L’Histoire Mondiale De L’Art, Au Défi D’Un Grand Récit, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel Apr 2017

L’Histoire Mondiale De L’Art, Au Défi D’Un Grand Récit, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel

Artl@s Bulletin

The Global Positioning System, Brendon Baker Apr 2017

The Global Positioning System, Brendon Baker

Physics Capstone Projects

This research study explores the Global Positioning System (GPS), its history, and the process of discovery needed to create the most accurate GPS possible, as well as the contemporary applications of GPS technology. Starting with the first satellite in space, GPS has been a work in progress. Originally pursued by the military for improvements to military tactics, GPS has become integrated into the everyday lives of millions of people around the world. How GPS determines location is a dichotomy, with simplistic theory and complex application. Many factors go into GPS to provide a consistent, accurate location. The orbital planes the …

Community Gardens And Ecological Citizenship: Their Potential And Limitations In Fostering Environmentalism, Michael J. Kennedy Apr 2017

Community Gardens And Ecological Citizenship: Their Potential And Limitations In Fostering Environmentalism, Michael J. Kennedy

Research Papers

Mainstream agricultural and food production methods are a major source of environmental degradation, which has not been addressed by large-scale and global initiatives. Alternatively, grassroots and local initiatives may be more effective at alleviating the causes of environmental degradation associated with food and agriculture. Specifically, community gardens are an important local greenspace that can be used to address and educate individuals about the importance of food and the environment. However, certain barriers need to be overcome and addressed before community gardens are successfully implement. The participation and interaction at community gardens may provide a pathway to long-term commitment to sustainability, …

Sources Of Sexual Knowledge, Sex Negativity, And Sexual Shame: Honors Capstone Thesis, Tara Joyce

KSU Journey Honors College Capstones and Theses

This study examined relations between (a) the sources of people’s knowledge about sex, (b) their trust in information obtained from each source, (c) sex-negative attitudes and misinformation about sex (SNAM), and (d) sexual shame. Using an online questionnaire, 354 participants from a large, comprehensive university in Georgia indicated the relative amount they learned about sex from 11 sources, the degree of trust in each as a source of sexual information, agreement with the 45 items comprising the measure of SNAM, and the Kyle Inventory of Sexual Shame (Kyle, 2013). The more participants expressed sex-negative attitudes and endorsed misconceptions about sex …

Yinka Shonibare Mbe's Critiques Of Empire And His Reception In Four Transnational Case Studies, Johanna Wild Apr 2017

Yinka Shonibare Mbe's Critiques Of Empire And His Reception In Four Transnational Case Studies, Johanna Wild

Art & Art History ETDs

In the wake of art history’s “global turn”, the installation art of Yinka Shonibare MBE has obtained vast visibility in the established centers of contemporary cultural practice in Europe and beyond. Shonibare is best known for his installations of mannequins that reenact canonized paintings and historical events culled from European modernity. Dressed in deceptively “African” Dutch Wax fabrics, Shonibare’s phenotypically ambiguous and headless mannequins ensnare audiences with a semblance of “exotic” difference, but ultimately resist the fixity of national, cultural, racial and, in some cases, gendered categorization through an incessant semiotic slippage. In his book, The Culture Game (2001), Olu …

The In-Between: Tea Talks, Lexa Walsh Apr 2017

The In-Between: Tea Talks, Lexa Walsh

The In-Between: Tea Talks

Created by Lexa Walsh and participating diners and writers

The In Between: Tea Talks is a series of intimate facilitated discussions over home cooked meals that bring together conflicting populations of artists, activists and workers to discuss topics affecting them in the Bay Area. The project gathers artists, writers, tech workers, “sharing economy” laborers (Uber and Lyft drivers, AirBnB hosts) and their critics (taxi drivers, tenants rights activists) together in a hospitable environment so each may share their positions in a safe yet open and critical dialogue. Each position is respectfully held in the space. The conversations are documented in …

Evolution, Ecology, And Disparities: Constructing Stature, Immune Functioning, And Reproduction In Brazilian Quilombo, And United States, Women, Anna C. Rivara

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to test how growth, reproduction, and immune functioning interact in two populations of adult women residing in vastly different socio-economic and ecological environments, the Kalunga quilombo in Brazil, and the United States of America. The presence of life history trade-offs was tested to determine how the different envirnonments, and socio-ecological contexts of the populations were creating differential risks for health and reproductive outcomes, and life history trade-offs.

