Curiosity And What To Make Of It (Text And Video), Rebecca Gearhart Mafazy
Honorees for Teaching Excellence
Our curiosity about the world and about each other is one of the defining characteristics of being human. Curiosity drives creativity: how can we do it better? Curiosity drives courage: how far can we push our boundaries? And Curiosity drives compassion: how can we understand one another more deeply?
Kit Carson's Last Fight: The Adobe Walls Campaign Of 1864, David A. Pafford
Kit Carson's Last Fight: The Adobe Walls Campaign Of 1864, David A. Pafford
History ETDs
In the fall of 1864, Brigadier General James H. Carleton sent Kit Carson and about four hundred men on a punitive campaign against the Kiowa and Comanche Indians of the high plains. The resulting battle was one of the largest in the history of North American Indian Wars. Yet this conflict has been relegated to historical obscurity.
In this paper, I examine why Kit Carson’s 1864 Adobe Walls Campaign remains obscure, I measure the success of the mission, and place it in the larger context of nineteenth century Indian Wars, particularly those prosecuted against Plains tribes.

A Multilevel Examination Of The Black Middle Class, Segregation, And Neighborhood Crime, Claire A. Greene
A Multilevel Examination Of The Black Middle Class, Segregation, And Neighborhood Crime, Claire A. Greene
Theses
In The Declining Significance of Race, William Julius Wilson (1987) raised key questions about the fate of urban black class structure and the social organization of black communities in the wake of civil rights era reforms. Unlike in previous decades, Wilson asserted that today’s black neighborhoods comprise almost exclusively of the most disadvantaged segments of the African American population, and therefore lack the basic opportunities, resources, and social controls necessary to reduce crime. In response, this study moves away from a focus on the “ghetto” poor to contextualize the neighborhood crime conditions of middle class blacks. Drawing on social …

In Defence Of Intrinsic Human Rights: Edmund Burke’S Controversial Prosecution Of Warren Hastings, Governor-General Of Bengal, Chris Monaghan
In Defence Of Intrinsic Human Rights: Edmund Burke’S Controversial Prosecution Of Warren Hastings, Governor-General Of Bengal, Chris Monaghan
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
For the first time, this article examines the impeachment trial of Warren Hastings from a human rights perspective. Even now, the seven year impeachment trial retains a degree of controversy, particularly as to its merits, and to the motivation of Edmund Burke, the man responsible for holding Hastings to account. The trial resulted in the clash between the reality of Britain's colonial expansion for many contemporaries and a defence of the intrinsic human rights of the Company's Indian subjects. If for many, it is debatable as to how successful Burke was in raising awareness of 'human rights' and whether the …
Concentration Of Metals Associated With The Native Copper Deposits Of Northern Michigan, Daniel R. Blakemore, C. Renee Sparks, Nathaniel H. Bos
Concentration Of Metals Associated With The Native Copper Deposits Of Northern Michigan, Daniel R. Blakemore, C. Renee Sparks, Nathaniel H. Bos
The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon
The Keweenaw Peninsula of northern Michigan is home to the largest accumulation of native copper in the world. Native copper deposits are hosted in the 1.1 billion-year old midcontinent rift which extends from Kansas, up through Lake Superior, around into lower Michigan, but is only exposed in the Keweenaw region. Native copper is found in the vesicular and brecciated flow tops of the volcanism associated with this rift, within the interflow conglomerate that developed in-between individual flows, and also minor native copper deposits are found with the copper sulfide deposits in the Nonesuch Shale. The purpose of this study was …
From Oppel To Callomon (And Beyond): Building A High-Resolution Ammonite-Based Biochronology For The Jurassic System, Kn Page
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
By 1849, Alcide d'Orbigny had proposed a very modern looking global subdivision of a Jurassique ‘System’, into a sequence of 10 étages. D'Orbigny's stages were based on a basic biostratigraphical framework, but there were still a number of issues with its actual demonstrable applicability internationally. In 1856, Albert Oppel took d'Orbigny's framework and, as stated by W.J.Arkell in 1933, ‘breath[ed] new life into it…placing the whole science of stratigraphical geology on a new footing’. Oppel recognized eight ‘Etagen’, divided into a sequence of ‘zones’ which he considered to be time-related to correlation units of theoretically universal application – a very …

