The Alleviation Of Slum Poverty In The Philippines: A Critical Examination Of Poverty Reduction Programs, Adyel Duran Apr 2017

The Alleviation Of Slum Poverty In The Philippines: A Critical Examination Of Poverty Reduction Programs, Adyel Duran

Academic Festival

My study aims to analyze the dynamics of slum poverty in the Philippines, as well as the success and failures of federal government poverty reduction strategies. This will be achieved by connecting theory and practice through an analysis of various development theories that are related to the outcomes of current federal poverty reduction strategies. Based on original field research conducted in the Philippines, the findings indicate that federal poverty reduction programs have not been effectively implemented due to institutional failures rooted in extractive political and economic institutions. The study concludes with policy recommendations that argue for a more comprehensive ‘capabilities’ …

Resource Scarcity And Monumental Architecture: Cost Signaling On Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Chile, Dylan Davis, Carl P. Lipo Apr 2017

Resource Scarcity And Monumental Architecture: Cost Signaling On Rapa Nui (Easter Island), Chile, Dylan Davis, Carl P. Lipo

Research Days Posters 2016-2019

Costly signaling theory (CST) explains a variety of elaborate behavioral displays as a consequence of competition over resources when the risk of direct conflict is high. Within an archaeological context, monumental architecture is potentially explained as a facet of costly signaling between individuals and groups. On Rapa Nui, CST offers an explanation for the construction of labor-intensive monuments including massive statues (moai) and ceremonial platforms (ahu). Using hypotheses derived from CST and spatial data about the distribution of archaeological features, the degree to which CST accounts for the investment in prehistoric monumental architecture on Rapu Nui is evaluated.

Ecological And Evolutionary Relationships Between Feather Mites And Parulid Warblers, Alix Elizabeth Matthews Apr 2017

Ecological And Evolutionary Relationships Between Feather Mites And Parulid Warblers, Alix Elizabeth Matthews

Student Theses and Dissertations

Host-symbiont relationships are ubiquitous in nature, yet the evolutionary and ecological processes that have shaped these intricate associations are not well understood. Here, I explored the complex symbiosis between feather mites and their warbler hosts. I first considered how ecological context may influence feather mite abundance on two ecologically dissimilar warbler species, and how feather mite abundance may in turn influence the current reproduction and annual survival of hosts. Ecological context of hosts does play a role in feather mite abundance, and even though current reproduction may not be influenced by feather mite abundance, annual survival may be at a …

The Relationship Between A Nation-State Being Land-Locked And Its Economic Development, Natalie Fulk Apr 2017

The Relationship Between A Nation-State Being Land-Locked And Its Economic Development, Natalie Fulk

16th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Performance (2017)

This research will look at the relationship between a nation-state being landlocked and its economic development. Based on the literature, my theory is that landlocked nation-states will have less economic development than coastal nation-states. Also, the more that a nation-state is landlocked, measured as the more countries around it and the farther away it is from the coast, the less economic development it will have. I will look at a dataset related to economic growth and compare countries to evaluate my theory.

Mechanism Of Adsorption Of Actives Onto Microporous Functionalised Calcium Carbonate (Fcc), Charlotte L. Levy, G. Peter Matthews, Giuliano M. Laudone, Samuel Beckett, Andrew Turner, Joachim Schoelkopf, Patrick A.C. Gane

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Microporous ‘functionalised’ calcium carbonate (FCC) has potential for use as a carrier for the controlled release of ‘actives’, by permeation and diffusion. We have investigated the nature of the FCC surface and the mechanism of adsorption of two typical actives, namely the anti-inflammatory drug aspirin and the flavour compound vanillin, from chloroform and aqueous ethanolic solutions. There is indirect evidence from the quantitative perturbation of Tóth isotherms that their adsorption is hindered by a stagnant diffusion layer of water trapped in the micro-porosity of the FCC. To complement previous studies of the surface of FCC, it was also tested with …

How To Plan, Budget, Write, And Implement A Student Sustainability Grant, Annalisa Wilder Apr 2017

How To Plan, Budget, Write, And Implement A Student Sustainability Grant, Annalisa Wilder

Honors Theses

The Student Sustainability Grant program was created to give students valuable grant writing experience and to promote a culture of sustainability on Western Michigan University’s campus. Despite the enormous opportunity that this program provides, few students apply for the grants with their sustainable ideas. Even fewer students are able to fully complete the projects, research, and initiatives that receive funding. In order to help increase the number of grants that are fully implemented and to provide students interested in writing a grant with a useful resource, this guide was created. This ‘how-to manual’ provides an undergraduate student’s perspective on the …

American Flooding And National Security, Tavish M. Riley Apr 2017

American Flooding And National Security, Tavish M. Riley

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Flooding is a powerful force of nature that shows no inherent care for where it strikes. This study mapped flood locations and frequencies in the United States. The data presented is an analysis of major flood events in the lower forty-eight states between 1970-2016. The maps reflect the death tolls, locations, and overall cost of their damages, along with precipitation data and stream gauge readings. This study focuses on larger flood events, particularly those resulting in true damage to both the nation’s infrastructure and economy.

