We Are Not Alone: How Extraterritorial Application Of The Endangered Species Act Can Preserve International Endangered Species And Habitats, Katherine M. Macrae
We Are Not Alone: How Extraterritorial Application Of The Endangered Species Act Can Preserve International Endangered Species And Habitats, Katherine M. Macrae
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef ecosystem and is currently in danger of irreparable destruction due to natural and human-made environmental disturbance. This paper focuses on a case, Center for Biological Diversity v. Export-Import Bank, concerning the extraterritoriality application of the Endangered Species Act to a Federal agency’s funding of liquefied natural gas projects in Australia requiring, in part, the dredging of portions of the Great Barrier Reef. As the health of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and other environmentally protected and culturally important geography is jeopardized, United States’ government activity in foreign jurisdictions raises the question …

Enabling And Limiting Conditions Of Coastal Adaptation: Local Governments, Land Uses, And Legal Challenges, Jesse Reiblich, Lisa M. Wedding, Eric H. Hartge
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
Rising seas combined with battering storms necessitate swift action from local governments charged with protecting their jurisdictions and constituents. Currently, there is a wealth of scientific data and predictive modeling information available to city planners and decision-makers, but there has been limited success in proactive coastal adaptation planning and implementation “on the ground.” Furthermore, while many adaptation options for dealing with coastal changes have been identified, there remains a disconnect between many of these strategies and how they fit into an adaptation framework and long-term planning processes for specific areas, and how legally or politically feasible they are. Particularly, the …
Prospects And Pitfalls Of Desalination Development: Insights From Three States, John A. Duff, Victoria Labate, Anne M. Slugg
Prospects And Pitfalls Of Desalination Development: Insights From Three States, John A. Duff, Victoria Labate, Anne M. Slugg
Ocean and Coastal Law Journal
Like Coleridge’s sailor in the Rime of the Ancient Mariner, burgeoning coastal communities in the United States have long lamented the fact that while situated by vast expanses of ocean water, they could not slake their growing thirst with it. Increasing populations, steady demand, and declining. Freshwater sources have amplified the problem across the U.S., particularly in the country’s three most populous states: California, Texas, and Florida. This paper examines efforts in three states to bring desalination plants online to transform saline water into a secure water supply.
The American Medical Association's Designation Of Obesity As A Disease And Its Influences On Experiences Of Body Weight, Brittany M. Harder
The American Medical Association's Designation Of Obesity As A Disease And Its Influences On Experiences Of Body Weight, Brittany M. Harder
Open Access Dissertations
In this dissertation, I explored the influences of the American Medical Association’s (AMA) 2013 designation of obesity as a “disease” on experiences of body weight. I conducted 31 in-depth interviews with 29 participants considered “obese” by medical standards (BMI > 30 kg/m2) who had had conversations with a health professional about their body weight since the AMA’s policy change. Taking a symbolic interactionist approach complimented by grounded theory methodology, I addressed the following research questions: 1) What are the experiences “obese” people had when visiting a health professional post the AMA’s re-classification of obesity? 2) How did the designation of obesity …
Defense Development As Internal Balancing: The Political Determinants Of Successful Emulation, Patrick J. Thompson
Defense Development As Internal Balancing: The Political Determinants Of Successful Emulation, Patrick J. Thompson
Open Access Dissertations
What are the political determinants of successful defense development in developing countries? Leveraging insights from the international relations and comparative politics literatures, I argue that successful defense development is a function of elite perceptions of external vulnerability at strategic junctures. As elite perceptions of external vulnerability increase, I expect state power for defense development to increase, thus improving defense development outcomes. I compare the relative utility of this novel argument by comparing it to three existing theories: the defense dependency approach; neorealism; and the institutional capacity approach. Using comparative historical analysis and process tracing, I test these four theories against …
Navigating Identities: The Musical Lives Of Four Second-Generation Immigrant Children In Miami, Florida, Sandra Sanchez Adorno
Navigating Identities: The Musical Lives Of Four Second-Generation Immigrant Children In Miami, Florida, Sandra Sanchez Adorno
Open Access Dissertations
The expanding social worlds of middle childhood prompt children to evaluate and explore their sense of selves to better understand who they are and where they fit in (Erikson, 1968; Josselson & Harway, 2012). Children born in the USA to at least one foreign-born parent, also known as second-generation immigrants, often straddle multiple cultures, making their social contexts highly diverse and their explorations of identity complex (Sebastian, 2008). This collective case study focused on the home musical lives of four second-generation children in Miami, Florida, USA to gain greater insight into music’s meaning in their lives and the role it …
Speculations On A City For Mars, Edouard Terzis
Speculations On A City For Mars, Edouard Terzis
School of Architecture - Theses
This thesis proposes the reinterpretation of architectural forms as the index of the constitution of the idea of the city. “Speculations on a City on Mars” is paradoxical in a sense as it superposes both the managerial representation of a city, that is Zoning, along with the speculative aspect of an extra-terrestrial city.
A Comparison Of Brick-And-Mortar And Online Last Mile Delivery Networks, Dennis Corvi
A Comparison Of Brick-And-Mortar And Online Last Mile Delivery Networks, Dennis Corvi
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Driven by the rapid growth of e-commerce, last mile delivery has become an increasingly necessary strategy for retailers to stay competitive. The locations of distribution centers and the capacity of vehicles have profound effects on transportation costs. Demand for same-day delivery services is expected to increase in popularity as new technologies, such as drones and automated transportation, evolve and become cheaper to develop. Organizations that design their logistic network efficiently hold the largest competitive advantage. Amazon is currently an industry leader in shipping and delivery logistics by utilizing its online ordering process. Brick-and-mortar stores such as Walmart and Best Buy …

