reliable power to end users?

Food Law & Policy: An Essential Part Of Today's Legal Academy, Emily M. Broad Leib, Baylen J. Linnekin
Journal of Food Law & Policy
This Article updates the authors’ seminal 2014 Wisconsin Law Review article, "Food Law & Policy: The Fertile Field’s Origins and First Decade," which was the first scholarly work to detail the fascinating origins and explosive growth of the legal field of Food Law & Policy. Using the same ten criteria the authors developed to measure the growth of Food Law & Policy for the 2014 article, this Article measures and details the field’s impressive growth since that time.

Disability & Aging
The goal of this study was to capture information about the amount of money Maine’s older adults have lost to financial exploitation, along with information about those exploited, the perpetrators of financial exploitation, the type of loss, and amount of money lost. This report summarizes key findings emerging from this analysis. In particular, we found that, when compared to Maine’s general population of adults age 60 and older, the victims of financial exploitation served by Maine's Adult Protective Services (APS) and Legal Services for the Elderly (LSE) are more likely to be age 80 and older, female; and widowed, single, …

Video Creation: Transforming Education To Meet The Needs Of Bedside Nurses, Shelly Pignataro, Marilyn Moonan, Shauna Memmolo
General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)
Nursing professional development (NPD) practitioners need to meet the needs of the learner while accounting for their generational differences and learning style preference. The NPD practitioners identified the need for education related to the use of halo traction in the pediatric patient population and collaborated with orthopedic experts to develop an educational video series to address the gaps in nursing knowledge. This video series needed to be available to all nurses 24 hours a day regardless of their location which lead to the development of a staff nurse educational video channel on YouTube. This inter-professional collaborative effort resulted in staff …

Almost Home: An Interim Solution To Homelessness, Daleen M. Pearse
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In 2015 there were 4,627 homeless individuals unsheltered in Santa Clara County (Home Not Found, 2015). With very few housing options available many homeless individuals are forced to camp illegally in conditions that are unsafe and inhumane. The Gilroy Compassion Center has addressed the need for an interim solution to homelessness with its Almost Home Camping Program. This program provides stability to individuals who participate by providing transitional housing in a campground setting as an alternative to camping illegally. Participants address their own personal barriers whether it is substance abuse, mental or physical health, as well as other barriers identified …
