Estimating Bedload Transport Rates In A Gravel-Bed River Using Seismic Impact Plates: Model Development And Application, Pj Soar, Pw Downs
Estimating Bedload Transport Rates In A Gravel-Bed River Using Seismic Impact Plates: Model Development And Application, Pj Soar, Pw Downs
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
A data-driven, uncertainty-bound estimation technique for bedload transport rates is developed based on passive sensing devices. The model converts sediment samples to a mass in transit for each instantaneous discharge according to impacts detected and a Monte Carlo simulation of the load determined at random from the particle size distribution. Using impact count data autogenically produces a supply-limited, location-specific and high-resolution time-series of bedload rates, while the probabilistic approach inherently accommodates the stochastic nature of bedload transport. Application to the River Avon (Devon, U.K.) provides cross-sectional bedload rate estimates within the bounds of experimental data and calibrated to observed field …

Dreaming As A Critical Discourse Of National Belonging: China Dream, American Dream And World Dream, William A. Callahan
Dreaming As A Critical Discourse Of National Belonging: China Dream, American Dream And World Dream, William A. Callahan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This article explores the normative politics of national belonging through an analysis of the ‘China Dream’ and the ‘American Dream’. It traces how politicians and public intellectuals employ such slogans to highlight how national dreams emerge in times of crisis and involve a combination of aspirations and anxieties. It compares parallel rhetorical strategies – ‘patriotic worrying’ in China and the American Jeremiad in the US – to examine how belonging to these two nations involves a nostalgic longing for the past as a model for the future. Debates about the meaning of these national dreams highlight the tension between freedom …

Leviathan Inc. And Corporate Environmental Engagement, Po-Hsuan Hsu, Hao Liang, Pedro Matos
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In a special report in 2010, The Economist called the resurgence of state-owned mega-enterprises, especially those in emerging economies, “Leviathan Inc.”, and warned about the dangers of the state capitalism model. Traditionally, state-owned firms have been criticized for poor governance and questionable efficiency. In fact, they may be better positioned to deal with market failures and externalities. Our findings based on publicly-listed firms in 45 countries suggest that government-controlled companies engage more in environmental issues, and this engagement does not come at a cost to shareholder value. The effect is more pronounced among firms in emerging market economies and in …

A Perpetually Interrupted Interbasin Water Transfer As A Modern Greek Drama: Assessing The Acheloos To Pinios Interbasin Water Transfer In The Context Of Integrated Water Resources Management, Hristos Tyralis, Tegos Aristoteles, Anastasia Delichatsiou, Nikos Mamassis, Demetris Koutsoyiannis
Open Water Journal
Interbasin water transfer is a primary instrument of water resources management directly related with the integrated development of the economy, society and environment. Here we assess the project of the interbasin water transfer from the river Acheloos to the river Pinios basin which has intrigued the Greek society, the politicians and scientists for decades. The set of criteria we apply originate from a previous study reviewing four interbasin water transfers and assessing whether an interbasin water transfer is compatible with the concept of integrated water resources management. In this respect, we assess which of the principles of the integrated water …

A Geospatial Model For Characterizing The Fish Resources Of The Similkameen River, British Columbia, Canada, Ning Liu, Andrew Harwood, James Kells, Karl-Erich Lindenschmidt
Open Water Journal
A geospatial model was been developed in order to rapidly characterize fluvial geomorphological features associated with the fish resources in a river system. The model uses four easily-quantified geospatial attributes – channel width, plan view sinuosity, longitudinal slope and fractal dimension – for classifying a stream channel into geomorphic response units (GRUs), which are the key working elements of the geospatial model used in this work. Using the geospatial model, a total of five GRUs were defined along the river channel. The model framework was tested using data from a 1983 fish survey conducted along the Canadian portion of the …

An Evidence-Based Review Of Academic Web Search Engines, 2014-2016: Implications For Librarians’ Practice And Research Agenda, Jody C. Fagan
Libraries
Academic web search engines have become central to scholarly research. While the fitness of Google Scholar for research purposes has been examined repeatedly, Microsoft Academic and Google Books have not received much attention. Recent studies have much to tell us about the coverage and utility of Google Scholar, its coverage of the sciences, and its utility for evaluating researcher impact. But other aspects have been understudied, such as coverage of the arts and humanities, books, and non-Western, non-English publications. User research has also tapered off. A small number of articles hint at the opportunity for librarians to become expert advisors …

Prediction Of Water Discharge And Sediment In Teak Forested Areausing Artificial Neural Network Model, Nining Wahyuningrum
Jurnal Penelitian Kehutanan Wallacea
Information on the relationship of rainfall with discharge and sediment are required in watershed management. This relationship is known to be highly nonlinear and complex. Although discharge and sediment has been monitored continuously, but sometimes the information is not or less complete. In this condition, modeling is indispensable. The research objective is to create a model to predict the monthly direct runoff and sediment using Artificial Neural Network (ANN).The model was tested using rainfall data at t-3 and t-4 as input, and discharge and sediment at t+3 and t+4 as output. The data used is the data from 2001 to 2014. …

