Autonomy In The Anthropocene? Libertarianism, Liberalism And The Legal Theory Of Environmental Regulation, Jason Maclean
Autonomy In The Anthropocene? Libertarianism, Liberalism And The Legal Theory Of Environmental Regulation, Jason Maclean
Dalhousie Law Journal
Can there be autonomy in the Anthropocene? Libertarian environmental law scholar Bruce Pardy's Ecolawgic: The Logic of Ecosystems and the Rule of Law argues that contemporary environmental law violates the right to autonomy and runs afoul of the rule of law. Pardyproposes an alternative model ofenvironmental law premised on the logic of ecosystems and free markets. Pardy's Ecolawgic suffers, however from the very same conceptual infirmities that substantially undermine the real-world application of the free market paradigm on which Ecolawgic is largely based. Notwithstanding this critical flaw, Ecolawgic may be read as an aspirational model of environmental law and policy …

Wave Energy Assessment In Southern Central Java Island And Control Method For Maximizing The Captured Power In Wave Energy Converters, Fatima Sultan Ghdayer Ali Alaryani
Theses
This thesis discusses the wave energy potential of the Indian Ocean on the south coast of Central Java Island, where no previous known similar study has been conducted. A control technique that involves a dynamic electrical model was established. The following objectives were achieved. The first was to determine the ideal location to implement wave energy conversion (WEC), and the second objective was to simulate the significant wave height by using the novel control method.
To achieve these goals, the following steps and procedures were implemented. Wave energy assessment was conducted for the Indian Ocean on the south coast of …

Performance Study For Capillary Machine-To-Machine Networks, Maisaa Othman Albaghdadi
Theses
Communication technologies witness a wide and rapid pervasiveness of wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. It is emerging to apply for data transfer among devices without human intervention. Capillary M2M networks represent a candidate for providing reliable M2M connectivity. In this thesis, we propose a wireless network architecture that aims at supporting a wide range of M2M applications (either real-time or non-real-time) with an acceptable QoS level. The architecture uses capillary gateways to reduce the number of devices communicating directly with a cellular network such as LTE. Moreover, the proposed architecture reduces the traffic load on the cellular network by providing capillary …

Naturally Occurring Acid Rock Drainage In The Anaconda-Pintler Mountain Range, Montana: A Case Study Of Geochemistry In Two Streams Flowing From Mount Evans, Margaret Doolittle
Graduate Theses & Non-Theses
Mount Evans is located in the Anaconda-Pintler mountain range of southwest Montana approximately 22 km southwest of Anaconda, Montana. Mount Evans appears reddish orange on Google Earth amongst the rest of the mountain range which is a grey white color, indicating the presence of limonite staining and probable sulfide mineralization. In addition, two streams draining opposite sides of the mountain, and either side of the continental divide have conspicuous white coatings on boulders that are clearly visible with Google Earth. During a mineral resource assessment in the 1980s, the USGS suggested that the Mount Evans area could be the top …
The Importance Of The Culturalization Process For The Transition From A Traditional Church To A Small Group-Focused Church, Young Lee
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this research is to clarify the importance of the process of culturalization, which takes place before a full-scale transition, to Korean churches that are attempting to change the direction of their ministries from traditional to small group-oriented ministries. Since the introduction of the small group ministry, Korean churches have been trying to convert to small group churches. Many churches, however, are struggling with the transition due to hastiness instead of following the right philosophy and roadmap. Having led cell group and small group ministries for the last ten years in Korean churches in both the United States …
A Delphi Study Of Aviation Maintenance Experts' Recommendations For A Model School Curriculum, Fred D. Dyen
A Delphi Study Of Aviation Maintenance Experts' Recommendations For A Model School Curriculum, Fred D. Dyen
Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations
The program described in this paper is the essential first step in reviving and reinitiating the delivery of aviation maintenance technology instruction. The demand for aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs) is rapidly increasing and there is a need to provide as many as 679,000 AMTs over the next 20 years (Boeing, 2016). Given the high cost of certification, new aviation maintenance schools are unlikely to be certificated in the near future, and ramping up the existing schools to meet the anticipated demand is unlikely without incorporating attractive cost-effective measures such as competency-based and distance education.
The purpose of this study is …
Endpoints After Empire: Explaining Varying Levels Of Democracy In Post-Communist Europe, William John Eger Jr.
Endpoints After Empire: Explaining Varying Levels Of Democracy In Post-Communist Europe, William John Eger Jr.
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This study seeks to determine the impetus behind varying levels of post-communist democratization in central and eastern Europe. It explores the different theories of democratization. The work takes a regional approach to examining the states. This approach isolates less traditional factors that contribute to democratic quality: history, culture and geography. Qualitative studies of each help explain why the countries of the region have such a varying level of rights and freedoms.
Modeling Gross Primary Production Of Midwest Maize And Soybean Croplands With Satellite And Gridded Weather Data, Gunnar Malek-Madani
Modeling Gross Primary Production Of Midwest Maize And Soybean Croplands With Satellite And Gridded Weather Data, Gunnar Malek-Madani
Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The gross primary production (GPP) metric is useful in determining trends in the terrestrial carbon cycle. Models that determine GPP utilizing the light use efficiency (LUE) approach in conjunction with biophysical parameters that account for local weather conditions and crop specific factors are beneficial in that they combine the accuracy of the biophysical model with the versatility of the LUE model. One such model developed using in situ data was adapted to operate with remote sensing derived leaf area index (LAI) data and gridded weather datasets. The model, known as the Light Use Efficiency GPP Model (EGM), uses a four …

