The Impact Of Education And R&D Investment On Regional Economic Growth, Youngjin Woo, Euijune Kim, Jaewon Lim
The Impact Of Education And R&D Investment On Regional Economic Growth, Youngjin Woo, Euijune Kim, Jaewon Lim
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research
The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of education and R&D investment on regional economic growth in South Korea. We develop a simultaneous model of production, human capital accumulation, migration, population and physical capital investment of two regions: the Seoul Metropolitan Area and the rest of Korea. We decompose the regional growth path into a quality path and a quantity path to identify how regional economies grow and run simulations to evaluate alternative policies in terms of effectiveness and adaptability. The impact of education and R&D investment on regional growth in the rest of Korea is only …

David Livingstone is perhaps one of the most famous missionaries of the nineteenth century. During the mid-1800’s he captivated the imaginations of the western world with his achievements and explorations in Africa- his walk across the continent, the infamous meeting with Mr. Stanley, and his grand funeral leading to his burial in Westminster Abbey. During his lifetime he was an explorer, an anthropologist, a botanist, a geographer, a cartographer, a doctor, and most importantly in his eyes, a missionary to the unreached people of Africa.
Load Flow Management Using Distributed Energy Storage In A Residential Area, Julio Salvador Jaramillo
Load Flow Management Using Distributed Energy Storage In A Residential Area, Julio Salvador Jaramillo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Distributed generation by using solar energy through photovoltaic (PV) plants is growing considerably as well as the installation of residential rooftop solar photovoltaic panels. The integration of these panels into low voltage distibution networks creates voltage regulation problems. These voltages regulation problems occur when the load demand is significantly lower than the power generated by PV panels. Renewable energy resources are intermittent in nature and affect the grid where it is connected. Therefore a proper method to manage the generated voltage is necessary. This thesis presents a case study simulating a residential complex placed in Ecuador with rooftop-mounted solar panels …

Infiltration Of Meteoric Water In The South Tibetan Detachment (Mount Everest, Himalaya): When And Why?, A Gébelin, Mj Jessup, C Teyssier, Ma Cosca, Et Al
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The South Tibetan Detachment (STD) in the Himalayan orogen juxtaposes low-grade Tethyan Himalayan sequence sedimentary rocks over high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Himalayan crystalline core. We document infiltration of meteoric fluids into the STD footwall at ~17–15 Ma, when recrystallized hydrous minerals equilibrated with low-dD (meteoric) water. Synkinematic biotite collected over 200m of structural section in the STD mylonitic footwall (Rongbuk Valley, near Mount Everest) record high-temperature isotopic exchange with D-depleted water (dDwater = –150 ± 5‰) that infiltrated the ductile segment of the detachment most likely during mylonitic deformation, although later isotopic exchange cannot be definitively excluded. These minerals …

Sacred sites are places where the spiritual world meets the real world. Every culture in the world seeks to acclaim the mysterious, the divine, the martyred or the extraordinary. There are vast numbers of sacred places of prehistoric, historic and contemporary culture in the world. The internet has become a popular tool for gathering information about sacred sites as well as imagery and other required details related to the travel attraction of sacred sites. The internet sources possess an inevitable impact during the selection process of a sacred destination. This study aims to investigate the online background of sacred sites …
Commodification Of Islamic Religious Tourism: From Spiritual To Touristic Experience, Jahanzeeb Qurashi
Commodification Of Islamic Religious Tourism: From Spiritual To Touristic Experience, Jahanzeeb Qurashi
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the government and the local population of Mecca who used to facilitate pilgrims as ‘Guests of Allah’ free of charge have adopted the concept of ‘pay to pray’ (Shackley, 2001 & Woodward, 2004). In other words, given the escalating demand for religious tourism and the desire to achieve maximum economic benefits, the Saudi government is enhancing the hospitality, tourism and telecom sectors in general and transforming Mecca’s tourism infrastructure, in particular, developing it into a contemporary city / tourist destination by injecting US$80 billion into the local economy (Pecenoni et al., 2012). It …

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Pilgrimage Tourism, one of the oldest forms of travelling, is the largest tourism sector in India; annually more than 70% of domestic tourist movement is for religious purposes which comes to 250 million pilgrims (Jachowski, 2000, Singh, 2016) and accounts for 20% of the revenue generated in the tourism industry (Dewan et al., 2008), hence, making it significant religiously, economically, politically, as well as sociologically. The present study was based on a survey conducted among the visitors who came for the 17th Exposition of St Francis Xavier’s holy relics, a Christian religious event, from 22nd November 2014 to 4th January …

Living Like A Monk: Motivations And Experiences Of International Participants In Templestay, Byunggil Chun, Eugene Y. Roh, Samuel Arvin Spralls
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Templestay has transformed the perception and traditional role of Buddhist monasteries into a hybrid form of leisure and recreational dwelling that transcends religious boundaries. We identify four domains of motivational variables including learning, self-growth, being with nature, and relaxation. Based on data from 299 international participants in Templestay, empirical tests of the hypotheses revealed that motivational domains such as self-growth, nature, and learning exhibited significant differences based on the various socio-demographic backgrounds of international participants. Strategies are suggested for crafting Templestay as a cultural and monastic experience as well as segmenting and targeting international participants based on their needs.

