Background There has been an increased focus towards improving quality of care within the NHS in the last 15 years; as part of this, there has been an emphasis on the importance of patient feedback within policy, through National Service Frameworks and the Quality and Outcomes Framework. The development and administration of large-scale national patient surveys to gather representative data on patient experience, such as the national GP Patient Survey in primary care, has been one such initiative. However, it remains unclear how the survey is used by patients and what impact the data may have on practice. Objectives Our …

Mature Women And The Edd: Changing Identity And Family Relationships, Louise Webber, Nick Pratt, John Hilsdon

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This project investigated the impact of postgraduate study on mature women students and their families. It built on my previous EdD thesis research with Foundation Degree (FD) students regarding HE study for mature women, identity change and family relationships. My previous findings showed women's identity and confidence changed, this then affected family relationships through a change in roles, changes to childcare approaches, changes in attitude and the perspective of woman students which often rubbed off onto husbands (Webber, 2015). Husbands and children were good producers of family capital and provided capital in the forms of social, economic, cultural and emotional …

Amplitude, Latency, And Peak Velocity In Accommodation And Disaccommodation Dynamics, Aj Del Águila-Carrasco, Jj Esteve-Taboada, E Papadatou, T Ferrer-Blasco, R Montés-Micó

School of Health Professions

The aim of this work was to ascertain whether there are differences in amplitude, latency, and peak velocity of accommodation and disaccommodation responses when different analysis strategies are used to compute them, such as fitting different functions to the responses or for smoothing them prior to computing the parameters. Accommodation and disaccommodation responses from four subjects to pulse changes in demand were recorded by means of aberrometry. Three different strategies were followed to analyze such responses: fitting an exponential function to the experimental data; fitting a Boltzmann sigmoid function to the data; and smoothing the data. Amplitude, latency, and peak …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Aggregations of living unattached corallines, previously often referred to as nodules, were given the name rhodoliths by Bosselini and Ginsburg ( 1971 ). Adey and MacIntyre ( 1973 ) provided an early discussion of their genesis and distribution. Such aggregations have long been known as maerl in the North East Atlantic, a Breton term for unattached thalli that lack a shell or pebble core (Irvine and Chamberlain 1994 ). Here, we provide an overview of rhodolith/maerl occurrence in the colder/temperate waters of the North Atlantic and summarize the distribution, species composition, biodiversity and ecological importance of these habitats.

Do Glucocorticoids Predict Fitness? Linking Environmental Conditions, Corticosterone And Reproductive Success In The Blue Tit, Cyanistes Caeruleus, L. J. Henderson, N. P. Evans, B. J. Heidinger, K. A. Herborn, K. E. Arnold

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Glucocorticoids, including corticosterone (CORT), have been suggested to provide a physiological link between ecological conditions and fitness. Specifically, CORT, which is elevated in response to harsh conditions, is predicted to be correlated with reduced fitness. Yet, empirical studies show that CORT can be non-significantly, positively and negatively linked with fitness. Divergent environmental conditions between years or study systems may influence whether CORT is linked to fitness. To test this, we monitored free-living blue tits ( Cyanistes caeruleus ) during breeding over 3 years. We quantified foraging conditions during brood rearing, and examined whether they were correlated with parental baseline CORT …

The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, Colleen Arthur Jan 2017

The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment, Colleen Arthur

UROP Posters

The aim of this paper is to look into the human rights violations committed by the United States against the black men during the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment as well as touch on the broader concept of racial medicine. In addition, my goal is to dismantle the pretense society may hold about the United States and the moral high ground it claims to stand on. In order to accomplish this goal, I will make parallels about atrocities committed by the United States on the African-American population to those committed by the Nazis on the Jewish population in Germany. I will first …

Can A Layer Of Antimicrobial Agents Be Placed Around Breast Implants To Prevent Staph Infections From Occurring?, Valerie L. Tran Jan 2017

Can A Layer Of Antimicrobial Agents Be Placed Around Breast Implants To Prevent Staph Infections From Occurring?, Valerie L. Tran

UROP Posters

The most common infection that occurs after breast augmentation is a staph infection. Currently, there are only three ways to treat this type of infection, all of which treat the breast implant after the infection has developed. The first option is to treat the infection with an oral antibiotic. If this doesn’t completely rid the infection, then intravenous antibiotics are used. If this too doesn’t remove the infection, then surgery will be performed to remove the breast implant and a new implant will be inserted. Although, these options have a low mortality rate, the success rate of completely getting rid …