Results suggest that there are areas in the United States that have higher potential for …

Indian Gurus Uproot Yoga's Traditions, Alexandra T. Bright Apr 2017

Indian Gurus Uproot Yoga's Traditions, Alexandra T. Bright

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Yoga, an Indian practice with roots over 4000 years old, is a relatively new practice in the United States. The U.S. first welcomed Indian gurus and their yogic spiritual teachings in 1893 with Swami Vivekananda at the Chicago Parliament of Religions. Yoga has been an ever-evolving practice since its start, changing with the times, though this change has been slow and contained within the subcontinent of India. When yoga was introduced to the U.S. it became an American practice with nearly all of its roots and traditions disappearing. The goal of this study is to discover if the Indian gurus …

Does The El Nino Southern Oscillation Play A Role In The Spatial Distribution Of Tornadoes In The United States?, Katarena A. Jarrell Apr 2017

Does The El Nino Southern Oscillation Play A Role In The Spatial Distribution Of Tornadoes In The United States?, Katarena A. Jarrell

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is an event that is happening in the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of South America. During an ENSO event, there are periods where the water off the coast is unusually warm or unusually cold. When the water temperature changes, it causes the air pressure that is above the water to change. The temperature change affects the weather pattern worldwide and along with it severe weather outbreaks. In a 2008 study by Cook and Schaefer, they mapped historical points for winter outbreaks for the three types of years associated with the ENSO event. These …

Poverty And Its Effects On Food And Education In Children, Shari Holland Apr 2017

Poverty And Its Effects On Food And Education In Children, Shari Holland

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

Throughout time, there has been a gap between those who are rich in their economic means and those less fortunate. Exemplified by the infamous saying, “the rich get richer as the poor get poorer,” some claim that there is a trickling effect, where all the money trickles down to the poor, equalizing the economy. The individuals who are poor have less opportunities, which would decrease chances of success in life. The economic situations of the adults ultimately impact the most vulnerable, the children. Data from childstats.gov was used for this study and pertained to children living in three family situations: …

Tainted Benevolence: Sources Of Funding For The Liverpool School Of Tropical Medicine From 1898-1915, Lucy Cummins

Young Historians Conference

The final two decades of the nineteenth century saw a race among European powers to secure vast tracts of land in Africa for colonization and exploitation. However, the empires of the West soon found that effective occupation of this new continent would not end with a physical takeover. In order to benefit politically and financially from their new territories, colonial governments would have to confront a series of unforeseen challenges, one of the largest of which was the prevalence of so-called "tropical" diseases. Few doctors in Europe had any experience with or understanding of conditions from sleeping sickness to Guinea …

Syrian Refugees: Morality Or Security?, Michael H. Fields Apr 2017

Syrian Refugees: Morality Or Security?, Michael H. Fields

COLA Research and Creativity Conference

The Syrian Civil War has been an ongoing conflict and struggle since it began in 2011. Syrian’s may have been unsatisfied with the dictatorship that they were subject to, but certainly they had never hoped for this “revolution” to have such a negative impact on the country and their lives. Thus, the civil war has spawned millions of refugees from Syria. Despite these existing problems, the United States under President Trump decided to take in Syrian refugees no longer. Is there a real justification for this action?

Answering this question requires one to consider why we would fear these refugees …

Cultural Bias In The European Translations Of Thomas More's Utopia, Alisa M. Folen Apr 2017

Cultural Bias In The European Translations Of Thomas More's Utopia, Alisa M. Folen

Young Historians Conference

Throughout history, the translators of Thomas More’s Utopia have altered the text to align with their religious, political, or national beliefs. This paper explores how cultural bias influenced the translations and paratexts of Utopia using examples from England, Germany, and Poland from the seventeenth century to the twentieth century. It examines the similarities and differences between the original text and the translated text by considering the social, political, and economic context of both. This paper demonstrates how Utopia is a powerful unit of analysis to study European cultures during the modern age.

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

To meet the need of increasingly economic development and large populations with limited land resource, large scale of coastal reclamation was conducted as one of the most important resolution schemes. Driving by economic growth, coastal reclamation in China has proliferated and expanded nationwide. Various types of coastal reclamations are keeping rapid expansion rate in recent years. Nevertheless, behind the huge economic benefits, coastal reclamation exploitation has brought great loss of coastal natural resources and damaged coastal wetland ecosystem. As the transitional zone between ocean and terrestrial system, coastal wetlands play a crucial role in conserving biodiversity and maintaining dynamic balance …

The Trayless Dining Movement And The University's Future Transition, Jacquelyn Pearlmutter, J. R. Mastro

Geography and the Environment Capstone Projects

Across the globe, and in the United States, food waste causes negative financial, environmental, and social impacts (Plano, 2016). At the United States retail and consumer level, 90 billion pounds of food are wasted each year, which is equivalent to $161.6 billion annually (Plano, 2016). More than 50% of waste is diverted to landfills where the organic matter contaminates soil and groundwater, decomposes, and produces methane (Lopez et al., 2016). Methane, a greenhouse gas, is more potent than CO2 as it traps 25 times more radiation than CO2 (Lopez et al., 2017).
