The impact of a cultural awareness course among nursing students may affect the particular person for years to come. Cultural awareness can be taught via many methods, often requiring study abroad and/or extreme investment of time, money and effort. There is little research on sustained effects on nursing alumni from such a course. The purpose of this descriptive survey study was to determine the long term outcomes of a cultural awareness course and 2) compare the long term effects between alumni who went abroad and those who chose to complete the course locally. One hundred and twenty-one nursing alumni completed …

Thai Engineer Asean Readiness: A Structural Equation Model Analysis, Duangporn Kraisuth, Vinai Panjakajornsak
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review
At the start of 2016, the 10-member nation of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) entered a new era. With it, came the decade old start of the implementation of the 2005 mutual recognition arrangement (MRA) on engineering services and the free flow of skilled labor (FFSL). Although noble intentions, actual specifications and qualifications for this movement heavily restrict its actual implementation. This study therefore conducted both a quantitative and qualitative analyse of 412 engineers selected from a population of 1,211 Thai Federation of Industries companies to investigate how need, gap, and competency affect readiness. The structural equation model …

The Third Coast, Catherine Jane Davis
The Third Coast, Catherine Jane Davis
Theses and Dissertations
The Third Coast is a photographic exploration of the vernacular landscape of the US Gulf Coast. Stretching some 1,600 miles from the mouth of the Rio Grande in Texas to the Florida Everglades, America's southernmost shore is vast and complex. The region is a patchwork of both the natural and built environments, a tangled combination of history and geography, culture and ecology that reflects an intimate and ever-evolving relationship between man, land and sea. The Gulf Coast resists tidy hierarchies or easy classification. Rather, the rhythms of the region comprise its own syntax, a way in which seemingly dissimilar locations …

Data Loggers In Artificial Eggs Reveal That Egg-Turning Behavior Varies On Multiple Ecological Scales In Seabirds, Corey Clatterbuck, Lindsay Young, Eric Vanderwerf, Alexander Naiman, Geoff Bower, Scott A. Shaffer
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
In most avian species, egg-turning behavior during incubation is vital for proper embryonic development and hatching success. However, changes in turning behaviors are rarely studied across different temporal scales (e.g., day–night or across incubation phases), though the timing of incubation behaviors affects reproductive success. We used data loggers encapsulated in artificial eggs to measure turning rates and angle changes of eggs in Western Gull Larus occidentalis and Laysan Albatross Phoebastria immutabilis nests. We examined diurnal and daily cycles in egg-turning behaviors across early, middle, and late incubation phases. Our results indicate that (1) egg-turning behaviors remain similar throughout incubation, resulting …

BACKGROUND: We impact our health by “how we manage our affairs in society.”1 The unequal distribution of power, money, and resources creates a collective social milieu with disparities in health between and within countries. Tackling health inequities require addressing the health implications of the “toxic combination of poor social policies and bad politics.”1 But how do U.S. policy makers view the social determinants of health?
OBJECTIVE: Determine U.S. policy makers’ awareness for the social determinants of health, health inequities, and health in all policies; identify the social determinants of health perceived as legislative priorities; list factors identified/perceived …
Making The Case For Exploratory World Language Instruction In Catholic Elementary Schools Through University Partnerships, Brigid M. Burke, Eric D. Howard
Making The Case For Exploratory World Language Instruction In Catholic Elementary Schools Through University Partnerships, Brigid M. Burke, Eric D. Howard
Journal of Catholic Education
As a result of a university partnership, elementary students at two midwest Catholic elementary schools have been provided with exploratory world language instruction (FLEX) from pre-service teachers. To investigate students’ attitudes and learning of Spanish, researchers interviewed second and fourth graders. The students’ parents and pre-service teachers answered open-ended questionnaires. The research questions for this qualitative study were: 1) How does exploratory world language instruction (FLEX) affect children’s attitudes about learning world languages and cultures? 2) How does exploratory world language instruction (FLEX) affect children’s learning of a world language? The results showed that students possessed positive attitudes about world …

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications
Future freshwater supply, human water demand, and people’s exposure to water stress are subject to multiple sources of uncertainty, including unknown future pathways of fossil fuel and water consumption, and ‘irreducible’ uncertainty arising from internal climate system variability. Such internal variability can conceal forced hydroclimatic changes on multi-decadal timescales and near-continental spatial-scales. Using three projections of population growth, a large ensemble from a single Earth system model, and assuming stationary per capita water consumption, we quantify the likelihoods of future population exposure to increased hydroclimatic deficits, which we define as the average duration and magnitude by which evapotranspiration exceeds precipitation …