Microplastic Ingestion In Fish Larvae In The Western English Channel, Madeleine Steer, Matthew Cole, Richard C. Thompson, Penelope K. Lindeque Jan 2017

Microplastic Ingestion In Fish Larvae In The Western English Channel, Madeleine Steer, Matthew Cole, Richard C. Thompson, Penelope K. Lindeque

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Microplastics have been documented in marine environments worldwide, where they pose a potential risk to biota. Environmental interactions between microplastics and lower trophic organisms are poorly understood. Coastal shelf seas are rich in productivity but also experience high levels of microplastic pollution. In these habitats, fish have an important ecological and economic role. In their early life stages, planktonic fish larvae are vulnerable to pollution, environmental stress and predation. Here we assess the occurrence of microplastic ingestion in wild fish larvae. Fish larvae and water samples were taken across three sites (10, 19 and 35 km from shore) in the …

Environment: A Journey On Plastic Seas, Richard Thompson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

A voyage through plastic oceans. Richard Thompson applauds a chronicle alerting the world to marine polymer pollution. The story of a voyage bearing witness to plastic pollution in the oceans, Junk Raft is a stimulating, thought-provoking and factually grounded read. Science educator and researcher Marcus Eriksen’s navigational feat is gripping — 88 days crossing some 4,000 kilometres of open ocean between Los Angeles and Hawaii, on a raft crafted from 15,000 plastic bottles lashed into fishing nets. But it is more. Woven through the chronicle are two equally fascinating storylines: of Eriksen’s evolution from soldier to head of the environmental …

Changes In Depressive Symptoms Among Older Adults With Multiple Chronic Conditions: Role Of Positive And Negative Social Supports, Sangnam Ahn, Seonghoon Kim, Hongmei Zhang

Research Collection School Of Economics

Depression severely affects older adults in the United States. As part of the social environment, significant social support was suggested to ameliorate depression among older adults. We investigate how varying forms of social support moderate depressive symptomatology among older adults with multiple chronic conditions (MCC). Data were analyzed using a sample of 11,400 adults, aged 65 years or older, from the 2006–2012 Health and Retirement Study. The current study investigated the moderating effects of positive or negative social support from spouse, children, other family, and friends on the association between MCC and depression. A linear mixed model with repeated measures …

Comments On “Rich Debt, Poor Debt: Assessing Household Indebtedness And Debt Repayment Capacity”, Sock Yong Phang

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper assesses the system-wide impacts of Malaysia’s rising household debt.Malaysia’s household debt-to-GDP ratio (HDGR) increased from 76% in 2009 to 89%in 2016. This increase has raised concerns regarding the implications for householdfinancial resilience and banking system stability. The paper uses a micro-level datasetthat integrates income and debt to calculate financial margin (FM) and the probabilityof default (PD) for individuals at the baseline, and when subject to various shocks. This allows the estimation of loss to lenders in the event of default, and from there, the banking system’s debt-at-risk. The findings show that default is more likely forhouseholds with a debt service …

Master Narratives And The Pictorial Construction Of Otherness: Anti-Semitic Images In The Third Reich And Beyond, Michael Ranta Jan 2017

Master Narratives And The Pictorial Construction Of Otherness: Anti-Semitic Images In The Third Reich And Beyond, Michael Ranta

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Collective identities of the Self (or Ego) vs. the Other are not only conveyed in and between cultures through verbal discourse but also through pictures. Such cultural constructions are often established and consolidated by storytelling, where, briefly put, events or situations are temporally ordered. Pictures and visual artworks may be powerful narrative resources for establishing and consolidating cultural stances and framing actions. In this paper, I shall focus upon demarcation efforts of Jews as the Other from the Middle Ages onwards, in the Third Reich’s iconography, and in modern, radicalized forms of anti-Semitic picturing in Arab media. Within overarching master …

Quick Fixes Or Real Remedies? The Benefits And Limitation Of Climate And Energy Fast Policy, Melissa Powers, Edward Jewell, Joni Sliger Jan 2017

Quick Fixes Or Real Remedies? The Benefits And Limitation Of Climate And Energy Fast Policy, Melissa Powers, Edward Jewell, Joni Sliger

