Environmental Management In Richmond, Virginia: A Case Study Of Reedy Creek, Emily Onufer, Jared Goldbach Ehmer, Andrew Loesch, Christie Marsh
Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects
This report analyzes the Reedy Creek restoration project through four distinct lenses and aims to achieve a fuller understanding of the factors influencing the project’s success or failure. We hope this report contributes to a greater appreciation of the complex and vast amount of decisions both cities and stakeholders make when complying with environmental regulations. Moreover, we hope to provide invaluable learning opportunities for future environmental projects undertaken in the City of Richmond.
Paper prepared for the Environmental Studies Senior Seminar/Geography Capstone.

Reedy Creek: Formal And Informal Policies Influencing The Stream Restoration, Emily Onufer
Reedy Creek: Formal And Informal Policies Influencing The Stream Restoration, Emily Onufer
Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects
Many analyses, especially in the field of sociology, have debated the influence of informal groups such as nonprofits, coalitions, and consultants on formal policy-making bodies, mainly government agencies (see West 2004, Verloo2016). The Reedy Creek restoration project involved numerous policy-makers and stakeholders, all of whom influenced the project’s direction and outcomes in some way. Policy was a driving force behind the project from its inception. This analysis examines the roles and influence of the various stakeholders involved in the Reedy Creek restoration project, and attempts to analyze the influence formal and informal policy-making bodies can have on small-scale environmental management …

Food Security At The University Of Richmond, Kayla Sherman, Donald Edmonds, Yuncheng Liu
Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects
The University of Richmond’s Strategic Plan states the University’s goal to be “a leader in innovative practices that sustain our environmental, human, and financial resources” (Crutcher 2017). The University has also signed multiple national and global sustainability commitments such as the Talloires Declaration (2003), the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment, (2007) and the American Campuses Acton Climate Pledge (2015). These commitments set ambitious climate action goals and address the responsibility of colleges and universities not only to cultivate an environmental consciousness on campus but also to transform the conventional operation systems on which college and universities depend. While …

Reedy Creek: A Stream Science And Spatial Statistics Approach, Jared Goldbach Ehmer, Andrew Loesch
Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects
In 2009, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued updated rules regarding Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) levels for three primary pollutants in the Chesapeake Bay: nitrogen, phosphorus, and total suspended sediment (TSS). The EPA required Richmond to draft Watershed Implementation Plans (WIPs) detailing individual pollution reduction goals and specific actions required to achieve those goals. The City of Richmond intended to complete stream restoration projects on five urban streams, including Reedy Creek. The City of Richmond commissioned Timmons Group to complete erosion analyses and recommend stream sections for restoration. The following (1) examines the relationship between spatial stream statistics …
Achieving Waste & Emissions Reduction Goals On University Of Richmond Campus: The Biodigester Approach, Joe Walderman, Alexa Williams
Achieving Waste & Emissions Reduction Goals On University Of Richmond Campus: The Biodigester Approach, Joe Walderman, Alexa Williams
Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects
This project proposes the installation of a small-scale anaerobic digester (biodigester). This is a reactor that breaks down biodegradable organic waste producing biogas. Food waste is considered one of the most efficient for producing biogas of typical biodigester feedstocks (Poschl, 2010). The UR Dining Hall produces 614 lbs of food waste per day to be used as feedstock, with landscaping scraps available for additional feed. The University boiler plant is capable of using biogas for heat production, making the plant a suitable destination for the digester's waste output. The digester may allow for waste diversion and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions …

Inclusive Globalization: New Philosophy Of China's Belt And Road Initiative, Liu Weidong
Inclusive Globalization: New Philosophy Of China's Belt And Road Initiative, Liu Weidong
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is not only China's new action to drive its open and global development but also its potential contributions to the reform of global economic governance. The BRI's core theme is to deploy the Silk Road Spirit (SRS) to promote economic and social cooperation among countries along the ancient Silk Road while the SRS refers to the idea of pursuing "peaceful and cooperative, open and inclusive, learning from each other, and mutual beneficial and win-win situation", which has passed on generation by generation on the silk roads. As economic globalization is at a crossroad and …
Study On Relationship Between The Belt And Road Initiative And Regional Development Strategies Of China, Liu Hui, Liu Weidong
Study On Relationship Between The Belt And Road Initiative And Regional Development Strategies Of China, Liu Hui, Liu Weidong
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The Belt and Road Initiative is a long-term overall strategy of China's all round opening-up. The regional coordination strategy among the four regions (the East, the Middle, the Northeast, and the West) has been China's general regional development strategy since the beginning the 11th Five-Year Plan in 2006. In the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020), the Belt and Road Initiative, the Yangtze River Economic Zone, and the coordinated development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei are determined to be the guide for expanding new space of regional development. We argue that the "Belt and Road Initiative" is China's top-level national strategy with the global vision …

Identification Of Global Strategic Shipping Pivot, Wang Chengjin, Chen Yunhao
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
With the fast development of global trade and transportation of oil and minerals, reliance of national economic development on maritime shipping is increasing and thus shipping security becomes a major part of national security. For China, building strategic maritime shipping pivots is a key component of the development of the 21th Century Maritime Silk Road, and the security of international trade as well. This study tries to develop the notion of strategic shipping pivot and a method to identify strategic pivots at the global scale. The analysis results presented in this paper indicate that global strategic shipping pivots have clear …

Study On Better Organization Of China-Europe Express Train, Wang Jiao'e, Jing Yue, Wang Chengjin
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Connectivity of infrastructure is a priority component of China's Belt and Road Initiative. As an important achievement of such connectivity and a symbolic co-transport platform, China-Europe Express Train (CEET), organized and operated by Chinese local government, has become a new way for cargo transportation among China, Central Asia, and Europe. This paper first analyzes the significance of CEET as well as its problems, and then raises two view points to correctly understand CEET, that is, CEET plays a limited role in the shipment of China's imported and exported commodities, and this transport model can achieve profit only if selective goods …

