A Hybrid Dynamic System Assessment Methodology For Multi-Modal Transportation-Electrification, Thomas J.T Van Der Wardt, Amro M. Farid
A Hybrid Dynamic System Assessment Methodology For Multi-Modal Transportation-Electrification, Thomas J.T Van Der Wardt, Amro M. Farid
Dartmouth Scholarship
In recent years, electrified transportation, be it in the form of buses, trains, or cars have become an emerging form of mobility. Electric vehicles (EVs), especially, are set to expand the amount of electric miles driven and energy consumed. Nevertheless, the question remains as to whether EVs will be technically feasible within infrastructure systems. Fundamentally, EVs interact with three interconnected systems: the (physical) transportation system, the electric power grid, and their supporting information systems. Coupling of the two physical systems essentially forms a nexus, the transportation-electricity nexus (TEN). This paper presents a hybrid dynamic system assessment methodology for multi-modal transportation-electrification. …

The World Urban Database and Access Portal Tools (WUDAPT) is a community initiative to collect worldwide data on urban form (i.e., morphology, materials) and function (i.e., use and metabolism). This is achieved through crowdsourcing, which we define here as the collection of data by a bounded crowd, composed of students. In this process, training data for the classification of urban structures into Local Climate Zones (LCZ) are obtained, which are, like most volunteered geographic information initiatives, of unknown quality. In this study, we investigated the quality of 94 crowdsourced training datasets for ten cities, generated by 119 students from six …

“… gives a new generation of Grand Forksers and Red River valley valley citizens the occasion to look backward so that they can look forward”
This twentieth anniversary of the Red River Flood of 1997, which devastated the town of Grand Forks, North Dakota and surrounding areas, gives a new generation of Grand Forksers and Red River valley citizens the occasion to look backward so that they can look forward. Taking stock of how the city and its people have changed in these last twenty years offers us a new chance to envision the future of Grand Forks and the …

It is crucial in today’s world to embrace technology, which is an essential component of our daily lives. It makes communication in our lives easier. Technology serves a variety of functions that help in the development of education, business, communication, and scientific research. The freedom it offers through social media platforms allows for personal connections at a global level to become feasible. Although the Internet provides ease of communication at a large scale, it is bound to have issues that pollute the intended connections. Virus, spam mail and cyberbullies are some of the items that contribute to it becoming a …

Self-Esteem And Reflected Appraisals Of Women’S Hair In College Women, Jenee Lee
Self-Esteem And Reflected Appraisals Of Women’S Hair In College Women, Jenee Lee
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this study was to assess the beliefs and attitudes college women hold towards their hair and other women’s hair. Previous literature has found that women are the most likely to be dissatisfied with their appearances and have lower self-esteem compared to their male counterparts. However, research has not focused on particular characteristics of appearance that may account for differences in selfesteem. The purpose of this study was to understand the beliefs and attitudes college women hold towards their hair and other women’s hair. Participants (n = 35) in the current study were asked to take a survey …

Frontier Territories And The Weight Of Violent Inequality: Land Concentration And Land Grabbing In The Colombian Frontier, 2000-2015, Diego Andrés Lugo Vivas
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation examines phenomena of land concentration, land grabbing, and intensive uses of soil in peripheral regions in Colombia designated as New Frontiers of Land Control between 2000 and 2015. Land distribution has been one of the mechanisms linked to the armed conflict in Colombia either as a cause, as a consequence or as a parallel condition. Following that, different struggles around land have evolved since 1990s when this country entered the hardest era in the escalation of the conflict. Although peripheral regions share a number of economic, social, political and to a lesser extent cultural conditions (regarding the presence …
Vulnerability Of Caribbean Island-Nations To Future Climate Change, Julia A. Dileo
Vulnerability Of Caribbean Island-Nations To Future Climate Change, Julia A. Dileo
Open Access Theses
The Caribbean is predicted to be one of the most impacted regions by climate change. However, the impacts of climate change will not be uniformly felt across the region due to the inherent geographic properties and unique socioeconomic characteristics that define each nation individually. This thesis has two goals. First, the vulnerability of thirteen island-nations in the Caribbean to future climate change is estimated by combining indicators of green infrastructure, socioeconomic infrastructure, and future climate change risks. Second, the contribution of five explanatory variables (GDP per capita, population density, land area size, political stability, and years of independence) to the …
Structural Comparisons Of Natural Versus Seawall Shoreline Mangrove Stands, Michael R. Timm
Structural Comparisons Of Natural Versus Seawall Shoreline Mangrove Stands, Michael R. Timm
Open Access Theses
Mangroves are key indicator species that manifest the interplay of abiotic and biotic inputs or energy signatures of a particular location. Technological advancements in living shoreline design have resulted in a growing interest in understanding and comparing the ecological role of mangroves along hardened shorelines to mangrove communities in natural settings. The objective of the present study was to compare fringe seawall and natural shoreline mangrove stands using structural attributes in south Florida. Structural surveys were conducted in four study sites using the fixed-plot method where all sites were assessed for the following structural attributes: tree diameter, height, species, leaf …

Estimating Age Of Rock Cairns In Southeast Alaska By Combining Evidence From Successional Metrics, Lichenometry, And Carbon Dating, Bruce Mccune,, Nijmah Ali,, Ralph J. Hartley, William J. Hunt Jr.
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
We estimated ages of rock cairns in alpine tundra in southeast Alaska by combining information from three general classes of methods, each of them imperfect, but considered together providing better estimates than any of the three alone. We used lichenometry, radiocarbon dating, and five successional metrics: score on a nonmetric multidimensional scaling axis of vegetation composition, cover-weighted average successional class of organisms, overgrowth of contact points between rocks, sum of species cover, and species richness. Lichenometry estimated absolute ages, but with considerable error because we violated key assumptions. Successional metrics provided relative ages, probably with more precision than lichenometry, but …

Erodibility Parameters Derived From Jet And Flume Erosion Tests On Root-Permeated Soils, Bailey Mcnichol, Kayla Kassa, Garey Fox, Ron Miller, Lucie Guertault
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Flume tests and in situ jet erosion tests (JETs) allow for the process-based quantification of erodibility parameters of cohesive soils. In the excess shear stress model used to predict soil detachment, the critical shear stress (τc) corresponds to the stress at which fluvial forces can detach soil particles or aggregates and the erodibility coefficient (kd) governs the rate at which detachment occurs when the imposed shear exceeds τc. The primary objective of this research was to derive and compare erodibility parameters from flume tests and JETs on various root-permeated soil samples. Based on statistical analysis, erodibility coefficients from the flume …