San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law

To avoid these shortcomings, this article recommends that Oregon and other states lacking meaningful climate mitigation and energy decarbonization strategies slow down their policymaking so that they can first develop a long-term plan. These states should also ensure that their governance structures are in order. Specifically, states should ensure they have a governance system capable of designing, from the ground-up, a comprehensivestrategy to decarbonize the energy system and substantially reduce greenhouse gases by the middle of the century.[1] An adequate governance structure would also ensure that regulatory and planning agencies have the expertise, independence, and capacity to evaluate existing laws, …

From Top-Down To Bottom-Up Climate Policy: New Challenges In Carbon Market Design, Jonas Monast Jan 2017

From Top-Down To Bottom-Up Climate Policy: New Challenges In Carbon Market Design, Jonas Monast

San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law

This Article explores the shift from top-down to bottom-up approaches to carbon market design, focusing on three strategies that have emerged since 2009: the California Cap-and-Trade Program, the Clean Power Plan, and the UNFCCC process. The Article then examines the prospects for broad multilateral markets to emerge under a bottom-up approach and identifies three pathways to streamline market design choices: a coordinated approach; a dominant actor approach; and a common elements approach.

Do Mess With Texas ... ? Why Rolling Easements May Provide A Solution To The Loss Of Public Beaches Due To Climate Change-Induced Landward Coastal Migration, Carolyn Ginno Jan 2017

Do Mess With Texas ... ? Why Rolling Easements May Provide A Solution To The Loss Of Public Beaches Due To Climate Change-Induced Landward Coastal Migration, Carolyn Ginno

San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law

This paper explores the viability of rolling easements in California as well as how they might be implemented. California has the opportunity to use rolling easement doctrine to fill the public policy vacuum created by the Severance decision. By messing with Texas; precedent, California could utilize rolling easements to preserve public access to its beaches in the wake of coastal inundation resulting from climate change.
Determining whether and how rolling easements might be used in California requires an understanding of climate change as a man-made phenomenon and the impacts it has on coastal property. The next sections will outline this …

Discretion Bites: The Current State Of Animal Emergency Planning, Paige Chretien Jan 2017

Discretion Bites: The Current State Of Animal Emergency Planning, Paige Chretien

San Diego Journal of Climate & Energy Law

Natural disasters have historically wreaked havoc on the lives of animals. Hurricane Katrina, which hit the gulf coast of Louisiana in 2005, exposed the tragic vulnerabilities of pets and pet owners in disasters and brought awareness to the significance of the human-animal bond.[1] As climate change will likely breed storms that are more deadly than their predecessors, planning and preparedness are essential to mitigating the impacts of these storms. The current status of animal emergency planning and preparedness in the state of California does not ensure that such vulnerable population will be adequately protected.
Part I begins by discussing the …

Decentralization, The Internal Revenue Allotment, And Shared Growth: An Examination Of Correlations, Ferdinand C. Maquito

Journal of Public Affairs and Development

This is a macro study on the role of internal revenue allotments in decentralization to help the Philippines achieve shared growth. The research attempted to answer two interrelated development policy questions: 1) has the Philippines achieved shared growth; and 2) does the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) have the potential of contributing to shared growth? Patterns of correlation were distilled from available provincial as well as national data on average income, poverty incidence, income distribution, and IRA. Correlation analysis for the second question was supplemented with an analysis of the IRA formula. Results showed that growth in the Philippines has been …

Equitable Apportionment Of Shared Transboundary River Waters: A Case Study Of Modifications Of The Indus Waters Treaty, Waseem Ahmad Qureshi Jan 2017

Equitable Apportionment Of Shared Transboundary River Waters: A Case Study Of Modifications Of The Indus Waters Treaty, Waseem Ahmad Qureshi

San Diego International Law Journal

The principle of equitable utilization and the doctrine of equitable apportionment are regarded highly in customary international law for the apportionment of transboundary river waters between upper and lower riparian states. In this regard, the Indus Waters Treaty is an excellent example of the pragmatic implementation of the principle of equitable utilization, as well as of the principles of equity and justice. The treaty allottedthree eastern rivers to India and three western rivers to Pakistan in an attempt to equitably divide the shared Indus River basin and its five tributaries between the neighboring countries. However, India has now expressed an …
