Nutritional Aspects Of Commercially Prepared Infant Foods In Developed Countries: A Narrative Review, Kate Maslin, Carina Venter Jan 2017

Nutritional Aspects Of Commercially Prepared Infant Foods In Developed Countries: A Narrative Review, Kate Maslin, Carina Venter

School of Nursing and Midwifery

AbstractNutritional intake during infancy is a critical aspect of child development and health that is of significant public health concern. Although there is extensive research on breast-feeding and timing of solid food introduction, there is less evidence on types of solid foods fed to infants, specifically commercially prepared infant foods. The consumption of commercially prepared infant foods is very prevalent in many developed countries, exceeding the consumption of homemade foods in some situations. Although these food products may have practical advantages, there are concerns about their nutritional composition, sweet taste, bioavailability of micronutrients, diversity of ingredients and long-term health effects. …

Eco-Efficiency Of High-Yielding Variety Rice Cultivation After Accounting For On-Farm Environmental Damage As An Undesirable Output: An Empirical Analysis From Bangladesh, N-E Sabiha, R Salim, S Rahman Jan 2017

Eco-Efficiency Of High-Yielding Variety Rice Cultivation After Accounting For On-Farm Environmental Damage As An Undesirable Output: An Empirical Analysis From Bangladesh, N-E Sabiha, R Salim, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This study computes the eco-efficiency of high-yielding variety (HYV) rice production by including an on-farm environmental damage index (OFEDI) as an undesirable output using data envelopment analysis. It then identifies its determinants by applying an interval regression procedure on a sample of 317 farmers from north-western Bangladesh. Results reveal that the mean level of the OFEDI-adjusted production efficiency (i.e. eco-efficiency) is 89 per cent, whereas ignoring OFEDI adjustment (i.e. with OFEDI = 0) reduces the mean level of efficiency to 69 per cent, implying that the production of undesirable output or on-farm environmental damage induces an efficiency loss of 20 …

Sonic Affects And The Production Of Space: ‘Music By Handle’ And The Politics Of Street Music In Victorian London, Paul Simpson Jan 2017

Sonic Affects And The Production Of Space: ‘Music By Handle’ And The Politics Of Street Music In Victorian London, Paul Simpson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This article examines the affective capacities of sound and its role in the on-going production of social spaces. More specifically, the article seeks to understand the situated nature of sound’s affectivity within particular social-political-material contexts or circumstances. This is developed through a discussion of an empirical case study related to the history of street music: the ‘street music debates’ of Victorian London. The interrelation here of the sounds street musicians made, the broader urban soundscape of the time, who played street music and who it was that found themselves listening to this music demonstrate clearly the situated affective capacities of …

A Sense Of The Cycling Environment: Felt Experiences Of Infrastructure And Atmospheres, Paul Simpson Jan 2017

A Sense Of The Cycling Environment: Felt Experiences Of Infrastructure And Atmospheres, Paul Simpson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This paper explores how cyclists gain a sense of the environments they move through by considering their felt experiences of the affective atmospheres that emerge in and through their movements. More specifically, the focus falls upon how various forms of transport infrastructure choreograph bodies in their movements through the city and so contributes towards the co-production of various affective atmospheres between differently mobile bodies. Drawing on video interviews with 24 commuter cyclists in Plymouth, UK, the roles that such infrastructures and atmospheres play in shaping the experience of cycling through shared forms of transport space are considered. Based on this, …

IntroductionLiving donation accounts for over one-third of all kidney transplants taking place in the UK.1The concept of anonymously donating a kidney to a stranger (non-directed altruistic or unspecified kidney donation (UKD)) remains uncomfortable for some clinicians, principally due to concerns about the motivations and long-term physical and psychological outcomes in this donor group.AimsThe research programme aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the unspecified donor programme in the UK. It aims to identify reasons for variations in practice across centres, explore outcomes for donors and ascertain barriers and facilitators to UKD, as well as assess the economic implications of unspecified …