Design: This is a retrospective case-control study from November 2010 to February 2012 comparing differences between non-English non-Spanish (NENS) speaking patients to English speaking patients with differences between Spanish speaking and English speaking patients.
Main outcomes: Primary endpoints include the emergency severity index …
Veganism As A Cultural Phenomenon, Emma Sanford Frawley
Veganism As A Cultural Phenomenon, Emma Sanford Frawley
Honors Theses
The present research is a social science exploration into the adaptation and transition to veganism through the experiences of nineteen interviewees to interpret veganism as a cultural phenomenon. It questions the way in which societal, moral, and physical environments both shape and inform a sense of meaning and action behind an individual's decision to become vegan. Through six narratives, which describe the interviewee's social, geographical, educational, ethical, health-related, and environmental justifications for veganism, and an explanation of interviewee's transition to and perception of the barriers to veganism, this study uses idealist ethnography techniques to reflect the dynamism and intricacies of …

The Glocal Creation Of Space: Paru Paru’S Youth Casting Their Own Futures, Teresa M. Drenten
Architecture and Planning ETDs
This thesis illustrates the active participation of Indigenous children in the creation of space intersecting across multiple scales. I engaged with critical decolonial theories to create a community based participatory process with eleven bilingual Quechua-Spanish children in Paru Paru, Peru. My methodology focuses on the desires of the community, concentrating on their lived experiences and honoring the community’s challenges and resiliency. This research and knowledge belong to the community. Through small group and observation methods, these young participants demonstrated two desires; First, they want to remain connected to their lands and cosmology; next, they wish to receive the benefits from …

A Catch 22 Of 3d Data Sustainability: Lessons In 3d Archaeological Data Management & Accessibility, Heather Richards-Rissetto, Jennifer Von Schwerin
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
Archaeologists can now collect an inordinate amount of 3D data. But are these 3D data sustainable? Are they being managed to make them accessible? The MayaArch3D Project researched and addressed these questions by applying best practices to build four prototype tools to store, manage, visualize, and analyze multi-resolution, geo-referenced 3D models in a web-based environment. While the technical aspects of these tools have been published, this position paper addresses a catch 22 that we, as archaeologists, encounter in the field of 3D archaeology – one that formed the initial impetus for the MayaArch3D Project: that is, while the quantity of …

Fusion And Reconstruction: The Politics Of Translation And Reception In Late Twentieth Century Chinese Literature, Tong Tong
Honors Theses
The main aim of my honor thesis is to examine the influence of the translated foreign literature in People's Republic of China in the 1980s. Specifically, this thesis will trace the impact of literary translation on contemporary Chinese literature by 1) analyzing the situation of literary translation into Chinese during that period with Digital Humanities approaches and 2) conducting philological researches on translation theories and Chinese contemporary literature after 1980. Digital Humanities (DH) refer to the humanistic studies that are assisted by digital tools on aspects such as computation and visualization.