Vegetation Habitat Mapping Of Mammoth Cave National Park Using Multi-Date Landsat-8 Imagery And Lidar Data, Hongli Yang
Vegetation Habitat Mapping Of Mammoth Cave National Park Using Multi-Date Landsat-8 Imagery And Lidar Data, Hongli Yang
Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal
Vegetation habitat mapping can be regarded as a model predicting the geographic distribution of plant cover types from mapped environmental variables. This paper discusses three environmental factors- slope, aspect and bedrock geology that determined different habitat types in Mammoth Cave National Park. The variation of aspect and slope can largely determine the amount of solar radiation and water available to vegetation, which influences the contrasting habitat types formed in a long term. Bedrock geology, one of the most influential factor in the study area, primarily controls the soil types and drainage conditions that support the various habitat types. The habitat …

The Escalation Of Trump Stormfront And The 2016 Election, Dianne Dentice
Symposium on Arts and Research
Since David Duke ran for public office and was elected to the Louisiana state legislature in 1989, leaders of the far political right have been trying to gain a foothold in mainstream electoral politics. In a campaign tinged with populist rhetoric, Donald Trump emerged victorious in the 2016 election. What does this mean for the American white nationalist movement?

Solidarity Starts At Home: An Analysis Of The Polish Perception Of Social Inclusion And Exclusion Of Migrants, Dagmara K. Franczak
Solidarity Starts At Home: An Analysis Of The Polish Perception Of Social Inclusion And Exclusion Of Migrants, Dagmara K. Franczak
International Studies Honors Projects
With the Eurosceptic and anti-refugee Law and Justice Party in power in Poland, advocating for the rights of Polish migrants in the Brexit negotiations, the question, then, arises: how do Poles simultaneously justify the idea of a borderless EU and the rejection of refugees? I argue that all actors in the debate on social inclusion and exclusion of migrants are using the value of solidarity, but defining it differently because of the collective identities that they prioritize. There are two prevalent, historically grounded sides in the debate: one side is liberal, and cosmopolitan, the other is illiberal and ethno-nationalist.

A wide range of globally significant biomass fuels were burned during the fourth Fire Lab at Missoula Experiment (FLAME-4). A multi-channel photoacoustic absorption spectrometer (PAS) measured dry absorption at 405, 532, and 660 nm and thermally denuded (250 °C) absorption at 405 and 660 nm. Absorption coefficients were broken into contributions from black carbon (BC), brown carbon (BrC), and lensing following three different methodologies, with one extreme being a method that assumes the thermal denuder effectively removes organics and the other extreme being a method based on the assumption that black carbon (BC) has an Ångström exponent of unity. The …

The Evolution Of Pattern Of Criminalizing The Unknown Crime Of Rape In Global Scale, Sahar Jalili
SJD Dissertations
Rape is a crime globally condemned, yet it's one of the most controversial crimes at the time. What this research did was to gather the information of countries' rape laws in their penal codes from all over the world and create a pattern of how countries on a global scale criminalize rape and how far they have changed in the past century. The goal was to produce a rape criminalization map of the world to show which elements are playing the main factors and which factors are missing, how close countries define rape and how different their reactions are.

Prescribed Fire And Deer Ticks: A Management Method For The Primary Vector Of Lyme Disease In The Eastern United States, Shane M. Tripp
Prescribed Fire And Deer Ticks: A Management Method For The Primary Vector Of Lyme Disease In The Eastern United States, Shane M. Tripp
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
The United States is currently amid a public health crisis caused by the bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi, that is responsible for Lyme disease. A deer tick, Ixodes scapularis, is the primary vector for these bacteria in the Eastern United States and its explosive population increase and range expansion in the past several decades is responsible for the rapid spread of the disease. Understanding the cause of this growth is dependent on the habitat characteristics that determine the deer tick’s abilities to survive, reproduce, and disperse into new areas and the changes that may have released it from historic limits. Fire suppression …
Reactions To Sexism And Sexual Objectification, Olivia Rivera
Reactions To Sexism And Sexual Objectification, Olivia Rivera
Undergraduate Research Conference
Men and women have different attitudes about sexism (Phys.org Staff, 2015). Men are more likely than women to be indifferent about sexist situations.
However, most studies have not examined attitudes that college students have about sexist situations, jokes, and advertisements.
Therefore the aim of the current study is to examine gender differences and perceptions of sexism/sexual objectification in college students.

Cities throughout the African continent have been developing at an unprecedented pace, many of them due to the influence of the tourism industry. This is particularly true in Tanzania, a country famous for its national parks and their draw to tourists who help provide money for development. However, the only way to get the whole story on how to spend this money is through the experiences and needs of the people themselves. This study focuses on a small town in northeastern Tanzania, Mto wa Mbu, situated near Lake Manyara National Park, and its people’s perceptions of the park and community. …
Anticipating The Effects Of Economic Displacement In Marine Space With Agent Based Models, Kevin P. Nebiolo
Anticipating The Effects Of Economic Displacement In Marine Space With Agent Based Models, Kevin P. Nebiolo
Doctoral Dissertations
As marine space is managed into appropriate resource use areas, it is inevitable that some is allocated towards a mutually exclusive spatial activity. This exclusion results in displacement that has real economic consequences. When a wind energy area is placed in coastal waters, navigable space is reduced and vessels are displaced from their former routes. The USCG is concerned that re-routing will result in vessels navigating within closer proximity than they would otherwise in an open ocean scenario, and fear that this will increase the risk of vessel collision (USCG 2016). They recommend research into tools that are capable of …