Full Disclosure: Examining The Experience Of Male Faculty Of Color At A Predominately White Institution, Thomas A. Cruz-Soto Jr
Theses and Dissertations
This study explores the lived experiences of male faculty of color (African American and Latino American) at Upstate University, a predominately White, private, liberal arts institution (PWI). To gain a better understanding of the lived experiences of male faculty of color, a group that has traditionally been underrepresented and marginalized in academia, the conceptual framework for this study will be guided by Gloria Ladson-Billings' (1995) Critical Race Theory (CRT). Specifically, the component of counter-storytelling was incorporated into the study. A qualitative phenomenological study was designed to dig deep into the research while constantly bracketing to capture the reality or true …
Joining By Number: Military Intervention In Civil Wars, Zachary C. Shirkey
Joining By Number: Military Intervention In Civil Wars, Zachary C. Shirkey
Publications and Research
Understanding why and when states militarily intervene in civil wars is crucial. Intervention can increase civil wars’ severity and the strategies employed in civil wars are shaped by the possibility of military intervention. This article argues that potential military interveners react to information revealed about warring parties’ intentions and relative power. Without revealed information, potential military interveners are unlikely to reconsider their initial decision to remain out of the war. Revealed information causes non-belligerent states to update their expectations about the trajectory of the civil war causing them, at times, to change their calculus about the benefits of belligerency and …

What Does It Mean To Be A Service-Learning Teacher? - An Autoethnography, Kristy Causey Verdi
What Does It Mean To Be A Service-Learning Teacher? - An Autoethnography, Kristy Causey Verdi
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This personal narrative autoethnography of my lived experiences as a middle-school service-learning course teacher has helped me solve a personal mystery and present an important perspective for the K-12 service-learning field. With an eye on revealing a unique service-learning classroom concept to educational leaders, enhancing middle level teacher education, and hopes of providing greater opportunities for advancing research on service learning in K-12 education, this study has also aided me in understanding my professional self and my subjective educational theory through a personal interpretive framework (Kelchtermans, 1993, 1999, 2009). Using autoethnography (Ellis, 2004; Ellis & Bochner, 2006) as a method …

Molecular And Optical Properties Of Tree-Derived Dissolved Organic Matter In Throughfall And Stemflow From Live Oaks And Eastern Red Cedar, Aron Stubbins, Leticia M. Silva, Thorsten Dittmar, John T. Van Stan
Earth, Environment & Sustainability: Faculty Publications
Studies of dissolved organic matter (DOM) transport through terrestrial aquatic systems usually start at the stream. However, the interception of rainwater by vegetation marks the beginning of the terrestrial hydrological cycle making trees the headwaters of aquatic carbon cycling. Rainwater interacts with trees picking up tree-DOM, which is then exported from the tree in stemflow and throughfall. Stemflow denotes water flowing down the tree trunk, while throughfall is the water that drips through the leaves of the canopy. We report the concentrations, optical properties (light absorbance) and molecular signatures (ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry) of tree-DOM in throughfall and stemflow from …

Seeking The Invisible, Alexis Bragg
Seeking The Invisible, Alexis Bragg
Theses and Dissertations
Seeking The Invisible is a photography portrait series which explores the internal context of those suffering from invisible illness. This body of work examines the interior worlds of those often stigmatized as “outsiders,” and those who seek to be acknowledged beyond their illness. When one is told of another’s physical malady with no visible indicators of a problem, skepticism or outright disbelief is an unfortunately likely response. By asking my subjects “What would a portrait of your life look like?” I sought to observe the interior world of this subset and empower my subjects as something more than their illness.
Professional Sporting Events And Traffic: Evidence From Us Cities, Brad R. Humphreys, Hyunwoong Pyun
Professional Sporting Events And Traffic: Evidence From Us Cities, Brad R. Humphreys, Hyunwoong Pyun
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
Sporting events concentrate people at specific locations on game day. No empirical evidence currently exists linking sporting events to local traffic conditions. We analyze urban mobility data from 25 US metropolitan areas with MLB teams over the period 1990 to 2014 to assess the relationship between local traffic and Major League Baseball (MLB) games. Instrumental variable regression results indicate MLB attendance causes increases in local vehicle-miles traveled. At the sample average attendance of 2.8 million, average daily vehicle-miles traveled increases by about 6.9% in cities with MLB teams. Traffic congestion increases by 2%, suggesting that MLB games generate congestion externalities.

Using Remote Sensing To Evaluate Wetland Recovery In The Northern Tampa Bay Area Following Reduction In Groundwater Withdrawals, Amor Elder
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In the past, the Northern Tampa Bay Area (NTBA) wetlands saw severe declines in hydrologic conditions due to excessive groundwater withdrawal rates. Eventually these rates were reduced to allow the wetlands to recover. To monitor this recovery, the Southwest Florida Water Management district (SWFWMD) set up a fieldwork based scoring methodology, called the Wetlands Assessment Procedure (WAP). WAP has been used in many studies of the area since groundwater withdrawal reductions; with many of those studies finding the recovery to be mixed at best. However, these studies were very limited in the number of wetlands they could assess due to …
Abundance And Habitat Preferences Of Introduced Muscovy Ducks (Cairina Moschata), Jacqueline Marie Perry Cahanin
Abundance And Habitat Preferences Of Introduced Muscovy Ducks (Cairina Moschata), Jacqueline Marie Perry Cahanin
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Muscovy ducks are native only to Central and South America, Mexico, and parts of southern Texas and are considered invasive in some areas outside of their native range. Although they have been introduced worldwide, they remain largely unstudied. The primary focus of this study was to relate Muscovy duck abundance to habitat characteristics of wetlands in Tampa, Florida. Muscovy abundance was measured using point count methods at 21 wetland sites that occur within an eight km radius of the University of South Florida’s main campus. Habitat features at these sites were assessed using field methods and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) …
