“Are We Having Fun Yet?”: What Factors Influence Senior-Level Managers To Have Fun At Work?, Anthony Scardillo Jan 2017

“Are We Having Fun Yet?”: What Factors Influence Senior-Level Managers To Have Fun At Work?, Anthony Scardillo

AMTP Proceedings 2017

Contrary to belief, employees are NOT having fun yet. In fact, 73% of all employees are dissatisfied with their jobs (Crabtree, 2013). The reasons are many, but the underlying reason is that they are not having any fun! (Clark, 2009; Ford, McLaughlin, & Newstrom, 2003a; Kinjerski & Skrypnek, 2006). We believe that a fun and engaging workplace impacts employee engagement, morale, productivity and safety (Bedeian & Armenakis, 1998; Boyatzis, Smith, & Beveridge, 2012; 2013). We also believe that creating a fun atmosphere at work is accomplished only when management has fun (Bolton, Houlihan, & Renee Baptiste, 2009; CHI, CHUNG, & …

Employee Retention In A Call Center, Angelica Pigman, Perry Haan Jan 2017

Employee Retention In A Call Center, Angelica Pigman, Perry Haan

AMTP Proceedings 2017

One of the most important aspects of many businesses providing customer services are their call centers. These organizations employ millions of workers who are required to address customer queries and provide solutions to both existing and prospective clients. Customer service is looked at as key factor to keeping current customers. Worldwide, call centers comprise an ever-evolving and dynamic industry, yet researchers find that there is a high turnover rate among call center agents (Pierre & Tremblay, 2011). Facing customers and answering complicated queries are daunting tasks, this is made even more complicated by the fact that call center technology is …

The Role Of Social Identity In Viewer Attitudes And Intentions, Rachel Kavena Secharan, Hillary Greenberg, Juancarlo Villatoro, Princess Brown, Jaejin Lee Jan 2017

The Role Of Social Identity In Viewer Attitudes And Intentions, Rachel Kavena Secharan, Hillary Greenberg, Juancarlo Villatoro, Princess Brown, Jaejin Lee

AMTP Proceedings 2017

The research project aims to identify a relationship between self-identification based on the social identity theory and feelings towards a particular show. Focusing the research on four fictitious shows with similar plot lines, but different casts of the same ethnic group, the research team has created a questionnaire that asked questions relating to the shows and participant social identity. The survey sample consists of 241 individuals between the ages of 18 and 28. The results show that there is a positive predictive relationship between feeling that your social group is represented in a show and attitudes towards that show, as …

Online Survey Respondents’ Reactions To Required Questions, Jeffrey S. Gutenberg, Seongbae Lim Jan 2017

Online Survey Respondents’ Reactions To Required Questions, Jeffrey S. Gutenberg, Seongbae Lim

AMTP Proceedings 2017

One of the most common errors committed by “amateur” online survey questionnaire designers is the improper use of “required” questions, where the survey respondent is not allowed to continue in the survey unless the question is answered. The problem with this design feature is that if a valid choice is not offered, the survey respondent must either give an incorrect answer to proceed, or terminate the survey. In order to get an empirical sense of how survey-takers respond to such situations, two studies were conducted, both employing 600+ members of a commercial online panel. Respondents were asked their opinion of …

An Exploratory Investigation Of Green Behaviors And Attitudes Towards Green Marketing Initiatives, Sam Fullerton, Tammy Mccullough, Lewis Hershey Jan 2017

An Exploratory Investigation Of Green Behaviors And Attitudes Towards Green Marketing Initiatives, Sam Fullerton, Tammy Mccullough, Lewis Hershey

AMTP Proceedings 2017

A sample of 205 university students provided input regarding an array of 32 issues germane to both green marketing and green consumption. A diverse array of behaviors and opinions were articulated. Respondents reported a high propensity to engage in recycling, donating used goods, and purchasing products with a longer life expectancy. They favored environmentally-friendly actions such as focusing on cleaner and more efficient energy alternatives. There was a strong belief that individuals can make a difference. A comparison of business and nonbusiness students documented significant differences on two of the 32 issues under investigation with nonbusiness students expressing greater concern …

Race Ethnicity And In-Store Mobile-Assisted Shopping In The Us, Kristine Johnson, Manuel C. Pontes

AMTP Proceedings 2017

This research primarily investigates the relationship between race ethnicity and consumer use of mobile phones in-store to facilitate purchase decisions. Data were collected by a telephone survey of a nationally representative sample of US adults between January 5 and January 8, 2012. The data collection was sponsored by the Pew Foundation and made available for this research. The data were analyzed with the software R and its survey package that allow researchers to incorporate the sampling weights to estimate population statistics, standard errors, and confidence intervals.

