Do College Students Use Online Self-Help? A Survey Of Intentions And Use Of Mental Health Resources, Michael E. Levin, Krista Stocke, Benjamin G. Pierce, Crissa Levin
Psychology Faculty Publications
Online self-help may help increase the reach of mental health services for college students, but little research has examined students’ actual interest/use of these resources. An online survey of 389 college students examined intentions and use of online mental health resources as compared with other support options. Findings indicated the highest intentions/use of informal supports (e.g., parents, friends) for mental health problems and lowest intentions/use for online self-help. However, a subset of students showed a preference for online self-help over other forms of support. Participants were also more likely to request online self-help resources (21%) than in-person therapy resources (9%) …
Trading Safety For Innovation And Access: An Empirical Evaluation Of The Fda’S Premarket Approval Process, George Horvath
Trading Safety For Innovation And Access: An Empirical Evaluation Of The Fda’S Premarket Approval Process, George Horvath
Faculty Scholarship
Congress created the premarket approval process (PMA) to provide a rigorous safety evaluation of high-risk medical devices before they may be sold on the U.S. market. Evaluating a PMA application requires the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct a lengthy, complex, and costly assessment of the extensive data a manufacturer must submit. But other policy concerns, notably a fear of hampering innovation and a desire to assure timely access to new technologies, have led Congress to relax some of the rigorous data requirements the PMA process imposes on manufacturers. Congress mandates that the FDA employ the “least burdensome” approach …

University Research Development Offices: Perceptions And Experiences Of Research University Administrators, Roxana Ross
Theses and Dissertations
Universities are struggling to keep up with the cost of doing research. Some are searching for new ways to improve their likelihood of getting grant funding to support their research efforts. As a function of the academic research enterprise, research development offices and research development staff at universities utilize specific activities to enhance grant funding success and support university research goals. This study examines university research development activities and research development offices to determine if formal research development offices are perceived to have value and what research development activities are most impactful. The issue of fair measures of success for …

Early childhood development is a robust and vibrant focus of study in multiple disciplines, from economics and education to psychology and neuroscience. Abundant research from these disciplines has established that early childhood is critical for the development of cognitive abilities, language, and psychosocial skills, all of which turn, in large measure, on the parent-child relationship. And because early childhood relationships and experiences have a deep and lasting impact on a child’s life trajectory, disadvantages during early childhood replicate inequality. Working together, scholars in these disciplines are actively engaged in a national policy debate about reducing inequality through early childhood interventions. …

Suppfriends: Empowering Friends, Changing Culture, Allie Liss, Lily Grier
Senior Honors Papers / Undergraduate Theses
Without the proper education, responding to disclosure of sexual assault can be an experience for which many people feel entirely unprepared to handle – no matter how much they care about and want to help their friends. SuppFriends seeks to empower members of the WashU community to respond supportively and effectively to peer disclosures, as well as to understand their own experiences and take care of themselves in the process. In exploring what interventions already exist for the above stated problem, we searched for interventions that specifically addressed the issue of empowering friends of survivors, interventions that encompassed the idea …

On September 7, 2016, four of the nation’s newspapers of record weighed in on the connected crises in crime and policing. The New York Times revealed the tensions between the Mayor’s office in Chicago and several community and professional groups over a plan to overhaul Chicago’s police disciplinary board – a plan developed in the wake of the shooting of an unarmed teenager, Laquan McDonald, and the release of a video of that killing. The Wall Street Journal related a vigorous defense of New York City’s “broken windows” policing strategy – a strategy that has been a recurring source of …

Eighty years on, we are seeing a resurgence of the antiregulatory and antigovernment forces that lost the battle of the New Deal. President Trump's administration has proclaimed the "deconstruction of the administrative state" to be one of its main objectives. Early Trump executive actions quickly delivered on this pledge, with a wide array of antiregulatory actions and a budget proposing to slash many agencies' funding. Invoking the long-dormant Congressional Review Act (CRA), the Republican-controlled Congress has eagerly repealed numerous regulations promulgated late in the Obama Administration. Other major legislative and regulatory repeals are pending, and bills that would impose the …
The Importance Of "Money", Kathryn Judge
The Importance Of "Money", Kathryn Judge

In a provocative new book, The Money Problem: Rethinking Financial Regulation, Professor Morgan Ricks argues that the government should reclaim control over money creation. Money, Ricks argues, is not just the cash in your pocket or the balance in your checking account. Instead, at least for purposes of financial stability policy, money is best equated with short-term debt. For most of the twentieth century, such debt was issued primarily by regulated commercial banks and insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), resulting in a fairly stable financial system. As a result of financial innovation, however, much of today's short-term …

This chapter will examine the emergence of this new, post-New Deal conception of the role of the administrative state, often called “The New Governance.” I will first describe the policy premises of the New Deal administrative state and contrast them with the underlying assumptions of the New Governance. In doing so, I will explain how the ideas that permeated the New Governance shaped regulatory policy in the 1990s and 2000s. I will then explore the reasons for the rise of this new conception of the administrative state. In particular, I will demonstrate that the New Governance had its origins not …