I hypothesized that the Kalunga people, living in very difficult and harsh conditions, would experience greater amounts of, and more severe, life history trade-offs than the U.S. …

This research investigated the effect of political, economic, racial, academic, geographic data, and the components of the Race to the Top grant against the Race to the Top grant awards. Data for all 50 states and the District of Columbia was compiled from the federal Race to the Top documents, the Georgetown University Stateminder dataset, and the U.S. Census Bureau to create a combined dataset. The combined dataset included a combination of the 2009 scores from Delaware and Tennessee and the 2010 scores of all other states. Since the scores from 2009 only resulted in two winners, and the 2010 …

Disseminating Tornado Warnings To Rural Populations, Zebulon Charles Wallace Apr 2017

Disseminating Tornado Warnings To Rural Populations, Zebulon Charles Wallace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Tornado warnings are a form of persuasive communication that are intended to motivate people to take protective action. These warnings must reach all of the population exposed to the hazard no matter what time of day it is or where they are located. To accomplish this, multiple platforms are used to disseminate warning information. However, there is little research dedicated to how effective these platforms are in rural communities.Additionally, fatality rates tend to vary among rural communities, particularly between Tornado Alley and Dixie Alley; two high frequency tornado areas of the U.S. The objective of this research is to determine …

Human Experience Of Fountain Spaces In Denver And Albuquerque, Susanna Diller L Apr 2017

Human Experience Of Fountain Spaces In Denver And Albuquerque, Susanna Diller L

Geography ETDs

Concerns about water have been at the forefront of public conversation over the last few years, in no small part driven by situations like the drought in California. The drought prompted cities like Los Angeles to turn off public fountains, even though fountains have a very low resource impact. This interaction is more about what a fountain represents; particularly in dry regions, fountains have been used to display power, affluence, and social importance. It has been researched and is now taken for granted that public fountains are a public good, improving microclimates, reducing stress, and adding to the overall quality …

The Long Side Of The Tracks, James Metzger

The Tuxedo Archives

In just three short weeks I traveled upwards of 8000 miles of rail, circulating around an antiquated network of industrial savagery, from Oakland CA to Oakland CA, trading stories and cigarettes with other wayward travelers while waiting for more important trains of cattle and produce to take the tracks. ~excerpt from short story

Three Essays In Financial Economics, Da Ke Apr 2017

Three Essays In Financial Economics, Da Ke

Open Access Dissertations

My dissertation examines economic determinants of household financial decisions and investor behaviors. It contains three essays. The first essay investigates whether gender norms shape intra-household financial decision making. Analyzing microdata covering more than 30 million U.S. households, I document that families with a financially sophisticated husband are more likely to participate in the stock market than those with a wife of equal financial sophistication. Consistent with the gender norm hypothesis, the baseline effect is attenuated among individuals brought up by working mothers, but becomes stronger among descendants of pre-industrial societies in which women specialized in activities within the home and …

Differences in insurance coverage has significant impact on recommended screenings.

The study analyzes secondary data from 2011 to 2013 for three different health plans being Medicaid, Blue Care Network (BCN) and Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Michigan. Statistical methods were used to ascertain the best regression model for count data and the association …

Modeling Channel Response To Dam Removal In Lansing, Michigan, Using Swat, Ryan Filbin Apr 2017

Modeling Channel Response To Dam Removal In Lansing, Michigan, Using Swat, Ryan Filbin

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

The removal of dams has increased in recent decades in the United States, largely resulting from decaying infrastructure and greater efforts to restore rivers to a more natural, free-flowing state. Dam removal presents the opportunity for increased public safety, improved environmental prosperity, and improved economic prosperity in conjunction with riverfront revitalization projects. The City of Lansing, Michigan, contains two moderate-to high-risk dams along the Grand River that pose a significant risk to the surrounding area in the event of structural failure.