The independent variables were demographic variables (race ethnicity, gender, and household income) and behavioral …

A Cit Investigation Of Patient Deception Using Self-Discrepancy Theory, Gary Daniel Futrell Jan 2017

A Cit Investigation Of Patient Deception Using Self-Discrepancy Theory, Gary Daniel Futrell

AMTP Proceedings 2017

It is widely accepted that patients knowingly lie, mislead, and deceive health care professionals working in their favor. While physicians do their best to provide patients with quality care, patient deception can not only affect service quality and patient satisfaction, but also physician effectiveness and medical outcomes. The current research consists of a qualitative investigation of this phenomenon and seeks to lay the foundation for a self-discrepancy theory perspective of patient deception.

Self-discrepancy theory (SDT) seeks to explain how emotional discomfort can be caused by conflicting beliefs about one’s self. That is, a discrepancy arises and there is emotional discomfort …

Rehabilitation In The Punitive State: An Oxymoron? An Examination Of Rehabilitation And Punitive Practices In The United States, Jeri Kirby Jan 2017

Rehabilitation In The Punitive State: An Oxymoron? An Examination Of Rehabilitation And Punitive Practices In The United States, Jeri Kirby

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The extent and nature of incarceration has changed dramatically over the last 40 years in the United States. From 1980 to 2007, the American incarceration rate increased by 1,100 percent (BJS 2008). Much of this incarceration boom can be linked to the War on Drugs (WOD) and the punitive sentencing policies that developed from it. Understanding these punitive effects on individuals and communities and the challenges of prisoner re-entry requires us to consider the many levels of punishment that play a role in the United States correctional policies. Past research has considered the impact of the WOD policies on many …

Selective Fusion Of Structural And Functional Data For Improved Glaucoma Detection, Paul Y. Kim, Khan M. Iftekharuddin, Pinakin G. Davey, Gabor Holló, Martha Tóth, Anita Garas, Edward A. Essock Jan 2017

Selective Fusion Of Structural And Functional Data For Improved Glaucoma Detection, Paul Y. Kim, Khan M. Iftekharuddin, Pinakin G. Davey, Gabor Holló, Martha Tóth, Anita Garas, Edward A. Essock

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This work proposes novel selective feature fusion of structural and functional data for improved glaucoma detection. The structural data such as retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness measurement acquired by scanning laser polarimetry (SLP) is fused with the functional visual field (VF) measurement recorded from the standard automated perimetry (SAP) test. The proposed selective feature fusion exploits correspondence between structural and functional data obtained over multiple sectors. The correlation coefficients for corresponding structural-function sector pairs are used as weights in subsequent feature selection. The sectors are ranked according to the correlation coefficients and the first four highly ranked sectors are …

Social Capital Structure And Dynamics In Stream Restoration: A Social Network Analysis Approach To The Upper Shavers Fork, West Virginia, Paul J. Kinder Jr. Jan 2017

Social Capital Structure And Dynamics In Stream Restoration: A Social Network Analysis Approach To The Upper Shavers Fork, West Virginia, Paul J. Kinder Jr.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Streams are common pool resources embedded in watersheds representing complex socio-ecological systems that provide ecological goods and services as well as economic and social benefits. They have been referred to as the lifeblood of civilization. Streams, however, are among the most vulnerable natural resources globally to anthropocentric impacts and are all too often in need of restoration. While the primary objective of stream restoration is to bring back healthy ecological functions, other benefits and outcomes from restoration efforts exist, but are often overlooked. These benefits and outcomes relate to effective natural resource governance systems, which rely on social networks comprised …

Experiences And Perceptions Of West Virginia Stakeholders Towards Industrial Hemp And Its End Uses, Rebekah K. Stevenson Jan 2017

Experiences And Perceptions Of West Virginia Stakeholders Towards Industrial Hemp And Its End Uses, Rebekah K. Stevenson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Industrial hemp is an herbaceous, annual plant from the cannabis sativa family. It is highly desirable due to its end uses, adaptability to climates for farming, ease of growth, and overall profitability. Its versatile nature provides a valuable source of raw materials for fibers, oil, seed, and food. A renewable fiber, industrial hemp returns nitrogen into the soil after it the plant has been harvested and plowed into the field. The crop was mistakenly placed on Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances list in the 1970s due to its species relation to marijuana. Industrial hemp has been restricted until several …

Staff-Child Interaction Therapy Versus Treatment As Usual In Community-Based Wraparound Services: An Evaluation Of Feasibility And Child Behavior Problems, Nancy M. Wallace Jan 2017

Staff-Child Interaction Therapy Versus Treatment As Usual In Community-Based Wraparound Services: An Evaluation Of Feasibility And Child Behavior Problems, Nancy M. Wallace

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Wraparound services are a well-known, widely implemented community-based model developed to treat children with a variety of severe emotional disturbances (Clark & Clarke, 1996). Although results have demonstrated some positive outcomes (Suter & Bruns, 2009), significant weaknesses have also been noted including negative findings (Bertram, Suter, Bruns & O'Rourke, 2011) and a variety of methodological limitations (Suter & Bruns, 2009). States have recently begun to examine the empirical basis of wraparound programs to better understand their implementation and effectiveness (Community Data Roundtable, 2015).;The current study examined the implementation of Staff-Child Interaction Therapy (SCIT), a manualized treatment developed at West Virginia …