Geographical Proximity Is Not Enough: How Culture Shaped Placement, Spatiality, And The Outcomes Of The Arab Spring’S Uprisings., Olesya Venger
Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies Faculty Research
This paper investigates the phenomenon of the Arab Spring against the background of cultural traditions and attitudes that sustained these protests and carried them across borders of more than twenty countries in the Middle East in a move of cultural contagion of conflict (Gelfand et al. 2012). Tracing the placement and spatiality of the Arab Spring uprisings, their media and ideascapes (Appadurai 1990), this paper draws upon theoretical frameworks of Homi Bhabha’s (2004) third space, Margaret Kuhn’s (2003) radical space, and Geert Hofstede’s (2014) cultural indicators. Given the information about self-immolations as the events that stirred the uprisings in the …
Utopia Atbp: Versions Of The Ideal In Philippine Fiction, Vicente Garcia Groyon
Utopia Atbp: Versions Of The Ideal In Philippine Fiction, Vicente Garcia Groyon
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
In Utopia, Thomas More delivers a specific and context-bound critique of Tudor England through a faux anthropological report on a perfect society, “perfect” being defined as everything that Tudor England was not. Philippine fiction can similarly be read as visions of what the nation could and should be, delivered in oblique flashes that project a fragmentary composite picture of everything that the Philippines is not, or no longer is. The supposedly opposed vectors of romance and realism coincide in their explicit and implicit yearnings for contentment and happiness, echoing More’s own bemused, amused impatience with his flawed country. Through a …

Rural Change In The Context Of Globalization : Examining Theoretical Issues, F Da Silva Machado
Rural Change In The Context Of Globalization : Examining Theoretical Issues, F Da Silva Machado
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Early discussions and theoretical positions concerning rural change were developed by researchers from countries with post-production economies in order to explain the rural transformations. When discussing economic change in rural space over the last decades, Marsden, T. et al. (1993) presented a new perspective for understanding rural restructuring that includes new subjects, such as capital mobility, flexible production regimes, complexity in the relationship between technology and environment, economic deregulation and new political processes. According to these authors, in order to understand such processes, it is necessary to research the effects of globalization at local scale of action. A recurrent theme …

Mineral Assemblages And Textures Of Granite-Hosted Veins In The Hemerdon W–Sn Deposit: Constraints From Scanning Electron Microscope Chemical X-Ray Mapping, C Wilkins, B Jeffery, J Speer, Ah Dijkstra, J Mcfarlane
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
We report the results of a petrological and mineralogical microscopy study of granite-hosted greisen-bordered veins within granite of the Hemerdon W–Sn deposit, Devon, one of the five largest W deposits in the World. The deposit is currently mined at the Drakelands Mine. The Hemerdon granite is a satellite intrusion of the larger Dartmoor pluton of the post-Variscan Cornubian granitoid batholith. Using a range of microscopy techniques, including fast large-area chemical mapping by means of energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS) on a scanning electron microscope, we identified three types of mineralised veins in drill core material: W-only veins, Sn-only veins and …

The Effects Of Oportunidades On Mexican Presidential Elections, Chen Yao
Open Access Theses
This thesis explores the effects of Mexico’s most famous Conditional Cash Transfer program (CCT program), Oportunidades, on presidential elections in 2006 and 2012. In addition, this paper will investigate this topic from a gender perspective which will lead us to re-think the gender-gap in voting decisions among beneficiary families. In addition, this paper provides a new perspective from which to view remittances’ effects on beneficiaries’ voting decisions. The majority of research about CCT programs were conducted on the basis of Latin American presidential election results during which time those CCT programs were started at the initial stage or were …

Global Analysis Of Population Growth And Decline, Mark Sneddon, William D. Pearse
Biology Posters
Species of plants and animals have populations that are declining at a rapid rate and possibly face extinction. To combat this decline, we must first understand where and why species are declining. We compared known species population growth rates in the COMPADRE (7024 different plant populations) and COMADRE (1927 different animal populations) databases to a variety of possible factors and other databases.

Exploring The Potential For Artificial Reefs In Coral Reef Restoration: Responses And Interactions Of Associated Biota To Varying Experimental Treatments In The Mexican Caribbean, Audie Kirk Kilfoyle
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Coral reefs are being negatively impacted by various causes worldwide, and direct intervention is often warranted following disturbance to restore or replace lost ecosystem structure and function. An experimental coral reef restoration study involving standardized artificial reef modules (ReefballsTM) was conducted in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula in the towns of Puerto Morelos and Akumal. The purpose was to explore the use of artificial structure for restoration and mitigation applications in a highly diverse and dynamic Caribbean coral reef environment by applying and evaluating the performance of select experimental treatments hypothesized to accelerate development of the associated biota. The first …

Entrepreneurship And Competitiveness In The Eu Member States, With Special Regard To The Visegrad Countries, Anita Pelle, Marcell Zoltán Végh
European Management Studies
Our research primarily aims at studying the competition and competitiveness in the EU internal market, both at the level of the EU and its member states. As the main tool of our analysis, we create three indicators based on the dataset and methodology of the World Economic Forum (WEF). These indicators are to measure the competitiveness of 1) the state, 2) the enterprise sector and 3) the institution of the market in the EU member states. In order to assess entrepreneurship, we apply the GEDI index. Then we compare our findings along the two dimensions. EU member states obviously form …

Enterprises’ Development In Peripheral Regions: Patterns And Determinants, Justyna Zygmunt
European Management Studies
The goal of the paper is to identify the essential determinants of enterprises’ growth in a peripheral region, with regard to particular patterns of regional development. Literature studies have been conducted to recognise the patterns and determinants of the development in question. Characteristics of lagging regions have been provided in the first section, while another section contains a discussion on aspects related to enterprises’ growth in non-core regions. The main finding is associated with a crucial value of innovation, knowledge spillovers, as well as social and human capital as fundamental for enterprises facing scarcity of regional endogenous resources. Thus, necessary …