Low back pain is one of the most common reasons for doctor visits each year in the United States and consistently represents one of the leading areas of US health care spending in recent decades. Located at the inner space of the intervertebral discs (IVDs) of the spinal column, a soft, shocking absorbing tissue known as nucleus pulposus (NP) is a frequently implicated target of patient symptoms and comorbidities related to back pain. IVDs are quite susceptible to both acute injury, such as disc herniation, and chronic age-related degeneration known as intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD). These conditions ultimately lead to …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Vegetation is established following construction through various seeding and mulching practices. Environmental permits in West Virginia require a minimum of 70% of ground cover by area for release of a construction site. The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH), like many other states, has specifications for temporary and permanent seeding and mulching practices. This research critically evaluated the best management practices (BMPs) utilized in the WVDOH specifications, developed recommended revisions to the specifications, and created supplemental materials for future application.;Recommended revisions to the WVDOH include: topsoil, improved soil tests, rolled erosion control products (RECPs), biological growth stimulants (BGSs), hydraulic growth …

Differential Response Policy And Child Maltreatment Re-Report, Amy A. Hunter
Differential Response Policy And Child Maltreatment Re-Report, Amy A. Hunter
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Child maltreatment is a serious public health issue. The decisions made by Child Protective Services (CPS) in response to reports of maltreatment may influence a child's risk of subsequent maltreatment. Studies have found a direct relationship between adverse childhood events (ACEs), (e.g., experiencing maltreatment, exposure to violence) and negative health outcomes across the lifespan (e.g., disease, developmental delays, suicidality, injury and death). Traditional CPS investigations focus on determining details of abuse events, and use that information to assess child safety and risk of future harm. The introduction of differential response policy provides supportive and preventive services to mitigate the risk …

How Third Party Observers Respond To Overheard Service Failures: Implications For Frontline Service Employees And The Firm, Ismail Karabas, Jeff Joireman, Shinhye Kim
AMTP Proceedings 2017
Frontline service employees and unhappy customers have generally been the main focus of the service failures research. It is established that service failures are difficult to prevent and are costly to a firm. Therefore, effective service recoveries have been proposed such as apology or compensation. The recent research extended the service failures literature by focusing on a broader audience during service failures: third party observers in the servicescape. The current work investigates the degree to which overhearing another customer’s interaction with a service employee following a service failure will impact third party observers’ evaluations of the service employees and the …

Facebook And Branding Of Small To Medium-Sized Enterprises, Angella Banks, Perry Haan
AMTP Proceedings 2017
Small to Medium Size Enterprise (SME) owners face many challenges as they strive to keep their businesses afloat. Although these challenges vary, one of the most prevalent is the inability to market effectively. Over 50% of SMEs close within the first five years (Cronin-Gilmore, 2012). This case study explored the relationship between Facebook and SMEs’ brands, and Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC). Through the examination of these relationships, the study identified barriers that hinder SMEs ability to use Facebook effectively and further strengthen their branding strategies. Facebook can be an inexpensive marketing tool that SME owners has access; however, challenges exist, …

An Assessment Of Engagement, Self-Pacing And Learning In A Flipped Marketing Classroom: An Exploratory Study, James R. Shock, Jill K. Maher
AMTP Proceedings 2017
This study examines the possible impact of engagement and self-pacing on student learning in a flipped classroom environment. Survey responses from 33 students were used in this exploratory study. Results indicate that engagement and self-pacing showed significance, impacting self-reported learning. This preliminary study suggests a flipped classroom improves student learning in marketing. It is expected that a larger sample size with improved measures will uncover other relationships within the flipped classroom model.
Marketing & Business Strategy: A Relationship Opportunity In Curricula, Jon M. Martin
Marketing & Business Strategy: A Relationship Opportunity In Curricula, Jon M. Martin
AMTP Proceedings 2017
Business schools and administration curriculum delivery often fail to recognize and leverage the relationship between Marketing Strategy and overall Business Strategy courses regarding course overlap/merger, course scheduling, and/or instruction. Since it is becoming increasingly difficult to find and realize curriculum improvements that well engage students in the wake of scheduling conflicts and enrollment/matriculation challenges, Pfeiffer MHA is, and urges other academic programs to consider as well, embracing the standardization required to leverage these two course subjects in order to realize the academic synergy between them for our students.

Has Anything Changed? Comparing Student Perceptions Of Academic Integrity: 2006-2016, Anne Heineman Batory, Stephen S. Batory
AMTP Proceedings 2017
Academic integrity issues continue to challenge colleges and universities around the world. After a review of the relevant literature, the authors conclude that additional research is needed to understand and monitor academic integrity within institutions of higher education. This study explores student perceptions concerning academic integrity concepts and behaviors in two time frames ten years apart. In this comparative study, student attitudes toward academic situations, faculty behavior, and business decisions are assessed in 2006 and again in 2016. In general the two groups reported a similar overall pattern of responses. However, the students now perceive academic dishonesty as a non-acceptable …