Was Jack The Ripper A Slaughterman? Human-Animal Violence And The World’S Most Infamous Serial Killer, Andrew Knight, Katherine D. Watson
Cruelty to Animals and Human Violence Collection
Hundreds of theories exist concerning the identity of “Jack the Ripper”. His propensity for anatomical dissection with a knife—and in particular the rapid location and removal of specific organs—led some to speculate that he must have been surgically trained. However, re-examination of a mortuary sketch of one of his victims has revealed several aspects of incisional technique highly inconsistent with professional surgical training. Related discrepancies are also apparent in the language used within the only letter from Jack considered to be probably authentic. The techniques he used to dispatch his victims and retrieve their organs were, however, highly consistent with …
Turkey And The International Law Of The Sea, Ekrem Korkut
Turkey And The International Law Of The Sea, Ekrem Korkut
SJD Dissertations
The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea [hereinafter: LOSC] is widely accepted as the constitution of the oceans. Only four countries in the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea voted against the LOSC: The United States, Venezuela, Israel, and Turkey. Turkey voted against the LOSC because of dissatisfaction with the provision concerning the breadth of the territorial sea (Article 3), the delimitation of the territorial sea (Article 15), and the regime of islands (Article 121). With regard to other provisions of the LOSC, Turkish delegates at the Conference made supportive explanations. This …

Out Of The Outhouse: The Impact Of Place-Based Policies On Dwelling Characteristics In Appalachia, Daniel S. Grossman, Brad R. Humphreys, Jane E. Ruseski
Economics Faculty Working Papers Series
The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) administers and partially funds investment projects designed to improve economic conditions in the Appalachian Region, an area of persistent poverty and reduced economic opportunity in the eastern US in and around the Appalachian mountains. Previous research on the effectiveness of ARC programs is mixed. We analyze the impact of ARC investment projects related to expanding sewerage and waste water treatment on dwelling characteristics. Results from a difference-in-differences model using a quasi experimental approach show that ARC investment projects improved access to running water, and increased sewer hook-ups and indoor bathrooms in dwellings.

The Suzuki Method: Influences Of Shinichi Suzuki On Japanese Music Education, Moriah L. Richards
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis will study the history of Japanese music education philosophies and pedagogy techniques. Specific focus has been given to the music education methods and philosophies of renowned Japanese music educator, Shinichi Suzuki. Suzuki’s views on the learning processes of children have greatly impacted the field of music education. Suzuki held the belief that the language acquisition process and the learning processes of children were intricately connected. He spent years applying his research to the field of music education. His resulting pedagogy techniques are now known as the Suzuki Method. The Suzuki Method, which has been adapted in various ways …
Forests On The Edge: Forest Restoration And Concepts Of Nature In Northern New Mexico, Jordan W. Stone
Forests On The Edge: Forest Restoration And Concepts Of Nature In Northern New Mexico, Jordan W. Stone
Geography ETDs
Dozens of catastrophic forest fires have impacted New Mexican communities over the last two decades, threatening humans, property, and livelihoods. Ecologically, forest systems are stressed by historically unprecedented tree density, drought, increased temperature, and dwindling ecological diversity, further increasing fire danger. An increasingly common response to these threats is to actively manage New Mexico’s forests using mechanical tree thinning and prescribed fire, with a goal of “restoring” forests to a healthier ecological state. Restoring forests is both a scientific and cultural act. While the science is well studied, land managers often struggle to understand how human values impact forest restoration …

Undiscovered Country: Towards A History Of The Criminal 'Underworld', Heather Shore
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
The concept of the underworld is a central feature in popular histories of crime and criminal behaviour but one that has tended to be dismissed by academic historians as somewhat nebulous and indefinable. This article seeks to bridge this gap by suggesting that the construction of a chronological history or model of the underworld can further understandings of societal attitudes towards crime and criminality. Drawing on case studies and snapshots of deviant cultures and behaviours from the eighteenth century to the 1960s the discussion highlights the role of the underworld and its relationship with social panics and social network theories …

The L. & H. Huning Mercantile Company: A Case Study Of Mercantile Conquest In The Rio Abajo Region Of New Mexico, 1848-1880, Ricardo S. Gonzales
History ETDs
This master’s thesis is a case study of the L. & H. Huning Mercantile Company, a mercantile partnership in New Mexico during the territorial period. Louis and Henry Huning, a pair of brothers who immigrated to New Mexico from Germany in 1859, established wholesale and retail enterprises in the Arizona and New Mexico territories. Their main storehouse was founded in Los Lunas, New Mexico, in 1871 following the departure of Erhardt Franz to St. Louis.
L. & H. Huning became a successful merchandising business in the Rio Abajo by establishing a mercantile monopoly in Los Lunas. The introduction of free-market …