The Lancet’s series of articles on reducing waste and increasing value in medical research were published in 2014(1-7). Subsequently, developments consistent with the recommendations made in the series were documented in an article based on informal enquiries made of research funders and regulators, researchers and research institutions, and journal editors (Moher et al 2016). We have explored in greater detail how the most influential of these ‘actors’ in the research community, the research funders, monitor and take steps to reduce waste in the research they support; and how they support methodology research (‘research on research’) and research infrastructure needed to …

AbstractElectronic tags have become a common tool in fish research, enhancing our understanding of how fish interact with their environment and move among different habitats, for estimating mortality and recording internal physiological states. An often‐untested assumption of electronic tagging studies is that tagged fish are representative of untagged conspecifics and thus show ‘normal’ behaviour (e.g. movement rates, swimming activity, feeding). Here, we use a unique data set for potamadromous walleye (Sander vitreus) in Lake Huron and Lake Erie tributaries to assess whether the lack of appropriate controls in electronic tagging could seriously affect behavioural data. We used fish tagged in …

Intra-Rater Reliability Of The Multiple Single-Leg Hop-Stabilization Test And Relationships With Age, Leg Dominance And Training., L Sawle, J Freeman, J Marsden

School of Health Professions

BACKGROUND: Balance is a complex construct, affected by multiple components such as strength and co-ordination. However, whilst assessing an athlete's dynamic balance is an important part of clinical examination, there is no gold standard measure. The multiple single-leg hop-stabilization test is a functional test which may offer a method of evaluating the dynamic attributes of balance, but it needs to show adequate intra-tester reliability. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the intra-rater reliability of a dynamic balance test, the multiple single-leg hop-stabilization test on the dominant and non-dominant legs. DESIGN: Intra-rater reliability study. METHODS: Fifteen active participants …

Evaluating Rehabilitation: An Ongoing Challenge., Jennifer Freeman Jan 2017

Evaluating Rehabilitation: An Ongoing Challenge., Jennifer Freeman

School of Health Professions

Research on the effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions is crucial for people with multiple sclerosis (MS), their caregivers, treatment providers and policy makers. Whilst there has been a steady increase in rehabilitation research activity over the past decade, studies have tended to focus on the evaluation of single interventions, such as supervised exercise programmes, and even here there are challenges. In comparison few studies have evaluated the more complex packages, such as multi-disciplinary inpatient rehabilitation. Further, as is typical across the rehabilitation arena, many of the studies undertaken have been pilot or feasibility studies which have not moved onto a definitive …

Social Geology — Integrating Sustainability Concepts Into Earth Sciences, Iain S. Stewart, Joel C. Gill Jan 2017

Social Geology — Integrating Sustainability Concepts Into Earth Sciences, Iain S. Stewart, Joel C. Gill

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Most geologists would argue that geoscientific knowledge, experience, and guidance is critical for addressing many of society's most acute environmental challenges, yet few geologists are directly engaged in current discourses around sustainable development. That is surprising given that several attributes make modern geoscience well placed to make critical contributions to contemporary sustainability thinking. Here, we argue that if geoscientists are to make our know-how relevant to sustainability science, two aspects seem clear. Firstly, the geoscience community needs to substantially broaden its constituency, not only forging interdisciplinary links with other environmental disciplines but also drawing from the human and behavioral sciences. …

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Mollusks are known to be uniquely sensitive to a number of reproductive toxicants including some vertebrate endocrine disrupting chemicals. However, they have widely been ignored in environmental risk assessment procedures for chemicals. This study describes the validation of the Potamopyrgus antipodarum reproduction test within the OECD Conceptual Framework for Endocrine Disrupters Testing and Assessment. The number of embryos in the brood pouch and adult mortality serve as main endpoints. The experiments are conducted as static systems in beakers filled with artificial medium, which is aerated trough glass pipettes. The test chemical is dispersed into the medium, and adult snails are …