What Do Astronomers Do: A Survey Of U.S. Astronomers' Attitudes, Tools And Techniques, And Social Interactions Engaged In Through Their Practice Of Science, Timothy S. Spuck

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Astronomy is one of the oldest STEM enterprises today. It is a discipline through which technology has been advanced, as well as our understanding of the universe. Further, astronomy is a gateway science that inspires the imagination of young learners, and can be used to promote STEM careers. In order to advance the astronomy enterprise, we must maintain an informed citizenry. The practice of astronomy has changed over time; astronomy today is much different than it was 50 years ago. In an effort to identify the current practice of astronomy, or what it is that today's astronomers do, 478 U.S. …

The Association Between Family Leisure And Family Quality Of Life: A Meta-Analysis Of Data From Parents And Adolescents, Camilla Hodge, Mat D. Duerden, Eric K. Layland, Andrew Lacanienta, Michael C. Goates, Xiaoyue Maggie Niu

Faculty Publications

The body of family leisure research has grown over the past 25 years; however, efforts to quantitatively synthesize that body of literature have not been made. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis of published and unpublished literature reporting on parent and adolescent child data regarding shared leisure experiences and family quality-of-life indicators across k=23 articles identified from a broad, systematic search of literature. Using random effects, we measured the associations of (a) family leisure participation with family quality of life and (b) family leisure satisfaction with family quality of life. Results indicated significant associations of small to moderate effect sizes in …

Experience, Knowledge, And Appreciation In The Implicit Aesthetics Of Weather Lore, Mădălina Diaconu Jan 2017

Experience, Knowledge, And Appreciation In The Implicit Aesthetics Of Weather Lore, Mădălina Diaconu

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

[1] Weather sayings are empirical rules for the prediction of weather and have been studied, so far, only by paremiologists and meteorologists. The author argues that they also present interest for environmental aesthetics, and that their aesthetic dimension is not confined to their stylistic qualities and versified form but is mainly based on the experience that underlies them. The analyses of weather lore in English, French, and German emphasize that this pre-modern, expert knowledge produced and still can bring enjoyment and, conversely, that the sources of this aesthetic enjoyment are to a large extent cognitive, even if not scientific by …

Product Safety Failure And Restoring Reputation Across Markets: Fonterra's Management Of The 2013 Bacterial Contamination Crisis, Augustine Pang Jan 2017

Product Safety Failure And Restoring Reputation Across Markets: Fonterra's Management Of The 2013 Bacterial Contamination Crisis, Augustine Pang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Modern distribution systems often stretch beyond national borders such that a highly-visible product failure in a single country may negatively influence the reputation and market share of all identifiable supply chain members-even those that are blameless-in multiple countries, especially when the product is related to food safety. This study considers how Fonterra's response to its 2013 bacterial contamination crisis influenced its own reputation and that of the New Zealand dairy milk industry. It first traces how the crisis started in March 2013 and how it ended in August when investigations showed that the bacteria found did not cause botulism, a …

In the United States, the legal context plays a major role in how industrial/organizational (I/O) psychologists approach selection system development. The set of protected groups, the approaches to making an a priori case of discrimination (e.g., differential treatment vs. adverse impact), the key court cases influencing selection, and the prohibitions against preferential treatment (e.g., the 1991 ban on score adjustment or within-group norming) are well known. Selection texts (e.g., Guion, 1998) and human resource management texts (e.g., Cascio & Aguinis, 2008) give prominent treatment to the legal context. In recent years, there has been a growing internationalization of I/O psychology …

Efficient Augmented Inverse Probability Weighted Estimation In Missing Data Problems, Jing Qin, Biao Zhang, Denis H. Y. Leung Jan 2017

Efficient Augmented Inverse Probability Weighted Estimation In Missing Data Problems, Jing Qin, Biao Zhang, Denis H. Y. Leung

Research Collection School Of Economics

When analyzing data with missing data, a commonly used method is the inverse probability weighting (IPW) method, which reweights estimating equations with propensity scores. The popularity of the IPW method is due to its simplicity. However, it is often being criticized for being inefficient because most of the information from the incomplete observations is not used. Alternatively, the regression method is known to be efficient but is nonrobust to the misspecification of the regression function. In this article, we propose a novel way of optimally combining the propensity score function and the regression model. The resulting estimating equation enjoys the …

The Decline Of The Virginia (And American) Death Penalty, Brandon L. Garrett Jan 2017

The Decline Of The Virginia (And American) Death Penalty, Brandon L. Garrett

Faculty Scholarship

The American death penalty is disappearing. Death sentences and executions have reached the lowest levels seen in three decades. Even the states formerly most aggressive in pursuit of death sentences have seen death sentences steadily decline. Take Virginia, which has the highest rate of executions of any death penalty state, and which has executed the third highest number of prisoners since the 1970s. How times have changed. There has not been a new death sentence in Virginia since 2011. Only seven counties have imposed death sentences in the past decade in Virginia. There are now two or fewer trials a …