Assessment Of Physical Carrying Capacity For Managing Sustainability At Religious Tourist Destinations, Ravinder Jangra, S.P. Kaushik
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Increased interest in the sustainability of tourism development has initiated concerns about the capability of tourist destinations. This concept implies a threshold or a number of assumptions that are supported by destinations and due to uncontrolled tourism activity it is essential to regulate and manage visitors as well as destinations. In the recent past, many miss-haps have occurred at famous destinations because such large numbers of visitors are unsupported by the destinations. This study aims to provide a examination of visitor thresholds. It tries to estimate the carrying capacity of Braham Sarovar, a very famous Hindu religious destination in Kurukshetra, …

A Progressive Approach To The Education Of Teachers: Some Principles From Bank Street College Of Education, Nancy Nager, Edna Shapiro
A Progressive Approach To The Education Of Teachers: Some Principles From Bank Street College Of Education, Nancy Nager, Edna Shapiro
Occasional Paper Series
In this paper we present Bank Street’s approach as represented in a set of five inter-related principles. We begin by briefly describing the origins and rationale of teacher education at Bank Street. From this description we generate principles that emerge from Bank Street’s history and practice, linking each principle to classroom images of teaching and learning. Enactment of these principles can and must vary in response to changing circumstances, needs, and mandates. In our view, this necessary variation highlights the guiding function of an explicit set of principles to govern and ensure the consonance, validity, and legitimacy of new practices.

How Can Summer Camps Influence Children Socially, Emotionally, Physically, And Cognitively?, Lindsey Becker
Honors Capstones
The following is a study of the ways in which experiences at summer camps influence children in four different categories: socially, emotionally, physically, and cognitively. There is a lack of interest and dedication to the outdoor experience one gets at an institution that operates any form of nature exploration and teaches skills needed to survive in or to understand the natural world. Though the author collects evidence from across the United States, the primary focus is near the Twin Cities of Minnesota at a camp at which the author was employed. Some of the evidence is her personal experience, some …

Erosion Characteristics And Horizontal Variability For Small Erosion Depths In The Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, California, Usa, David H. Schoellhamer, Andrew J. Manning, Paul A. Work
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Erodibility of cohesive sediment in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta (Delta) was investigated with an erosion microcosm. Erosion depths in the Delta and in the microcosm were estimated to be about one floc diameter over a range of shear stresses and times comparable to half of a typical tidal cycle. Using the conventional assumption of horizontally homogeneous bed sediment, data from 27 of 34 microcosm experiments indicate that the erosion rate coefficient increased as eroded mass increased, contrary to theory. We believe that small erosion depths, erosion rate coefficient deviation from theory, and visual observation of horizontally varying biota and …

Creating A Scaling Relationship Between Peak Discharge And Drainage Area To Identify Tile Drainage Inputs Into An Agricultural Stream, Ryan Plath
Theses and Dissertations
Tile drains have been shown to contribute to high levels of nitrate in agricultural streams. Locations of tile drains on a watershed scale, however, are often unknown due to tile drains being located on many separate parcels of private property. This study evaluates the ability of a methodology, using scaling relationships between discharge and drainage area, for locating areas of large tile drainage contribution to Money Creek, in McLean County, Illinois. Additionally, this study examines the difference in scaling relationships and physical stream hydrology between tileflow and no-tileflow conditions. Eight stream sites were created in the watershed, that recorded stage …
A Qualitative Investigation Of Secondary General Education Teachers' Perspectives On Their Involvement In Transition Services, Stephen M. Kwiatek
A Qualitative Investigation Of Secondary General Education Teachers' Perspectives On Their Involvement In Transition Services, Stephen M. Kwiatek
Theses and Dissertations
This exploratory qualitative study was designed to examine the perspectives of secondary general education teachers’ involvement within the transition for all youth, including youth with disabilities. Youth with disabilities continue to find less success than peers without disabilities during postsecondary life. Research has examined special education teachers and transition professionals’ roles within the transition process, but limited research has been conducted relating to general education teachers’ roles. Qualitative data obtained through semi-structured interviews indicate the opportunity for more substantive involvement in transition planning for all students, including those with disabilities. Overall findings suggest that general educators have desired student outcomes …

Eurasian Ice-Sheet Dynamics And Sensitivity To Subglacial Hydrology, E Gudlaugsson, A Humbert, K Andreassen, Et Al
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Ice-stream dynamics are strongly controlled by processes taking place at the ice/bed interface where subglacial water both lubricates the base and saturates any existing, underlying sediment. Large parts of the former Eurasian ice sheet were underlain by thick sequences of soft, marine sediments and many areas are imprinted with geomorphological features indicative of fast flow and wet basal conditions. Here, we study the effect of subglacial water on past Eurasian ice-sheet dynamics by incorporating a thin-film model of basal water flow into the ice-sheet model SICOPOLIS and use it to better represent flow in temperate areas. The adjunction of subglacial …

Political Realignments: How America Evolves, Alexia Pappalardo
Political Realignments: How America Evolves, Alexia Pappalardo
Academic Festival
The most prevalent theme in American politics is change. The nation’s unceasing inclination toward change shapes electoral behavior during a subsequent election, constantly evolving American foreign policy, prominent social issues, and economic advancement. The nation’s historical bipartisan system has facilitated electoral shifts that have been consequently defined as critical elections, or political realignments. These critical elections realigned the electorate from one party’s platform with inherent values, policies, and social positions, to another that felt progressively applicable for both the social and economic climate of the time. This research explores the various political alignments throughout our nation's history, and how those …