With Light, Emily Howell
With Light, Emily Howell
English Theses & Dissertations
I am a photographer. I’ve spent years training myself to shut out 99.9% of the world, see things with one eye closed through the frame of my viewfinder and stop time for a single instant. With Light is a collection of lyrical nonfiction essays that explore those instants. Thematically, the essays focus largely on place, time and a search for a sense of belonging. In addition, they touch on grief, longing, fear, friendship, art and love. They are steeped in images. They are lyrical. In short, they are pieces from an album documenting my search for home.

The Social Experience Of The Euro, Jeffrey Atik
The Social Experience Of The Euro, Jeffrey Atik
Connecticut Journal of International Law
The recent wave of nationalism in Europe - most clearly marked by Brexit menaces the European Union and its institutions, including the Euro. As Europe heals from the loss of Great Britain, the Euro may serve as a continuing occasion for the construction of a European identity that will moderate receptivity to nationalist appeals. This essay examines the experience of the Euro as contributing to the formation of a European identity. Social experience, including negative social experience, with the Euro forges commonalities that unite as well as divide. The Euro remains territorially incomplete, its restricted zone of use signals incompleteness …

Consolidation Process Boundaries Of The Degradation Of Mechanical Properties In Compression Moulding Of Natural-Fibre Bio-Polymer Composites, Hossein Mohammad Khanlou, Peter Woodfield, John Summerscales, Wayne Hall
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
In spite of the volume of literature on natural fibres, bio-matrix materials and their composites, the choices of optimum process parameters such as moulding temperature, pressure and compression time are still largely based on experience, rules of thumb and general knowledge of the chemical and physical processes occurring in the melt during consolidation. The moulding process itself is a complex balance between processes that must occur for the composite to successfully consolidate and the onset of thermal degradation of the natural fibre and/or matrix materials. This paper brings together models of thermal penetration, melt infusion, thermal degradation and chemical degradation …
Searching Places Unknown: Law Enforcement Jurisdiction On The Dark Web, Ahmed Ghappour
Searching Places Unknown: Law Enforcement Jurisdiction On The Dark Web, Ahmed Ghappour
Faculty Scholarship
The use of hacking tools by law enforcement to pursue criminal suspects who have anonymized their communications on the dark web presents a looming flashpoint between criminal procedure and international law. Criminal actors who use the dark web (for instance, to commit crimes or to evade authorities) obscure digital footprints left behind with third parties, rendering existing surveillance methods obsolete. In response, law enforcement has implemented hacking techniques that deploy surveillance software over the Internet to directly access and control criminals’ devices. The practical reality of the underlying technologies makes it inevitable that foreign-located computers will be subject to remote …

Radiocarbon Dating Of A Multi-Phase Passage Tomb On Baltinglass Hill, Co. Wicklow., R Schulting, A Sheridan, A Mcclatchie, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Baltinglass is a multi-chamber Neolithic passage tomb in Co. Wicklow, Ireland, excavated in the 1930s. This paper presents the results of a radiocarbon dating programme on charred wheat grains and hazelnut shell found underlying the cairn, and on cremated human bone found within and near two of the monument’s five chambers. The results are surprising, in that three of the six determinations on calcined bone pre-date by one or two centuries the charred cereals and hazelnut shells sealed under the cairn, dating to c. 3600–3400 calbc. Of the remaining three bone results, one is coeval with the charred plant remains, …

The Bothnian Sea Ice Stream: Early Holocene Retreat Dynamics Of The South-Central Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, Sl Greenwood, Cc Clason, J Nyberg, M Jakobsson, P Holmlund
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
The Gulf of Bothnia hosted a variety of palaeo-glaciodynamic environments throughout the growth and decay of the last Fennoscandian Ice Sheet, from the main ice-sheet divide to a major corridor of marine- and lacustrine-based deglaciation. Ice streaming through the Bothnian and Baltic basins has been widely assumed, and the damming and drainage of the huge proglacial Baltic Ice Lake has been implicated in major regional and hemispheric climate changes. However, the dynamics of palaeo-ice flow and retreat in this large marine sector have until now been inferred only indirectly, from terrestrial, peripheral evidence. Recent acquisition of high-resolution multibeam bathymetry opens …