The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is applied to model the impacts of the Moores Park Dam and …

Measuring Quality Of Life For Shanghai’S Floating Population Employed In Urban Renewal Sites, Jacob A. Watkins, Gregory Veeck

Research and Creative Activities Poster Day

Chinese internal migrants continue to struggle to obtain social and economic equity in some of China’s largest cities. Shanghai, China’s largest city, houses one of the largest floating populations in the country. As city officials and the CPC continue to spend on urban renewal sites in the city proper, new opportunities may be emerging for migrant workers. These sites contain hundreds on new commercial and service based businesses that could potentially provide stable employment for rural-to-urban migrants in Shanghai and influence migrant quality of life as well as provide the means for migrants to remain in the city long-term. This …

The Allocation Of Time And Risk Of Lyme: A Case Of Ecosystem Service Income And Substitution Effects, Kevin Berry, Jude Bayham, Spencer Meyer, Eli Fenichel

ISER Reports

Forests are often touted for their ecosystem services, including outdoor recreation. Historically forests were a source of danger and were avoided. Forests continue to be reservoirs for infectious diseases and their vectorsa disservice. We examine how this disservice undermines the potential recreational services by measuring the human response to environmental risk using exogenous variation in the risk of contracting Lyme Disease. We find evidence that individuals substitute away from spending time outdoors when there is greater risk of Lyme Disease infection. On average individuals spent 1.54 fewer minutes per day outdoors at the average, 72 U.S. Centers for Disease Control …

Time After Time: An Iconographical Analysis Of Images Of Time And Eternity In The New Kingdom Netherworld Books, Amber Lue Ward Apr 2017

Time After Time: An Iconographical Analysis Of Images Of Time And Eternity In The New Kingdom Netherworld Books, Amber Lue Ward

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

To the ancient Egyptians, time in the afterlife differed from time on earth. In the Netherworld, time could be manipulated in ways unperceivable in the human realm: it was born and devoured, measured for the blessed dead, and inverted to rejuvenate the sun god and the blessed dead who accompanied him. Images of these occurrences were manifested pictorially in the Netherworld Books, compositions that traced the sun god's nocturnal journey through the Netherworld, from sunset in the evening to sunrise in the morning. This thesis deconstructs and analyzes the iconography of these scenes according to the artistic principles of ancient …

The New England Food System In 2060: Envisioning Tomorrow's Policy Through Today's Assessments, Margaret Sova Mccabe, Joanne Burke Apr 2017

The New England Food System In 2060: Envisioning Tomorrow's Policy Through Today's Assessments, Margaret Sova Mccabe, Joanne Burke

Maine Law Review

As the local food movement gains critical mass around the country, deep and important issues concerning food system policy arise. The modern American food system spans from agricultural production to food processing to food consumption, and finally, to health outcomes. The system’s components include economic, environmental, social, political, and scientific aspects that interact in ways that far outstrip any one discipline’s capacity to analyze and resolve problems. Additionally, the system is profoundly shaped by a complex architecture of laws and regulation. With much credit to the local and regional food movements, people have begun to question not only the current …

Zoning And Land Use Controls: Beyond Agriculture, Lisa M. Feldstein Apr 2017

Zoning And Land Use Controls: Beyond Agriculture, Lisa M. Feldstein

Maine Law Review

If one were playing a word association game and were asked what comes to mind when the terms “food” and “land use” are given, chances are high that the response would be “agriculture.” Yet every stage in the food system, from being grown or raised through being consumed, is place-based. Put differently, everything that happens with our food system involves land use in some way. Even the acquisition of aquatically sourced foods requires a journey that begins from the shore, and yet it is rare to consider the profound ways in which our every interaction with food system utilizes or …

"The Echo Chamber" by John Frick

Abstract: Political polarization seems to be rising in America and indeed across the world, and there does not seem to be a clear explanation of the reason behind it. Some attribute it to international events such as 9/11, while others blame the millennial generation; yet what if it is something else entirely? What if our ever increasing dependence on social media for news can have adverse effects on the political climate? The “echo chamber” in this case refers to the idea that social media users will often delete …
