Female Circumcision: Attitudes, Knowledge And Beliefs Within The Deaf Community, Morgane Vincent May 2017

Female Circumcision: Attitudes, Knowledge And Beliefs Within The Deaf Community, Morgane Vincent

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Female Genital Circumcision (FGC) is a cultural practice by which female genitalia are cut for non-medical purposes. Although the Western world has seen the number of circumcised youth rise, very few studies have been conducted in developed countries. Even fewer are studies on minority groups regarding female circumcision; none explicitly involve deaf people. For this study, 76 deaf or hard of hearing individuals living in the U.S., whose primary means of communication was English or American Sign Language, completed a survey about FGC before and after viewing videos. One video showed an African woman who had experienced FGC, and the …

Pavement Surface Distress Detection, Assessment, And Modeling Using Geospatial Techniques, Su Zhang May 2017

Pavement Surface Distress Detection, Assessment, And Modeling Using Geospatial Techniques, Su Zhang

Civil Engineering ETDs

Roadway pavement surface distress information is essential for effective pavement asset management, and subsequently, transportation agencies at all levels dedicate a large amount of time and money to routinely collect data on pavement surface distress conditions as the core of their asset management programs. These data are used by these agencies to make maintenance and repair decisions. Current methods for pavement surface distress evaluation are time-consuming and expensive. Geospatial technologies provide new methods for evaluating pavement surface distress condition that can supplement or substitute for currently-adopted evaluation methods. However, few previous studies have explored the utility of geospatial technologies for …

Overreach And Innovation In Equality Regulation, Olatunde C.A. Johnson May 2017

Overreach And Innovation In Equality Regulation, Olatunde C.A. Johnson

Duke Law Journal

At a time of heightened concern about agency overreach, this Article highlights a less appreciated development in agency equality regulation. Moving beyond traditional bureaucratic forms of regulation, civil rights agencies in recent years have experimented with new forms of regulation to advance inclusion. This new “inclusive regulation” can be described as more open ended, less coercive, and more reliant on rewards, collaboration, flexibility, and interactive assessment than traditional modes of civil rights regulation. This Article examines the power and limits of this new inclusive regulation and suggests a framework for increasing the efficacy of these new modes of regulation.

Mega-Development Projects In Chile And Nicaragua: Social Costs And The Future Of Indigenous And Human Rights, Emily Kawahigashi May 2017

Mega-Development Projects In Chile And Nicaragua: Social Costs And The Future Of Indigenous And Human Rights, Emily Kawahigashi

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

In this paper, I explore the impacts of mega-development projects in Chile and Nicaragua using a postcolonial framework to critically analyze the effects on the indigenous Pehuenche and Rama. Through an analysis of the Ralco Hydroelectric Dam in Chile and the proposed Interoceanic Nicaraguan Canal, I will examine the historical context and postcolonial practices that allowed for state approval of foreign-funded mega-development projects. I will then review each project’s impact on traditional, indigenous ways of life. Finally, I will propose a combined bottom-up and top-down strategy based on indigenous empowerment. My proposal is supported by the objectives of international multilateral …

Failures Of Us Foreign Aid: Jordan And Its Unique History Of Refugee Absorption, Cilia J. Jurdy May 2017

Failures Of Us Foreign Aid: Jordan And Its Unique History Of Refugee Absorption, Cilia J. Jurdy

SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal

The United States began giving aid to Jordan as a geopolitical strategy in 1951 to assists with Jordan’s absorption of Palestinian refugees after the creation of Israel in 1948. Since 1951, the United States has given nearly $15.833 billion in support. Foreign aid to Jordan began, and has been perpetuated, in order to keep the country economically stable. Jordan’s total population is 55–57% refugees. Most of these refugees require financial, health, and housing assistance, and they suffer from untreated mental health conditions. US foreign aid policy needs to have programming to treat the mental health trauma that refugees experience. Research …

Perspectives Of Two Ethnically Different Pre-Service Teacher Populations As They Learn About Folk Literature, Donita Massengill Shaw, Jackie Boyd, Diane Corcoran Nielson May 2017

Perspectives Of Two Ethnically Different Pre-Service Teacher Populations As They Learn About Folk Literature, Donita Massengill Shaw, Jackie Boyd, Diane Corcoran Nielson

Journal of Educational Research and Innovation

The purpose of this study was to investigate pre-service teachers’ knowledge of folk literature in general and that of a selected country or culture in particular before and after studying it in a college children's literature course and completing an assignment. We specifically compared two sample populations: those of primarily European American descent at a research university and those of Native American ethnicity at an Inter-tribal Native American university to see if there were similarities or differences in their knowledge about and value of folk literature. Participants from each university were selected to complete a pre-post questionnaire and a post-interview …

Corporate Social Responsibility In The Oil Industry---Comparative Case Studies Of Chinese Oil Enterprises In Five Latin American Countries, Wenyuan Wu May 2017

Corporate Social Responsibility In The Oil Industry---Comparative Case Studies Of Chinese Oil Enterprises In Five Latin American Countries, Wenyuan Wu

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation evaluates and compares social and environmental records of Chinese national oil companies (NOCs) operating in Latin America from the early 21st century to 2015. Five countries representing the entirety of Chinese NOCs’ physical presence are selected: Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela. The project discovers that Chinese NOCs demonstrate the highest level of social responsibility in Peru and the lowest in Venezuela, with the other three countries constituting intermediate observations. The differences in social responsibility records are then causally traced to variances in the host countries’ regulatory frameworks and civil society capacities. Chinese NOCs are found to be …

Our "Father Of Waters": A Story Of The Mississippi River, Then And Now, Steve Matzker May 2017

Our "Father Of Waters": A Story Of The Mississippi River, Then And Now, Steve Matzker

Research Papers

The story of the Mississippi River is rich and complex. As a visual storyteller, the goal of my final project is to provide a creative, yet informative, web-based documentary that provides an interactive component wherein users control the narrative. To achieve this, I used qualitative research in the form of interviews as well as qualitative research, including data collection and historical research to better understand the ways in which the river itself has changed, how it has informed us as individuals and as a society. This paper supplements the web-based interactive documentary:

“Our “Father of Waters”: A Story of the …

An Operational Drought Prediction Framework With Application Of Vine Copula Functions, Mahkameh Zarekarizi May 2017

An Operational Drought Prediction Framework With Application Of Vine Copula Functions, Mahkameh Zarekarizi

Student Research Symposium

Early and accurate drought predictions can benefit water resources and emergency managers by enhancing drought preparedness. Soil moisture memory is shown to contain helpful information for prediction of future values. This study uses the soil moisture memory to predict their future states via multivariate statistical modeling. We present a drought forecasting framework which issues monthly and seasonal drought forecasts. This framework estimates droughts with different lead times and updates the forecasts when more data become available. Forecasts are generated by conditioning future soil moisture values on antecedent drought status. The statistical model is initialized by soil moisture simulations retrieved from …