Ethnographic Experiences With Female Plantation And Apparel Workers Of Sri Lanka: A Methodological Reflection, Prajna Seneviratne
Ethnographic Experiences With Female Plantation And Apparel Workers Of Sri Lanka: A Methodological Reflection, Prajna Seneviratne
The Qualitative Report
Over the years, feminist ethnographers have engaged in a debate critiquing the practice of ethnography in the light of feminist research principles (Enslin, 1994; Patai, 1991; Stacey, 1988; Visweswaran, 1997). However, such literature has left space for further debate on whether ethnographic practices indeed are paradoxical to feminist values in research. Furthermore, while a few writers claim familiarity with conditions outside of the “west” (e.g., Enslin, 1994; Visweswaran, 1997), the majority of these debates and discussions fall outside the boundaries of the third world. As such there exists a gap between “ethnography as a way of feminist research” as prescribed …
Immigration: Rhetoric Vs. Empirical Evidence, Kolleen Rask
Immigration: Rhetoric Vs. Empirical Evidence, Kolleen Rask
HCAA Continuing Education Day
Questions about immigration not only took center stage in last year’s presidential election, but they also proved to be extremely divisive for the country. Many people have a “sense” of why immigration is good or bad for the United States, sometimes formed on the basis of a specific story that shows a good or bad outcome, sometimes based on a broader utopian or dystopian view of the world. But few have taken the time to really study the issue or even consider what questions should be asked. We’ll look at immigration into the United States – both legal and undocumented …
Social Awareness Campaigns: Raising Awareness On Human Trafficking In India, Neha Pondicherry
Social Awareness Campaigns: Raising Awareness On Human Trafficking In India, Neha Pondicherry
Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference
Human trafficking is a persistent international problem that results in the subjugation of over 1 million people annually. The mass exploitation and abuse of humans for personal gain has taken many different forms over the span of history, including slavery, domestic servitude, labor bondage, etc. Many social media campaigns are not successful in India because they do not take into account the lack of education and minimal access to technology and other methods of communication. Rural villages actually respond most effectively to media use. In my research, I devised an entirely new social awareness campaign to be executed in India …

Evaporite Karst Geohazards In The Delaware Basin, Texas: Review Of Traditional Karst Studies Coupled With Geophysical And Remote Sensing Characterization, Kevin W. Stafford, Wesley A. Brown, Jon T. Ehrhart, Adam F. Majzoub, Jonathan D. Woodard
International Journal of Speleology
Evaporite karst throughout the Gypsum Plain of west Texas is complex and extensive, including manifestations ranging from intrastratal brecciation and hypogene caves to epigene features and suffosion caves. Recent advances in hydrocarbon exploration and extraction has resulted in increased infrastructure development and utilization in the area; as a result, delineation and characterization of potential karst geohazards throughout the region have become a greater concern. While traditional karst surveys are essential for delineating the subsurface extent and morphology of individual caves for speleogenetic interpretation, these methods tend to underestimate the total extent of karst development and require surficial manifestation of karst …
Culture, Curriculum, Cognition: Contrastive Rhetorics Today, David Beach
Culture, Curriculum, Cognition: Contrastive Rhetorics Today, David Beach
Student Success in Writing Conference (1999-2021)
Contrastive rhetoric is often seen as an obstacle in negotiating meaning. Past studies have focused on one of three discourse features: language, cognition, or discipline. This study examines the combination of discourse features creating a complex rhetoric to help students negotiate meaning. Attendees will gain a better understanding of contrastive rhetorics, why they clash, and how to manage, not necessarily modify, those clashes.

Phylogenetic And Ecological Analysis Of Two Populations Of The Kitsatchie Painted Crayfish, Orconectes Maletae (Decapoda: Cambaridae), Larrimy Beth Brown
Biology Theses
The primary aim of this study was to assess the conservation status of the East Texas population of the Kistachie Painted Crayfish, Orconectes maletae. Orconectes maletae has been given a Global Heritage Ranking of G2, or imperiled, because of population declines in the Kisatchie Bayou drainage in Louisiana; however, similar data for Texas is lacking. For the current study, surveys of 25 historical sites in Texas were conducted in the Cypress Creek and Caddo Lake drainage from June to August 2014 and revealed that O. maletae was either absent or in low enough abundance to evade detection at close …
1972 - The Old World Background Of The Irrigation System Of San Antonio, Texas (Southwestern Studies Series: No 35); Glick, Thomas F.
Miscellaneous Publications
An in depth work that compares the Old-World irrigation systems established in the late fifteenth century on the islands off Spain (Canary Islands) and the technology/works applied in "New Spain," most notably, in the San Antonio, Texas, region. The Spaniards brought with them arid-land techniques, including technology and institutional framework for irrigation and distribution of water. Thomas Glick shows how the settlers adapted the Old-World irrigation principles and practices introduced into Spain by the Muslims in the Middle Ages while embracing other irrigation methods in their new environment.
